To continue our growth we’re seeking a Senior Backend Engineer located in London or Auckland. With your strong production experience of Python and ETL processes, you’ll play a key role in our data extraction, transformation pipelines, data storage (MongoDB), and data delivery via AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL). You’ll need a deep understanding and experience with serverless AWS (Lamba with EventBridge), and knowledge of the serverless framework (https://www.serverless.com/) would be a significant benefit.

This role is development focused, with a small amount of coaching required for junior team members.

How We Work at Basket

At Basket, we work in 2 week development cycles with a clearly defined goal. We’re inspired by companies like Linear where quality work is more important than quantity of features released. We plan each cycle well ahead of time with team discussions, research and workshops to make sure we’re making informed decisions.

Here’s how our typical cycle looks;

• 2 weeks before a cycle we plan and define requirements for features

• 1 week before a cycle we do technical due diligence and write acceptance criteria

• During a cycle we write code using test-driven development, test code to development and staging environments, collaborate with QA, Design and PM team members to ensure features are production ready.

What You'll Do

• Write, improve and maintain serverless functions to accurately transform and load data into efficient and organised MongoDB storage

• Develop and maintain 3rd party data clients to enrich stored data

• Create and update API endpoints for a frontend client using AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL)

• Analyse and tune application performance with a focus on efficiency using analytics tools such as Lumigo, Sentry, Segment and DataDog

• Research and architect solutions using serverless architecture patterns

• Implement and improve analytics and application monitoring performance

• Approach your work using test driven development (TDD) to ensure the integrity of your code and our services

About You

• Native English (this is essential)

• Located in London, UK or Auckland, NZ

• 5+ years full-time work experience as a backend engineer on production services

• Advanced knowledge of Python ^3.10 and/or NodeJS ^15.0.0

• Deep knowledge of webpage parsing, including XPath and Regex

• Excellent experience with MongoDB and DynamoDB

• Production experience with AWS services in a serverless microservices context, such as Lambda, AppSync, API Gateway, S3, SNS, SQS, Cognito, EventBridge

• Lots of energy and enthusiasm about being part of a small, progressive team

Good To Have

• University degree in computer science, or equivalent experience

• Experience working in a VC-backed startup environment

We’re looking for seasoned Senior and Lead Ruby on Rails Engineers to join our fully-remote team to help us scale to meet market demand. This is an opportunity to join on the ground floor of a bootstrapped, growing company with a lot of upside.

What we’d want you to do:

• Take technical ownership of our product’s architecture and capabilities
• Recommend and lead complex refactoring projects and migrations, without sacrificing stability, such as:
  • Modernizing our back-end stack (we’re currently on Rails 4)
  • Optimizing our API and PostgreSQL database for scale and performance
• Suggest and implement scalability & productivity improvements
• Collaborate with the rest of the team in weekly meetings, chat and code reviews
• Develop new full-stack features from start to finish using the Shape Up method
• Participate in our Betting Table planning meetings
• Write high-quality and maintainable Ruby and Typescript code
• Write high-quality documentation on our product’s architecture to assist collaboration

Qualifications

Must have

• 5+ years of experience with Ruby on Rails
• Fluent spoken and written English at a professional level.
• Working hours must overlap with PST for at least 3 hours.
• Familiarity with PostgreSQL query optimization and scaling strategies
• Past experience with complex upgrades and migrations
• Prior experience as a software architect or technical lead
• Strong analytical and debugging skills
• Strong communication skills, able to recommend decisions using data and experience

Nice to have

• Prior experience upgrading Ruby on Rails (this would be a big plus!)
• React, Typescript or GraphQL experience
• Elixir experience (we have 1 service using Elixir)

Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer/Team Lead who will manage a frontend team and contribute towards our efforts building, scaling, and evolving our constantly growing product and infrastructure. You will work closely with our business partners to deliver new features as a part of an autonomous cross-functional team.

You will embrace our DevOps team culture and champion owning your code across environments in our AWS cloud platform. Using an agile/kanban methodology, you will develop features alongside members of the team to ensure end-to-end performance for our users.  As a teammate, you will seek ways to improve the team’s delivery and quality on a daily basis.

Who you are:

• You are a senior software engineer with at least 3-5 years of experience building high-performance front-end experiences
• You are a strong communicator with a history of partnership with product management, designers, and developers to drive results for the organization
• Demonstrable proficiency writing single page applications with React or similar JS library/framework
• You have experience mentoring junior engineers
• You are comfortable taking initiative and making decisions
• You are interested in developing your leadership skills further
• You are proficient with CSS/CSS in JS and related tools
• Experience using and wiring up RESTful HTTP APIs
• You know and care about continuous delivery and automated testing
• Experience using webpack or similar build tools
• Experience using CI/CD software or services
• Authorized to work in the U.S. without restriction or sponsorship requirements
