LoanCrate is hiring a
Remote Senior Software Engineer

What is LoanCrate?

We started LoanCrate to make home-buying simpler and less expensive for lenders and borrowers (us!). Today, mortgage lenders are stuck running their companies on software products built 20 years ago. These products are slow and unstable, and end up costing lenders millions of dollars in other otherwise preventable mistakes every year. LoanCrate solves those problems and more, helping lenders improve the home-buying experience for people all over the country.

Since starting in January 2021, our remote team has raised $9m, grown to 13 people, and launched our first product. And since adopting LoanCrate in June '21, our customers have used LoanCrate to power >$42b in new home loans. As a company, we're on track to be cash-flow positive in 2023.

Our team is a group of people excited to tackle the complexity of the home-lending industry. We care about collaboration, very open communication covering the good & the bad so that we learn from our decisions quickly, and ultimately having fun while we're building. You'll fit in well if you like diving deep quickly!

The opportunity

Our dreams are big and we have much to build! We're looking for senior software engineers to help lead our team in powering the future of home buying in the US (which could entail managing a majority of US home loans every year โ€” financial assets worth trillions of dollars).

We are excited to offer competitive salary and equity for this role.

What to expect

As an engineer at LoanCrate, you'll continue our team tradition by shipping code to production on your first day! Following that, within your first month, you'll dive into your first mission-critical project, such as...

๐Ÿ™ˆ Architecting, building, and launching v2 of our no-code platform that our customers use to digitize their ops workflows and save millions of dollars per year.

๐Ÿค Integrating with 3rd-party providers of lending services APIs to generate documents/disclosures, produce automated underwriting results, or prevent fraud.

๐Ÿ— Architecting, building, and launching the next generation of our job processing infrastructure on AWS to make LoanCrate's back end more observable and reliable.

Tech stack

Nearly all of our code is written in TypeScript. We use React on the frontend, Node/Express on the backend (running inside Docker), GraphQL/Apollo on both sides, and Postgres as our database. We use AWS (ECS, RDS, ElastiCache, SNS, and more) and manage all of our infrastructure with Terraform.

We believe that high engineering velocity drives high product velocity (and, in turn, our success as a company ๐Ÿ˜„). Keeping this in mind, we've invested heavily in creating a great developer experience that enables engineers to ship fast. Some highlights of our stack:

โ†”๏ธ End-to-End Type Safety - We generate TypeScript types from our Postgres and GraphQL schemas so that when we change our database schema we see type errors in any incompatible frontend React components.

๐ŸŒŽ Full-Stack Code Sharing - Our build tooling supports seamless sharing of TypeScript files between the client, server, and other packages in our mono-repo so that we never have to define functions or configuration values twice.

๐Ÿ  Reproducible Infrastructure - Weโ€™ve used Terraform to manage 100% of our infrastructure since day 1 and have configured our CI pipeline to automatically deploy temporary staging environments for every pull request. We use these per-PR environments to get feedback from teammates and test any infrastructure changes using infrastructure that's identical to production.

๐Ÿงช First Class Testing Utilities - We have a comprehensive library of utilities that mock production-like data and feed automated end-to-end, integration, and performance tests. Our wide-ranging test suite allows us to move fast while maintaining nearly perfect uptime.

Preferred skills and background
(It's okay not to have all of these things - these are just some skills we are excited about!)

๐Ÿ”’ A constant and keen eye for security risks โ€” we store and display some of people's most sensitive personal data and need to keep it safe!

๐ŸŽจ A desire to be product-oriented, from thinking through the product implications of what you're building to contributing your unique ideas of how to improve the product.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Ability to develop readable, maintainable, and effective software architecture patterns that support use of our product by various enterprise customers (each with thousands of employees and their own methods for running their companies).

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ Excitement to mentor less senior engineers in both hard and soft skills.

๐Ÿšˆ SRE-oriented mindset for developing infrastructure that's reliable, observable, and requires minimal toil to maintain.

๐ŸŒฉ๏ธ Experience scaling high-throughput distributed systems in the cloud. Bonus points if you're experienced with infrastructure-as-code solutions like Terraform or CloudFormation!

๐Ÿ”ง Ability to develop full-stack web app features from design through deployment.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Experience designing and scaling complex relational DB schemas, as well as figuring out performant ways to store, retrieve, and update such data. Home loans have thousands of data fields ๐Ÿ™ƒ.
Please mention the word PRECISE when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMy4yMzguMjUzLjE2Mw==). This is a feature to avoid fake spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and instantly see they're human.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!

Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. \n\nABOUT US:\n\nBraintrust is the only network that gives in-demand talent all the freedom of freelance with all the benefits, community and stability of a full-time role. As the first decentralized talent network, our revolutionary Web3 model ensures the community that relies on Braintrust to find work are the same people who own and build it through the blockchain token, BTRST. So unlike other marketplaces that take 20% to 50% of talent earnings, Braintrust allows talent to keep 100% of earnings and to vote on key changes to improve the network. But now knowing Switchboard's there, an external source monitoring things, I'm ready to go" - Switchboard customer\n\n \n\nWeโ€™re building meaningful software, and that gets us excited. Non-technical teams are using tools like Airtable, Zapier, Integromat and Tray to eliminate manual work and turn their teams into automated powerhouses. One of the biggest things holding them back is being able to rely on these no-code tools for critical infrastructure. Thatโ€™s what weโ€™re working on. \n\n \n\nWeโ€™ve built the first error monitoring solution for no-code - letting users of Zapier and Integromat know when thereโ€™s an issue with their business-critical automations. We help teams collaborate on a fix the same way Pagerduty has helped address downtime in dev teams - assigning incidents, resolving problems, and documenting how future errors get fixed.\n\n \n\nBut error monitoring is just the first step. How do we bring the full suite of dev ops principles to no-code?\n \nTHE TEAM\n\nOur engineering team is the perfect mix of curious developers and no-code pioneers. Weโ€™re remote-first, with offices in Atlanta and San Francisco. Most of us enjoy traveling, and we get together in-person in fun places for our company off-sites at least twice a year. We offer a generous stipend to get the office of your dreams set up in your house, and will pay for a co-working space in your area if youโ€™d like. Weโ€™ve got great benefits packages, no-questions asked vacation policies, and donโ€™t ignore HR like many startups do. \n\n \n\nWe care about each other and value the different perspectives all of us bring. Sibiย (pronounced: see-bee) is modernizing the antiquated procurement industry. We are simplifying the process of building and improving a property by connecting manufacturers, contractors, and homeowners directly on one platform.

At Sibi, we strive for a culture where teamwork is the epicenter of everything we do because innovation is dependent on diverse perspectives. As a company that ships software in an ever-evolving industry, we favor "shipped" over "perfect," betting on incremental delivery without sacrificing quality. We move fast, with confidence, at a sustainable pace.

At this time, Sibi is only considering applicants who currently reside in the US.

About you

The ideal candidate values collaboration over solo effort. We plan ahead, outlining high-level tasks & objectives, and often pair program.

We are looking for someone with strong JavaScript fundamentals with experience shipping software in React and the Node.js ecosystem. Bonus for experience in GraphQL, TypeScript, and a love for 90's hip-hop.

What you'll do

  • Work on a team responsible for a slice of our domain.
  • Build & maintain features ranging from UI components to GraphQL resolvers & database models.
  • Focus on measurable outcomes over output.
  • Responsible for monitors, alerts & analytics of services under your domain.
  • Mentor, collaborate and help your teammates grow.

The Tools

We currently leverage many new tools across our platform, such as Linear, GitHub Actions, Slack, and a range of AWS infrastructure tools. We also rely on the tried and true solutions: Node.js, Postgres, and Redis.

Our tech stack includes:

  • Next.js
  • Storybook
  • Stitches
  • GraphQL with Apollo
  • Node.js
  • Postgres

See ourย Stackshareย for a detailed overview of our stack.

Benefits

  • In-person or virtual optionality (based in the Phoenix office)
  • Health insurance with employer contribution
  • Dental, vision, and other ancillary benefit plans
  • FSA & HSA options
  • Flexible paid time off
  • 401(k) plan (company matching)
  • Learning Budget
  • Free Sibi swag
  • Daily lunch provided for in-office crews
  • Stocked beverage fridges, coffee & snacks galore

Our Interview Process

We don't do whiteboard interviews. We optimize our process around you and real-world problems, not algorithms on a whiteboard.

Our process starts with an initial call with a senior member of our engineering team. This is mainly a screening interview where we get to know you and tell you about the company, team, and specific role.

The second stage is a technical interview. We will build a feature or fix a bug together on our actual codebase because we'd like you to know what you're getting into.

Our third and final step is an in-office or video call so you can meet with a number of our team members. We want to give you a firsthand look at the life and culture of Sibi.

Please mention the word SHIMMERING when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMy4yMzguMjUzLjE2Mw==). This is a feature to avoid fake spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and instantly see they're human.
