This job post is closed and the position is probably filled. Please do not apply. Work for AgSquared and want to re-open this job? Use the edit link in the email when you posted the job!
About the job:
Come help us lay the foundation for the future of agriculture! We are a team of innovators who have been at the forefront of empowering farms to use their data to become more productive and more sustainable for nearly 15 years. At AgSquared you will have the unique opportunity to help build a suite of products that is truly impactful on a global scale, while working with a fantastic team of talented, down-to-earth people who love their work and love working together.
What we do:
At AgSquared, our mission is to help farms become more sustainable and adopt a greater level of transparency without sacrificing the productivity and profitability that allows them to stay in business. We accomplish this by outfitting farms with a technology stack that allows them to gather data from the field, process it, and move it into the hands of those who need it, ultimately allowing them to evolve into more modern, data-driven businesses.
Our background is in agriculture, and it shows. Our company was founded by two vegetable breeders, and this uniquely positions us to understand how to create software that will actually get used and actually have an impact. We focus relentlessly on making the day-to-day experiences of farm workers more enjoyable and friction-free by providing them with mobile tools to help them do their jobs better. Farm owners love us because their employees love us.ย
What you will do:
We are looking for an experienced full-stack developer to join our engineering team. Your primary role will be to expand our suite of ETL processes that convert raw data into processed forms that serve a wide variety of analytical purposes.
Our platformโs primary data architecture is structured to offer a high level of flexibility and configurability in the data collection process, so that each customer can fine-tune our mobile app to best fit into the way they run their farm, but this typically means that conducting analyses on raw data is relatively inefficient. As our platform has evolved and customers are relying on us to process increasingly large data sets for increasingly complex analyses, we have found that adding an ETL layer to extract and process the raw data into more usable forms gives us the best of both worlds โ we can offer the most flexible experience to field-based farm workers while being able to produce analyses of the collected data for decision-makers efficiently and on demand.
Until now we have been building these ETL processes on an as-needed basis, but we are ready to make this approach a more permanent and expansive feature of our platform. That is where you come in โ we are looking for someone to lead the effort to build out our ETL environment. In this role you will work closely with our companyโs CTO, the product owner, and the BI lead. You will make high-level strategic choices about how our ETL environment will be structured and how it will interface with the other components of our platform, and then you will take the lead in building it out.
AgSquared is a small, close-knit team, and so everyone here wears multiple hats. While your primary responsibility will be the development of our ETL environment, you will also have the opportunity to work on a wide range of different projects in our mobile app, APIs, backend, dashboarding platform, etc. Come prepared to expand your horizons and try lots of new things!
What you bring:
Necessary qualifications:
The core competencies and qualifications weโre looking for include:
10+ years of experience in designing and development of web and mobile applications, with heavy use of JavaScript frameworks, REST APIs and SQL
Ability to work independently, while retaining the ability to ask questions about proper architecture and domain knowledge
Deep understanding of enterprise architecture and patterns. Experience architecting ETL or similar processes
Experience with SQL and stored procedures
Experience with NoSQL databases
Experience with PHP 5.x
Experience with Ember/React/Angular javascript framework
Experience with Subversion
Experience with ES6
Experience with REST
Experience with SASS
Experience with Responsive Design
Experience with Linux management
Experience with remote working
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Nice-to-Have (Not Required)
Experience with D3 or similar data visualization technologies
Experience with data sciences
Experience with Klipfolio
Experience with CSS animations
Experience with Cordova
Experience with Symfony
Experience with Puppet
We donโt expect you to know anything about farming, but if you do thatโs a plus!
What we offer:
AgSquared is an awesome place to work! We have been a fully-remote team since our company was founded in 2009, and we truly understand what it takes to run a remote workplace where people feel connected, empowered, supported, and set up for success. Some specific benefits include:
Work from wherever you want - As long as you have a stable internet connection and can overlap a portion of your work day with U.S. east coast hours, you can be anywhere in the world youโd like to be.
Excellent work-life balance - Work-from-home can become work-all-the-time without proper boundaries. At AgSquared, we have spent nearly 15 years fine-tuning how we help our team members thrive, both professionally and in life, while working remotely. We offer very generous paid-time-off and parental leave policies. We also encourage you to not only take vacations, but to also carve out the time on a day-to-day basis to spend time with the people who are around you. Itโs important that you take the time to go to your childโs school play or to have lunch with your mom, to walk your dog or have coffee with a friend โ remote work makes these things possible, and you will feel supported and encouraged at AgSquared to have that life outside of work.
Career development โ We encourage our team members to try new things and develop new skills during their time at AgSquared. We are a close-knit team - you will be in the loop on what everyone else is doing, and there will be plenty of opportunities to join your teammates on projects that help you develop new skills.
Opportunity to work with world-class specialists โ AgSquared doesnโt look like your typical tech company โ our average team member has 18 years of experience working in agriculture! If you are interested in creating technology for farms, there is no better place to start that journey.

๐ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!
When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to pay to buy equipment which they then pay you back for later. Also never pay for trainings you have to do. Those are scams! NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! Posts that link to pages with "how to work online" are also scams. Don't use them or pay for them. Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. **The salary range is so wide because** I would like some of the compensation to be variable or performance based (such as bonuses when new apps and or meaningful features are launched). I know money is the most important thing to you. It is for me too. I am prepared to pay the right person a lot of money, especially for a remote job. This is up to you and I to discuss. If you want equity I am willing to do that after a standard vesting cliff period. In fact I would love if you really wanted equity and were that type of person -- one that cared about the long-term.\n\nSaga Ventures is hiring for the role of CTO/Tech Lead. Weโll give you any title you want if you get things done. \n\nAs CTO/Tech Lead you will be responsible for the oversight of, the hiring process of and the development of multiple web and mobile applications. \n\nSaga Ventures is a startup based in Switzerland that builds products that solve its founderโs problems. Basically the founder is solving his own problems with software. The founder is technical but has too many ideas and wants to implement more than one idea at a time. Your job is to lead the development of these software projects. Whether that is outsourcing hiring on freelance websites or hiring full time employees, thatโs your choice (almost entirely; I may push back on a decision to see how well youโve thought it out or something like that).\n\nTop 5 reasons to work with Saga Ventures.\n\nThe person you report to (me, the guy writing this) wants as minimal contact as possible. This means you will be working autonomously almost the entire time. You will be asked to give a weekly report of the progress made each week on each application. This is how I will judge your performance. I will track budgeting with you. We may need to have calls, especially at the beginning of the job, but I generally do not like having calls. I am not one of those bosses who insists on doing things for the sake of doing them.\n\nThis is not a role where you will learn from others, technically speaking. You should be confident and familiar with all aspects of web and mobile application development (React Native specific). You should be comfortable with and desire to work independently.\n\nThe ideas and applications we are working on are not pie in the sky ideas. They are all intended to solve current problems of the founder. For some of the ideas, competing applications exist. For others, the problems we will be working on are not currently realized by the public. They are new. One example problem is how to easily share only the code that a remote developer needs to work on a repository of code.\n\nTwo of the five ideas have partially developed apps. They need love and attention from someone focused.\n\nThe themes of the products are:\n\nRemote Work\nInvesting and Finance\nLanguage Learning\nLongevity/Anti-aging\n\nAll of the above themes are passions of his and industries he is highly experienced in (except longevity, that is a mere passion with a missing website ;).\n\nThings I Care About\n\nYour ability to work independently on full feature sets bringing product specifications to life.\nYou should basically never ask me a technical question. I am trying to not code at all here. I do product, design, strategy, finance, business stuff. You do and lead everything else.\nBe able to take ownership of problems with a determination to solve them (this sentence was from a boilerplate job description from another one that I copied but it sounded good.\n\nThings I donโt care about:\n\nAgile development or any other development styles and how you get things built. [I may steer you towards certain development approaches though (such as using the same tech stack and directory structure across apps to maximize development efficiency)].\nWhere you live\nWhen you work on a daily basis. If we donโt have to speak with one another, we donโt. It would be great if we could be a text-only company. Automattic is. Why canโt Saga Ventures be?\n\n\nSkills required:\n\nReact/React-Native/React-Native-Web for frontend\nExperience leading development projects or the confidence and ability to do so\nWould be nice if you had a good understanding of AWS with some devops experience\n\nAs CTO/Tech Lead you must be highly proficient in React Native. We share as much code as possible between mobile and web applications by using the React Native Web package.\n\nOur backend is the classic Express, MongoDB/Mongoose. \n\nPlease mention the words **MOVIE STONE FAITH** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMy4xNDUuMTU4LjIz). \nWork Location\n\nHome Office or any SUSE Location near the CET Timezone\n\n\nOur Product \n\nAt this position you will work on the Open Build Service (OBS). A Linux release engineering platform to collaborate on building and distributing software. The OBS helps SUSE to ship software to its customers. For a wide range of operating systems and hardware architectures.\n\n\nOur Team \n\nWe are a team of Web Developers spread all over Europe. Most of us work from home, a few of us you find in the SUSE headquarter in Nuremberg/Germany. All of us focus on the full stack that makes up our application. From UI/UX design using HTML/CSS/Javascript, over Creating Business Logic with Ruby on Rails to Data Modeling on our SQL database. We also practice the DevOps culture and Operate & Observe our code in production environments. This means each and every one of us takes care of the complete life cycle of the code we produce. We conceive, write, test, instrument, deploy, roll back and debug our code! We also believe in the agile principles and organize our work together in the SCRUM framework. https://openbuildservice.org/bs-team\n\nThis position will report to the Engineering Manager of the team, Hendrik Vogelsang.\n\n\nOur Values \n\nHere is what we identify as our team culture and how those attitudes translate into our daily practices. We are looking for people whose personal values have some overlap with ours. We value: Customers. By understanding peoples’ goals, needs and their limitations. Everything we build and change, everything we do, we do for the people using our product. Diversity, pluralism and freedom of choice. We think differences, not uniformity, in origin, circumstance and experience make people, the practice of software development and in the end, our product interesting. We believe it takes a diverse set of people to produce a product truly useful for everyone. Ownership. Instead of hiding behind processes, or driving relentlessly towards individual goals, we take ownership of the entire situation. We do that when things go smooth but also when things go wrong. No matter if they were in, or out of our control. No matter if that hurts and bruises our ego. It was never anyone else’s fault, it was ours. We believe ownership is how we respect others. Collaboration. By working toward shared goals, in a horizontal structure with flexible leadership. We do not only share results with each other, but how we got there. We constantly reflect our behavior and how it brings everyone else forward with us. We win together, we lose together. Quality. By taking due time, avoiding shortcuts, pacing ourselves. By being critical of what we do and by welcoming critique from others. We always leave our code base, processes and team better than we have found it. Community. By curiously exploring what other people inside and outside this industry think, do and produce. We expose ourselves to all kinds of ideas and openly share our own views. We strive for personal growth by continuously learning about other people, technology, development methodologies and efforts. We are open minded, always evolving adventurers\n\n\nPerks \n\nApart from the usual benefits of working for an established software engineering enterprise (competitive pay, rewards, established career ladder etc.) we can make the following happening for you. We are all about a healthy work life balance. You join a company that’s still growing fast and yet is over a quarter century old. We didn’t get here by burning out people. At SUSE we believe that without time off from work, a person becomes both bored and boring. That is why we provide flexible working hours, a flexible vacation policy and access to professional life & career coaching. We’ll give our best to help you maximize your well-being, because we are in it for the long run. We are all about creating opportunities for personal growth. You will have a personal budget for autonomous learning (O’Reilly/Linkedin Learning etc.) and for visiting industry events. The team spends every other Friday afternoon together sharing what they got inspired by. We frequently practice pair programming and kick off projects in mob programming. Every week you will have the opportunity to attend exciting lunch & learn sessions by SUSE industry experts. We also run company wide hackathons (Hack Week) multiple times a year where you are free to work on any activity of your passion for a week! We want you to become a better engineer. We are all about hacker culture following the community best practices. Most things you do for SUSE will be open source. We expect you to contribute back upstream. We encourage you to openly share your own views with the global Free Software community. That means you can spend the majority of your work time on your public track record. Your public code and collaboration will be your next resume!\n\n\nYour Responsibilities \n\nWe are looking for someone with strong Ruby on Rails experience. You should also be well-versed in HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Experience with site reliability is a plus but not a requirement. We require a strong proficiency in English (spoken and written) and the ability to convey what you want to other people. You might have a computer science degree, you might not have any formal education like that. That is not what we are looking for. You might have spend 20 years in our industry or 2. That is not what matters to us. We care about what you can do and how you do it, not about how you got here.\n\nHere is what the team does day in day out:\n\n\nPublic Open Source Software Development \n\nAs the Open Build Service is a Free Software project, you ideally have a background in this development method.\n\n• Implementing features/bug fixes for the product • Improve quality and lower technical debt of the product\n\n• Review and evaluate code/issue submissions from other developers and customers\n\n• Cooperate with the team and other stakeholders to align plans in an agile fashion\n\n• Document features, workflows and concepts\n\n\nSite Reliability Engineering\n\nAs we are practicing the DevOPS culture, you ideally know how to do\n\n• Continuous integration of the product with other software in the stack\n\n• Continuous deployment\n\n• Monitoring the health and performance of deployments\n\n• Incident management\n\n• Infrastructure management \n\n#Salary and compensation\n
