Big projects in front of us right now:

Build out the Hepper.com e-commerce experience: revamping checkout pages, category pages, product listings, and making sure that data analytics on Hepper is properly configured. 3. Clearing the big backlog of tasks that has piled up over the last couple of months. We are behind, and we have lots to do, so itโs important that you hit the ground running!
4. In this role, you would over the next 3-4 months hire 1-2 developers in your department. So, itโs crucial that youโre excited about managing, inspiring, and doing code reviews with other developers too.
You will be responsible for
Making the webdev department kickass: catching up with the backlog of tasks, and being an amazing communicator.
After 3-4 hiring months: hiring 1-2 web developers who will work under you. Itโs therefore important you are excited about hiring, managing, and doing code reviews with developers. We can help teach you the skills to hire and manage developers, though, you must be excited about this for this to work.
Developing new tools and software that help millions of pet lovers every month (could for example be to develop a Puppy Weight Chart Tool / Calculator that helps pet owners predict how fast, and how big their dog will grow)
Developing, testing, and maintaining new features and solutions for our WordPress sites for desktop and mobile browsers that are optimized for high traffic.
Create, review, and update technical documentation such as contributing to our development processes, QA procedures, and technical planning
Communicating and supporting our content and marketing departments with dev/IT requests, troubleshooting, fixing bugs
Performing scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance and security updates on our WordPress sites
Always proactively being on top of things and securing and protecting our WordPress sites from hackers and malware, as well as eliminating risks
Be informed of relevant new technology and best practices
You are expected to have:
Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and PHP
Experience with MySQL and managing databases
Experience with WordPress development (e.g. themes, hooks, filters, plugin API, etc)
Experience with build tools like Webpack or ViteJS
Experience with Composer and a basic understanding of autoloading, dependency management, and dependency injection
Experience with SSH and comfortable with basic terminal usage
Experience with Git (and GitHub)
Troubleshooting abilities (ie include finding CSS and JavaScript conflicts using browser developer tools, navigating codebases in theme and plugins, and determining whether a plugin or theme code could be causing a code conflict)
The ability to take a project on your own and get it done before the deadline
Strong communication skills. This is a MUST as we work remotely. (most of our communication is written in Slack with occasional calls)

Some things to know about our workflow
Every Monday, we have a one-on-one Zoom meeting to discuss our goals, whether you are meeting your goals, what went well, what did not go well, and so on.
You would work directly with the CEO, Simon, who trusts you with your responsibility areas and empowers you to come up with and for you to find the solutions. In other words: this role has a lot of freedom for you to work in the way that you think is best for the company. Simon and the team do not micromanage and have no interest in doing so.
Youโre also responsible for maintaining the Github repository of the project youโre working on, committing/pushing/documenting your changes, commenting on your code, and writing SOPs or technical documentation (if necessary). It doesnโt have to be pages long and can be very short and concise. But, as a developer, it makes life so much easier if you can return to your code in the future without having to think too hard about what you did. This is also about being considerate of your teammates' time.
There must be some overlap in our working hours so you can respond to urgent requests (if any) or chat with your manager or any of our departments on demand if they have an IT question. This means that some extra tasks may arise during the week.
You might have a day where one of our team members needs something urgent and needs it done the same or the next day, which can be valuable to the company, or a major issue needs to be fixed ASAP, in which case you might have to drop what you're working on and work on that. If your main project's deadline cannot be met because of this (which is understandable), you should be able to communicate this on time.

With our SaaS weโre automating a large chunk of the busy-work that accountants are currently handling manually, and are building new tools so they can provide better services to their customers. We aim to optimise their workflow in such a way that accountants can spend more time on the much more impactful and rewarding work of advising their customers, the business owners.
The good news is weโre succeeding in doing exactly that. Every day more than 15.000 financial service professionals use Silverfin to help and advise more than 200.000 businesses. Our customers adore us! The even better news is thereโs still plenty left to work on, and thatโs where we hope you come in.
Whatโs Team Syncs?
One of the core features of Silverfin is integration with the bookkeeping software that accountants already work with, in order to import their accounting data. This means we have integrations with over 30 different vendors, and we want to add more as we expand to different markets.
Team Syncs is one of the teams responsible for creating and maintaining these kind of integrations. The ideal candidate loves working with APIs, including the uncertainty they bring. Some APIs we need to use are poorly designed, badly documented or unreliable, and it can be challenging to build a robust integration. Yet the satisfaction of empowering our customers to import gigabytes of data from their clunky bookkeeping software and to use Silverfin's advanced features makes it all worth it.
Being a tinkerer and having persistence to solve puzzles will definitely be a plus to face our many challenges due to the plethora of different systems we interact with.
Now letโs give you something to chew on!
Our short-term roadmap will focus on:
Refactoring and improving our own framework (written in Ruby) which is installed on windows machines and consumes our REST API. This process involves accessing raw data on customerโs machines and sometimes doing reverse engineering to collect and transmit the required data.
Building an auto-updater for our system to be able to perform automatic updates of our Ruby client in a timely fashion over more than a thousand remote installations running at our customersโ premises.
Improving our Ruby clientโs performance
Adding tools to our framework to debug, instrument and log errors.
Longer term we will then focus on:
Refactoring internal data import pipeline. The main goal will be to move from sequential processing to parallel processing to improve syncs speed and stability by cutting through legacy technical debts.
Improving our syncs interacting with 3rd party API to optimise the amount of queries we perform and reduce necessary pressure. Sobriety at itโs finest!
Implement orchestration when downloading financial documents to improve performance and give our customer better feedback.
Bringing our administration sync pipeline to the next level by integrating technologies only used by our financial pipeline.
What makes the engineering team at Silverfin special?
Weโre a remote-first engineering team of 35 people distributed in 14 different countries. A priority for us is maintaining proper work-life balance. We avoid meetings as much as possible, accept deadlines only when absolutely necessary, and never expect anyone to work longer hours than theyโve signed up for. A day in our working lives is pretty boring, and we feel thatโs exactly how it should be.
Working with us means you can be flexible with your schedule. Itโs OK to disappear for a few hours in the middle of the day to run some errands, get a haircut, pick up the kids โ whatever reason, you donโt need to explain yourself. You also fully decide when you take time off: our team is sufficiently varied and well organised that there are always enough people around to handle the load, and in the rare cases itโs not, we will decrease the load instead of asking people to move their holiday.
Being remote-first means we favour asynchronous communication. We donโt shy away from chatting in Slack, but the important decisions or discussions are done in Gitlab issues, over email, or in our wiki, so thereโs a written, persisted record. Weโre mindful of maintaining long chunks of focussed time, which means we avoid @-mentions or PMs on Slack, and other triggers and interrupts. We encourage using Slackโs DnD function, especially when youโre not working!
Weโd be really happy to welcome you in our #engineering channel, but itโs not just virtual: we make sure we regularly get to see each other in real life too. Twice a year we fly the whole engineering team together to a different location in Europe, and at least once a year we join up with the rest of the company so we can spend some time together with the other departments.
What does working at Silverfin look like?
We work in nimble teams around 5 people in size, with each team taking ownership of a specific set of features of the application. Teams are responsible for a full slice across the stack, so both the backend as well as the frontend of each part is maintained by the same people. In team syncs, however, we almost have no front-end work to do, as most of of our work features do not involve a UI.
Our ops team ensures things run smoothly, deploys happen correctly, and will work with you when issues should arise. Weโre enthusiastic followers of the devops mindset, which means ops and developers work together to solve problems, and empower each-other to be self-sufficient, instead of throwing problems over the wall to the โother sideโ.
We run an up-to-date Rails monolith on the backend, with PostgreSQL and Redis for persistence and caching, and everything is running on a Kubernetes cluster in Google Cloud. Our daily tools include GitLab, Quip and Slack, with Zoom as our remote conferencing tool of choice. Team syncs also owns a Ruby client app that runs on windows servers to interface with local accounting software.
No code gets deployed without a code-review by a peer and testing is a must. Our pipeline automates deployment when the suite is green, and deploys happen dozens of times a day. Each team is currently doing Kanban, but theyโre free to follow whatever process suits them best. There are regular retros held to work towards continuous improvement.
Software for accountants is not considered to be very exciting, but we have our fair share of technical challenges. To give you a sense of scale: our database exceeds 10TB*, and our largest table has crossed the 10 billion row mark a long while back. We interface with more than 30 different external APIs, and provide third parties an API of our own.
*: Our ops team noted that this actually isnโt that hard to achieve if youโre just indexing everything, but it still sounds impressive, right?
What does your future look like?
Personal growth is key to staying motivated. At Silverfin you donโt need to move to management in order to advance. We see the individual contributor track and the management track as two different growth paths which every engineer can follow and switch between. You can be promoted, including pay raises, as a contributor just like as a manager.

We're looking for a dynamic individual who is no stranger to building well-designed, performant and effective front end web applications that support complex business rules/flows. You will start by learning from the experiences of our current team and our current offerings and become intimately familiar with our codebase. As you improve in your understanding of our business logic, you will contribute your React/Angular experiences by helping add features to our current app as well as greenfield development in React.js and React Native. We are looking for candidates who have:\n\n\n* 5+ years experience developing single-page web applications\n\n* 4+ years React, Angular or other frameworks\n\n* 3+ years experience with C# or Java\n\n* Ability to flesh out user stories to be consumed by the rest of the team\n\n* Experience working in an agile environment (e.g., Scrum, Kanban)\n\n* Strong interpersonal and communication skills\n\n* Excellent technical design, problem-solving and debugging skills\n\n\n\n\nMore About You\n\n\n* Ability to work and collaboration with team members remotely\n\n* Exposure to Mobile App development\n\n* BS in Computer Science or equivalent engineering degree\n\n\n\n\nYour First 90 Days\n\nBy Day 30 \n\n\n* If remote, you will immerse yourself in a virtual “Bootcamp” for 1-2 weeks with support from our senior development and product team, enabling you to better understand our culture, our product, and our tech stack \n\n* You will work with the Lead, QA and DevOps team to better understand our new web offering (React.js) \n\n* Working with the Lead, you will help implement a front end technical roadmap that takes scalability, testing and performance into account and present a gap analysis of what potentially can be done better based on our current solution\n\n* You will be responsible for taking on development items to get your hands in the current Web stack (75-90% of your time)\n\n\n\n\nBy Day 60 \n\n\n* Along with user stories and product features, you will help work on a backlog of technical infrastructure work that was identified in the first 30 days\n\n* You will aid in creating an efficient and effective SDLC process and work to better support your Scrum (PO, QA, fellow developers)\n\n\n\n\nBy Day 90 \n\n\n* You will play an integral role in delivering our Q2 2020\n\n* You will help instill the discipline of effectively monitoring and creating work items from production issues\n\n* You will further our tech stack by continuing to help implement the technical roadmap and future deliveries\n\n\n\n\nUnanet is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer.
