Hey there,
Oliver and Vincent here, co-founders of Memex.Garden, and weโre looking for a senior full-stack engineer to join our 3 person team. $7-10k/month salary plus shares in the company.
Memex is a personal & collaborative reader to collect, annotate and discuss websites, PDFs and Youtube videos. By yourself or with your team and community. We're in Beta and you can download it here: memex.garden. This is made for DAOs, commercial and academic research teams, reading clubs and students with the need to collaboratively read and talk about web content, papers, Youtube videos and (soon) images.
Weโre funded with support from Protocol Labs as well as leading people at Protocol Labs, Anaconda, Ceramic & RMRK.
Next, you'll be working on the collaborative curation and annotation workflows and on the sync between Discord and Memex Spaces to automatically extract links and conversations from there.
Youโll be the 3rd person joining our 2-person engineering team and will mainly work on the feature development. Upcoming are improvements to the collaboration experience, image support and the Discord sync.
While we use React, Typescript, Firebase and React Native, weโre not looking for a checklist of technologies. Weโre looking for people who can demonstrate experience and deep knowledge about programming and the surrounding skills to ship projects. (Weโre not open to junior positions at this moment.)
This means the ability to analyze problems, communicate how youโre going to solve them, the trade-offs involved with your approach, converting that into well-written code that your colleagues will have a good time continuing on and transferring knowledge. We value how much certain ideas and technologies fit the problem at hand and the overall architecture of the product, not which technologies are hot at at the moment.
The hurry to get out features and the need to clean up code so we can continue to ship quickly are at constant odds with each other. You can identify whatโs needed to keep us nimble and are good at communicating that to developers and non-developers alike.
Youโre passionate about opportunities you see to make the product and our experience working on our project great and clearly communicate advantages and trade-offs, but you recognize the different perspectives will enhance your ideas, or show that your idea is not the right fit for a particular context.
You value simple code that is easy to understand over smart code that people are afraid to change or costs needless effort to dive into (including for your own sake after youโve forgotten how the cleverness works.)
You can clearly communicate how much autonomy or guidance you need to get things done, but can also concisely keep people who depend on your work up to date and provide them with what they need to get their things done.
Weโre building a platform encouraging the encounter of opposing ideas, and are strong proponents of free speech and care for our fellow humans. So even though we may intensely disagree, we recognize those who we disagree with as people with fundamental rights and human needs. We donโt like to nurture cultures of cancelling, labelling people with all sorts of -isms and one-sided views across the political spectrum. Lets rather look under the hood and be curious about different viewpoints.
Why are we building Memex?
On our own we canโt possibly understand the majority of polarising topics we encounter every day. However, we all search, filter, read and take notes about content online and produce information valuable to other people.
Memex aims to make sharing recommendations and conversations become so easy that we can share what we normally are be too busy to share, build on each othersโ research and easily compare contrary ideas
We think that for a healthy social media environment it needs:
Companies that donโt have such strong profit maximisation incentives that usually lead to extractive business practices like attention/ad-based business models or lock ins
People with the ability to modify their own experience of a newsfeed and notifications
Freedom of speech, but not necessarily freedom of reach
Reduce need for centralised moderation through communal and individual content moderation
The economics behind Memex
We are a Steward Owned organisation in order to prevent profit maximisation incentives that lead to extractive business models and practices, while still giving the company the ability to grow big and fast. To enable that investors and team have a capped return on their investments and company can never be sold. We can get pretty rich if we are doing a good job, but not become billionaires.
We believe there is no collective intelligence without individual intelligence. For individual intelligence to be expressed in a digital space we need to be able to adapt our tools & connect workflows that individually suit our needs. The uncapped investor returns of VC money are the root cause of lock-ins that significantly hinder the emergence of an open knowledge society and collective intelligence that is able to overcome the complex challenges of our time.

Our 100% online, flexible, mentor-driven courses are setting the standard for globally accessible technical education. Through our online programs, expert Tutors and Mentors bring students from complete beginners to junior web developers in 6 months.\n\nWe are looking for experienced and passionate web developers all over the world to join our Mentor and Tutor pool and help define the next generation of tech talent by educating and empowering students across the globe.\n\nOur global pool of over 180 Mentors and Tutors in web development, user experience design, and user interface design fields has grown to include freelancers, entrepreneurs, consultants, and tech leads who passionately guide, motivate, and empower our students to create new careers in the tech industry. We are constantly searching for more teaching enthusiasts like you to join this pool.\n\nBeing a part of our Mentor and Tutor team is more than teaching. It is inspiring newcomers to the field to build, to problem solve, to think like a developer, and to increase their value as professionals. With their expertise from the field, Mentors and Tutors provide guidance and encouragement to their students each step of the way, from writing their first line of code to polishing their first professional App portfolio.\n\nWe are currently recruiting for two roles: Mentor (3+ years experience) and Tutor (1-3 years experience)\n\nYour Mission as Mentor:\nMost students will be beginners and are looking not only for a Mentor’s help and experience to master the necessary skills, but also inspiration and motivation to keep them focused and motivated along the way. You're their link and their point of entry into their new industry, so they want to hear that they'll be able to make it (if they put in the work, of course).\nAs a Mentor, you will be reviewing your students’ work on regular basis with a view to how it would fit into an industry-ready portfolio. Additionally, you will do one-on-one video calls to help prepare your students for their entry into their new industry. They’re going to want to know how you got your start in the industry, how you network, how you decide which companies and roles to go for, and much more!\nTo succeed in this role, you need to have a real drive to pass on your wisdom and secrets for success to the next generation of developers. After working with their Mentor and Tutor on their main course, they will work with a dedicated Career Specialist who will help them through their job search phase - but we look to you to help encourage the mindset they will need to enter their new industry.\nMentors communicate with students through Slack and our in-platform messaging tool and respond to students within 48 hours of receiving an assignment submission.\n\nWhat you will be doing:\nDuring your time at CareerFoundry you will equip students with the tools to become career-ready through:\n\n\n* Reviewing student "achievements" submitted through the CareerFoundry platform (a portfolio-ready piece of work coming at the end of a number of smaller exercises).\n\n* Advising the student specifically on career-related topics and helping prepare them to enter the industry through one-on-one video calls with each student.\n\n* Suggesting supplemental learning materials and personal insights in areas where students are struggling.\n\n* Working with a Tutor who will review work on a daily basis and answer day-to-day enquiries - you'll be on hand to step in for more advanced queries or for a higher level of troubleshooting.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s in it for you:\n\n\n* Remuneration - Mentors will sign a freelance contract and will be compensated on a monthly basis.\n\n* Flexible and Mobile - Work from anywhere with an internet connection and with a schedule that works for you.\n\n* Fulfilling - Directly impact students’ personal growth and help them succeed in their goals. Contribute to your industry and help shape the outlook of the next generation of developers.\n\n\n\n\n\nYour Mission as Tutor:\nTutors give feedback and constructive criticism on assignments and provide students with the guidance they need to improve their work through reviews and industry insights. Once a student submits an assignment, Tutors make sure that it meets all the requirements set out by the course curriculum, marking to rubrics we provide with each task to ensure students meet a consistent standard.\nWhen students are struggling with understanding a key area, Tutors are there to encourage them and provide supplemental tricks and tips to help them power through any roadblocks they encounter. Your job as a Tutor is not to hold a student’s hand, but to help them learn the troubleshooting and problem-solving skills they’ll need to work as a developer.\nTutors communicate with students through Slack and our in-platform messaging tool and respond to students within 24 hours of receiving an assignment submission.\n\nWhat you will be doing:\nDuring your time at CareerFoundry you will equip students with the tools to become career-ready through:\n\n\n* Regularly reviewing student exercises submitted through the CareerFoundry platform.\n\n* Code reviews and checking for fundamental understanding of concepts.\n\n* Suggesting supplemental learning materials and personal insights in areas where students are struggling.\n\n* Working with a Mentor who will advise the student specifically on career-related topics and support you as a Tutor.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s in it for you:\n\n\n* Remuneration - Tutors will sign a freelance contract and will be compensated on a monthly basis.\n\n* Flexible and Mobile - Work from anywhere with an internet connection and with a schedule that works for you.\n\n* Educational - Deepen your own knowledge of web development by teaching it to others and benefit from a Mentor’s advice.\n\n* Fulfilling - Directly impact students’ personal growth and help them succeed in their goals.\n\n* Résumé Gold - Mentoring and teaching experience is highly sought after by employers everywhere.´\n\n\n\n\n\nRequirements:\n\n\n* You are passionate about sharing your knowledge and experience, supporting students on their way to becoming web developers.\n\n* You have several years’ experience as a web developer in Javascript and Node.js, with a demonstrable track record showcasing your work for a variety of clients and companies. Your commitment to test-driven development is clear.\n\n* Knowledge of the following languages and concepts, with demonstrated experience applying them: basic SQL, React, Redux, Flux, Angular, static site generators.\n\n* You can show a first class portfolio or GitHub account with rock solid, relevant references to back it up.\n\n* Ideally, you will already have gained experience in teaching or mentoring in your professional life, or you have the right attitude and skills for it: you have time and patience for beginners and a strong desire to guide people along their career path in this field, with knowledge of the latest development tools and trends, a broad network of experts in the field and an in-depth understanding of industry practices. \n\n\n\n\n\nInterested?\nApply via the application form.\n\nAcquisition is not appreciated. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

\nVoiceThread is seeking an experienced front-end web developer with experience in both web and mobile application environments. \n\nWhy work at Voicethread?\n\nVoiceThread enables people to communicate better, to learn better, and to listen better. There's already a great deal of research that’s been published demonstrating the effectiveness of VoiceThreading in teaching and learning, however we think that education is the tip of the iceberg. Asynchronous online communication is almost universally text only and we are quite sure that’s going to change. Somebody just needs to make the experience usable enough and we’re well positioned to make that happen.\n\nThe platform we're building is a couple years ahead of its time, and yet has a decade long track record of impacting our users’ lives, often in a profound way. We also understand what motivates people who build great products and we see ourselves as one of them. We enjoy and value the power to make decisions, to work alongside masters and attain mastery, and we want to make something important. If you feel the same way, you’ll find a nice home at VoiceThread. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n
