They range from building a realistic performance benchmarking suite for a package to improving interoperability between two projects, new feature development, creating a design system for accessible data visualization, and implementing a new website design - see https://labs.quansight.org/ for more about the types of things we do in Labs.\n\nDuring the internship, you’ll get to refine skills such as:\n\n\nContributing to open source\n\nPair programming\n\nConducting effective code reviews\n\nCommunication and collaboration\n\nTime management\n\n\n\n\nInterns will be working under the guidance of experienced mentors, who will guide and help review each project. They will also be able to meet and network with other interns in the same cohort and the larger Quansight team.\nEligibility and internship details\n\nPrevious experience contributing to an open-source project is helpful but certainly optional. Good working knowledge of Python and Git is necessary*. Other relevant skills - e.g., continuous integration, testing, benchmarking and documentation tools, and other programming languages like C, C++, Fortran, CUDA or JavaScript - may be beneficial for a particular internship project but are not required to apply.\n\nWe are also actively working on the technical writing, design, and accessibility spaces and welcome applications from folks interested in these areas (*Note that for applicants interested in areas such as design, Python and Git are not required, but instead, we’d like to see familiarity with design tools such as Figma or Penpot).\n\n\nStart date: flexible, mid-June to mid-July\n\nDuration: 2.5 - 3 months\n\nTime commitment: flexible, you should be able to commit between 25-40 hrs/wk\n\nEnglish language: we are a remote international company and we communicate in English. You do not need to be a proficient English speaker to apply, but should be able to communicate in written and oral English.\n\nCan be, but does not have to be, part of a formal curriculum. This program is open to current and non-students (including career changers, returners after a break in the workforce, boot camp alumni, self-taught developers/designers, etc.) with any educational background.\n\nThis is a paid internship.\n\n\n\nApplication process\n\nSubmit your application by the 4th of March 2024\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to your CV, we ask that you send a one-page cover letter. This is an opportunity to detail specific projects, your motivations, and anything not covered in a traditional CV template. You can also talk about why you are interested in working on open-source software and your goals for the internship and beyond.\n\nIf you have a portfolio, GitHub profile, blog or other resources, we ask that you share a link to them as well.\n\n\nInterview loop\n\n\n\n\nFirst interview: in the first call, we want to focus on the essentials - we want to get to know you and what you are passionate about. For the main part of the interview, we’ll ask you some general questions and maybe some light technical questions, and we’ll also ask you to talk us through a project (this can be any type of project - maybe one you developed at school, during a boot camp, as a side project, at your last internship or professional position). This project deep dive is a chance for you to tell us what excites you in your work or studies.\n\nTechnical interview: Our technical interviews do not involve code challenges, meaning they don’t focus on live coding or whiteboarding. In this stage, you can do a walkthrough of the code you wrote or some code connected to a relevant issue on an open source project. We will do a portfolio or design critique for design interns and discuss topics like user experience, communicating design decisions, and documentation.\n\n\nResults are communicated to candidates: we will aim to make a decision as soon as possible (within 2-3 weeks, but of course, this will depend on the number of applications we receive). To make this decision, we get everyone who interviewed you in a virtual room. We look at all the elements of your interview process and make a decision. By doing this, we ensure that we can make a fair decision and get a measured view of which project and mentor would be the best fit for you.\n\n We want to ensure that you’re in a space where you’ll get to work on the things you enjoy doing and are passionate about and get the support and guidance you need throughout your internship. \n\n\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Design, Python and JavaScript jobs that are similar:\n\n $60,000 — $110,000/year\n
\n\n#Benefits\n 💰 401(k)\n\n🌎 Distributed team\n\n⏰ Async\n\n🤓 Vision insurance\n\n🦷 Dental insurance\n\n🚑 Medical insurance\n\n🏖 Unlimited vacation\n\n🏖 Paid time off\n\n📆 4 day workweek\n\n💰 401k matching\n\n🏔 Company retreats\n\n🏬 Coworking budget\n\n📚 Learning budget\n\n💪 Free gym membership\n\n🧘 Mental wellness budget\n\n🖥 Home office budget\n\n🥧 Pay in crypto\n\n🥸 Pseudonymous\n\n💰 Profit sharing\n\n💰 Equity compensation\n\n⬜️ No whiteboard interview\n\n👀 No monitoring system\n\n🚫 No politics at work\n\n🎅 We hire old (and young)\n\n

Our team works on data visualizations, information design, creative story presentations and custom tooling to help tell stories in the NPR newsroom. (You can see some of our past work on our team blog and GitHub sites.) This is a temporary position, starting as soon as possible and running through the end of 2024, and can be based at our Washington, D.C., headquarters or at a remote location in the U.S. approved by NPR.\n\nIn this role, you will have the opportunity to help our audience make sense of the elections, including key issues, results and analysis. Your biggest responsibilities will be to help design and build our results infrastructure for primary season and the general election, and to work on related stories and analysis. You will be assigned other projects as bandwidth permits.\n\nOn this team, you will have to work quickly in a dynamic environment. Members of our team wear many hats — designer, reporter, data wrangler, developer, cartographer, sysadmin, etc. Depending on your experience and the team’s needs, you’ll also utilize different skills day-to-day. And you’ll work closely with various journalists and storytelling units around the NPR organization and across our network of member stations, including photographers and video journalists, beat reporters and show producers, copy editors, digital editors and engagement editors.\n\nThis is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.\n\nRESPONSIBILITIES\n\n\n* Set up and test our election results data pipeline (using data from the AP elections API and other sources) for primary elections and the November general election\n\n* Build user-facing election results displays for use on NPR.org and member station websites\n\n* Translate editorial goals into sustainable applications and infrastructure.\n\n* Work closely with individual story producers, editors and teammates to identify opportunities for visual storytelling, data visualization and/or analysis\n\n* Assess what work realistically can be executed in the time available and meet agreed-upon deadlines\n\n* Document your work for teammates, newsroom colleagues and/or external audiences, as relevant\n\n* Coach other team members, articulating story, design and code suggestions in a helpful and supportive way\n\n* Maintain and extend the team’s technical infrastructure and development best practices\n\n\n\n\nThe above duties and responsibilities are not an exhaustive list of required responsibilities, duties and skills. Other duties may be assigned, and this job description can be modified at any time.\n\nMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS\n\nThree or more years of experience developing for the web in a news, civic or data-related context\n\nEDUCATION REQUIREMENT\n\nBachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.\n\nWORK LOCATION\n\nRemote Permitted: This is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.\n\nREQUIRED SKILLS\n\n\n* Experience designing interactive or data-heavy projects with a static architecture\n\n* Experience with setting up servers, crons and server-side data processing workflows\n\n* Solid news judgment. You can think of software in terms of the information needs of the audience\n\n* Fluency in JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3, including responsive web design techniques.\n\n* Proven success implementing complex designs in HTML/CSS\n\n* Experience developing software projects using the Git version control system\n\n* Cultivate and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace\n\n* Cultivate and support an inclusive and equitable workplace culture\n\n\n\n\nPREFERRED SKILLS\n\n\n* Experience with the AP elections API\n\n* Experience with Node, EJS and other elements of our technology stack.\n\n* Familiarity with Amazon Web Services and provisioning AWS resources using the console, CLI and API\n\n* Experience working iteratively and collaboratively (for example, using Agile or a similar project management process).\n\n* Experience using web components, including custom elements and shadow DOM, or other JavaScript component frameworks (such as React or Vue).\n\n* Experience with GIS/mapping software such as QGIS, Leaflet, topojson, mapshaper, or ESRI.\n\n* Familiarity with data analysis techniques, especially in command-line or scriptable environments like Jupyter Notebook, Pandas or numpy.\n\n\n\n\nJOB TYPE\n\nThis is a temporary full time position.\n\nCOMPENSATION\n\nHourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $46.87-57.69 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.\n\nBenefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents.
