ChangeLab is hiring a
Remote Contract Software Developer

### Key details\n**Pay**: £400-600 per day\n\n**Working pattern**: The contract can be made for 3 or 4 days per week, depending on your preference\n\n**Start date**: Flexible, either now or in January, depending on your availability\n\n**Duration**: Six to twelve months freelance contract\n\n**Location**: Remote in GMT +/- 3 (Offices in London and Berlin)\n\n### About us\nChangeLab is a worker-owned, democratically-run co-op building ambitious tech for NGOs, progressive political parties and campaigning organisations worldwide. We work with organisations like the British Labour Party, Unite the Union, 38 Degrees and Change.org to help them win progressive change. A few of the things we’ve done so far: \n- Helped elect the first ever BAME leader of any political party in the UK, Anas Sarwar, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party with our collaborative calling software\n- Helped the National Education Union survey safety precautions in schools during the Coronavirus pandemic, allowing the union to force the government to protect teachers and landing our tool on the frontpage of the BBC, Evening Standard, and more \n- Helped enable tens of virtual conferences during the Coronavirus pandemic for trade unions and NGOs with over 1,300 participants debating and voting simultaneously\n\nWe’re now moving from bespoke software development to building out impactful SaaS products that help progressive campaigns win. Our main fields of work now are:\n- Ringround, enabling volunteers to collaboratively call and text voters and supporters, already used by Keir Starmer’s campaign to become Labour leader, Freedom from Torture & more. \n- Democracy, a live video conferencing & voting platform, used by many UK trade unions to enable their annual conferences capable of supporting up to 3,000 delegates in real-time video communication, as well as offering voting and breakout sessions\n- Pinpoint, a tool enabling hundreds of personalised Facebook ad creatives to be targeted to different regions and/or custom segments, to increase conversions and impact\n- ShareHarder. A tool to improve organic social growth, allowing users to optimise the images and text that are displayed on Facebook when a user shares their website.\n\n**Learn more on our [website](https://changelab.io) (https://changelab.io) and [GitHub](https://github.com/changelab-hq) (https://github.com/changelab-hq).**\n\n### Who we’re looking for\nWe’re looking for a freelance senior developer with Ruby on Rails and React experience who is available for six to twelve months. We’re looking for someone who we can build a long-term working relationship with, who can build a deep familiarity with our products and codebases. \n\nYou will be working across all of our core products at different stages. Our primary development scheduled for the immediate future is focused on the Ringround product, but there is ongoing development happening on each of the products. We are a small team, and are looking for someone flexible, who enjoys getting to grips with a variety of codebases and taking steps to actively improve them.\n\nSince we’re a worker-owned co-op, if we all enjoy working together, there is a path after a year to becoming a full partner in the business with an equal ownership stake as the rest of us, along with the responsibility and benefits that provides. \n\nHowever, it’s not mandatory - if you’d rather keep freelancing, then that won’t affect your application or how we work together at all. \n\n### You’ll enjoy this role if:\n- You want to use your technical skills to make real progressive change\n- You enjoy working in a small team and seeing the impact of your work day-by-day\n- You enjoy solving technical problems \n- You like to prototype and experiment with new technology\n- You’re quick on your feet and experienced applying a range of approaches to debugging issues that arise\n- You’re pragmatic about when applying “best practices” will pay off versus when it’s just box ticking\n- You’re motivated by seeing your code running in production and having a positive political impact\n\n### Our technology stack\nWe work primarily in Ruby on Rails for back-end and React for front-end. Most of our applications have a heavy real-time component or are complete SPAs, so we use a lot of websocket communication backed by Pusher, Anycable and Redis. We have been actively working on a library, called Jason, which allows us to subscribe the frontend to updates from any Rails model as soon as it is edited, with almost no boilerplate code required.\n\nWe also enjoy working with telephony and video technologies - Ringround integrates heavily with many aspects of Twilio’s infrastructure and Democracy uses the video API platform Vonage.\n\nGenerally we keep deployment as simple as possible, relying on Heroku and AWS services such as RDS and S3, so DevOps requirements are fairly light. \n\n### Essential skills and experience\n- 3+ years professional full-stack web development experience\n- Ruby on Rails\n- React, using the new Hooks API\n- Rspec\n\n### Nice to have skills and experience\n*Note: We don’t expect any applicant to have all of these - so don’t be put off applying if you don’t!*\n- Redux (or similar state management libraries)\n- Previous experience building real-time apps using WebSockets\n- Browser testing using Cypress, Selenium or similar\n- Javascript testing using Jest\n- Working knowledge of key AWS services\n- SQL for analytics\n- App monitoring and performance analysis using NewRelic\n- Machine learning experience with tabular data using libraries like XgBoost or LightGBM\n- Twilio\n- Vonage\n \n\nBe sure to mention the word **RECTIFICATION** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $100,000 — $150,000/year\n \n\n#Location\nEurope (+/- 3 Hours Gmt)

CitizenLab is hiring a
Remote Tech Lead Govtech

Do you want to join us on our mission to shape democracies for the digital age? Are you looking for an international and fast-paced, yet collaborative and inclusive environment to thrive in?\n\nYou have come to the right place.\n\nCitizenLab, a global social impact scale-up with its HQ in Brussels, and presence in New York, works to make public decision-making more participatory, inclusive, and responsive. The SaaS platform is already being used by 300+ local governments and organizations in over 18 countries, facilitating two-way communication between governments and their residents. Since it was founded in 2015, CitizenLab has given 750,000+ community members a direct voice in local politics, has earned recognition as the 'Best Social Impact Startup in Europe', and was featured in outlets such as The New York Times and Forbes.\n\nCitizenLab is looking for purpose-driven talent to join us on our mission to enable millions of people in cities across the globe to shape the future of their communities.\n\n**Tech Lead at CitizenLab**\n\nAs a Tech Lead at CitizenLab, your goal is to help your product development squad align on priorities, task decomposition, and planning. As the Tech Lead, you are not only contributing code yourself, but you are also coaching and enabling your squad colleagues to contribute more effectively.\n\nThe small, cross-functional squads consist of a product manager, designer, and 4-5 engineers. We are opening the Tech Lead position on the Engagement and Insights squads. Engagement’s main goal is to build innovative methods for input collection and deliver a seamless participation experience for citizens. Engagement is the squad working on our core product and has a strong focus on our social impact. Once the input is collected, Insights will make the data actionable for policy-makers and help them better inform their public decisions. Insights builds product features to optimally support input processing through natural language processing, and visualise the data insights in a compelling and user-friendly way.\n\nYour responsibilities will include:\n\n* Taking responsibility for the week-to-week planning of the squad, in close collaboration with your engineering colleagues and product manager.\n\n* Guiding the squad through technical specifications and decomposition of tasks.\n\n* Giving feedback to the designer and product manager on feasibility and effort.\n\n* Follow up on feature progress and report to the product manager and CTO.\n\n* Identifying blockers and issues early on, and working together with the squad to prevent them.\n\n* Implementing continuous process improvements to boost developer experience and productivity.\n\n* Acting as a sounding board to developers and helping resolve technical challenges.\n\n* Aligning with the CTO and lead architect on the technical direction of the product.\n\n* Contributing code yourself, when all of the above has been taken care of.\n\nAt CitizenLab, we work in small teams where members collectively take ownership of the outcome of the features they build. We work in very small iterations and release continuously. We’re strong believers in user testing and understanding live product usage.\n\n**What do we expect from you?**\n\n* You have several years of experience in a technical leadership position, preferably in a tech scale-up environment.\n\n* You have a collaborative, empathetic, and participatory leadership style. We are looking for a facilitator and mentor, more than a manager.\n\n* You know Ruby well and have contributed full-stack to user-facing web applications.\n\n* You have some experience with React and Typescript.\n\n* (Only relevant for Insights:) You have dealt with end-to-end complexities of web applications that apply machine learning or big data before as a developer, from the AI models, through the back-end APIs, to the UI. You understand the fundamentals of machine learning and have toyed around with Python.\n\n* You are a great communicator and listener. You enjoy making people around you grow.\n\n* You have a keen interest in contributing to our digital democracy mission through our product and working on the topic of citizen participation.\n\n* Relocating to Brussels is not a must, but would be a big plus. Working in more or less the same time zone (CET) is a must.\n\nEagerness to learn, talent, and enthusiasm are more important than ticking the boxes. Even if not all desired requirements are met, but you're very excited about the role, we want to hear from you.\n\n**What can you expect from us?**\n\n* Unlock your full potential and create social impact at scale. Day-to-day, we work with local government leaders across the world to help them connect with their communities.\n* Become a key factor in our rapid transition from a startup to a scaleup (50 employees), and our international expansion.\n* Work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive environment. We share a participatory culture of autonomy and ownership by everyone, not only by leadership.\n* Be part of our dynamic, international team. We are as serious about our work in digital democracy as we are about having fun on our journey together.\n* Enjoy an informal work vibe with open communication and full transparency on results.\n* Participate in our various hybrid (in-person/remote) team events, inspiring team lunches, our company book club, bi-quarterly strategic town halls, and yearly global team retreats.\n* Spend 10% of your time on personal projects and self-development for the long run. We’re committed to both collective and individual growth.\n* Receive a competitive salary package, incl. perks such as 26 paid holidays, a professional development budget, a collective bonus plan, your own laptop, full flexibility on working from home, and much more.\n\n*CitizenLab is committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applicants of different backgrounds, genders, experiences, abilities, and perspectives to apply.* \n\nBe sure to mention the word **CUSHY** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $80,000 — $100,000/year\n \n\n#Location\nCET Timezone

8returns is hiring a
Remote Senior Software Engineer

*tl;dr: Early-stage startup hiring remote Rails/React/etc developers (EU-timezones — around GMT+1). We're seeking to build the OS for circular commerce.*\n\nAt 8returns, we're transforming one of the most frustrating, environmentally damaging and costly aspects of e-commerce — returns. We built a technology that automates the returns process for retailers and makes data-driven decisions to connect each return to its best use.\n\nWe're still in the scrappy startup phase, so we are looking for people who are comfortable with ambiguity and having wide impact. We've been remote-first since Day 1, and care a ton about communication, autonomy, curiosity, and initiative.\n\nWe have happy paying customers and just raised our first round of funding from industry leaders. Our team is highly experienced, and has started and sold companies before. We also love learning from each other, and are looking for people who bring a new set of experiences and backgrounds to our team.\n\n**Why you might be excited about us**\n\n- We're working to solve a massive global problem - 10 billion pounds of returns end up in landfills every year and for retailers it’s a trillion-dollar problem.\n- We're small, so you'll be able to contribute efficiently and without bureaucracy. You'll quickly have responsibility over big areas of our product. You'll also help build our company's culture.\n- We don't have a ton of meetings. If we can effectively solve a problem asynchronously, we do. When we do meet synchronously, you'll always have the opportunity to contribute.\n- You'll be able to work remotely and set your own schedule. We don't micro-manage and will help you do great work. Most of our engineers work EU hours, but organize their work day to be whatever's best for them.\n- We will mould your role to shape a career you're excited about. We care a ton about your satisfaction and job happiness, and will help prep you for whatever you're looking for in the future.\n- We work hard and also highly value balanced work/life. We care about family and your own personal development, and don't expect for you to be always engaged with work.\n\n**Why you might *not* be excited about us**\n\n- We're small (~10 people in the company now), so if you like more established companies, it's not (yet) the right time. Since we're an early stage startup, projects and priorities may shift.\n- Our customers love us, *and* there's a lot we can improve. It's a great place to be, but means there's some technical debt.\n- We can't (yet) provide close mentorship for junior developers, especially as we're remote and small. As we grow, we'll get a lot better at this.\n- Since you'll have a lot of responsibility and creativity over projects, they may not be defined perfectly initially. You'll be expected to bring your own experience and perspective to help us do the right things, and raise flags if you think we should do things differently.\n\n**Who you are**\n\n- You worked remotely before, or know that you'd work well with a remote team.\n- Ability to think creatively and critically and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often ambiguous work environment\n- 3+ years of experience developing high performance web applications\n - If you want to focus on frontend, experience with React is a big plus\n - If you want to focus on backend, strong knowledge of Ruby on Rails and experience designing maintainable systems, APIs, and integrations are great\n- You are able to decide what aspects of products need to be perfected and when to cut corners to ship faster\n\nThe main app is built with Ruby on Rails and React. We use Postgres, Heroku, AWS. While previous experience with these technologies is a plus, we’re looking for someone with broad experience.\n\nIf we think you might be a good fit, we'll respond within 48 hours. \n\nBe sure to mention the word **TENDER** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $70,000 — $100,000/year\n \n\n#Location\nEu

Whitespectre is hiring a
Remote Senior Ruby on Rails Developer

[Whitespectre](https://www.whitespectre.com) is a product-centric,Rails-led technology consultancy for both vc funded start-ups and large, established companies across the US and Europe. We’re also a product incubator with our own applications and b2b SaaS platform. As long-term partners to our clients, we’ve played a critical role in their growth- both through the products we co-create and the expertise and processes we bring. Proudly remote first since 2013, we’re a close-knit team of 75, working in fast-moving, cross-functional agile pods to solve interesting technical challenges and drive real business impact.\n\n**What's it like to be a Senior Rails engineer at Whitespectre?**\n\nOur senior rails developers are sharp technical experts with the ability to think like product owners- being able to advocate for code quality as a long term strategic investment while knowing when to adapt a more start-up mentality to deliver rapid business value. They drive architecture and implementation decisions, mentor other engineers, and stay up to date with the latest rails techniques and trends as part of the collective Whitespectre rails brain trust.\n\nWhitespectre operates on a fully-modern tech stack- toolset includes Rails6/7, Postgres, Elastic, REST/GraphQL, ReactJS, Typescript, Webpack, CI/CD with Docker, Heroku/AWS, etc. Working smartly is important to us; automation, dynamic environments spin up with new feature branches and slack bot integrations control our production releases.\n\nThe majority of our projects involve building greenfield applications and our delivery teams typically own products end to end - your thinking and contribution make a big impact!\n\n**What else is great about working at Whitespectre?**\n\n* Interesting challenges: We’ve done everything from scaling high-performance, high concurrency backends, building beautiful (but complex) user interfaces to handling real-time event streams from hardware devices..\n* Grow everyday: Be in an environment that embraces constant learning and exploring - whether it’s a new skill, a new way of thinking, or a new product experiment, we know it’s the key to staying motivated.\n* Career progression: Get the opportunities, knowledge sharing, and mentorship to grow- whether you want to move into management or Principle Engineer. We proudly promote from within.\n* Work-life balance: Thrive at work, but know that it doesn’t take over your life. Clear processes and realistic planning avoids fires!\n* Paid Meetups: We love remote, but face to face is pretty great too. Come meet with your colleagues in Barcelona or at a local meetup.\n* Competitive rates, long-term outlook: We offer competitive rates and a long-term, full-time contract position. Many of our team members have been with us for 5+ years.\n* Want to know more? Check out [Glassdoor](https://www.glassdoor.com.ar/Reviews/Whitespectre-Reviews-E1575846.htm?countryRedirect=true)\n\n**This is the right position for you if want-**\n\n* The challenge of collaborating with business stakeholders and Product Managers to advocate for technology solutions while bearing in mind the tradeoffs for business results\n* The responsibility of designing new architectures and being confident to justify your technology decisions. (Plus debating and recognizing when a colleague has an even better idea!)\n* To solve problems that can’t be addressed by just searching Stack Overflow\n* The opportunity to go outside your core Rails expertise and strengthen skills with other technologies (e.g. Elixr, React.js or Node.js)\n* An environment where excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) are valued and honed\n* A culture where people from different backgrounds interact, collaborate and reach a shared goal\n\n**The “check the box” Requirements**\n\n* 5+ years of experience in software development, 3+ years of Rails\n* Experience contributing to technical decision making within a team\n* Can work full-time with significant crossover with the core hours: 11am - 6pm Central European Time\n* Live outside of the US. Please, no recruitment agencies.\n \n\nBe sure to mention the words **CHEESE STADIUM GADGET** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Sketch is hiring a
Remote Backend Developer Documents

Sketch is a design platform with an award-winning native Mac app and browser-based collaboration tools. Over a million people use our product to create their best work. And right now, we’re looking for a Backend Developer to join us.\n\nWe work with empowered product teams that truly own what they do — delivering new features and improving the technology foundations of our platform. As a backend developer at Sketch, your job will be mainly focused on designing, implementing, and maintaining APIs on large-scale systems that impact people's day-to-day work. You will work closely with frontend, Mac developers, and product managers to guarantee a product-focused, smooth engineering process.\n\nThis position is for the Documents team. This team takes care of organizing the Sketch documents in the user's workspace. Related areas include sharing of documents between team members and people external to the team, versioning of the documents, and the documents' permissions model. Most of the tasks that fall into the responsibilities of this team require close collaboration between the developers, the Product Manager, and the designers of the team. Since the documents are a central topic for Sketch, the team needs to collaborate periodically with other teams in the company such as Cloud Core, Presentation, and Onboarding. Our backend developers need to understand how the product works in detail, as well as feel comfortable tackling complex technical tasks that include performance optimizations, data integrity problems, code readability and maintainability issues, and so on.\n\nAt Sketch most of our backend is built on Elixir with Phoenix, served over GraphQL and persisted on PostgreSQL. We build some supporting web services increasingly in Go (although this team barely has contact with our Go services). Sketch's backend services also utilize some additional AWS services such as SQS, Redis, etc..\n\nAbout you\n\nWe are especially interested in finding developers with experience either building web APIs with Elixir or strong experience with other functional programming languages (e.g. NodeJS, Clojure, F#). You might not have experience with all the technologies in our stack, but you are motivated to learn deeply. You will get the opportunity to work with experienced teammates who can teach and pair with you to learn whatever you have less experience with.\n\nYou care about security, code quality, scalability, performance, and simplicity. Above all, you seek operational excellence and apply the best engineering practices possible. Not everything that you or your team do can be perfect, but you make sure that you always know the trade-offs. You back your decisions with arguments. You don't care for hype and always try to find the best solution and technology for the job and its context.\n\nYou are a pragmatist and understand technology as the medium to build products. You understand the right balance between code readability, simplicity, development speed, performance, and maintainability.\n\nYou value team work, knowledge sharing, autonomy and ownership. You care are about your team, and contribute to an environment of psychological safety and healthy work culture.\n\nAbout Sketch\n\nWe’re a company of diverse thinkers and doers who take pride in always improving our product. We share a vision and commitment to help each other — and our customers — create great work.\n\nWe’ve been fully remote since day one. It’s meant we can bring together incredible people from around the world. You’ll join over 65 Mac, backend, frontend, QA and infrastructure engineers in the Technology team, based everywhere from Scotland to South Africa, and Lithuania to the US.\n\nWe encourage our people to be themselves and embrace what makes us unique. We value different backgrounds, perspectives and experience, and we strongly believe this is key to achieving outstanding results.\n\nWe work asynchronously as much as we can. Our team communicates mostly in writing, using Slack and GitHub. When we need it, we also have video calls. We have a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing, and we provide the environment and the tools you need to do your best work.\n\n\n\nEven if you're not able to tick all of these boxes, we would still love to hear from you. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on previous jobs related to Ruby, Senior and Engineer jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n
