Remote Senior Engineering Manager

Weโ€™re now looking for an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to help move that vision forward!

As the Senior Engineering Manager, you will be managing a group of 6-8 engineers. You will ensure that they collaborate effectively, that the group has the right skills and capabilities, and that everyone in the group is excited to contribute.

You will also partner with Tech Leads of our product teams. While you will be responsible for the people on the team, the Tech Lead will be responsible for the technical direction and delivery of the team.

Day-to-day work

At Whimsical you can expect your day-to-day to include:

  • Ensure that your team has the right people to deliver on its objectives. You will do so through hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Coach the members of your team to support them and to help them grow professionally.
  • Work with your teammates to ensure that they get to work on challenging problems, are excited to contribute, and are recognized for their contributions.
  • Build trust-based relationships with the members of your teams through 1:1s to facilitate effective feedback and flow of information.
  • Lead different rituals and facilitate conversations to ensure that your teams collaborate effectively.

Indicators that this could be a good role for you:

  • Youโ€™ve successfully managed teams of Engineers in the past (minimum of 3 years experience)
  • You have considerable previous experience as a Software Engineer

How we work

We use an adapted version of Basecamp's Shape Up approach, which for us means:

  • We work in cycles of 5 weeks of focused work and 1 week of cool down.
  • We work in product teams, where each team owns the features and execution of certain product areas.
  • Each team owns creating "idea pitches" for upcoming cycles, and moving their product ideas along.
  • Each 5 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped for each team, each having very specific and well-defined requirements.
  • During cool down, each of us chooses what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.

As the Senior Engineering Manager at Whimsical, you'll be contributing by ensuring the well-being of the Engineering team and making sure that any blockers are removed efficiently and problems are being solved. And being a small company means that on rare occasions you may have to roll up your sleeves and help with some code.

In addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally pitch in and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.

Our primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.

But we also believe in spending quality time together, which is why we try to bring everyone from around the world together at least twice a year for what we call "Whimsical Summits". At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart.

As aย Mobile Developer, youโ€™ll work alongside other engineers, designers, and product managers to tackle everything from huge company initiatives to modest but important bug fixes,ย from start to finish. Youโ€™ll also collaborate cross-functionally with your product team on discovery, helping to assess the direction and feasibility of product changes.

Most importantly,ย youโ€™ll actively contribute to the evolution of the culture and processes of a growing engineering team, especially our client engineering discipline (this is what we call the devs who work in React and React Native). We want developers with opinions on patterns, code organization, and processes to help make sure our codebases scale healthily, and an interest in mentoring to help make sure our developers do too.ย 

Working at CompanyCam

Our engineering team isย remote-first, spanning every time zone in the United States. We welcome people fromย all backgroundsย and really don't care whether or not you have a CS degree or even a high school diploma. All that matters is that you're not an a**hole and you're good at what you do.

Our Product and Engineering departments also do things a little differently than what you might be used to.

We use a customized version of Basecampโ€™sย Shape Upย method (fused with empowered product teams a la Marty Cagan'sย Inspired) to organize and execute our work. That means youโ€™ll work in a close-knit team consisting of a product manager, a product designer, and other engineers on an area of the product in 3-week cycles.

During cycles you'll spend most of your time implementing product improvements, but you'll also work with your team shaping (generating and vetting) product improvements for next cycle. After each cycle your team will stop, reset, and choose to tackle another cycle or take a 1-3 weekย cool-downย (a period of undirected work where youโ€™ll pursue educational opportunities, work on pet projects, or smash some bugs that have been nagging at you). Rinse and repeat until code nirvana.

Wait, I think thatย cool-downย thing deserves an extra call out:ย We build into our process 25% of an engineer's time for undirected work.

Sounds nice, right?ย No sprinting, no scrumming, no death by 1,000 meetings. We protect our engineers' time, treat them like adults, and trust them to get their work done. Weโ€™re also big on not overworking people. Put in your eight hours of focused, quality work and then TURN. SLACK. OFF.ย No nights and weekends.

Your key area of focus:


A good CI/CD pipeline helps our engineers deliver features quickly, efficiently, and safely to production. A Senior Developer Tooling Engineer at Sendwave aims to apply the same principles to our tooling that supports our wider engineering organization.

Youโ€™ll be working on automating complex processes, reducing manual steps in day-to-day workloads, improving infrastructure health visibility, and improving our engineers' delivery of code. You'll take on the burden of managing how software gets delivered to production and ensuring that our infrastructure just works. In short, youโ€™ll provide leverage for the other engineers at Sendwave to continue making sending money as easy and simple as sending a text.

In the first few months, youโ€™ll:

  • Work on improving our development tools and experience so that engineers can ship work faster.
  • Build tools to help increase visibility into more opaque processes and pipelines.
  • Create automation for manual tasks, or workflows that span multiple different sources.
  • Explore and evaluate third-party or in-house solutions for complex process problems.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to handle problems outside of business hours so that our system is always available to our users
  • Uncover bottlenecks in our software delivery process and improve them.

What you bring to the table:

  • 3+ years of professional experience in DevOps, SRE, Software Development, or an equivalent field.
  • Experience working closely with key stakeholders across an organization's development, operations, and business units.
  • 2+ years working with AWS or Google Cloud.
  • Proficient in code deployment tools (Terraform, Puppet, Ansible, Chef)
  • Experienced with scripting (Bash, Python)
  • Experience working with Git and other CI/CD tools and pipelines.
