FetLife is hiring a
Remote Senior Full Stack Engineer

At FetLife we're looking for a Senior Rails Engineer to help us better serve the community.

The Job

As a Rails Engineer, you'll be working with the product team focusing on building, releasing, and testing new product features. Additionally, we're always looking for ways to improve our codebase to make it more performant and easier to maintain.

Currently, our entire platform is built as a majestic Rails monolith, using Vue.js with Typescript on the front-end. Additionally, we have some critical areas that have been written in Rust.

More details about our tech stack:

  • Testing is done with RSpec & Capybara
  • Continuous integration and deployment are done with CircleCI
  • MySQL and PostgreSQL for our main databases
  • ScyllaDB for our activity feeds
  • Redis for session storage, queue management, and caching
  • ElasticSearch for full-text search
  • DevOps using Containers orchestrated with Kubernetes and Helm
  • Service and performance monitoring is done with DataDog and NewRelic

Here are some past projects we've worked on that might help you get a better idea of what it means to work as a Rails Engineer at FetLife:

  • Implemented a profile verification system from the ground up using government ID and/or pictures portraying a certain gesture
  • Added discussion pre-moderation for groups
  • Added support for installing FetLife as aย Progressive Web App
  • Improved the efficiency of our Activity Feed Deliveries by splitting longer feed event deliveries into smaller async jobs and prioritizing delivery to more recently active members
  • Introduced the possibility of tagging other members in pictures, videos, and writings
  • Added powerful filtering to our on-site reporting system using ElasticSearch
  • Improved location privacy for all our members by introducing granular location privacy settings
  • Integrate Machine Learning solutions toย detect age or potentially illegal content

About you

We're looking for someone who has proven experience building and maintaining large production-level Ruby on Rails applications in the past.

Ideally, you have experience:

  • Writing semantic JavaScript and (or) Typescript
  • Working with Redis, MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Writing unit and integration tests using RSpec and Capybara

Additionally, since we're 100% remote, we:

  • Highly value strong written communicators
  • Require at least a few hours of overlap from 8-12 AM EST (2-6 PM CET)

About Us

FetLife is the largest kinky social network on this side of the Milky Way. We:

  • Have over 10 million members and growing
  • Grew 100% by word-of-mouth
  • Serve over 1.5 billion requests a day

You can find our team and core valuesย here.

Pay & Benefits

We use a standardised salary calculator for each position to ensure we are competitive, fair, and consistent. For this specific role, the rate is between $115k - $170k USD / year. Rate is dependent on the level you are currently at.

Additionally, we offer:

  • Paid time off:
    • 2 weeks vacation
    • 5 statutory holidays (e.g. Easter & Thanksgiving)
    • 2 weeks during Christmas*
    • 4-day workweeks during the summer months (July & August)*
  • 1 retreat a year (e.g. the last one's were in Malaga, Miami, Vancouver, Tennessee, and Montreal)
  • A yearly anniversary gift of your choosing (200$ USD for every year with us, e.g. 4th anniversary is $800)
  • Reimbursed music subscription
  • Fully paid maternal or parental leave

* Not guaranteed, but have happened every year

Note: We believe the traditional hiring process is broken, so we do things a bit differently. We first bring people as a part-time or full-time contractor so that we can get to know each other. If both sides enjoy working with each other, we make you an official offer.

Silverfin is hiring a
Remote Experienced Ruby Product Engineer

We start with the cliff notes about the position. If this appeals to you, continue reading for a longer text about working at Silverfin and your role ๐Ÿ‘‡

At Silverfin, we're an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. Although we know weโ€™re not perfect yet, we are working hard on it and always open for your feedback.

According to our vision to build a diverse, equitable and inclusive organisation, our policy is to only make a final hiring decision if minority groups are sufficiently represented in the list of candidates applying for the position. For this reason itโ€™s possible interviews get slightly delayed until weโ€™ve reached that goal.

We're committed to elevating talent by creating an environment where we can all thrive together. So if you think you have what it takes, but don't necessarily check every single box, please consider applying. We'd love to hear how you might contribute to our mission and our team.

What can we offer you?

  • Actual, proper work-life balance

  • A salary range of โ‚ฌ93.000 - โ‚ฌ123.000 a year

  • Employee Stock Option Plan

  • Choose your own working hours and work 100% remotely

  • Personal growth training and opportunities

  • Join a distributed remote-first engineering team with 35 colleagues in 14 different countries

  • A refreshing work environment with professional, friendly and welcoming colleagues

  • A โ‚ฌ1000 yearly budget for conferences, courses, workshops or other expenses that will improve your skills

  • This year we offer monthly fix company-wide Wellbeing Days for all employees (10 paid days off in 2023)

What will you work on?

  • Figure out the best way to solve a customer or business problem in close collaboration with a product manager, a product designer and other engineersย

  • Work on user facing functionalitiesย

  • Help with discovery and delivery of a solutionย

  • Give the engineering perspective on potential ways of approaching a specific challengeย

  • Help with maintenance and support of existing functionality

What are we looking for?

  • Youโ€™re experienced in both Ruby and Rails, and also understand where the boundaries lie between them. You can code in Ruby without any of Railsโ€™ training wheels if necessary.

  • You have some experience using Javascript framework(s), understand the value of them, but also know when plain Javascript is enough.

  • You're interested in getting to know our customers to find the best solution for a given challenge.ย

  • Youโ€™re up for mentoring coworkers and can give in-depth, productive feedback during code reviews. While you appreciate the small stuff, you recognise bike-shedding and can avoid its pitfalls.

  • You code with reason and can justify the important decisions you made during development.

  • You can communicate clearly in English, both in writing and verbally.

  • You know and can apply best practices when relevant. That means the usual like version control, testing, and refactoring; but also higher level concepts such as good object oriented design.

  • You're aware of the trade-offs involved in proper engineering and can make balanced business decisions, keeping in mind all the stakeholders of the project.

  • Youโ€™ve got opinions on code design and you can discuss them, but youโ€™re professional enough to not let those opinions get in the way of a consensus if necessary.

If youโ€™re any good at Ruby, this is probably not the first job ad youโ€™ve seen, so weโ€™ve done our best to stand out while also accurately presenting what weโ€™re all about. If it sounds like you would enjoy working with us, donโ€™t hesitate to apply or drop us a line with questions on [email protected]

Ahum. Here it comes.

Whatโ€™s a Silverfin?

At Silverfin weโ€™re trying to apply the promise of software to the age-old industry of accounting. With our SaaS weโ€™re automating a large chunk of the busy-work that accountants are currently handling manually, and are building new tools so they can provide better services to their customers. We aim to optimise their workflow in such a way that accountants can spend more time on the much more impactful and rewarding work of advising their customers, the business owners.

The good news is weโ€™re succeeding in doing exactly that. Every week more than 15.000 financial service professionals use Silverfin to help and advise more than 400.000 businesses. Our customers adore us! The even better news is thereโ€™s still plenty left to work on, and thatโ€™s where we hope you come in.

Whatโ€™s the product team like?

The product team is a cross-functional team where engineers work together closely with product managers and product designers. The team's input is a user or business problem which it can solve with a high degree of autonomy. From day one all profiles are involved in understanding the problem, ideating solutions and doing quick experiments to prove that a certain solution might actually lead to the desired outcome. After the discovery phase the same team is tasked with the delivery of the chosen solution. The team will then track the adoption of the solution and will make sure that the problem is actually solved. The setup of the team is largely based on the book "Inspired" by Marty Cagan.ย

What does working at Silverfin look like?

The product team will work together with the other Silverfin engineering teams. While the product team is set up as a stream-aligned team, most other teams are set up as platform teams around modules and topics of the Silverfin application. They are helping the stream-aligned team to develop solutions fast and without a lot of mental overhead. The platform teams' focus is the stability and long term architecture of the product as well as building frameworks and libraries that can be used by the stream aligned team. If those terms are not familiar to you, check out the "Team Topologies" book by Manuel Pais and Matthew Skelton which inspired this structure.ย

Our ops team ensures things run smoothly, deploys happen correctly, and will work with you when issues should arise. Weโ€™re enthusiastic followers of the devops mindset, which means ops and developers work together to solve problems, and empower each-other to be self-sufficient, instead of throwing problems over the wall to the โ€œother sideโ€.

We run an up-to-date Rails monolith on the backend, with PostgreSQL and Redis for persistence and caching, and everything is running on a Kubernetes cluster in Google Cloud. Our daily tools include GitLab, Quip and Slack, with Zoom as our remote conferencing tool of choice.ย

No code gets deployed without a code-review by a peer and testing is a must. Our pipeline automates deployment when the suite is green, and deploys happen dozens of times a day. Each team is currently doing Kanban, but theyโ€™re free to follow whatever process suits them best. There are regular retros held to work towards continuous improvement.

Software for accountants is not considered to be very exciting, but we have our fair share of technical challenges. To give you a sense of scale: our database exceeds 10TB*, and our largest table has crossed the 10 billion row mark a long while back. We interface with more than 30 different external APIs, and provide third parties an API of our own.

*: Our ops team noted that this actually isnโ€™t that hard to achieve if youโ€™re just indexing everything, but it still sounds impressive, right?

What makes the engineering team at Silverfin special?

Weโ€™re a remote-first engineering team of 35 people distributed in 14 different countries over two continents. A priority for us is maintaining proper work-life balance. We avoid meetings as much as possible, accept deadlines only when absolutely necessary, and never expect anyone to work longer hours than theyโ€™ve signed up for. A day in our working lives is pretty boring, and we feel thatโ€™s exactly how it should be.

Working with us means you can be flexible with your schedule. Itโ€™s OK to disappear for a few hours in the middle of the day to run some errands, get a haircut, pick up the kids - whatever reason, you donโ€™t need to explain yourself. You also fully decide when you take time off: our team is sufficiently varied and well organised that there are always enough people around to handle the load, and in the rare cases itโ€™s not, we will decrease the load instead of asking people to move their holiday.

Being remote-first means we favour asynchronous communication. We donโ€™t shy away from chatting in Slack, but the important decisions or discussions are done in Gitlab issues, over email, or in Quip, so thereโ€™s a written, persisted record. Weโ€™re mindful of maintaining long chunks of focussed time, which means we avoid @-mentions or PMs on Slack, and other triggers and interrupts. We encourage using Slackโ€™s DnD function, especially when youโ€™re not working!

Weโ€™d be really happy to welcome you in our #engineering channel, but itโ€™s not just virtual: we make sure we regularly get to see each other in real life too. Twice a year we fly the whole engineering team together to a different location in Europe, and at least once a year we join up with the rest of the company so we can spend some time together with the other departments.

What does your future look like?

Personal growth is key to staying motivated. At Silverfin you donโ€™t need to move to management in order to advance. We see the individual contributor track and the management track as two different growth paths which every engineer can follow and switch between. You can be promoted, including pay raises, as a contributor just like as a manager.

Everyone has a โ‚ฌ1000 yearly budget to spend on conferences, courses, workshops or other training to improve their skills and level up. This also includes accommodation, travel costs. If the conference is on a workday youโ€™ll get paid like any normal day.

Requirements

  • You have at least 4 years of experience working with Ruby, or 2 years of experience with Ruby and 4 years in one or more other programming languages

  • You get Rails

  • Your work hours have some overlap with EU business hours (we require your local timezone to be within CET +/- 3h)

  • You can communicate clearly in English, both written and verbally

Nice to haves

These would be nice but are definitely not necessary. Donโ€™t worry if none of the following applies to you.

  • Experience as a remote worker in a fully remote team

  • Experience working with large datasets and the problems they bring

  • You have some experience using Javascript framework(s), understand the value of them, but also know when plain Javascript is enough

  • Experience in Fintech

  • Accounting knowledge

Skyward is hiring a
Remote Mid level Senior Software Engineer

Software Engineer (Mid to Senior)

At Skyward we strive to build the company we always wanted to work at: higher quality relationships, fewer clients, work-life balance, and working on diverse, meaningful projects.

We are a small, fully remote, international team building apps and web platforms. We work closely with our clients in long term contracts - operating as their entire product and development teams.

Weโ€™ve been successful as a core team and are now seeking a mid-to-senior full stack developer to become the next member of Skyward. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and passionate about helping mission-based companies achieve their goals through technology.

Our Tech Stack
- Ruby on Rails
- Javascript/ES6
- Flutter (iOS + Android)
- Postgres
- CSS

Requirements
- Strong understanding of web development concepts
- Enjoy working all over the tech stack
- Familiarity with mobile development (Flutter is a big plus)
- Take pride in the quality and usability of code you ship
- Excellent communication skills
- North American or European timezones

Benefits
- Work anywhere! (fully remote, international team)
- 100% Medical, Dental and Vision insurance
- Unlimited PTO
- Competitive Pay

At Skyward, we work on diverse projects and across all layers of the tech stack. Our clients include mindfulness platforms, apps for developing West Africa, and biotech solutions, to name a few. Working on 2 or 3 of these projects in a week is common.

The ideal candidate is adaptable and thrives in a fast paced, changing environment. During product development the scope of work often changes, as we guide our clients to finding product-market fit. While you wonโ€™t consistently interface with clients, we must all be customer and quality advocates when we are creating their products.

Skyward operates with minimal overhead and a โ€œflat-ishโ€ structure. Thus, the ideal candidate must be self motivated with a strong sense of personal responsibility. Each person is trusted to be individually accountable to their work and commitments. This gives us great freedom, but requires that we are diligent about completing our work and releasing well tested code.

We have a culture that encourages and desires everyone to bring their unique voice to the table. Our company, and subsequently, our clients, benefit from your unique perspective. If this intrigues and excites you, weโ€™d love to hear from you!

We prioritize building teams that represent the diversity of the people our government serves. We love the challenge of government-size projects. We want to bring skills to federal agencies, help them better meet the needs of their users, and close the gap between consumer expectations and government. \n\nBuilt for a remote life\nAd Hoc is remote-first and remote-always.
