About Us
At Close, we're building the sales communication platform of the future. With our roots as the very first sales CRM to include built-in calling, we're leading the industry toward eliminating manual processes and helping companies to close more deals (faster). Since our founding in 2013, we've grown to become a profitable, 100% globally distributed team of ~55 high-performing, happy people that are dedicated to building a product our customers love.
Our appโs frontend is a single-page JavaScript web app mostly written in Reactย (originally built with Backbone.js). We bundle with Webpack and target only modern browsers. We test with Jest and React Testing Library. Our UI updates in near real-time and is written in LESS/CSSย (withย flexbox and grid layout) using CSS modules and takes advantage of fun technologies like Websockets and WebRTC.
We care about performance (e.g. route-based code splitting), maintainability, and testability of our frontend code. We sweat the UI/UX details and work collaboratively with the Product team throughout the design process. This means diving into lo-fi wireframes, and communicating continuously when those ideas are brought to life using Figma and code.
Our frontend app is built on top of our REST API & GraphQL endpoints. Our backend tech stack consists of Python/Flask, MongoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis. We run our services in Docker on AWS.
We're looking for an experienced full-time Frontend Engineering Manager to join our engineering team. You should be an empathetic leader, have spent part of your career as a senior-level engineer, and want to help build & grow a team of high-performing engineers.
You should have senior-level (4 years+) experience building modern frontend applications, preferably using React or similar framework.
You should have significant experience (2 years+) leading and growing a team of engineers. You enjoy helping engineers thrive and grow in their roles. You should have a very good idea of how to run 1:1s with your direct reports and how to form strong relationships. You should be comfortable with giving continuous feedback and doing performance reviews. You are expected to grow the team as-needed and help lead a hiring process.
You have a track record of managing engineering teams that delivered great products and features. You should be very comfortable working with the Product and Design teams to formulate product ideas, skilled at writing & reviewing technical specifications, and planning work for your team. You can take on non-critical path technical work if time allows.ย
Youโre comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a medium-sized talented team where you're supported in your efforts to grow professionally. You are able to manage your time well, communicate effectively, and collaborate in a fully distributed team.
You are located in an American time zone.
Bonus points if you have...
Experience practicing theย Shape Upย product development methodology
Experience scaling a small engineering team into a few teams
Experience building JS-based mobile apps
Built B2B SaaS products
Experience with sales or sales tools
About the Role
Manage and grow a team of 4-8 high-performing engineers, support them through 1:1s and continuous feedback, and support their career growth.
A mix of team leadership, people management, product ideation, project coordination, and maximum 10% of your time spent on non-critical path IC work.
Work with a team of mostly-senior engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver great features.
Manage and optimize development processes as the team grows.
Participate in creating a long-term frontend strategy.
At Close, everyone has a voice. We encourage transparency and practice a mature approach to the work-place. In general, we donโt have strict policies, we have guidelines. Work/life harmony is an important part of our business - we believe you bring your best to work when you practice self-care (whatever that looks like for you).ย ย
We come from 16 countries located in 5 of the 7 continents -- looking at you Antarctica and Australia ;-) โฆ.. Weโre a collection of talented humans rich in diverse backgrounds, lifestyles, and cultures. Every year we meet up somewhere around the world to spend time with one another. These gatherings are an opportunity to strengthen the social fiber of our global community.
Our team is growing in more ways than one - weโve recently launched 17 babies (and counting!). Unanimously, our favorite and most impactful value is โBuild a house you want to live in.โ We strive to make decisions that are authentic for our people and help our customers become more successful.
Our application process was designed to promote equitable and unbiased hiring practices. We ask a small series of questions that are similar to what would be asked in the first interview. This helps us learn more about you right from the start so please be sure to answer each question thoughtfully. Each application will receive two screens by two different reviewers. Regardless of fit, you will hear back from us letting you know if we'll be moving forward.

\nJob title: Senior Full Stack (Typescript, React/React Native) Developer\nType: Remote, permanent, full-time position \n\nDo you have a soft spot for profitable companies with a meaningful, globally used and loved product? Would you like to work within a compact, super-capable team in a refreshing work environment? Would you like to work on an application that is changing the way we learn and communicate? Drops could be the place for you.\n\nAbout us:\nOur goal at Drops is to ensure effective language learning through a delightful, seamless, gamified experience. We strive to be the #1 app for vocabulary learning. Our app has been live on the App Store for 4 years, covering 42 languages, serving over 27 million users across the globe and has been featured on both the App Store (App of the Day) and Play Store (App of the Year in 2018). Drops has also been featured by TechCrunch, FastCo, Forbes, CNN, Bloomberg, VentureBeat and many, many more. In short, weโre a tiny but very powerful team spread (mostly) across Europe, achieving great things the remote way! In December 2020, Drops was acquired by Kahoot!, the worldโs leading game-based learning platform\n\nCheck us out here: https://languagedrops.com\n\nAbout you:\nYouโre a no-nonsense person, comfortable taking on a variety of projects who has been working within product companies and has extensive development experience across the development.\n\nYouโve spent years within the frontend (React/React Native), combining your presentation layer with your backend business logic. You have a deep understanding of data structures, storage and restful API design for both the browser or a mobile client. You enjoy the challenge of growing a product from an (already) large user base to a larger one with tens of millions of MAU with all the complexities it comes with.\n\nYou are an advocate for static typing and prefer to use a minimal set of simple tools over complex ones. You know when to store data within RDS or when to use S3, you know when you should use object storage or relational. You know your way around the core AWS services and youโre comfortable with maintaining CI/CD pipelines\n\nYou believe variety is the spice of life - In this role, youโll be developing a complex app deployable to web and app stores, building internal automation infrastructure/tooling and contributing to our CMS project. Youโll be working on our fully serverless, auto-scaling architecture for both product development and technical debt refactoring. \n\nDrops is a deliberately small, but super effective team. Youโre naturally drawn to the fate of the products & driven to grow as an engineer rather than to manage people.\n\nThe role:\nYouโll be a core part of the development team, working on both our main (Drops) and auxiliary products (Droplets, Visual Dictionary, Internal CMS tooling). Drops values clear, honest communication and transparency. Itโs the linchpin of our culture, success and freedom. Youโll be involved in both high and low level decision making and are available during European working hours (10AM - 6PM CET). Remember, weโre looking for a missionary here rather than a mercenary. \n\nYou will:\nWork cross functionally with our lead designer / data analyst / engineers / project owner to define, scope, estimate and plan various aspects of the product\nWork independently (and with other engineers!) to develop new web experiences\nSupport of production applications / sites that youโve built or helped to build\nCommunicate effectively and often to ensure that everyone is aligned\n\nWhatโd be different here:\nWeโre a small team.
