\nAbout Tinybird:\nAt Tinybird, we help developers and data teams take flight by unlocking the power of real-time data to quickly build data pipelines and innovative data products. With Tinybird, you can effortlessly ingest multiple data sources at scale, query and shape it using the 100% pure SQL you already know and love, and publish results as low-latency, high-concurrency APIs for your applications to chirp about. Developers can create fast APIs, fasterโwhat used to take hours and days now only takes minutes! Tinybird is the essential tool that data engineers and software developers have been waiting for enabling you to drive innovation with ease.\n\n\n\nWhat you will be doing: We are looking for someone to help us scale and to keep our software and infrastructure reliable and elastic as we scale. Someone who knows how to make hardware and software play together, and that participate as part of the oncall team, to understand not only our product, but also the issues our clients face.\n* โWe run our stack in Linux. We try to keep things simple. Technologies we use:\n* OpenResty: SSL termination and load balancing\n* Varnish: load balancing and, sometimes, caching\n* Redis: metadata store\n* Python: most of our backend uses Python except some small bits that rely on C++ for hot paths\n* ClickHouse: our main data store\n* Zookeeper: for ClickHouse replicas coordination\n* We use Grafana, Loki and Mimir for monitoring and alerting\n* Terraform: Cloud provisioning (virtual machines, networks, Kubernetes clusters)\n* Ansible: Deploys and software and config provisioning\n* Our number of machines is still manageable, but the number keeps growing as we keep adding customers. This is not about managing infrastructure but about making sure that our software uses the hardware resources wisely and flexibly. This means you will not only have to worry about automating machines, but about helping the product team to design and develop the architecture of the system as a whole. That will require you to work with our backend code and to understand how ClickHouse works.\n\n\n\n* Some challenges and things we want to improve:\n* High-availability and elasticity: as we keep adding customers, we need to architect our system to be more efficient and flexible\n* Observability: from specific resource usage to a bird's eye view of the whole platform. This requires good knowledge of storage, networking, and computing\n* Disaster recovery: improving our tooling to manage and discover problems, but also improving our on-call procedures\n* As a specific challenge: when our customers grow, we need to upgrade their accounts. Now, we do it manuallyโnot in the traditional sense of manual because we have tools that automate much of the process, but we need to take care of that one customer at a time: deciding what machines we need to spin-up, how much compute capacity we will provision, etc. Ideally, our architecture should allow our customers to upgrade themselves and assign more resources to them dynamically and seamlessly in the most dynamic, safe and transparent way possible.\n\n\n\nWhat you bring:\n* Experience designing, building and running distributed Cloud architectures and large scale web based applications. That is, in so many words, what you will be responsible for at Tinybird\n* Programming skills and willingness to dive into our codebase, ClickHouse source code, or any other software we use in order to figure out how things work. At Tinybird, we work mostly with Python and C++\n* Accountable and enthusiastic to take on the responsibility of designing and managing the platform, and an urge to take on things that may be broken. Unafraid to break stuff because you own it and can fix it if need be.\n* Bias for action, iteration and delivery. Conscious that often decisions can be reversed quickly and that speed is of the essence in business and technology\n* That you think in terms of systems and you are attuned to edge cases, failure modes, behaviors, specific implementations\n* Comfortable collaborating and communicating asynchronously, but expect direct communication within the team on a daily basis\n* Build software with empathy, ensuring it's intuitive and maintainable. Document key insights and solutions to make it easy for everyone to understand and use without needing extensive documentation\n* Experience with OpenResty, Varnish, Redis, Terraform or Ansible would be great for you to get up and running quickly, but we donโt bring you here to tell you what the right technologies are: rather we expect you to recommend the right one for each challenge\n* Experience with ClickHouse and/or rolling out database systems at scale would be a huge plus.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nโฌ62,000 - โฌ109,000 a yearThis role includes both cash compensation and a stock options grant. You can find our typical starting salary ranges for this role listed above. The final offer within this range will take into account several factors, including candidate experience, qualifications, skills, business needs, and geographical location.\nWe also offer:22 days of holiday a year (plus your birthday and public holidays).Comprehensive health benefits.Freedom to work from wherever suits you best. We provide up to โฌ2,400 to help you set up your home work space.\n\n\n#LI-Remote\n\n\nHow We Work:\nWeโre a fully remote company, committed to a remote-first culture.\nWith offices in Madrid and New York City, we love face-to-face interactions, you can visit whenever it suits you!\nAs weโre in the early stages, your contributions will have a significant impact on everything we do.\nWe believe in transparency, so youโll always be in the loop about whatโs happening.\nCheck out our blog or follow us on LinkedIn to find out more about whatโs important to us. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

\nThis role is one of our general tracks. Apply here for all engineering teams at Canonical who work on low-level system technology and embedded systems, across all seniority levels.\n\nWe hire careful and conscientious engineers who appreciate the challenge of memory, performance, battery and connectivity constrained code that has to work every time in an unreliable and unforgiving world, on x86, ARM or RISC-V silicon.\n\nCanonical Ubuntu is the leading Linux for software engineers, desktops, cloud and IoT. We bring open source to the world as a high-performance, safe and secure platform for enterprise computing, software engineering, and connected devices.\n\nThese smart, connected devices have the potential to transform every industry. Classic Ubuntu โ desktop or server โ is widely used in embedded systems because of its developer focus and enterprise grade security maintenance. We partner with the world's most prominent silicon companies to optimise Ubuntu on their latest and greatest chips, as well as with major OEMs and ODMs (PC, servers and connected device manufacturers) to ensure that Ubuntu works perfectly on their hardware.\n\nBut while classic, โdebโ based Ubuntu is ideal for developers, it has too much variability for appliance or connected device environments, where you want to know *exactly* what the state of millions or billions of devices might be. So Canonical builds Ubuntu Core, a fully containerised version of Ubuntu that is mathematically precise and rigorously secure. We are working on additional solutions for even smaller devices.\n\nWe have several teams that focus on open source for embedded environments. We hire outstanding Linux and RTOS software engineers with a passion for open source, innovation, cutting-edge hardware and software technologies in general. You will be expected to make significant contributions through high-quality design and code, and to develop your technical leadership.\n\nThese roles include:\n\n\n* Ubuntu Core and snapd software development \n\n* Silicon software and optimisation engineers \n\n* Kernel driver and hardware enablement engineers \n\n* Hardware-centric Linux QA Engineers \n\n* Hardware Certification Engineers \n\n* Robotics engineers \n\n* Industrial IoT software engineers \n\n* Networking software engineers (switching, routing, access and SmartNICs)\n\n\n\n\nAt Canonical you will have the opportunity to engage with the broader open source community. We're looking for individuals who can help build a thriving community, contribute to a broad range of technologies, and contribute to the deployment of Ubuntu and Ubuntu Core across the widest range of devices.\n\nLocation: we have remote roles open in every time zone.\nWhat your day will look like\n\nBased on the first round of interviews we identify specific teams where you might be an excellent fit, and conduct second round interviews with those teams. Our engineers:\n\n\n* Work with the latest Linux kernel, RTOS, and open source technologies\n\n* Deliver Ubuntu for the latest IoT and server-class hardware platforms\n\n* Integrate and maintain device-oriented software stacks\n\n* Write high-quality, well-designed software\n\n* Collaborate proactively with other globally distributed teams \n\n* Display technical leadership internally and within our external communities \n\n* Help our customers ship their apps and SDKs on Ubuntu\n\n* Build device OS images with Ubuntu Core, Desktop and Server\n\n* Optimise the Ubuntu kernel and libraries for silicon-specific capabilities \n\n* Debug issues and produce high-quality code to fix them \n\n* Contribute to technical documentation to make it the best of its kind \n\n* Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions \n\n* Participate as technical lead on complex customer engagements involving complete system architectures from cloud to edge \n\n* Work usually from home, with global travel 2 to 4 weeks for company events \n\n\n\nWhat we are looking for in you\n\n\n* An exceptional academic track record from both high school and university\n\n* Drive and a track record of going above-and-beyond expectations\n\n* Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a compelling narrative about your alternative path\n\n* Passion for embedded systems software (e.g. kernel, graphics, Yocto, RTOS) \n\n* Fluency in at least one of Golang, C, C++, or Rust \n\n* Professional written and spoken English \n\n* Experience with Linux (Debian or Ubuntu preferred) \n\n* Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability \n\n* Passion, thoughtfulness, and self-motivation \n\n* Excellent communication and presentation skills \n\n* Result-oriented, with a personal drive to meet commitments \n\n* Ability to travel twice a year, for company events up to two weeks each\n\n\n\nAdditional skills that you might also bring\n\n\n* Experience with Debian/Ubuntu or other distro packaging \n\n* Understanding of build systems and toolchains, including for cross-compilation \n\n* Experience with firmware, uboot, UEFI, ACPI, DSDT, or boot loaders\n\n* Experience with power management on PCI ASPM, SATA ALPM, low power profiles \n\n* Computer architecture knowledge of x86, ARM, RISC-V \n\n* Experience in board design, bring up, and validation \n\n* Experience with electrical engineering design tools (e.g. schematic capture, layout) \n\n* Familiarity with Ubuntu development model\n\n* Performance engineering and security experience \n\n* Shell or Python scripting skills \n\n\n\nWhat we offer you\n\nWe consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually (and more often for graduates and associates) to ensure we recognise outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus. We provide all team members with additional benefits, which reflect our values and ideals. We balance our programs to meet local needs and ensure fairness globally.\n\n\n* Distributed work environment with twice-yearly team sprints in person\n\n* Personal learning and development budget of USD 2,000 per year\n\n* Annual compensation review\n\n* Recognition rewards\n\n* Annual holiday leave\n\n* Maternity and paternity leave\n\n* Employee Assistance Programme\n\n* Opportunity to travel to new locations to meet colleagues\n\n* Priority Pass, and travel upgrades for long haul company events\n\n\n\nAbout Canonical\n\nCanonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the global move to open source. As the company that publishes Ubuntu, one of the most important open source projects and the platform for AI, IoT and the cloud, we are changing the world on a daily basis. We recruit on a global basis and set a very high standard for people joining the company. We expect excellence - in order to succeed, we need to be the best at what we do. Canonical has been a remote-first company since its inception in 2004.โ Working here is a step into the future, and will challenge you to think differently, work smarter, learn new skills, and raise your game.\nCanonical is an equal opportunity employer\n\nWe are proud to foster a workplace free from discrimination.
