At FetLife we're looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to help us better serve the community.
The Job
As a DevOps Engineer, you'll be working with the engineering team to monitor and improve our security, infrastructure, and performance.
You'll be responsible for:
Elevating our DevOps standards through improved monitoring, tooling, and processes
Planning and performing infrastructure improvements and maintenance
Monitoring and improving website stability and response times
Monitoring and improving email deliverability
Participating in the on-call rotation
Triaging, replicating, and fixing potential security issues
Maintaining high CI build success rates and low CI build run times
Currently, our entire platform is built as a majestic Rails monolith, using Vue.js with Typescript on the front-end.
More details about our tech stack:
Testing is done with RSpec & Capybara
Continuous integration and deployment are done with CircleCI
MySQL and PostgreSQL for our main databases
ScyllaDB for our activity feeds
Redis for session storage, queue management, and caching
ElasticSearch for full-text search
DevOps using Containers orchestrated with Kubernetes and Helm
Service and performance monitoring is done with DataDog and NewRelic
About You
We're looking for someone who has proven experience building and maintaining large production-level Ruby on Rails applications.
Ideally, you have experience:
Working with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Redis
Maintaining infrastructure with Docker, Kubernetes, and Google Cloud
Setting up and maintaining application and infrastructure monitoring
Managing database performance
Additionally, since we're 100% remote, we:
Highly value strong written communicators
Require at least a few hours of overlap from 8-12 AM EST (2-6 PM CET)

About The Role
Our infrastructure as code library and platform team delivers an end-to-end, best-practices infrastructure on AWS in just days, all as a product. In this role, youโll collaborate with other senior-level engineers to define the next generation of AWS and DevOps best practices, codify them for use by thousands of engineers, and design a next-level experience for implementing, operating and understanding them.
What You'll Work On
Build a better DevOps experience.ย We have a unique product that generates complete, multi-account AWS architectures for Terraform and Terragrunt in just a few hours using a collection of internal Golang tools. Help us take this to the next level by using that product to deliver prod architectures directly to customers, and then leveraging their feedback for improvements. Better yet, help us get to the point where the entire experience is completely automated or self-service.
Codify AWS and Terraform best practices.ย Customers look to Gruntwork to share the best way to launch on AWS. Discover AWS and Terraform best practices, and then codify them as repeatable patterns that Gruntwork customers can pull off the shelf.
Integrate with the Gruntwork platform.ย Integrate your product work with our company-wide platform, which consists of a REST API (Next.js/Typescript), a web-based single-page app (Next.js/React/Typescript, Tailwind), and a first-class CLI tool (Go).
Build out the Infrastructure as Code Library.ย Create and maintain reusable infrastructure modules for a variety of infrastructure (e.g., EKS, ECS, RDS, VPC, Lambda, EC2, S3, ElastiCache, etc.), using a variety of tools (e.g., Terraform, Go, Python, Bash, Docker, Packer, etc.) on AWS.

Compatible Time Zones
You'll be working with a team in theย US time zones, so you can be located in almost any country as long as your time zone is no further west than Los Angeles (GMT-8/GMT-7) and no further east than New York (GMT-5/GMT-4). Location Independent, Above-Market Salary.ย To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all salaries using formulas. The formula factors in your title and uses a multiplier to produce a result that's above market for that title. Our salaries are location independent.

This role involves both coaching/mentoring of other engineers as well as significant hands-on engineering. Strong test-driven development skills and incremental and rapid iteration in your development ethic is critical for this fast-moving and key initiative for Time Inc. Proven track-record of developing large-scale systems using service-oriented architecture and cloud technologies is a must as that will be part of your routine role. Our efforts will include both individual system development as well as assessment and integration of third-party software products. Knowledge and experience utilizing standardized APIs and specifications are preferred. Knowledge in the data space around data management, ingestion, and learning is a must.
