# Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack)\n\n## Simple Poll\n\nFull Time โ€“ Remote\n\n\n# About Simple Poll\n\n- Simple Poll brings polls and surveys natively into Slack. Learn more about the product on [https://simplepoll.rocks](https://simplepoll.rocks)\n- Wilhelm created Simple Poll in early 2016 to improve his own workflow when working in Slack. Started as a side project and then grew up to be a real company!\n- Simple Poll is one of the most popular apps for Slack and over the course of a year serves millions of users. As a member of the engineering team, you will be able to directly impact the experience of all of those users.\n- We are a fairly early stage company with a small and growing team. We're profitable, bootstrapped (no external investment) and very much plan to stay that way!\n\nBecause weโ€™re such a small team, you will be able to have a massive impact. Not just on Simple Poll the product and its millions of users but also on the company, our culture, and our day to day collaboration. \n\nFrom an engineering perspective Simple Poll can often feel similar to building an API. Slack apps work largely by receiving JSON payloads from Slack, making API calls to the Slack API, and then returning some JSON back to Slack. As such, our engineering work tends to be very backend-heavy and although we do have a web dashboard, writing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is more rare.\n\nIn our day to day work we face an interesting set of evolving engineering and product challenges:\n\n- One such challenge is dealing creatively with the constraints of the Slack platform. Since Simple Poll exists almost entirely within Slack, we are bound by many of the constraints and extension capabilities of the Slack platform, such as the block kit framework ([https://api.slack.com/block-kit](https://api.slack.com/block-kit)). A powerful set of tools is available to us, but the path to bringing a feature to life is sometimes not as straightforward as it seems.\n- We also constantly face trade offs between making Simple Poll more powerful (and implementing a long list of customer feature requests) while simultaneously maintaining and improving the simplicity that out customers love. Finding a good balance is important here and often we find that there is a way to achieve both capability and simplicity.\n- Slack is also constantly evolving and it is our responsibility to keep up with this evolution to ensure that Simple Poll works no matter what Slack context users find themselves in. Recent wide-reaching changes have been the introduction of Slack Enterprise Grid (multiple Slack workspace under the same umbrella) and Slack Connect (shared channels between different Slack workspaces). These changes make it more challenging to model Slack entities like users and channels โ€“ if youโ€™re curious to learn more about this problem, check out this blog post: [https://wilhelmklopp.com/posts/slack-database-modelling/](https://wilhelmklopp.com/posts/slack-database-modelling/)\n\n### Remote\n\nWe are remote-first with folks across Canada, the UK, and Germany ๐ŸŒ…ย  We love and embrace remote working (and have done so even in pre-pandemic times). But especially as the pandemic winds down and more travel opens up, we plan to regularly get everyone together for a one-week company offsite, probably twice a year. Our last company offsite took us to Toronto in Canada ๐Ÿ\n\n# The ideal candidate\n\n- Excellent verbal and written communication skills\n- A high degree of empathy\n- 3+ years of experience working on production web applications written primarily in Python\n- Experience with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS\n- You care about the product as well as the code\n- You enjoy picking up new skills and are always learning and growing\n- You have an ability to think critically and pragmatically about designing systems and building features\n- You enjoy shipping and getting things done\n\n# Responsibilities\n\n- Write, review, deploy, and maintain code in mostly Python (back end) and HTML/CSS/JavaScript (front end)\n- Collaborate with the rest of the team on defining and implementing new features and coordinate to prioritise engineering work\n- Debug production issues and implement corresponding fixes\n- Take ownership of parts of the codebase\n- Document the systems you help build, monitor, and maintain\n- Evaluate and recommend solutions to guide team decision making\n- Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes\n- Rotating responsibilities for on-call\n\n## You Might Work On\n\n- Architecting and implementing new features. Some of the things coming up on our roadmap are blind polls, ranked polls, exports to google sheets, and many more!\n- UX Improvements to make Simple Poll *simpler* and more flexible\n- Performance improvements to make Simple Poll faster\n- Improving reliability, which could for example entail setting up a new Datadog dashboard\n- Work with a designer to build a new page in our frontend and then implement that page based on their design\n- Something completely different! As an early stage company, we tend to be pretty "all hands on deck" when something comes up that we need to get done\n- Use and provide feedback on [Kolo](https://kolo.app). A local Django development tool that weโ€™ve been building\n\n# Practicals and benefits\n\n- You will report directly to the CEO (Wilhelm)\n- This is a fully remote, full time (40 hours per week) position. Your primary timezone must be between UTC-5 and UTC+2 (inclusive on both ends) to ensure we have enough overlap as a team\n- We'll buy you a new MacBook Pro and any other tools you need to do your best work (screens, accessories, etc.)\n- 30 days of holiday a year (including local national holidays), and you're encouraged to take all of it. You're also free to take additional time off for any other reasonable reasons, for example if you're sick (of course!) but also if you need to spend an afternoon taking care of something personal.\n- Sustainable and healthy working matters to us. We care about building delightful products for our customers, not hitting arbitrary daily hour counts.\n- The start date for this role is January or February 2022\n\n## Our principles\n\n*Inspired (often straight up copied) by the [Zen of GitHub](https://warpspire.com/posts/taste) and the [Zen of Python](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zen_of_Python)*\n\nExplicit is better than implicit\n\nSimple is better than complex\n\nFavor focus over features\n\nAnything added dilutes everything else\n\nMind your words, they are important\n\nCraft the details, they matter\n\nShip early and often\n\nNever miss an opportunity to delight\n\nBuild for the long term\n\nUse what you build with pride\n\nCreate lasting value for customers\n\nMistakes are possible when moving fast\n\nEmpower with courtesy and empathy\n\n## Our tech stack\n\n- Python + Django\n- PostgresQL\n- Heroku\n- Amazon Web Services\n- GitHub\n- HTML, Tailwind CSS, Vanilla JavaScript\n- Slack, Datadog, Zoom, Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion\n- Our own products! (including https://kolo.app)\n\n# How to apply\n\n[Apply via this form](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSerhXiCMolv2Y1dLodNvaRJu9eT-FCZ2LUgdrDwZtlDg2R0zw/viewform?usp=pp_url&entry.2062135242=Full-stack)\n\nHave any questions? **Ethyca** (https://ethyca.com) is a high-growth Series A startup building the trust infrastructure of the internet. Ethycaโ€™s platform powers data privacy for businesses facing regulations like GDPR and CCPA all over the world. We do this by building world-class tools, developer-friendly APIs, and secure, deployed applications to make it easy for our customers to integrate all their systems together to provide their users with powerful rights over their personal data.\n\nAs Ethycaโ€™s first technical writer, you will be focused on Ethycaโ€™s developer adopters onboarding to our fleet of open-source privacy products. The success of open-source products relies on great documentation and thus your technical expertise will act as the Welcome mat for all that land on our doorstep. Your writing style speaks to stakeholders in all enterprise verticals: engineers of every variety, lawyers, product managers, and business operations resources. Your super power is in translating complex technical concepts and value proposition to a clearly organized, concisely written, durable body of knowledge for any audience to understand. In this role, you will lay the foundations for a strong, long-term relationship between Ethyca and our growing developer community.\n\n## What you will do\nDocument deployment and product guides for Ethycaโ€™s open-source privacy tools, including Dockerized deployed agents, API services, and more\nDocument standards, guidelines, and best practices for engineers and peripheral business units\nOrganize documentation and make it easily discoverable\nWork closely with Ethycaโ€™s product team to stay current on product releases and roadmap features\nWork with Ethyca's marketing team to write and consult on technical-leaning marketing content\nMaintain a deep understanding of Ethycaโ€™s open-source products, the roadmap and the growing privacy landscape\n\n\n## Requirements\n* A self-starting **software engineer at heart**. With 3-5 years of engineering or technical writing experience working with SaaS software products, you know just enough SQL and noSQL, have implemented API and git documentation best practices, have gotten tangled in containerized deployments once or twice, and are familiar with cloud service management products like AWS, GCP, Azure. And we ๐Ÿ’™ markdown, and hope you do too!\n* **Empathetic to developers** and their needs. Youโ€™ve written developer-facing documentation for 1-3 years and are able to quickly adapt to community and internal feedback. Software engineers donโ€™t yet know that they should expect a lot from a data privacy product baked into their SDLC process. We are here to educate them and provide a best-in-class experience using our developer-focused open-source tools.\n* An **independent yet collaborative contributor**, your experience managing documentation projects independently in a complex, highly technical space means youโ€™ve worked with net-sec-ops, devops teams, data/base engineering teams, marketing, and product engineering teams and you know how and when to engage each.\n* A relentless **troubleshooter**. No problem too tough, no issue too elusive; we are looking for someone who will tackle the sometimes nebulous documentation from engineers and work through it, rather than around it. \n* An **egoless, yet expert** liaison between Ethyca open-source engineering teams and the developer community. Great writing is everyoneโ€™s responsibility at Ethyca, but sometimes we need a little help (okay, a lot of help!) from experts like you! You are an exceptional writer, nay, wordsmith, that understands that effective, concise writing leads to better comprehension of complex systems.\n\n## Benefits\n* Competitive cash and equity compensation\n* 100% medical and dental insurance coverage for you and your dependent(s)\n* Remote-friendly office hours and vacation policy\n* Sponsored company lunches and events\n* Parental leave and 401K plan\n\n\nWe are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. When itโ€™s safe to meet again, youโ€™ll have the opportunity to travel to NYC a few times a year for company events. We are currently unable to sponsor visas so require that you are authorized to work in the USA.\n\nWeโ€™re a data privacy company building a missing piece of the Internetโ€™s infrastructure: the trust layer that empowers users and businesses to manage data respectfully. Every day, weโ€™re solving challenges for customers and thinking about the future of human rights as society increasingly moves online. If this sounds intriguing and youโ€™re excited to shape that future with us, weโ€™d love to talk to you! \n\nPlease mention the words **PRICE DIFFER SLICE** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi4xNDY=). This means youโ€™ll be excited to release frequently and take total ownership of your code from writing to testing to deployment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRequirements\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe base our requirements on our 3 core values: Freedom, Impact, Ownership\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFreedom - You should be comfortable in fast paced and rapidly changing environments. You should be able to exercise autonomy rather than needing detailed direction.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImpact - This is a software engineering role. You should be capable of writing high quality code to solve business problems. We look for at least 1 year of professional experience in some type of business venture (i.e. a company, your own startup, or a project with live users). We value experience and aptitude over formal qualifications and education; our team ranges from self-taught hackers to computer science PhDs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOwnership - You should be proactive and do whatever you think is necessary for the team to achieve our goal. If you want to avoid things that are โ€œnot my jobโ€, this role is not a good fit.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf this sounds exciting, reach out to us here or at [email protected].\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGordian Software is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender identity and/or expression, sex, ancestry, citizenship status, mental or physical disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, veteran status, or military status. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Engineer, Backend, React, Python, API and Travel jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!

When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to pay to buy equipment which they then pay you back for later. Also never pay for trainings you have to do. Those are scams! NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! Posts that link to pages with "how to work online" are also scams. Don't use them or pay for them. Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. \nPlatform.sh is a groundbreaking hosting and development tool for web applications. We’re a European VC-Backed scaleup with a host of blue-chip Enterprise clients and a string of awards and grants. To reinforce our technical prowess, we are looking to grow our engineering team. If you’re looking for an exciting, high-growth opportunity with an award-winning, cutting-edge company, this could be just the job for you.\n\nWe run dozens of cloud regions all over the world with a mix of clients from individual developers running small development clusters, to the biggest companies on earth that run some of their critical apps on us.\n\nThe company is fully distributed and remote first, with a strong accent on diversity and inclusion in all of its dimensions (gender, sexual orientation, race, country of origin - you have it, we want it). You won’t find any ableism of ageism either. \n\nFor its groundbreaking PaaS solution, https://platform.sh is looking for a Pythonian Cloud Engineer with a taste for Go, good Linux system understanding, and a real hunger for the challenges of building robust, distributed systems.\n\nPlatform.sh is a PaaS shrouded in a lot of black magic (we can consistently clone a whole running cluster, with its state, databases, indexes in a matter of seconds). We want to get this down to the hundreds of milliseconds domain. Interested? There is more...\n\n\n* Our external API is pure Hypermedia REST + oAuth on top of Pyramid. It mechanizes the Git layer and needs more features.\n\n* We can consistently generate from the same manifest a Docker container, an LXC one, or VM disk images (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, OpenStack).\n\n* We probably have the highest container density in the industry. We need to get it higher.\n\n* We have been working hard on a fast, resilient, and cost-optimized observability framework in order to know how the system behaves, now we want to better predict how it will behave. \n\n* We support any Python, Ruby, NodeJS, PHP, Java, and .NET, Elixir, of course, Elixir, time to roll-out Rust, somebody needs to push that button.\n\n* We need to have more auto-healing on the high-availability clusters. We need more performance out of our multi-protocol ssh proxy. We need work on our Ceph Implementation; we have strictly cool things to do on the Edge. We need… great ideas on how to make Platform.sh even better. Interested? Join us!\n\n\n\n\nThis is a remote position and very occasional travel to cool places like Paris, France, may be required.\n\nSkills & requirements:\n\nRequired:\n\n\n* Be a really really good dev that likes testing, understands how an OS works, knows networking, how git works, and the constraints of a distributed system.\n\n* Be proficient in Python or in Go (expertise in either or both, highly appreciated). But if you are a sufficiently fast learner and got a couple of other languages under your belt (such as Lua, Rust, Erlang, Ruby, or C …), we might bite.\n\n\n\n\nWould be really great if you had:\n\n\n* Experience with C / C++ (we contribute to a bunch of upstream projects, like LXC) is a plus; love of C or C++ not required\n\n* Great knowledge of Git\n\n* Good Networking background (routing/protocols)\n\n* Good grasp of practical security and cryptography\n\n* Experience with other programming languages (e.g. Rust, Haskell, Java, Javascript, Ruby, Common Lisp, PHP)\n\n* Good knowledge of how the Web works (hacking Nginx with Lua a plus). You may want to brush up on HTTP before the interview\n\n* Good understanding of how database systems and search engines work\n\n* A good notion on distributed systems (consensus protocols like Raft/Paxos, eventual consistency models, gossip protocols)\n\n* Mad Debian Skills. Sporting a Debian plaid cloth during the interview is not frowned upon\n\n\n\n\nTo be clear so you are not surprised in the technical interview, this job is very much more for a systems engineer, rather than an application developer. So knowing about system calls is important, while knowing Django, not so much.\n\nA bit about seniority, diplomas, and experience: \n\n\n* We don’t care, at all, about diplomas, you have a Ph.D. in computer science? That is lovely! We love science. You are a self-taught hacker whose main deployment target for years was Arduino? You could very well be a match.\n\n* We have senior juniors and junior seniors. Everybody is. Some of us have been coding for multiple decades. Some of us are fresh out of school. We expect you to have some very strong points. But we know everybody has continents of ignorance; that’s fine. As long as you love learning; you will be surrounded by people who love to share what they have learned.\n\n* Specifically, there is a catch-22 for “seniority requirements” for underrepresented candidates. Try us. We will go the extra mile (more probably a kilometer btw). We will take into account any valuable candidate with less experience in DevOps and System roles if needs be. \n\n\n\n\nA bit about the interview process: \n\n\n* It is usually quite short. Two or three remote interviews. There will be no whiteboarding. Few if any algorithmic questions (unless you love those we would not like to frustrate the preppers).\n\n* The people interviewing you are going to be people you may end up working with. The interviews are going to be a bit “all over the place” with a bunch of detailed questions. The point is less to get the right answer than to give a glimpse of your “technical intellectual world”. You do not remember by heart the flags on a TCP packet? Well, neither do we, but it is a good conversation starter.\n\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Cloud, Engineer, DevOps, C, Git, Python, API, Travel, Senior, Junior, Nginx and Linux jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n

\nEngage builds software to make finding, hiring, and paying workers painless. Our software is causing waves in the UK recruitment industry, serving end hirers, recruitment agencies and workers, and we're looking to continue growing our product development team.\n\n\nTeam and Culture\nWe're a diverse team of people, both professionally and personally, bringing together a broad range of skill sets, experiences, backgrounds and cultures. We believe this helps us build better products for our diverse user base. It's for this reason that we have built a kind, supportive, inclusive team. We have team members from 19 different nationalities, and no gender pay gap.\nWe pride ourselves on being flexible and family-friendly - it's not unusual to see a baby in a team meeting. Being your best at work means having balance outside it - if you need to pick the kids up from school, visit a sick relative, or just want to walk the dog while the sun is shining, that's part of life. We expect you to work sensible hours and take your holidays.\nEngineering is spread across Europe, because we believe you can ship great software from anywhere. Our office is in London, where some of our product development team is based, including Product Management and Design - remote brainstorming can be really hard. We live in Slack, remote people come to London regularly, and we work very hard to make everyone feel included.\n\n\nThe Role\nWe are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our infrastructure team, responsible for:\n * Keeping our cloud infrastructure secure and highly available.\n * Supporting engineers with the necessary tools to ship product easily.\n * Facilitating monitoring, alerting and maintenance.\n * Working with our development team on adopting new offerings from AWS or other providers.\n \n\nWe run on Amazon Web Services and script using CloudFormation, Python and Puppet. Our application services are written in Java and Node, and run in Docker containers in Amazon ECS. \nDeployments happen multiple times per week, sometimes multiple times per day. We also make use of Lambda, API Gateway, Elasticsearch and Redis.\n\nBenefits\n\n * Competitive salary.\n * Paid holidays.\n * Stock options.\n * Apple or Linux equipment.\n * Occasional travel and accommodation in London.\n \n\n\n\nHow to apply\nIf you think you're a good fit for this role, send us a covering email along with your CV - we want to get to know you! Please also include your availability.\nAs part of our hiring process, we ask candidates to do a coding test, which is based on our in-production set of technologies. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to DevOps, Senior, Engineer, Amazon, Elasticsearch, Java, Cloud, Python, API, Travel and Linux jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n

\nCome join SparkMeter's software team and help increase electricity access in developing countries. As a Web Engineer, you'll help build the web application our utility customers use to set up and operate our affordable smart metering systems. Your work will be high impact: the electrification your code will help enable is not an incremental improvement, it is a fundamental change in the way real people live, work, go to school, eat, and relax.\n\nYou'll focus on these areas:\n\n\n* Frontend development. You'll be in charge of our web application's frontend, writing modern HTML, CSS, & JavaScript to develop new features and keep existing features working smoothly. You'll set the direction for the frontend stack, making sure we're choosing secure and supportable patterns, libraries, and tools.\n\n* Backend development. You'll work closely with Johan Dahlin, our backend-focused engineer, to write efficient backend code with a footprint small enough to run well on inexpensive hardware like Raspberry Pis.\n\n* Product development. Engineers are key contributors to the product development process at SparkMeter. You'll participate in the product design and refine the development roadmap by attending product meetings, helping to develop user stories, and vetting designs for usability and implementation.\n\n\n\n\nIn your first few months you'll:\n\n\n* Improve low bandwidth performance. Our customers use inexpensive Android tablets and high latency connections to access the web interface. You'll remove extraneous code, minimize requests, cache as much as you can, and explore other techniques to make the application work well for all users.\n\n* Build new data visualizations. Microgrids generate a lot of data. You'll help design new visualizations using Pandas, Highcharts, and other tools to to help our customers understand how the grid is working and make better decisions.\n\n* Visit a microgrid. You'll have the opportunity to travel to a microgrid project to see how it works, how the utility administers it, and the impact it has on the community — and you'll apply what you learn to improve our metering systems when you get back.\n\n\n\n\nSparkMeter's Stack\nOur smart meter firmware is written in C, and the meters communicate with each other and their base station with a TCP/JSON API over USB to radio. Python (Flask) web applications run both on the base stations and in the cloud. We use PostgreSQL and SQLAlchemy for a data store, Celery / RabbitMQ for asynchronous operations, and Pandas for data analysis. The Bootstrap-based web frontend uses a mix of Angular and traditional, server-driven views.\n\nWhere You'll Work\nSparkMeter's software team is based in our Waltham, Massachusetts office, but our engineers are all over the world. You're welcome to join us in the Boston area, to work remotely, or some combination of the two.\n\nHow You'll Work\nWe use an Agile-like workflow to run the development process. You'll join daily software team stand-ups to build relationships and report on personal development progress, and weekly bug triage meetings to make sure we're fixing as many bugs as we can before writing new code. You'll also work with other engineers in regular code reviews to teach and learn new coding strategies and catch mistakes.\n\nSparkMeter was founded to promote opportunity in underrepresented communities.\nSparkMeter's core value is opportunity: the opportunity for underserved communities to achieve great things. That's why our mission is to increase access to electricity in underserved communities - it is electricity and the services derived from it that unlock and create those opportunities. This value is reflected in our hiring ethos: we believe that the strongest teams have diverse backgrounds. Our approach to hiring has been validated by academic and industry studies that show that workforce diversity improves team and business performance. (It has also been validated by the quality of the team we've assembled so far!) We encourage applications from members of groups currently underrepresented in web development & software engineering. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Engineer, Web Developer, JavaScript, Python, Angular, API, Travel, Android and Backend jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n
