8returns is hiring a

Remote Senior Software Engineer

*tl;dr: Early-stage startup hiring remote Rails/React/etc developers (EU-timezones โ€” around GMT+1). We're seeking to build the OS for circular commerce.*\n\nAt 8returns, we're transforming one of the most frustrating, environmentally damaging and costly aspects of e-commerce โ€” returns. We built a technology that automates the returns process for retailers and makes data-driven decisions to connect each return to its best use.\n\nWe're still in the scrappy startup phase, so we are looking for people who are comfortable with ambiguity and having wide impact. We've been remote-first since Day 1, and care a ton about communication, autonomy, curiosity, and initiative.\n\nWe have happy paying customers and just raised our first round of funding from industry leaders. Our team is highly experienced, and has started and sold companies before. We also love learning from each other, and are looking for people who bring a new set of experiences and backgrounds to our team.\n\n**Why you might be excited about us**\n\n- We're working to solve a massive global problem - 10 billion pounds of returns end up in landfills every year and for retailers itโ€™s a trillion-dollar problem.\n- We're small, so you'll be able to contribute efficiently and without bureaucracy. You'll quickly have responsibility over big areas of our product. You'll also help build our company's culture.\n- We don't have a ton of meetings. If we can effectively solve a problem asynchronously, we do. When we do meet synchronously, you'll always have the opportunity to contribute.\n- You'll be able to work remotely and set your own schedule. We don't micro-manage and will help you do great work. Most of our engineers work EU hours, but organize their work day to be whatever's best for them.\n- We will mould your role to shape a career you're excited about. We care a ton about your satisfaction and job happiness, and will help prep you for whatever you're looking for in the future.\n- We work hard and also highly value balanced work/life. We care about family and your own personal development, and don't expect for you to be always engaged with work.\n\n**Why you might *not* be excited about us**\n\n- We're small (~10 people in the company now), so if you like more established companies, it's not (yet) the right time. Since we're an early stage startup, projects and priorities may shift.\n- Our customers love us, *and* there's a lot we can improve. It's a great place to be, but means there's some technical debt.\n- We can't (yet) provide close mentorship for junior developers, especially as we're remote and small. As we grow, we'll get a lot better at this.\n- Since you'll have a lot of responsibility and creativity over projects, they may not be defined perfectly initially. You'll be expected to bring your own experience and perspective to help us do the right things, and raise flags if you think we should do things differently.\n\n**Who you are**\n\n- You worked remotely before, or know that you'd work well with a remote team.\n- Ability to think creatively and critically and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often ambiguous work environment\n- 3+ years of experience developing high performance web applications\n - If you want to focus on frontend, experience with React is a big plus\n - If you want to focus on backend, strong knowledge of Ruby on Rails and experience designing maintainable systems, APIs, and integrations are great\n- You are able to decide what aspects of products need to be perfected and when to cut corners to ship faster\n\nThe main app is built with Ruby on Rails and React. We use Postgres, Heroku, AWS. While previous experience with these technologies is a plus, weโ€™re looking for someone with broad experience.\n\nIf we think you might be a good fit, we'll respond within 48 hours. \n\nPlease mention the word **TENDER** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi45). This is a feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $70,000 — $100,000/year\n
\n\n#Benefits\n โฐ Async\n\n

Whitespectre is hiring a

Remote Senior Ruby on Rails Developer

[Whitespectre](https://www.whitespectre.com) is a product-centric,Rails-led technology consultancy for both vc funded start-ups and large, established companies across the US and Europe. Weโ€™re also a product incubator with our own applications and b2b SaaS platform. As long-term partners to our clients, weโ€™ve played a critical role in their growth- both through the products we co-create and the expertise and processes we bring. Proudly remote first since 2013, weโ€™re a close-knit team of 75, working in fast-moving, cross-functional agile pods to solve interesting technical challenges and drive real business impact.\n\n**What's it like to be a Senior Rails engineer at Whitespectre?**\n\nOur senior rails developers are sharp technical experts with the ability to think like product owners- being able to advocate for code quality as a long term strategic investment while knowing when to adapt a more start-up mentality to deliver rapid business value. They drive architecture and implementation decisions, mentor other engineers, and stay up to date with the latest rails techniques and trends as part of the collective Whitespectre rails brain trust.\n\nWhitespectre operates on a fully-modern tech stack- toolset includes Rails6/7, Postgres, Elastic, REST/GraphQL, ReactJS, Typescript, Webpack, CI/CD with Docker, Heroku/AWS, etc. Working smartly is important to us; automation, dynamic environments spin up with new feature branches and slack bot integrations control our production releases.\n\nThe majority of our projects involve building greenfield applications and our delivery teams typically own products end to end - your thinking and contribution make a big impact!\n\n**What else is great about working at Whitespectre?**\n\n* Interesting challenges: Weโ€™ve done everything from scaling high-performance, high concurrency backends, building beautiful (but complex) user interfaces to handling real-time event streams from hardware devices..\n* Grow everyday: Be in an environment that embraces constant learning and exploring - whether itโ€™s a new skill, a new way of thinking, or a new product experiment, we know itโ€™s the key to staying motivated.\n* Career progression: Get the opportunities, knowledge sharing, and mentorship to grow- whether you want to move into management or Principle Engineer. We proudly promote from within.\n* Work-life balance: Thrive at work, but know that it doesnโ€™t take over your life. Clear processes and realistic planning avoids fires!\n* Paid Meetups: We love remote, but face to face is pretty great too. Come meet with your colleagues in Barcelona or at a local meetup.\n* Competitive rates, long-term outlook: We offer competitive rates and a long-term, full-time contract position. Many of our team members have been with us for 5+ years.\n* Want to know more? Check out [Glassdoor](https://www.glassdoor.com.ar/Reviews/Whitespectre-Reviews-E1575846.htm?countryRedirect=true)\n\n**This is the right position for you if want-**\n\n* The challenge of collaborating with business stakeholders and Product Managers to advocate for technology solutions while bearing in mind the tradeoffs for business results\n* The responsibility of designing new architectures and being confident to justify your technology decisions. (Plus debating and recognizing when a colleague has an even better idea!)\n* To solve problems that canโ€™t be addressed by just searching Stack Overflow\n* The opportunity to go outside your core Rails expertise and strengthen skills with other technologies (e.g. Elixr, React.js or Node.js)\n* An environment where excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) are valued and honed\n* A culture where people from different backgrounds interact, collaborate and reach a shared goal\n\n**The โ€œcheck the boxโ€ Requirements**\n\n* 5+ years of experience in software development, 3+ years of Rails\n* Experience contributing to technical decision making within a team\n* Can work full-time with significant crossover with the core hours: 11am - 6pm Central European Time\n* Live outside of the US. Please, no recruitment agencies.\n \n\nPlease mention the words **CHEESE STADIUM GADGET** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi45). This is a feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n $50,000 — $90,000/year\n \n\n#Location\nWorldwide

This helps us focus on shipping small, iterative changes and responding quickly to changing business or user needs.\n\nOur platform uses the Ruby on Rails web framework along with the React JavaScript library with Typescript, and we use unit, integration and acceptance tests to drive design and keep everything working. Every engineer has the ability to deploy, and we deploy multiple times per day to a large-scale system on AWS, supported by our Site Reliability Engineers.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nAs a software engineer at FutureLearn youโ€™ll collaborate in a multidisciplinary product team to deliver working software that has an impact on your teamโ€™s metrics. This will include writing Ruby and JavaScript to deliver new features for our users, as well as refactoring our codebase to make it more pleasant and productive to work on.\n\nYouโ€™ll be comfortable writing modular code and thinking about how your work fits into the big picture, and collaborating with our data engineers to make use of our reporting and analysis.\n\nYouโ€™ll have strong communication skills, and be comfortable discussing problems and solutions with your team-mates. Youโ€™ll be asked to give your input & ideas to help make decisions and shape features via design sprints, planning, story mapping and other product development activities.\n\nYouโ€™ll enjoy learning, teaching & sharing your experience with your colleagues in various ways; we encourage code review, pairing, mentoring, giving (and watching!) regular lightning talks, and getting & giving regular feedback.\n\nRequirements \n\nWeโ€™re looking for people with experience with Ruby and Rails.\n\nExperience with JavaScript, React in particular, TypeScript, GraphQL and Next.js would also be valuable.\n\nYouโ€™ll have previous experience building, maintaining and deploying a large interactive web application at scale, taking into account performance, security and maintainability.\n\nYouโ€™ll have experience writing high-value tests and have a good understanding of software design principles.\n\nIdeally youโ€™ll also have experience of incrementally improving a large legacy codebase and shaping it into sensible, well-organised modular components, alongside delivering features in a cross-functional agile product team.\n\nBenefits \n\nSalary: ยฃ45k-60k (mid) or ยฃ60k-75k (senior) depending on experience\n28 days holiday (plus 8 days public holiday)\nBuy & sell up to 5 days holiday\nWestfield Healthcare Cash Plan\nFree access to Calm app\nDedicated personal learning & development budget\nCharity day (volunteer for a charity of your choice)\nCycle to work scheme\nSeason Ticket loan\nFlexible working environment/hours\nPension (4% employer / employee contribution)\n\nAbout FutureLearn\n\nFutureLearn is a leading social learning platform formed in December 2012 by The Open University and is now jointly owned by The Open University and The SEEK Group. FutureLearn has over 10 million people signed up worldwide. FutureLearn uses design, technology and partnerships to create enjoyable, credible and flexible short online courses, microcredentials, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate degrees that improve working lives. It partners with over a quarter of the worldโ€™s top universities, as well as organisations such as Accenture, the British Council, CIPD, Raspberry Pi and Health Education England (HEE). Itโ€™s also involved in government-backed initiatives to address skills gaps such as The Institute of Coding and the National Centre for Computing Education.\n\nApplications\n\nPlease use our online form by pressing 'Apply for this job' below, including your CV and a cover letter telling us why you'd like to come work with us.\n\n\nSoftware Engineer interview process\n\nWe do an initial competency interview which consists of some screening questions, like checking your right to work in the UK (unfortunately we canโ€™t sponsor visas), and your experience in our hiring competencies.\n\nThis first interview has two purposes: it's a chance for you to ask questions about how we work, and for us to find out what you're looking for from your next role.\n\nWe'll also be interested to find out more about your curiosity, initiative, technical, communication and teamwork skills. So we'll be interested to talk about things like: your approach to dealing with difficult situations like dealing with conflicting or ambiguous requirements, how you communicate your work with others and how you learn new things and teach others.\n\nThe final stage interview consists of a pairing session with one of our engineers. You'll also get the opportunity to meet a couple of people from the Product org to ask any further questions.\n\nHow we assess candidates\n\nWe use a set of competencies to evaluate candidates throughout the interview process: communication, initiative, teamwork, curiosity and technical skill. Remote React Rails Software Engineer

# Software Engineer (Mid / Senior Positions Open)\n## LeadSimple, Inc\n\nLeadSimple is a fully-remote, motivated team solving big problems in the property management industry. Bootstrapped since 2013, we're passionate about helping small businesses simplify growth and streamline operations, providing the leading CRM in our space. Engineering works closely with our Product and Success teams to discover and deliver features that will make a real difference in a product our customers use every day.\n\n**Tech Stack**\nIn 2019 we re-built our tech stack in a phased rewrite (rather than a big-bang project) to adopt React, Typescript, and Relay on the front-end, talking to a GraphQL API powered by Ruby on Rails. (We also have a side project written in Elixir.) We have experience refactoring a large codebase, so we seek to move fast without creating technical debt (test coverage is important). We practice continuous deployment, dividing work into weekly sprints.\n\n**Team**\nWe're a _fully remote team_ working across 6 time zones, and we make heavy use of Slack and Zoom for communication throughout the day. We value work/life balance and work at a sane pace, 40 hour weeks, Monday - Friday. Our engineering team currently maintains 2-3 hours of overlap with US Pacific Time, to facilitate collaboration.\n\nWe prioritize customer impact across the organization. Our Success and Product teams work closely with end users on a daily basis, using their feedback to refine our roadmap and assist Engineering in creating an exceptional product.\n\nWe're looking for motivated and productive team members to help accelerate progress on our roadmap. We're open to mid or senior roles at this time.\n\n## Mid-Level Software Engineer\n\nYou have a solid understanding of core engineering concepts, are able to master our tech stack, tools and processes, and become a productive contributor to new feature development.\n\nRequired Skills:\n* Experience with Ruby on Rails and 1 or more of our other core technologies: React, Typescript, RelayJS, GraphQL\n* Taking well-scoped components to completion within a reasonable time frame\n* Great communicator, asks questions, explains themselves, open to feedback\n* Proficient learner and problem solver\n* Cares for the end-user (see [The Product-Minded Engineer](https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/the-product-minded-engineer/))\n\n[Apply Here](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeF5zo6hIcTQK8gP9LLGz6sTZMXGI1vDHPVbkpISxiy9CvOfQ/viewform?usp=pp_url&entry.473179885=Software+Engineer)\n\n## Senior Software Engineer\n\nYou are a rock-solid engineer with mastery of at least one domain. You can own technical design for projects of moderate complexity, understand trade-offs, debug systems in your domain, and write high quality code while getting a lot done. You're collaborative and an active contributor to product discovery conversations.\n\nRequired Skills:\n* Experience with 3 or more of our core technologies: React, Typescript, RelayJS, GraphQL, Ruby on Rails\n* Experience translating complex user stories into detailed requirements\n* Highly productive, moves fast without breaking things\n* Great collaborator, takes initiative, asks questions, explains themselves, open to feedback\n* Proficient learner and problem solver\n* Cares for the end-user (see [The Product-Minded Engineer](https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/the-product-minded-engineer/))\n\n[Apply Here](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeF5zo6hIcTQK8gP9LLGz6sTZMXGI1vDHPVbkpISxiy9CvOfQ/viewform?usp=pp_url&entry.473179885=Senior+Software+Engineer)\n\n## Benefits\n\nBoth positions offer the following benefits:\n* Early Off Fridays (every other Friday afternoon off)\n* 3 Weeks Paid Vacation (in addition to the above, but includes local bank holidays)\n* Healthcare Allowance\n* Vacation Allowance\n\n\nSelected candidates will be invited to a 30-minute call, followed by a 90-minute structured interview to discuss your career and some technical questions related to your role.\n\nIf you enjoy owning the outcome for customers, influencing product, and honing your craft, we'd love to talk to you.\n\n[Apply Here](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeF5zo6hIcTQK8gP9LLGz6sTZMXGI1vDHPVbkpISxiy9CvOfQ/viewform) \n\nPlease mention the words **SEEK INVEST DRIFT** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi45).
