Remote Backend Engineer

Backend Engineer - API Remote

Argyle is a fast-growing, remote-first Series B startup solving a systemic data problem.

Underneath the consumer finance industryโ€™s decisions and processes is static, analog documentationโ€”things like credit reports and paystubsโ€”designed decades ago for a world that no longer exists. Meanwhile, credit bureaus buy, move, store, and sell consumersโ€™ data without their knowledge or consent.

The result? A labyrinth of manual workflows and shortsighted underwriting models that obstruct financial access, compound operational costs, and impede innovation.

The solution is Argyle. Weโ€™re a real-time income data platform that lets our end-users instantly connect their employment records to apps and websites, so they can access and qualify for the financial resources they need to get ahead. Providers benefit from streamlined workflows and enhanced visibility that reduce costs and risk across the user journey.

Our mission is to give consumers the means to exercise ownership over their income, employment, and identity data in order to create a more equal, efficient, and effective financial system for everybody.

If youโ€™re looking to join a fun and ambitious group of people working remotely across dozens of countries, apply today.

About the team

The Systems Build at Argyle focuses on creating a modern architecture and software development practice to support rapid feature development. To join the team, you will have a strong software engineering background, have worked on systems with stringent uptime and security requirements, and may have led teams of engineers.

What will you do?

  • Design, build and maintain APIs, services, and systems across Argyle's engineering teams
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Work with engineers across the company to build new features at large-scale

You will also be involved in

  • Managing k8s clusters with GitOps driven approach
  • Operating databases with large datasets
  • Concurrent systems programming

What are we looking for?

  • Experience and a big passion for API design, scalability, performance, and end-to-end ownership
  • Strong experience in Java
  • Experience with Event-Driven Architecture
  • You hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems
  • You take pride in working on projects to successful completion involving a wide variety of technologies and systems
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment involving different stakeholders and subject matter experts

Why Argyle?

  • Remote first company
  • International environment
  • Flexible working hours
  • Stock Options
  • Flexible vacation leave
  • $1000 after a month of employment to set up your home office.
  • MacBook

Argyle embraces diversity and equal opportunity. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We believe the more inclusive we are, the better our company will be.

Apply for this job

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!

When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to pay to buy equipment which they then pay you back for later. Also never pay for trainings you have to do. Those are scams! NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! Posts that link to pages with "how to work online" are also scams. Don't use them or pay for them. Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. Here's the tl;dr:

This is Rise

We set out to build a company that helps teams make the most of their time. Why? Because time is the most valuable asset we can spend only once. Becoming more aware of the fact that we have limited time is one of our key beliefs. And, not coincidentally, the central point in Rickโ€™s bestselling book.ย

image

Overview

The Rise web app is written in TypeScript using React and Mobx. It is using websockets to receive real-times updates from the backend. We are looking for a frontend engineer to take the web app to the next level.

What you'll be working on

As an early engineer you'll work on many different aspects of the product. A few examples:

  • Improvements to our Rise cmd-K Command Center: enable users to quickly navigate and manage their calendars from one uniform component
  • Work with our backend team to define a scalable and extensible API
  • Improve the app reliability by applying different types of test coverage (integration, unit, etc)

What our ideal candidate looks like ๐Ÿ’…

  • Extensive experience with Javascript and/or Typescript
  • Extensive experience with CSS
  • Extensive experience with React and/or Angular
  • Cares a lot about high quality, readable, structured code. Advocates best practices and architecture patterns. Is able to make trade-offs between extensibility, optimization and execution speed. Empowers others by reviewing code.
  • Proficient with different types of testing (integration, unit, stress, etc)
  • Has a habit of being paranoid about security and privacy (input validation, network encryption, authentication, authorization)
  • Is autonomous, able to independently pick up tasks and full projects and work through them end-to-end
  • Is product and user minded: is always focused on how their work will impact or optimize the experience of Rise users

We realize that as a founding team we're from similar backgrounds, that we have unconscious biasses and that we have work to do here. This is why we explicitly want to invite and encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply.

You'll be responsible for building and maintaining the tech we use at all levels in our stack: storage, databases and containerised applications all the way through to request routing, CDN integration and email deliverability. You'll also be involved in collaborations with other areas of the business - for example integrating Ghost(Pro) with billing and support systems.\n\nAll our infrastructure is managed and deployed through config management and supported by a lot of custom code - so being comfortable with git and software development (Node/Python) is important. Our infrastructure comprises more than 100 servers across two datacenters, running Ubuntu and managed with Saltstack, sitting behind a fairly deep CDN integration. Most common tech across our instances includes MySQL, Varnish, OpenResty/Nginx, LXC, Gluster, and a lot of Node.js.\n\nThis role includes responsibility for being part of an on-call rota that includes weekends and holiday cover, but the team spans multiple timezones so incident management responsibilities typically follow the sun. All infrastructure roles at Ghost are inclusive of on-call responsibilities, and we do our best to be as flexible and open to working with everyone's schedules.\n\n## Skills and experience \n- Strong experience with automation as a core skill\n- Experience and confidence in managing, deploying and maintaining complex projects across several different environments\n- Experience specifically relating to web hosting at scale, containerisation and continuous delivery\n- Exceptionally clear communication, especially when identifying and responding to infrastructure failures\n- Managing infrastructure requirements and optimisations based on app performance and user load scenarios\n- Distributed systems, database clustering and replication management\n- Platform monitoring and observability\n- Backup and DR planning, plus common security issues and mitigation strategies\n\n## Who you are \n**Confidently independent.** \n\nAll teams at Ghost operate fairly autonomously, and all team members are responsible for helping make decisions about what needs to be done. \n\n**An active collaborator.** \n\nWe look for people who actively want critical feedback on their work early and often, and who get a kick out of refining and pushing what they do as a collaborative process because it creates a better end result.\n\n**Meticulous about quality.** \n\nQuality matters a great deal in everything we do, whether that's engineering, content or design โ€” we care about creating things which we're proud of.\n\n**A clear communicator.** \n\nAs a remote team which communicates almost exclusively through writing โ€” concise, written communication is essential.\nHumble but opinionated. We enjoy working with smart people who have lots of ideas, yet are happy to discard their former opinions whenever a better way of doing things presents itself\n\nWe don't mind where you're based or what hours you work, but this role requires some working-hours overlap with the rest of our infrastructure team, based between Europe and Australia.\n\nWe value diversity of all types at Ghost and our team is made up of a kind, thoughtful group of people with a wide range of backgrounds. Some of us are single, others are married, while others are parents. We actively try to find people with different perspectives and experiences to the ones we already have. \n\nPlease mention the word **REFRESHING** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMTguMjIwLjIyNC4xMTU=). Some web applications are customer-facing, some are for internal use only. We recruit models, make shoots, edit and release them. Customers are charged for access per month or per-scene using our in-house billing software. Weโ€™ve been running profitably for the last 21 years making human-friendly porn.\n\n**Infrastructure**: All our infra is on AWS. Containerised. ~35 projects, a range of sizes, most strictly separated into Staging and Production environments.\n\n**Your colleagues**: We select for passion and devotion to core skills. 28 people, men and women, professionals from all over the world. GLBTQI+ friendly. Dev team of six (including you).\n\n**Our development teamโ€™s approach**: Agile development methodology with monthly sprints. Strong focus on unit tests and TDD, CI, design patterns and refactoring, and taking responsibility.\n\n**What itโ€™s like here generally**: Experienced, passionate, talented, and from diverse backgrounds. Shared desire to see the company and people in it succeed, while being socially responsible. Collegial environment of teaching, sharing, learning and developing skills. All people have a real, direct and daily influence on the direction and success of the company.\n\n**What itโ€™s like here technically**: AWS. Infrastructure as Code (Terraform). Docker ecosystem. Modern and legacy PHP ecosystems (most projects are PHP). Some Perl apps, and Javascript (Lambdas) scripting. Monthly accredited IT security training via hackedu.com (paid training for 6 hours a month).\n\n**The work environment for the Sys Admin**: Casual, relaxed, constructive, engaging. When necessary, youโ€™ll be in contact with the Product Owner, Developers, QA Tester and Lead Developer via Slack or similar collaboration tools. Trello used for Sys Admin Support tickets. Mostly, youโ€™ll be left alone to maintain the infrastructure and solve Support cards as and when they come up. No scheduled meetings or virtual standups.\n\n**On-call component**: The Sys Admin is on-call 24/7, but historically, thereโ€™s less than one โ€œwake upโ€ call per year and around 95% of the work has been done in business hours, the remaining work in โ€œ18/5โ€ time. Relief periods are scheduled where the Sys Admin is not on-call, on a schedule we all agree to.\n\n**How deadlines work**: We donโ€™t do deadlines. We prefer open communication. For planned projects, people do research, make estimations in Story Points, and deliver roughly in that timeframe. However, issues raised for attendance by the Sys Admin are assigned a Business Urgency rating, which include expected โ€œcompleted byโ€ times.\n\n**What youโ€™d be doing**: Maintaining existing infrastructure. Creating new infrastructure. Extend functionality of existing infra. Reviewing logs. Improving security. Supporting others in the business for solving infra-related problems, and administering some access. \n\n**State of our code bases**: Healthy, well-maintained, minimal technical debt, well-documented. Stored in Github (along with our Infrastructure-as-Code repository).\n\n**Your challenges**: Performance implications of securely serving multiple ~5,000 page requests per-hour applications. We mainly use modern tech (with some legacy apps). Creating CI pipelines for existing projects. Reducing AWS costs. Improving customer experience.\n\n**Concerned about your rep after working in the adult industry?** Donโ€™t be. Previous technical staff have said this about finding new roles, after working with us: \n\n* โ€œโ€ฆeveryone considered it as an asset, and I agree with this. abbywinters.com is a challenging, high availability, high traffic environmentโ€\n* โ€œabbywinters.com background is received very favourablyโ€\n* โ€œIt isn't an issueโ€ฆ If anything, people are just surprised to learn that adult [companies] has its own development teamsโ€\n* โ€œ[prospective employers are] envious, and never negativeโ€.\n\n**Your technical competencies**: Advanced Linux system administration; Advanced knowledge of AWS: VPC, EC2, ECS, RDS, CloudFront, Lambda, Media processing and other common services; Advanced knowledge of Terraform; advanced knowledge of the Docker ecosystem; comfortable with modern and legacy PHP ecosystems, Perl (apps) and Javascript (Lambdas) scripting.\n\n**Required experience**: Working daily as a Sys Admin with mission-critical applications in a commercial environment for at least five years, on a cloud service provider (eg, AWS, Azure, GCP or similar).\n\n**Handover / Training**: All our infrastructure and associated documentation is in excellent condition and kept in a always-ready-for-handover state. The outgoing Sys Admin will provide a handover, and will be available for questions for the first month. \n\n**Favourable skills and experience**: Extensive AWS and Terraform experience.\n\n**Remuneration**: โ‚ฌ75 Per hour. Historically, the Sys Admin has worked around 20 hours a week (86 hours a month), but that can vary depending on projects and issues. We expect 20 hours week to be the average for the foreseeable future. \n\n**Before applying**: Read our application guidelines and requirements at careers.abbywinters.com, and check the free areas of abbywinters.com to make sure youโ€™re comfortable with the material we produce. See how we introduce ourselves to prospective models at femalephotofun.com, and how we work with our existing models at models.abbywinters.com.\n\n**Interview and qualification process**: Initially selected candidates will attend a 10-minute phone screening call to check technical compatibility. Subsequent interviews will be with the Owner of the company and separately the Lead Developer and Sys Admin by video chat. Promising candidates will be offered a paid ~6 hour (at โ‚ฌ75/hour) assignment to demonstrate their skills and approach.\n\n**To recruiters**: If youโ€™re willing to do a 5% deal with a six month guarantee, we can talk. Otherwise, please do not message us.\n\n**To web services / IT companies**: Weโ€™re seeking relationships with an individual Sys Admin, not a company that provides services. If youโ€™re a one-person company, please apply. Otherwise, please do not message us about this opening. \n\nPlease mention the word **SPELLBIND** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMTguMjIwLjIyNC4xMTU=).

**All roles with Chainlink Labs are globally remote based. We encourage you to apply regardless of your location.**\n\nThe infrastructure team enables Chainlink development and maintains services that support the health of the most widely-adopted oracle network in the world. As a Site Reliability Engineer, you will help us solve some of the unique challenges of blockchain oracle architecture and be primarily responsible for the Chainlink ecosystem's off-chain part.\n\nWe are distributed across time zones and continents, and we embrace remote work. In the Infrastructure team, we follow the infrastructure-as-code approach and practice GitOps. Our on-call rotation uses the follow-the-sun pattern: you will be on call some of the time, but there should not be any overnight shifts.\n\nWe all have different backgrounds and are determined to help you succeed no matter where you are or who you are. If you think you would do a great job at Chainlink, we are looking forward to speaking with you, even if you don't match 100% of the job requirements: those describe people we've usually had a great time working with, but they're not a tick-box exercise. \n\n**Your Impact**\n\n* Support monitoring services that watch over the entire Chainlink network. \n* Deploy and maintain various externally-facing services like reference Chainlink nodes used by developers and customers (including critical services such as Chainlink VRF).\n* Improve the reliability and observability of our internal infrastructure. \n* Provide our engineers with a reliable release pipeline and empower them to release and deploy Chainlink and adjacent tools extremely quickly.\n\n**Requirements**\n\n* 5+ years of relevant professional experience. You have a software engineering background or an operations background and have worked as an SRE (or in a very close position) before.\n* Experience with system architecture. You can create a design document for a cross-region load-balancing app with five microservices, a PostgreSQL cluster, a caching layer, and a Kafka queueโ€”and then implement it on AWS.\n* Experience with CI/CD pipelines. You can troubleshoot an existing pipeline or build your own, and you've probably worked on both software delivery and cloud-based services deployment.\n* Experience with distributed systems and container orchestration.
