Basket is hiring a
Remote Senior Backend Engineer

Overview

We are Basket (www.trybasket.com) โ€“ a fresh and exciting new approach to save, share and follow the things you love, and the people who love them too. Basket keeps you organised, up to date, and helps you buy better across all shopping categories.

To continue our growth weโ€™re seeking a Senior Backend Engineer located in London or Auckland. With your strong production experience of Python and ETL processes, youโ€™ll play a key role in our data extraction, transformation pipelines, data storage (MongoDB), and data delivery via AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL). Youโ€™ll need a deep understanding and experience with serverless AWS (Lamba with EventBridge), and knowledge of the serverless framework (https://www.serverless.com/) would be a significant benefit.

To excel in this role, youโ€™ll learn quickly, think big, and deliver rock-solid results in a fast-paced startup environment. You implicitly know how to balance safe decisions while proactively researching and running code experiments. Youโ€™re someone who embraces collaboration and feedback with open arms. You continuously look for ways to grow yourself, help teammates, and opportunities to make the products you work on stronger. This is a chance to join an innovative team where you will be challenged, and have significant input to shape a product we believe will become a global household name. This is an exciting opportunity to join our backend team at a pivotal time in our journey.

This role is development focused, with a small amount of coaching required for junior team members.

How We Work at Basket

At Basket, we work in 2 week development cycles with a clearly defined goal. Weโ€™re inspired by companies like Linear where quality work is more important than quantity of features released. We plan each cycle well ahead of time with team discussions, research and workshops to make sure weโ€™re making informed decisions.

Hereโ€™s how our typical cycle looks;

  • 2 weeks before a cycle we plan and define requirements for features

  • 1 week before a cycle we do technical due diligence and write acceptance criteria

  • During a cycle we write code using test-driven development, test code to development and staging environments, collaborate with QA, Design and PM team members to ensure features are production ready.

What You'll Do

  • Write, improve and maintain serverless functions to accurately transform and load data into efficient and organised MongoDB storage

  • Develop and maintain 3rd party data clients to enrich stored data

  • Create and update API endpoints for a frontend client using AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL)

  • Analyse and tune application performance with a focus on efficiency using analytics tools such as Lumigo, Sentry, Segment and DataDog

  • Research and architect solutions using serverless architecture patterns

  • Implement and improve analytics and application monitoring performance

  • Approach your work using test driven development (TDD) to ensure the integrity of your code and our services

About You

  • Native English (this is essential)

  • Located in London, UK or Auckland, NZ

  • 5+ years full-time work experience as a backend engineer on production services

  • Advanced knowledge of Python ^3.10 and/or NodeJS ^15.0.0

  • Deep knowledge of webpage parsing, including XPath and Regex

  • Excellent experience with MongoDB and DynamoDB

  • Production experience with AWS services in a serverless microservices context, such as Lambda, AppSync, API Gateway, S3, SNS, SQS, Cognito, EventBridge

  • Lots of energy and enthusiasm about being part of a small, progressive team

Good To Have

  • University degree in computer science, or equivalent experience

  • Experience working in a VC-backed startup environment

Our Culture

Our culture is built on respect, collaboration and a drive to shake up the world of shopping. Weโ€™re at the beginning of our journey with the opportunity for new team members to lead projects, and shape services that customers interact with daily. Our team members are conscientious, deep thinkers, always striving to be awesome human beings.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds at our company. We are dedicated to a policy of nondiscrimination in employment on any basis including race, colour, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.

About Heliax

Heliax is a public goods lab which researches, develops, deploys, and maintains open-source protocols and mechanisms designed to serve the everyday needs of humanity. Anoma is an intent-centric, privacy-preserving protocol for decentralized counterparty discovery, distributed solving, and atomic multi-chain settlement โ€“ a radically novel architecture for decentralized protocols marking the beginning of the third generation of architectures ever since programmable settlement.

Namada is Anomaโ€™s first fractal instance. It is proof-of-stake Layer 1 protocol for asset-agnostic, interchain privacy. The key innovations include ZCash-like shielded transfers for any assets (fungible and non-fungible), incentivised privacy sets, and interoperability with Ethereum via a custom bridge and IBC.

As a protocol engineer for Forest, you will join a small team and develop and maintain the Rust implementation of the Filecoin blockchain protocol, often referred to as a node or a blockchain client. You will be tasked with implementing new features, occasionally from a technical specification or a reference implementation; maintaining existing features; and ensuring the implementation stays compatible with the current specification of the protocol, and updating the code when upgrades are made to the network. The position is full-time and remote-friendly.

As a protocol engineer, you have a desire to implement and deploy novel protocols that have never been implemented before in that language, you have a passion for open-source software and understanding that you will be maintaining code that will be widely used on a decentralized network, you are able to clearly communicate and document your thoughts, and you have a desire to contribute to the space.

Responsibilities

  • Read and understand a protocol specification and be able to break it into issues and turn it into Rust code
  • Design and implement new features for the client
  • Refactor and improve existing features in the client
  • Ensure the client says compatible with the other client implementations
  • Collaborate with and assist team members on their issues
  • Collaborate with other protocol implementation teams to share knowledge on the protocol, whether it be high-level protocol details or technical details that are common to every client
  • Communicate effectively with the team and document your code and the client as a whole

Required skills and experience

  • Proficiency in Rust
  • Knowledge of system design in Rust
  • Be able to proactively dive into novel territory and share knowledge on what you've learned

Nice to have

  • Experience with Go, as the Filecoin reference implementation (Lotus) is written in Go
  • Experience with blockchain protocols, whether it be usage of a blockchain API, knowledge of how a blockchain operates, or any other experience
  • Experience with distributed systems, peer-to-peer systems, network programming, and cryptography
  • Experience writing software from a technical specification or a reference implementation
  • Experience maintaining a large codebase with many components and keeping it well-designed, future-proofed, and modular
  • Experience with documenting a large codebase, both for internal and user-facing components
  • Familiarity with open-source software principles

We strongly encourage you to apply even if you donโ€™t fit all the requirements. You donโ€™t have to match all the listed requirements exactly to be considered for this role.

Hiring Steps

Candidates for this position can expect the hiring process at Chainsafe to follow the order below. Please keep in mind that candidates can be declined from the position at any stage of the process.

  • Qualified candidates will be invited to schedule a 30-45 minute screening call with one of our tech recruiters
  • Next, candidates will be invited to schedule a 60-minute Cultural Interview with one of our Project Managers
  • Then, Candidates will be asked to complete a technical task that takes under 4 hours, but we provide up to 5 business days to complete
  • Last, candidates will be invited to schedule a 60-minute interview with the Team Lead

We welcome your fresh perspectives and ideas

At ChainSafe, diversity and inclusion are more than a statement; equality and accessibility are guiding principles embedded in who we are - and why we do what we do. We recognize the benefits of a diverse team and aspire to embed respect for all people into our culture, values, and day-to-day practices. We encourage women, LGBTQIA+ people, people of colour, and members of any other group underrepresented in the blockchain space (or tech in general) to apply.

ChainSafe is a remote-first company with an international team. We offer opportunities for personal and professional learning and growth, value autonomy and responsibility, and have a results-driven environment, flexible work hours and time-off policy, as well as competitive salary.

Salary will be determined through the interview process after a review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, equity, and location, as well as alignment with market data.

CompanyCam is hiring a
Remote Senior Mobile Developer

The Role

Weโ€™re looking for sharp, self-motivated, problem-solving Senior Mobile Developersย to join our engineering team.

As aย Senior Mobile Developer, youโ€™ll work alongside other engineers, designers, and product managers to tackle everything from huge company initiatives to modest but important bug fixes,ย from start to finish. Youโ€™ll also collaborate with your product team on discovery, helping to assess the direction and feasibility of product changes.

Most importantly, youโ€™ll actively contribute to the evolution of the culture and processes of a growing engineering team, especially our client engineering discipline (this is what we call the devs who work in React and React Native). We want want senior devs with opinions on patterns, code organization, and processes to help make sure our codebases scale healthily, and an interest in mentoring to help make sure our devs do too.

Working At CompanyCam

Our engineering team is remote-first, spanning every time zone in the United States. We welcome people from all backgrounds and really don't care whether or not you have a CS degree or even a high school diploma. All that matters is that you're not an a**hole and you're good at what you do.

Our Product and Engineering departments also do things a little differently than what you might be used to.

We use a customized version of Basecampโ€™sย Shape Upย method (fused with empowered product teams a la Marty Cagan'sย Inspired) to organize and execute our work.ย That means youโ€™ll work in a close-knit team consisting of a product manager, a product designer, and other engineers on an area of the product in 3-week cycles.

During cycles you'll spendย mostย of your timeย implementingย product improvements, but you'll also work withย yourย team shaping (generating and vetting) product improvements for next cycle. After each cycle your team will stop, reset, and decide to tackle another cycle or take a 1-3 week cool-down (a period of undirected work where youโ€™ll pursue educational opportunities, work on pet projects, or smash some bugs that have been nagging at you). Rinse and repeat until code nirvana.

Wait, I think thatย cool-down thing deserves an extra call out:ย We build into our process 25% of an engineer's time for undirected work.

Sounds nice, right?ย No sprinting, no scrumming, no death by 1,000 meetings. We protect our engineers' time, treat them like adults, and trust them to get their work done. Weโ€™re also big on not overworking people. Put in your eight hours of focused, quality work and then TURN. SLACK. OFF.ย No nights and weekends.

Our larger company culture is also refreshingly chill. We have fun, learn from each other, and donโ€™t take ourselves too seriously.

We cover the important stuff too. Weย pay well,ย offerย unlimited vacation,ย meaningful equity,ย health insurance, and other benefits.

And if I may (uncomfortably) toot our own horn for a second: our devs love working here! In this hyper-competitive software development job market, guess how many of our developers have chosen to leave in the last 2 years. Seriously, guess. Ready? ...One!ย

What We Ask Of You

Must-haves
These are our non-negotiables:

  • Show up: give us your best andย have the courage to do difficult but necessary stuff.
  • Grow up: take responsibility, learn continuously, and have a growth mindset.
  • Do good: treat your co-workers and customers the way you want to be treated.
  • Strong experience with and knowledge ofย React Native orย native iOS or Android experience paired with someย Reactย experience.
  • 5 or more years of experience working as a professional mobile developer. (Not all years of experience are created equal, so this one isn't set in stone, but for the sake of transparency, we've yet to come across someone with less than 5 years of experience that we would consider a senior developer.).
  • Reside permanently and currently somewhere in the U.S orย Canada.ย Alas, we're not set up to hire outside of the U.S and Canada.

Nice-to-haves
Day to day, youโ€™ll spend 90%+ of your time working in React Native, but, of course, thatโ€™s not all youโ€™ll work with. While experience with the following technologies are not required (weโ€™re cool with some on-the-job learning), you will see them with varying levels of frequency:

  • React (often)
  • GraphQL & REST (often)
  • Apollo & Redux (often)
  • Android Studio & Xcode (mainly to run the mobile app)
  • Java & Objective-C (approaching rarely, but we do have some native modules)
  • Ruby on Rails (just a touch)

We are not accepting applicants outside the U.S. and Canada at this time.

Please mention the word FAITHFULNESS when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMTAwLjI1LjQyLjIxMQ==). This is a feature to avoid fake spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and instantly see they're human.
