\nHello!\n\nThanks for checking out our job description for a remote Engineering Manager / Leadat Impala. We felt a little bit impersonal just just diving straight in with words like “revolutionising” and “disrupting”.\n\nAs such, we apologise in advance for any clichés, tropes or sudden-insecurity-driven-panic-attacks that you might find in the description below.\n\nWhat is Impala?\n\nImpala is making the process of booking hotel rooms ridiculously easy. We’re providing hotels with a powerful data distribution infrastructure that transforms the way hotel guests across the world browse, book, stay and pay. Think Twilio for Travel.\n\nWe launched our original API product in January 2019 and since then have grown at - quite frankly - a ridiculous old clip. Our technology is already installed in hundreds of hotels worldwide, on six continents and categorises more than 1 billion data points. This has allowed us to bring forward our ambition to revolutionise the hotel distribution market and help empower millions of people across the globe.\n\nWe are a growing remote-first team of exceptional people split across engineering, product and commercial who make up a thriving, active, supportive community.\n\nWhere is Impala going?\n\nWe’re supported by some of the most respected investors in the business, the early-stage backers behind Deliveroo, PillPack, SecretEscapes, Zoopla, Trivago, Monzo, Travelperk, Transferwise, Airbnb, GetYourGuide, Omio, Spotify and more! \n\nThey’re on board because of the shared opportunity we have before us - revolutionising a 1.6 trillion dollar market that’s been out-of-date for 20 years.\n\nThey also share our vision of a future in which travel is seamlessly connected and relentlessly inventive.\n\nOur vision is that within the next two years 10% of hotel bookings worldwide will flow through Impala technology, and the product that we’re building will support the entire ecosystem of travel technology (we already have over a thousand companies signed up).\n\nAnyone travelling anywhere will interact with products powered by Impala and to achieve this we’re growing the team extensively within the next year. Now is the most exciting time to be joining Impala as we go through a large push to grow and scale, both as a service and a community!\n\nA brief overview of what you will be doing here:\n\n\n* As engineering manager and team lead, you will be accountable for the effectiveness of your team and personal development of the developers. \n\n* You will be technical and hands-on, a key technology leader in team. You will share responsibility for the security, reliability and quality of a set of services. \n\n* You will ideate, develop and iterate new features alongside a product manager, enabling our technology partners to add value to hotels and travellers \n\n* You will work directly with internal stakeholders; part and parcel of working in an autonomous, metric-driven development team\n\n\n\n\nYou should join us if:\n\n\n* You have experience leading a development team, and managing or mentoring others \n\n* You feel comfortable working closely with product owners, designers and other stakeholders\n\n* You are extremely collaborative, Impala’s engineering team is not political, everyone has great ideas and should be open to input. We have no space for brilliant jerks. \n\n* You are passionate about customer experience and building high-quality maintainable software that looks and works fantastically.\n\n\n\n\nWhere will you work?\n\nThis is a remote position. This means you can work from anywhere +/- 2 Hours of London timezone (and less than a 3 hour flight).\n\nWe are a remote-first company, with a fully distributed engineering team! This was a very deliberate, natural choice, as we prioritise preserving work-life balance and accommodating the best people in Europe, while also fostering diversity.\n\nWe have loads of remote initiatives to ensure every new member of the team is fully set up!\n\n\n* We provide an additional generous Personalised Workspace Budget for things like monitors, keyboards, desk chairs and headphones.\n\n* We offer an office stipend - you can furnish their home office with a generous £150 monthly stipend (coffee, snacks, wifi bills, cleaning, desk equipment, plus anything in between) or we will pay for a co-working membership near where you live.\n\n* The full engineering team travels once a quarter to meet and socialise with the rest of the engineering team somewhere in Europe.\n\n* We offer a generous Social Budget for you to travel to London-based social events.\n\n* We have a dedicated Remote Experience Manager in the team, whose role is, among other things, to ensure everyone in the team’s happiness, and help them feel integrated and empowered while working remotely.\n\n* We give each new team member a brand new high-spec laptop when they start, with a choice between a Thinkpad or Mac.\n\n\n\n\nPlease note, we only accept candidates in Western Europe because of timezone and travel time differences. We make no exceptions (we don’t have time to, unfortunately!). \n\nWhat you will get in return?\n\n\n* \n\n\n* We reward Impalans with the most competitive salaries and regular reviews. Whether you're an individual contributor or you want to manage people, there are plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and boost your earning potential. We offer 3.5x the average annual UK raise, even if you remain within the same role.\n\n* We’re in the top 14% of companies in the UK for the amount of holiday that we offer, at 36 days.\n\n* One Unsick day off per year, to keep up with proactive health admin - so you can finally sort that trip to the dentist and get those health screens that you never have time to do.\n\n* Flexible working options. With extended lunch break options, Recess Hour, and loads more.\n\n* We invest in your development with a generous £1,000 Professional Development budget per year, and we will support you to realise your potential. \n\n* Fun and inclusive monthly social events, from go-karting to mini golf to karaoke to virtual pub quiz.\n\n* Access to Perkbox. \n\n* A super strong and proactive focus on mental and physical wellbeing. From Vitality health insurance, to Sanctus, to a monthly gym membership reimbursement, plus heaps more.\n\n* A generous Loved Ones Budget - £750 annually to get your friends & family over to visit you once a year, no matter how near or far from home you are based. (Engineering only)\n\n* Weekly 10% Time. (Engineering only)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSound interesting? \n\nIf your answer is ‘yes’ and you are really excited to learn more then please check out our Medium page which includes more information about who we are, what we do, what matters to us and our culture.\n\nWant to know more about our CEO, or want a deeper understanding of our what and why? \nWe are looking for an engineer with a “find a way or make a way” attitude that is excited to join a small but growing team that has more projects than developers.  This opportunity is for someone excited for autonomy, ownership, and breadth of responsibility.\n\nOur environment is typical of a start-up:\n\n\n* We work in small teams, fast-paced, we all get a lot done by everyone wearing many hats.\n\n* We are serious about optimizing our time and staying focused on the most important goals and outcomes.\n\n* We are a remote team and are completely on board with 100% remote work, meaning we focus on over-communication to ensure we can stay in sync despite our physical distance.\n\n* We coordinate using a kanban board, hold a daily standup, and mostly communicate via ad hoc video calls and Slack.\n\n* We’re building lots of new things, but also maintaining a significant business.  We are mindful of the balance and need to monitor and pay down tech debt and also innovate with exciting greenfield projects.\n\n\n\n\nTech stack.\n\n\n* Our retail application is a frontend-heavy PWA written in NodeJS and React, containerized via Docker, and Deployed via Kubernetes. We also make heavy use of Parse Server, which provides an API to the MongoDB via REST and GraphQL endpoints.\n\n\n\n\nBuild something challenging.\n\nThis isn't just another CRUD application. Your challenge will be to deliver a highly-available service with complex business logic being used by hundreds of businesses 24/7 to keep their operations running.  Our entity model is vast and a major part of our domain is synchronizing data with third party traceability systems. Explore the limits of your resourcefulness by designing human and automated systems that deliver consistent performance, reliability and scale whilst working with less-than-ideal third-party requirements and systems.\n\nSee if you fit our requirements.\n\nFor this role, we are looking for someone with the following characteristics:\n\n\n* 5-10 years experience working in back-end applications\n\n* 5-10 years experience working with front-end applications\n\n* Deep Familiarity with Node JS and Express\n\n* Familiarity with GraphQL\n\n* Familiarity with Docker and containerized orchestration in a cloud environment. Bonus for experience with Kubernetes and Google Cloud (Google Kubernetes Engine). \n\n* Familiarity with PWA best practices\n\n* Familiarity with ES6 & ReactJS\n\n* Bonus for experience working in a fast paced / high-expectations startup environment\n\n* Ability to acutely focus on company objectives and mission at hand.\n\n* Proven dedication to creating maintainable, functional, and reliable systems.\n\n* Ability to pass a background check; have appropriate work authorization\n\n* Extremely articulate communicator in all virtual mediums.\n\n* An eye for design, detail, and user experience\n\n* Familiarity with GIT branching models, CI pipelines, and related workflows.\n\n\n\n\nYour Mission & Responsibilities:\n\n\n* Architect, plan and build new features, ranging from discussing wireframes to creating the data model to architecting deployment processes.\n\n* Contribute to maintaining and building out robustness of our Core implementation.\n\n* Contribute to our engineering culture by designing and developing with intention as well as our focus on continuous improvement.\n\n* Advise, mentor and lead other full time engineers and contractors on projects, small to large, from start to finish.\n\n* Technical Planning (Spec writing etc.)\n\n* Technical Estimation & Delegation\n\n* Team Evaluation / Process (Retros, grooming, velocity management etc.)\n\n* Implementing company technical initiatives (Jira, GQL, Apollo, Sentry error policies)\n\n* Accountability for team & product performance\n\n* Contributing to technical & product direction\n\n* Ensuring high availability of retail services for our customers\n\n* Assist with deployments and infrastructure architecture/orchestration.\n\n\n\n\n\nTo achieve our mission, we always look for high-caliber people who share our core values:\n\n\n* Value-Driven: Above all else, we are concerned with driving value to customers and partners through over-delivering on the benefits we’ve promised them. \n\n\n\n* Grit: We are resilient marathoners who finish what they start and love tackling problems of all sizes. We take critical feedback and push through to get the job done. \n\n\n\n* Rigor: We are data driven, analytical and exhaustive in decision making. We take in the evidence, integrate information from multiple sources quickly, draw conclusions and take actions - quickly.\n\n\n\n* Collaboration: We leave our egos at home, we challenge each other and we work together to find the best solutions, every day, day in and day out. \n\n\n\n* Accountability: We sign up for the hard stuff and take ownership to see it through. We make lemonade out of lemons when we have to and don’t let attitude get in the way of getting it done.\n\n\n\n* Curiosity:  Most of us dork out over non-work related topics at a ridiculous level of detail, because that’s how we’re wired. We’re naturally inquisitive, ask tough questions and aren’t afraid to ruffle feathers to find better answers. \n\n\n\n* Honesty: We’re transparent and honest because that’s the right way to treat other people. \nHello!\n\nThanks for checking out our job description for a remote Engineering Manager / Leadat Impala. We felt a little bit impersonal just just diving straight in with words like “revolutionising” and “disrupting”.\n\nAs such, we apologise in advance for any clichés, tropes or sudden-insecurity-driven-panic-attacks that you might find in the description below.\n\n\nWhat is Impala?\n\nImpala is making the process of booking hotel rooms ridiculously easy. This has allowed us to bring forward our ambition to revolutionise the hotel distribution market and help empower millions of people across the globe.\n\nWe are a growing remote-first team of exceptional people split across engineering, product and commercial who make up a thriving, active, supportive community.\n\n\nWhere is Impala going?\n\nWe’re supported by some of the most respected investors in the business, the early-stage backers behind Deliveroo, PillPack, SecretEscapes, Zoopla, Trivago, Monzo, Travelperk, Transferwise, Airbnb, GetYourGuide, Omio, Spotify and more! Now is the most exciting time to be joining Impala as we go through a large push to grow and scale, both as a service and a community!\n\n\nA brief overview of what you will be doing here:\n\n\n* As engineering manager and team lead, you will be accountable for the effectiveness of your team and personal development of the developers. \n\n* You will be technical and hands-on, a key technology leader in team. You will share responsibility for the security, reliability and quality of a set of services. \n\n* You will ideate, develop and iterate new features alongside a product manager, enabling our technology partners to add value to hotels and travellers \n\n* You will work directly with internal stakeholders; part and parcel of working in an autonomous, metric-driven development team\n\n\n\n\n\nYou should join us if:\n\n\n* You have experience leading a development team, and managing or mentoring others \n\n* You feel comfortable working closely with product owners, designers and other stakeholders\n\n* You are extremely collaborative, Impala’s engineering team is not political, everyone has great ideas and should be open to input. We have no space for brilliant jerks. \n\n* You are passionate about customer experience and building high-quality maintainable software that looks and works fantastically.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere will you work?\n\nThis is a remote position. \n\n\n\nWhat you will get in return?\n\n\n* \n\n\n* We reward Impalans with the most competitive salaries and regular reviews. (Engineering only)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSound interesting? \n\nIf your answer is ‘yes’ and you are really excited to learn more then please check out our Medium page which includes more information about who we are, what we do, what matters to us and our culture.\n\nWant to know more about our CEO, or want a deeper understanding of our what and why?
