bit.io is hiring a
Remote Software Engineer Backend

bit.io is building the fastest way to get a database, query data, and share data — publicly or privately. Despite the assertion that “data has become the new oil,” the tooling around databases has not meaningfully changed in twenty years. Even with the push for big data and machine learning, a frustrated, growing cadre of data scientists and engineers have to spend too much time setting up and maintaining a basic set up just to use data. bit.io allows users to become immediately productive with data, reducing time from data upload to query to 1 minute. And, our users love it, saying “Your product is amazing”, “really love your product, maybe the best on the market”, and “I am sold on bit.io”.\nbit.io’s long term vision is to become the place for all the world’s data, private and public, just like github is the place for source code. We’re building a team of passionate dataphiles to make that vision a reality and make data - especially public data - more accessible to everyone. We’ve got a ton of thorny database, infrastructure, UI, and UX problems to solve along the way. Come build it with us.\nCritical toward achieving bit.io’s vision is a datastore that (1) scales to petabyte queries while still enabling fast query-iteration by users, and (2) applies data best practices while remaining flexible when opinionated defaults aren’t enough. You will build bit.io’s datastore.\n##As a Software Engineer at bit.io you will:\n* Work across the stack on all aspects of software engineering for the core product\n* Collaborate directly with all teammates on a small, productive technology team\n* Solve petabyte-scale problems in the data space\n* Design, build, test and deploy a complex data management system\n* Make broad, impactful technology decisions with responsibility for their outcomes\n##We’re looking for someone who has:\n* Shipped product\n* Experience and passion in data, data engineering, and data processing\n* Deep knowledge in data management - parsing, cleaning, querying, extracting, etc.\n* A strong drive to make software easy-to-use\n##The ideal backend engineering candidate will have:\n* Expertise in Python and SQL\n* Constructed APIs with technology like REST, OpenAPI, or gRPC\n* Developed with microservices and container technologies like Docker & Kubernetes\n* High proficiency in building data processing pipelines, working with structured data, and leveraging common database technologies\nbit.io is an early-stage, well-funded startup that’s fully remote. We’re outcome-oriented, scientific, curious, respectful, resilient, and inclusive. In addition to competitive salary, equity, bonus, and benefits (including top-tier insurance, generous new-parent leave, and unlimited PTO), we do two unique things: (1) in order to be inclusive and to counter systemic hiring inequities, salary and equity is transparent and not negotiated — every employee with the same role and level is paid exactly the same; and, (2) we have 4-day x 8-hour work weeks (i.e., no Fridays) — we value work-life balance and think you’re just as productive. If you’d like to learn more about what we’re building, how we work, and how your career would develop with us, please reach out to [email protected]\n###Additional Information Links:\n[How Our Early-Stage Startup is Offering Fair Equal and Transpaprent Compensation](https://blog.bit.io/how-our-early-stage-startup-is-offering-fair-equal-and-transparent-compensation-ae582a1ad8e4)\n\n[We Have A 4-Day Work Week and You Should Too](https://blog.bit.io/we-have-a-four-day-work-week-and-you-should-too-795363c6202a) \n\nBe sure to mention the word **ADULATION** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $110,000 — $170,000/year\n \n\n#Location\nThe Americas

CitizenLab is hiring a
Remote Full Stack Engineer Govtech

Do you want to join us on our mission to shape democracies for the digital age? Are you looking for an international and fast-paced, yet collaborative and inclusive environment to thrive in?\n\nYou have come to the right place.\n\nCitizenLab, a global social impact scale-up with its HQ in Brussels, and presence in New York, works to make public decision-making more participatory, inclusive, and responsive. The SaaS platform is already being used by 300+ local governments and organizations in over 18 countries, facilitating two-way communication between governments and their residents. Since it was founded in 2015, CitizenLab has given 750,000+ community members a direct voice in local politics, has earned recognition as the 'Best Social Impact Startup in Europe', and was featured in outlets such as The New York Times and Forbes.\n\nCitizenLab is looking for purpose-driven talent to join us on our mission to enable millions of people in cities across the globe to shape the future of their communities.\n\n**Full-Stack Engineer at CitizenLab**\n\nAs a Full-Stack Engineer in the Engagement squad, you contribute to our core product, which allows local governments to engage their community members through a wide range of digital participation methods. You’re part of a cross-functional squad. While you can contribute to both our Ruby back-end and our React front-end, you specialize in one. You help your colleagues to bridge knowledge gaps.\n\nAt CitizenLab, we work in small teams where members collectively take ownership of the outcome of the features they build. We work in short iterations, test rigorously and release continuously. We’re strong believers in user testing and understanding live product usage.\n\nYour responsibilities:\n\n* You actively contribute to the specifications of new features, uncovering technical constraints and breaking down the work in iterations and tasks.\n\n* You take ownership over your tasks and implement them in close contact with your colleagues.\n\n* You take into account all aspects, from data models to testing, to performance, delivering well-engineered scalable solutions.\n\n* You bridge the back-end/front-end knowledge gaps for your colleagues, seeing the full picture.\n\n* You deliver your work in small iterations, often soliciting feedback from colleagues, spontaneously and through code reviews.\n\n\n**What do we expect from you?**\n\nAs our Full-Stack Engineer with a front or back-end focus:\n\n* You have multiple years of experience developing in Ruby on Rails or React and have at least played around with the other, or very similar. Experience with Elixir is a plus.\n\n* You know how to implement a modern user interface.\n\n* You know how to implement a sound API.\n\n* You’re a firm believer in well-tested and peer-reviewed code.\n\n* You take initiative and like to be challenged.\n\n* The ability to relocate to Brussels is a plus, but not a requirement.\n\nEagerness to learn, talent, and enthusiasm are more important than ticking the boxes. Even if not all desired requirements are met, but you're very excited about the role, we want to hear from you.\n\n**What can you expect from us?**\n* Unlock your full potential and create social impact at scale. Day-to-day, we work with local government leaders across the world to help them connect with their communities.\n* Become a key factor in our rapid transition from a startup to a scaleup (50 employees), and our international expansion.\n* Work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and supportive environment. We share a participatory culture of autonomy and ownership by everyone, not only by leadership.\n* Be part of our dynamic, international team. We are as serious about our work in digital democracy as we are about having fun on our journey together.\n* Enjoy an informal work vibe with open communication and full transparency on results.\n* Participate in our various hybrid (in-person/remote) team events, inspiring team lunches, our company book club, bi-quarterly strategic town halls, and yearly global team retreats.\n* Spend 10% of your time on personal projects and self-development for the long run. We’re committed to both collective and individual growth.\n* Receive a competitive salary package, incl. perks such as 26 paid holidays, a professional development budget, a collective bonus plan, your own laptop, full flexibility on working from home, and much more.\n\n*CitizenLab is committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applicants of different backgrounds, genders, experiences, abilities, and perspectives to apply.* \n\nBe sure to mention the word **INTERESTING** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This job post is closed and the position is probably filled. Please do not apply.
Type:\n\nRemote, permanent, full-time position\n\nKey Skills:\n\nTypescript, Javascript, AWS (Lambda, RDS, S3, Security Measures and Scaling), Deployment & CI/CD Automation, Appstore (iOS & Google Play) experience.\n\nPitch:\n\nDo you have a soft spot for profitable companies with a meaningful, globally used and loved product? Would you like to work within a compact, super-capable team in a refreshing work environment? Would you like to work on an application that is changing the way we learn and communicate? Drops could be the place for you.\n\nAbout us:\n\nOur goal at Drops is to ensure effective language learning through a delightful, seamless, gamified experience. We strive to be the #1 app for vocabulary learning. Our app has been live on the App Store for 4 years, covering 43 languages, serving over 30 million users across the globe and has been featured on both the App Store (App of the Day) and Play Store (App of the Year in 2018). Drops has also been featured by TechCrunch, FastCo, Forbes, CNN, Bloomberg, VentureBeat and many, many more. In short, we’re a tiny but very powerful team spread (mostly) across Europe, achieving great things the remote way! In December 2020, Drops was acquired by Kahoot!, the world’s leading game-based learning platform\n\nCheck us out here: https://languagedrops.com\n\nAbout you:\n\nYou’ve been working within product companies for a while now and have extensive backend and infrastructure engineering experience. Perhaps you were a key team member that nursed a startup to technical success or you hit the ground running in an already successful growth company. There are bonus points up for grabs for backend/technical lead or principal engineer experience!\n\nYou’re a no-nonsense individual with senior level experience, comfortable in implementing projects across the backend. Be it feature work or infrastructure tech debt, you’ve got a solid understanding of type safe development, comfortable working with databases, writing serverless business logic and operating in an AWS infrastructure. You enjoy the challenge of solving internal technology hurdles while growing a product with millions of MAU. Scaling is one thing, but taking ownership and delivery of security and standards is another important part of the role.\n\nDrops is a deliberately small, but super effective team. You’re naturally drawn to the fate of the products & driven to grow as an engineer rather than to manage people\n\nThe role:\n\nYou are excited by variety (it’s the spice of life!) - In this role, you’ll be:\n\nDeveloping backend features for an app deployable to both web and app stores\nBuilding internal infrastructure/tooling within AWS and GCP\nEnhancing platform security\nKeeping our build times down in automation, deploying and testing\nEnsuring our availability is in the 5 9’s category\nYou’ll be a core part of the engineering team, working on both our main products (Drops, Droplets, Scripts & Visual Dictionary) and internal development challenges with split work between backend feature development and infrastructure challenges.\n\nYou will:\n\nSupport the product team through feature development and bug fixing\nScaling and enhancing security across infrastructure/ops work\nWork with the CTO on the backend technical roadmap, vision and take responsibility for delivering the improvements\nCommunicate effectively with product managers, QA engineers, frontend developers and the marketing team\nAssist in levelling up our engineers through individual talent development pipelines, demos and learning sessions\nBe part of our on-call rota across the engineering team (1 in 5)\n\n\nWhat’d be different here:\n\n\nWe’re a small team. We’re optimising for impact, not for headcount. You’ll be carefully considering any tradeoff that would lead to increased complexity\nWe have robust coding standards and every pull request needs review and approval before it lands in master. We use the rebase workflow and we release a few times a week\nWe’re currently using a single programming language - TypeScript. There are however better placed technology for different jobs which we’d love explore\nOur backend is AWS, deployed multi-region to Lambda and using RDS for our DB. We use Buildkite and Bitrise for our CI\nWe’re using react native on the frontend\nWe’re using Cognito and Firebase for authentication\nWe are BIG on AB testing. We focus on releasing high impact projects and minimise noise\nWe’re doing things in a functional way, concentrating state, minimising side effects and making dependencies explicit. We’re sharing 98%+ of the code between Android, iOS and Web\nOur biggest challenge is (and will remain) managing the complexity of sharing a lot of code between different apps\nRequirements\n\nYou have:\n\nExtensive experience in software/product development within senior roles\nExperience building apps in a functional environment (serverless)\nExperience architecting and developing complex web or mobile apps\nExperience in scaling internal tooling, promoting development best practices and prioritisation (and ensuring delivery) of technical debt\nProject management experience (everyone manages projects at Drops)\nStrong verbal and written communication skills\nExperience working in a product growth environment\nDrops values clear, honest communication and transparency. It’s the linchpin of our culture, success and freedom. You’ll be involved in both high and low level decision making and available during European working hours (10AM - 6PM CET).\n\nBenefits\n\n🌍 All the perks of remote working\n👥 An awesomely compact 24 person team\n🧠 Yearly educational allowance\n💪 Fitness allowance\n💻 High-end Apple hardware and ergonomic accessories\n🏖 36 days of holiday per year\n✈️ Quarterly team gathering somewhere in the world (Amsterdam, Iceland, Lisbon and Budapest were previous locations) - Once we can move freely of course \n\nBe sure to mention the word **NICELY** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Sendify is hiring a
Remote Help Build the Future of Logistics Senior Backend Engineer

Sendify is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to help work on our product. This role will help build and maintain Sendify's core, enabling small businesses to focus on what makes them special, and not on logistics.\n\nSendify is a platform built to replace the traditional logistics department. It helps standardise booking, pricing, and tracking. It uses a mix of smart technology, clean UI, and a dedicated team to help small businesses to simplify the shipping process. Our vision is to be a full-service logistics platform for small business.\n\nSendify's head office is currently in Gothenburg, Sweden. We are, however, open to all candidates through Sweden and Germany. \n \n\n**The job**\n\nYou'll help lend a hand with architecting and building out new features, maintaining existing ones, and being a strong voice for technical debt. You'll keep tabs on and bring forward parts of the developer experience that don't work well. Part of this role is to step away from the code and to give voice to the architecture, guide other engineers, and help shape our roadmap and incoming features with a technical eye.\n \n\nOur role within Sendify is to produce technology to make our customers' lives easier. To do this, and do this well, we need someone who has a great filter for fluff. We work done that is neat, tidy, well-named, and thoughtfully-abstracted. This is what you'll help us with. Someone who leaves our world a little better than when we found it 🌎\n\n\nOur stack is Golang. We run on K8S, and lean heavily on AWS for hosting and services to help keep us online. It is not a hard requirement to be familiar with Go; if you have experience in another language, these skills will translate easily. We're happy to help you learn.\n\n\nSome of our actual recent work (and things that are on the menu to be worked on):\n\n* Moved our high-complexity ImageMagick implementation out of our application and into AWS Lambda. Simplifying our dependencies, and isolating a CPU-bound workload.\n* Diagnosed and debugged an issue with our ERP system where a customer was entering badly formatted data in the wrong field and not returning a correctly formatted error message for our Dashboard.\n* Investigated and agreed as a team to take on technical debt through a DynamoDB integration. This allowed us to ship a feature we're not certain about, and now remains easy to change or remove if needed. Tidy-ups have been scheduled for later in the year to pay the debt down.\n* Dug deep into our pricing algorithm, documenting the pieces, and working with Max on the product team to help understand what is needed.\n* Started generating realtime manifests - aka pickup receipts - for carriers. These are more convenient for our customers, and generated in memory - reducing dependence on file storage.\n* Simplified our CI/CD pipeline, diagnosed and removed an extra build step. Shifted from Debian to Alpine, removing old dependencies and removing legacy build scripts along the way.\n* Migrated our internal load balancers from EC2-classic load balancers to AWS Application Load Balancers. Using K8S to handle the resources and routing.\n \n\n**You**\n\nWe looking for someone who's got experience writing modern backend web services. Someone with a nose for code-smells, has a good sense for architecture, and values simple solutions. You've probably got 5+ years of experience building technology professionally.\n\nWe want someone who is not afraid to ask questions and has the wisdom to speak up when there's bad decisions being made. This is someone who can listen carefully, and understands the essence of what is being asked - presenting a technical solution that fits both the problem, and the world. We push to have an open and low-ego environment, where ideas can be suggested freely and where your team takes your thoughts seriously and works to hone them to their best form.\n\nSendify wants team players - if you're a "lone wolf" with your work, this is not the role for you. You're someone who takes care to explain tough concepts to people from all backgrounds. You should be comfortable giving and receiving feedback on ideas. You understand that we work as a group, and not a collection on individuals.\n\nYou, as an engineer, should be happy to get your hands dirty. You should also be comfortable approaching problems from both quantitive and gut-feel approaches. Being comfortable with digging deeper, but also with pushing for a decision when the conversation has come far enough. You are expected to be a self-starter; someone who works towards the goal - taking into account what is said explicitly, but what is also implied.\n\nWe do not require a degree or any formal qualifications for this role, and the position is 100% remote. If you live in or around our current offices, you are welcome to join — but this is not a requirement. We are a remote-first team, and will remain this way.\n\n \n\n**Benefits**\n\nJoin us at the perfect time. If you want to work on a startup in it's most ideal form, now is the time. Sendify knows what it is, and it has the resources to get there — our job now is to get out there and build it. We're a company with huge ambitions, and this is not just talk.\n\nWork with a high integrity and supportive team. Teach, be taught, and learn as you go. You, as an engineer, will be close to the road. This means we feel our wins, and learn from our failures. We have broad experience: expect to learn about different technologies, be part of an upcoming hack-week, dip your toes into new languages or new codebases.\n\nWe also work alongside non-engineers: social events, team sports, karaoke (..or not karaoke), and slow summer lunches in the sun ☀️\n\nHave a short decision path. Tech you want to work with? Techniques you've seen? A better way we can do things? This is a good place to test both your eye for what's new, but also for getting it through implementation.\n\nHelp develop the team. As we grow, we face new challenges - how should we work together best? How should we architect our systems for scale? What's the most important thing to work on right now? How should we adapt our team shape or technology to be quicker?\n\nWe're fair and transparent with salary. This is based on seniority and is standardised within the team. It's important to all roles, and you should not need to fight or negotiate for the same salary as your peers.\n\n \n\nBe sure to mention the words **NATION TWENTY INSANE** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $60,000 — $90,000/year\n \n\n#Location\n🇪🇺 EU

You understand the right balance between code readability, simplicity, development speed, performance, and maintainability.\n\nYou're well-acquainted with typed NodeJS codebases and preferably these technologies: GraphQL, Apollo, Postgres, Redis, ElasticSearch, Docker, AWS, websockets, microservices, event-driven architecture.\n\n# About TheyDo\nTheyDo is the first B2B SaaS platform that allows organizations to redefine cross-team collaboration around the customer journey. It is journey management, the product management way. We help teams make sense of a complex data graph and connect it with various data sources. Our users are design-savvy and we strive to make a highly polished and performant experience for them.\n\nWe're a passionate team from 🇳🇱🇵🇱🇺🇦🇸🇪. Founded in 2019, TheyDo has raised $2M+ from top investors to start a movement. We are about to double our team and get our product ready for scale while we are onboarding customers across all continents.\n\nWe're on a mission to help organisations scale Journey Management. Today, everyone is in the Experience business; here, we help our customers to make better and faster customer-centric decisions across the entire customer experience. Thanks to TheyDo, everyone agrees, including the customer.\n\nRead more on our [website](https://www.theydo.io).\n\n# Your assignment\nYour top priority is shaping the architecture of our product and getting it ready for scale. You'll work on the technically ambitious projects we have planned. Some examples currently on our roadmap:\n\n* 🔌 Realizing integrations with a wide ecosystem - Miro, Jira, Google Analytics, etc.\n* 📈 Implementing microservices and extend our event-driven architecture.\n* ⏱️ Enabling version control on all user data.\n* ⚡ Improving real-time collaborative functionality. Using fractional indexing, last-writer wins and other techniques to provide a superior user experience.\n\nAs a founding team member, you will get a chance to set the foundations of our engineering culture. You will help articulate our engineering principles and help set the long-term roadmap.\n\n# We're looking for\n* An ambitious engineer with several years of experience working on back-end architecture and design. Previous experience at a scaled product is a big plus.\n* An engineer who wants to be at the foundation of a fast-growing team.\n* A product-minded engineer that wants to understand how people use our product and why.\n* An asynchronous worker who organises and documents their work.\n* A clean coder who writes well-structured and maintainable code.\n\n# What we offer\n* Remote position, for 4-5 days per week, across flexible working hours.\n* Collaborate with zealous colleagues having 20+ years of experience working in the field.\n* A unique opportunity to shape a product and our growing team.\n* Regular off-sites/company outings with the TheyDo team.\n* Competitive compensation and equity package.\n* As many vacation days as you need, we expect you to take at least 25.\n* Professional development reimbursement.\n* Mental health and wellness reimbursement.\n* Paid parental leave.\n* Home office & technology reimbursement.\n\nTo summarise, we value work-life harmony backed by personal freedom under responsibility. Sounds like fun? We're looking forward to having you join our team. ✨🙏\n\n# Our engineering team\nThe engineering team consist of: a CTO, three full-stack engineers, one back-end engineer, and one QA tester. We aim for a relaxed environment within the ambitious goals we have for our product.\n\nOur server is fully typed and built using NodeJS, Apollo, Redis, Postgres, ElasticSearch and more modern technologies. Our web application is also typed and uses VueJS, Apollo, WebSockets, and more. Other tooling currently includes AWS, Storybook, Cypress, Jest, Stripe, and WorkOS.\n\nA typical day at the office for an engineer includes; flexibility to organise your own time, no set hours, ample time for deep work, as few mandatory meetings as possible, plenty of pair programming with team members to get your code just right, reviewing pull requests, and running around in our virtual office.\n\nView our team members [here](https://www.theydo.io/about-us).\n\n# Our culture\nTheyDo's culture is 'Do' rather than 'Talk'. Better ask for forgiveness instead of permission, no one will be accused of trying. We try to keep things simple because complexity slows us down.\n\nIt's not about the time spent, but the outcome achieved. It's up to everyone to map, plan and interact in the best way to get the most out of their day, week, and sprint. Always with an open mindset because we never know when and where the next great idea will surface.\n\nBeing remote we nourish and cherish connectivity, so no one feels alone or left out. We don't have long lines of communication or decisions because hierarchies and silos are part of the past and we love to shape the future. In our virtual office, you can just walk up to your team to have a quick chat, get work done or simply say hello. We motivate everyone to find their own work/life balance. Whether you choose to work asynchronously or synchronously it's up to you as long it fits you and your team.\n\nTheyDo is an equal employer treating everyone as equals. We value diversity and individuality. We think long term and strive to hire the best match for each role, no matter your background. \n\nBe sure to mention the words **SHIELD TOPIC SLIDE** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $80,000 — $130,000/year\n \n\n#Location\n🇪🇺 EU

Steadily is a Series A insurtech startup for landlords.  We've grown from 5 to 30 people over the last year to match demand, and the technical/product challenges have gotten really interesting. We're hiring a senior engineer with experience building web apps and service oriented architecture to help us build the core of our stack.  \n\nAt Steadily, our purpose is to give landlords fast, affordable insurance and amazing customer service so they’re confident they’ll have the coverage they need on a rainy day. Because of our technology and service, our customers love being insured by us, even when they have a claim. \n\n**Why join us**\n\n* You'll be in good company. Not to toot our own horn too much, but the founders are solid engineers. Our VP of Engineering helped grow a company from 15 people to more than 2,000 software engineers. The President has gone through YC twice and has two previous exits.\n* We pay top of market with competitive base salaries and equity\n* You’ll be hands-on with everything, from coding in python to influencing product roadmaps\n* We're growing fast and are well-funded (Series A, $30M)\n\n**What you'll build**\n\n* Rating engines for calculating how much an insurance policy should cost\n* Combine property intelligence for external sources to estimate how likely a property is to flood, catch on fire, or get vandalized\n* A mobile experience for people to buy insurance that is so simple/intuitive that your least-tech savvy relative with a flip-phone could use it without help e.g. pass the Mom Test\n* Claim app that uses phone camera and sensors to document the damage smartly\n\n**Ideal background**\n\n* Experienced: This isn't your first rodeo. There's no specific minimum number of years requirement, but we expect you to be able to dive into a complex codebase without too much spin-up. Past experience as a team lead is definitely a plus.\n* Builder: You like the product-side of engineering and have thoughtful opinions on what the user experience should be. You're not the type of engineer who wants a fully-fleshed out spec thrown over the wall for you to code.\n* Pragmatic: Let's say you have a tradeoff to make: Option A is to ship something fast using an off-the-shelf API on AWS; you won't learn that much and it only solves 80% of the problem, but it'll only take a few days. Option B is to invest about two weeks building a new library and internally-hosted service that perfectly solves the problem; as a bonus you can share it on Github and give a presentation about it at PyCon. If you choose Option A 10/10 then you'll be at home here.\n* Specific languages: We don't really care if you've worked in our stack before as long as you're happy to learn it. If you're sharp enough to be on this team, you're sharp enough to learn any language or framework quickly.\n\n**Our stack**\n\n* Python 3\n* Django\n* Postgres\n* Heroku (with full CI pipeline)\n* Redis / Celery\n* Kafka\n\n**Compensation**\n\n* At least $150,000/year\n* We believe in paying top-of-market to attract the best person for each role.\n* However, the compensation package is usually the second reason people choose to join a startup. The primary reason is they want to experience the growth that comes from pouring your heart and soul into building something that people love. That’s what we do.\n\n**Things to consider**\n\nThis won't be easy. We work extremely hard to sustain our execution velocity and have sky-high expectations of each other. This fact is itself a huge reward: getting to work with other individuals as stellar as you.\n\n**Benefits**\n\n* Paid Time Off\n* Health Insurance\n* 401k / HSA / FSA\n\n**We’re excited to meet you!** \n\nBe sure to mention the words **CLARIFY MUTUAL SKATE** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $150,000 — $250,000/year\n \n\n#Location\n🌏 Worldwide

+ You’d be working on custom WordPress sites. Ideally, you would be comfortable with front-end pieces as well as complex back-end ones.\n\n+ You’d be communicating with the team regularly. We use Slack for regular communication and Basecamp for project management. There are occasionally some video chats we’ll need to do, typically via Zoom.\n\nJOB BENEFITS:\n\n+ You can work from anywhere. No moving for a job involved. If you’re happy where you are, stay there. If you’re unhappy, move somewhere new. This job will go with you. (If you want to spend a month working from the Italian countryside or in a Scottish pub, more power to you.)\n\n+ Depending upon the type of work, you’ll either get paid a flat rate on a per-project basis or hourly for any clients we have ongoing support with (particularly those for which the scope is ever-evolving).\n\nSKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:\nYou should have a solid understanding of WordPress, CSS, PHP, Twig, React, and Javascript. You should have experience coding WordPress themes, from scratch.\n\nOther skills:\n+ You know how to work with Woocommerce.\n+ You’re very comfortable working with Advanced Custom Fields.\n+ You’ve built custom Gutenberg blocks.\n+ You have experience with Twig, even if not in a WordPress setting.\n+ You are comfortable working with third party APIs like Mailchimp or Google’s APIs.\n+ You understand how to work with modern web hosts like WPEngine and complex web hosts like Rackspace, are skilled in working with databases directly, and are confident migrating websites to new hosts.\n\nThis job IS for you if:\n+ You’re available during most standard EST hours, as we do have a key client who needs support during that time.\n+ You believe the best code is clean, simple, and well-organized.\n+ You are detailed oriented and meticulous. You get letter spacing, fonts, and column widths right. And you’ll even make sure the site ends up with custom favicon.\n+ You get projects done on time (or early).\n+ You are honest and have no tolerance for drama.\n+ You are comfortable using Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch to gather information from designs for development.\n+ You can commit to the position for at least twelve months.\n+ Our ideal candidate is a developer who has an exacting aesthetic eye and the ability to make things so intuitive that the non savvy user can feel comfortable editing.\n\nThis job IS NOT for you if:\n+ You are repeatedly late getting work done.\n+ You dislike or have problems with regular communication or daily virtual standups.\n+ You prefer to start out with a pre-made theme with page builders for website development.\n+ You often miss details.\n+ You think that a 28px margin is the same thing as a 25px margin. Or that Helvetica is the same thing as Open Sans.\n\nMost projects last between 4 and 8 weeks, depending upon the size of the project and the client feedback process.\n \n\nBe sure to mention the words **BRONZE BALCONY YOUNG** when applying to show you read the job post completely. [Whimsical](https://whimsical.com) is the thinking and collaboration tool for distributed work. Our software helps thousands of customers—from individuals to Fortune 500—to work together more effectively. \n\n\n\nWhimsical is expressive, fast, and delightful. We believe that software should spark joy, not dread.\n\n\n\nWe’re now looking for **Senior Clojure Back-end Developers** to help move that vision forward! \n\n\n\n## Day-to-day work\n\n\n\nAt Whimsical you can expect your day-to-day to include:\n\n\n\n- Scoping, understanding, and implementing features: Your primary task would be to work with other teammates to figure out the best [way to take a Shape Up pitch from idea to deployment within the cycle](https://basecamp.com/shapeup/3.1-chapter-09).\n\n\n\n* Support our customers: We have awesome customers, and supporting them often includes getting some help from the person that implemented the particular feature a customer is having issues with. \n\n* Support the team: Review pull requests, refactor code, help with both technical and non-technical issues and in general help each of us end the day better than when we woke up.\n\n* Taking on-call duties in your time zone: We try to take advantage of the fact that we're a small, geographically distributed team by delegating the first-responder duties to the people who are awake at that particular moment.\n\n\n\nOur back-end stack is Clojure, Postgres, Redis, ECS, and is AWS based.\n\n\n\nOur front-end stack is Cljs, Reframe, Reagent, among others.\n\n\n\n## Indicators that this could be a good role for you\n\n\n\n- You feel that our philosophy resonates with you and you can see it guiding your decisions while at Whimsical.\n\n- You have 5+ years of back-end development experience.\n\n- You have experience [building and maintaining complex systems.](https://whimsical.com/blog/how-we-built-whimsical)\n\n- You feel comfortable using Clojure and functional programming in general to solve non-trivial problems (Bonus: you've used Clojure in a production environment before).\n\n- You have previous experience running systems in the cloud (Bonus: specific experience with AWS)\n\n- You have previous experience with running production workloads in containers (Bonus: specific experience with AWS ECS)\n\n- You have experience in measuring, analyzing, and fixing performance problems in a distributed systems.\n\n- You're able to work autonomously and stay self-motivated. (Bonus: previous experience working on remote team).\n\n- You are fluent in English.\n\n\n\n## Requirements\n\n\n\n- Due to legal and compliance reasons we’re looking for someone in either\n\n @ 🇺🇸🇨🇦North America\n\n @🇪🇺European Union\n\n @🇬🇧United Kingdom\n\n- A resume or manually entered experience (you can choose your preference).\n\n- Thoughtful, thorough responses to all the application questions.\n\n\n\n## What We Offer\n\n\n\n- 100% Remote: We’re spread from California to Latvia and we’ve got you covered if you prefer to work from a coworking space\n\n- Salary: Annual salary starting at **$134,277** (depending on experience)\n\n- Equity: starting at **0.13%** (depending on experience)\n\n- Vacation: 4 weeks of paid time off each year\n\n- Parental Leave: 4 weeks paid by company\n\n- Equipment: We provide all the tech you need to work successfully\n\n- Summits: We try to bring everyone together at least twice a year\n\n- Pension*: 401k with 6% company matching\n\n- Health Insurance*: Paid by company for you and dependents\n\n\n\n_* Availability may depend on your location and our current administrative capabilities there._\n\n\n\n## How we work\n\n\n\nWe use an adapted version of [Basecamp's Shape Up](https://basecamp.com/shapeup) approach, which for us means:\n\n\n\n- We work in cycles of 6 weeks of focused work and 2 weeks of cool down.\n\n- Each 6 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped, each having very specific and well defined requirements.\n\n- During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.\n\n- Each of us can create an "idea pitch" for an upcoming cycle, and move our ideas along.\n\n\n\nAs a back-end developer at Whimsical, you'll be contributing to all things server and infrastructure based, be it backend code, database optimizations, managing infrastructure, or ensuring that our servers are alive and healthy. And being a small company means that sometimes contributing to Front-end and other areas of the product shouldn't be a deal-breaker to you.\n\n\n\nIn addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally roll up our sleeves and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.\n\n\n\nOur primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.\n\n\n\nBut we also believe in spending quality time together, which is why we try to bring everyone from around the world together at least twice a year for what we call "Whimsical Summits". At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart. The ongoing global pandemic has prevented us from doing this for the last couple of months, but we hope to go back to this mode of operation as soon as possible\n\n\n\n## About Whimsical\n\n\n\nWhimsical was founded in 2017 by Kaspars Dancis and Steve Schoeffel to help people think and collaborate in the digital-first work environment.\n\n\n\nWhimsical's product is expressive, fast, and delightful. We believe that software should spark joy, not dread.\n\n\n\nWe are a remote-first company and big proponents of remote work because it democratizes the opportunities for people everywhere.\n\n\n\nOur operating philosophy is based on set of core principles, such as:\n\n* Sustainability: We don't believe in growth at all costs. Growth is a fundamental part of a healthy existence but we want it to be in balance with sustainability and bounded by ethical behavior. We strive to work calm, 40-hour work weeks.  Whimsical is also committed to doing our part towards [sustainable future for the planet](https://whimsical.com/blog/on-the-path-to-sustainability).\n\n* Craftsmanship: We care deeply about our work. We are specialists, eager learners, and persistent in our pursuit of quality work. We're patient and committed because building great things takes time.\n\n* Long-term focus: We're building Whimsical for the long-haul, not a quick exit. We avoid shortcuts and consider every key decision from a 10+ year perspective.\n\n* Partnership Mindset: We’ve built the company around the idea that everybody who joins us should feel like they are partners in the business. Time is precious and we want Whimsical to be the place where people invest their time rather than sell it. Our equity offers are 100% transparent and above market average. We also pay everyone at the same level the same salary, no matter where they live.\n\n \n\nBe sure to mention the words **APPLE RABBIT FEW** when applying to show you read the job post completely. **OVERVIEW**\n\nWe're looking for Full-Stack Software Engineers to join our Engineering team. In this role, you will build innovative payments products that delight both engineering and finance teams. As an early member of the engineering team, you will help shape the engineering culture of a fast-growing startup.\n\nThe core platform at Modern Treasury sits between our customers and their banks. In the same way that Twilio abstracted away the complexity of working with communication networks, we have built an easy-to-use, common interface into the banking system. Our customers use our products to do things like move money to or from their users, automate back-office work, and record their transaction ledgers. The companies that can use Modern Treasury move over $750 trillion a year via bank payments, as compared to only $2 trillion per year on card payments.\n\nOur API is often the most critical piece of infrastructure that our customers use. We place a premium on building robust, scalable systems that can sustain a high volume of API calls and exceed the reliability requirements to move money at scale. We complement this with well-thought out interfaces for our users and pride in writing quality API docs.\n\nWe believe in using the best tool for the job, rather than always using open source or building things ourselves. We actively embrace open source in parts of our system but aren't afraid to roll our own solution for things like writing and parsing bank files. We also contribute to open source (for example, https://www.moderntreasury.com/journal/continuous-accounting-building-on-an-open-source-library).\n\nIn addition to our API, we have had a web platform since day 1 that is used by accountants, controllers, and engineers. They use our platform to do things like manage payment workflows and monitor their business. As an engineer, you will work with our product team to build products and features for these users.\n\n**ABOUT MODERN TREASURY**\n\nModern Treasury is payment operations software for businesses with a high volume of transactions or complex payment flows. Modern Treasury automates the full cycle of money movement — from payment initiation, through approvals, to reconciliation.\n\nOur mission is to transform the way businesses move and track money, driving toward a world where payments are real-time, reconciliation is instant, and accounting is continuous.\n\n**WEEK BY WEEK**\n\nDuring your first week you will:\n* Get to know our leadership, culture, and values\n* Onboard with the engineering team\n* Ship your first commit on day 1\n* Take on 1-2 small tickets to address bugs or make minor improvements\n* Read our favorite industry primers\n\nDuring your first six weeks you will:\n* Ship your first major project\n* Write your first blog post. We love writing at Modern Treasury (and have been on the front page of Hacker News multiple times with posts like "What Happens When You ACH a Dead Person?" and "How to Build an Insurance Company")\n* Shadow a few customer and partner meetings every week\n\nDuring your first six months you will:\n* Work with our product team to scope and ship products for both our engineering and finance users\n* Help grow our team by mentoring new engineers, writing internal tooling and documentation, and interviewing new hires\n\n**WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE**\n\n* Experience building web applications professionally for 2+ years\n* Experience working with SQL/Relational databases\n\n**TECHNOLOGIES WE USE**\n* Ruby on Rails for our backend framework\n* React, GraphQL, and Tailwind CSS on the front end\n* Postgres for our database, Redis for caching\n* AWS for infrastructure and hosting\n* Docker for containerization, \n* GitHub for source code management\n* Buildkite for continuous integration\n\n**EOE**\nModern Treasury is committed to equal employment opportunity and does not discriminate in any employment opportunities or practices based on an individual's race, color, creed, gender (including gender identity and gender expression), religion (all aspects of religious beliefs, observance or practice, including religious dress or grooming practices), marital status, registered domestic partner status, age, national origin or ancestry (including language use restrictions and possession of a driver’s license issued under California Vehicle Code section 12801.9), natural hair, physical or mental disability, political affiliation, medical condition (including cancer or a record or history of cancer, and genetic characteristics), sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or related medical condition), genetic information, sexual orientation, military and veteran status or any other consideration made unlawful by federal, state, or local laws. It also prohibits unlawful discrimination based on the perception that anyone has any of those characteristics, or is associated with a person who has or is perceived as having any of those characteristics. \n\nBe sure to mention the words **COPPER SNAKE VIEW** when applying to show you read the job post completely.
