Over a million designers use Sketch to transform their ideas into incredible products, every day. Would you like to join us and help take the infrastructure that supports this leading design tool to the next level? We're looking to expand our team with a full-time **Site Reliability Engineer**.\n\nAt Sketch, we work with a unique technology blend: a cloud platform and macOS and iOS applications. Our cloud stack is based on a mix of serverless and traditional server applications built on Elixir and Go, along with other cloud services like RDS PostgreSQL, S3, SQS, ... Most pieces are deployed on AWS ECS and automated through Terraform; we use Chef for configuration management where it's needed. Our SRE team usually codes with Python whenever we need to write a small program or script.\n\nAs a Site Reliability Engineer at Sketch, you will focus on shaping our cloud infrastructure and make sure all the pieces work well together: development environments, metrics processing and observability, security policies, network design, deployment strategies, high availability, etc. You will work closely with backend, frontend, Mac developers and product managers to guarantee product focussed, smooth engineering processes.\n\nAs an example of one complex project we have worked on lately, we recently migrated our production database from MariaDB to PostgreSQL using streaming replication to minimise the potential downtime and have replicated environments to adapt and test our backend APIs properly.\n\n**About you**\n\nWe look for someone who has experience with different stacks (mainly Linux based), technologies and production models and has participated actively on the build of essential pieces of a cloud platform.\n\nSomeone that knows how to conduct a technical operation that potentially affects users and at the same time can code small applications and scripts to automate the platform and also debug problems in other people's code.\n\nYou care about security, code quality, scalability, performance, and simplicity. Above all, you seek operational excellence and apply the best engineering practices possible. Not everything that you or your team do can be perfect, but you make sure that you always know the trade-offs. You back your decisions with arguments. You don't care for hype and always try to find the best solution and technology for the job and its context.\n\n**Essentials**\n\n* Professional experience managing Linux-based and cloud-native distributed systems in the past\n* Experience coding with high-level programming languages like Python\n* Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, and configuration management tools to automate manual operations\n* A good understanding of the HTTP protocol and the behavior of production web services\n* Excellent communication skills and a good written and spoken English\n* You're based in European / African timezones.\n\n**About Sketch**\n\nSketch is a 100% remote company, and your colleagues are distributed around the globe. Being remote adds great flexibility, and helps us build a more diverse team. We put respect for each other above everything else.\n\nBesides being remote we work asynchronously as often as we can. This means that our team communicates mostly using Slack and GitHub. When we need it, we also have video calls.\n\nOur Technology team has more than 60 people today, split between Mac, Backend, Frontend, Infrastructure and QA. In particular, the Infrastructure team has 6 members. We work in multidisciplinary squads: people from different roles, including members of the Product team, work together on solving problems and delivering functionality to our users.\n\n**We care about your well-being and your professional success, so we offer you**\n\n* Flexibility to organize your own time, no set hours\n* As many vacation days as you need\n* Whatever training you need to develop in your job\n* The laptop you need\n* The option to work anywhere in European/African timezones\n* Company equity\n* Paid family leave \n* An annual company meetup \n\nPlease mention the words **UPDATE BANANA UNUSUAL** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMTguMTE3LjcxLjI0NA==). \nAt Jimdo, our mission is to help small businesses start, grow, and ultimately thrive online. Small businesses face new challenges with very little support or recognition. We know how hard this can be because we have been in their position. That’s where you can help us—by designing intuitive tools to help small businesses solve complex problems.\n\nWith a forward-leaning and self-driven attitude, we continue to find new ways to help our customers get their ideas out into the world. As a team, we run at a steady pace to achieve what we aim for. We learn best by gathering data, trying new things, and sometimes even falling down along the way. It’s the lessons we learn in the process that make us better problem-solvers for small business owners.\n\nIf you’re motivated by our mission and excited to roll up your sleeves, try new things, learn from mistakes, and make a difference to small businesses around the world, we would love to work with you.\n\nThe Team\n\nAs a result of a growing engineering organization and the necessity to support more diverse business and engineering needs, Jimdo founded a new group of engineering teams that focus on engineering effectiveness.\n\nThe Reliability Team is a group of experts around operating high-traffic systems. They consult and educate engineering teams across Jimdo to ensure high-availability, scalable, and resilient products. They strive for a close collaboration between engineering teams to achieve maximum business value.\n\nLocation\n\nWe are happy to invite you to work with us in our office in Hamburg or permanently remote from any location. Wherever your working location of choice will be, we will make sure you get proper onboarding (virtual or in person) and that you are fully equipped to become part of the team from day one.\n\nRegarding candidates who want to relocate to Hamburg: Due to COVID our offices are temporarily closed. We will invite you to start working with us from your current location for the time being. Once the borders are reopened, and the Embassies accept visa applications again, we will initiate the relocation process to Hamburg. Until then, you will be invited to work with us remotely with a temporary contract.\n\nWhat You'll Do\n\n\n* Work closely with the engineering team to define best-practices and goals around availability.\n\n* Design, build and operate tooling to address common operations challenges.\n\n* Educate and consult engineering teams on designing, building and operating maintainable, scalable, and reliable backend systems.\n\n* Be responsible for the overall system’s health.\n\n* Debug production issues across multiple services and levels of the stack.\n\n\n\n\nWhat We Value\n\n\n* Jimdo's success is rooted in no small part in consequently using state-of-the-art cloud services. We are looking for engineers that have a solid grasp of cloud technologies and have a strong interest in distributed systems.\n\n* More than 150 million users access our services every day. It is our first- and foremost duty to ensure industry-leading uptime and as little impact as possible when things don't go as planned. You fit right in when you have worked in this environment before and share the same values.\n\n* A track record of diagnosing problems within complex systems\n\n* We leverage different technologies and languages depending on the problem we try to solve, so we value people who are able to pick up new languages when necessary. Right now Go is our default choice.\n\n* You have excellent problem-solving skills. You use a systematic and thorough approach. You think from first principles. You have a bias for action.\n\n\n\n\nJimdo is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. This means that we don’t discriminate based on race or ethnic origin, color, the language(s) you speak, where you (or your parents) are from, or whether or not you consider yourself to have a disability. Neither will your age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, beliefs, or political opinions play a part in your application with us. \nSITE RELIABILITY ENGINEER - APPLICATIONS\n\nWe are looking for a talented Applications Site Reliability Engineer (ASRE) to work alongside our applications developers to help them design, deploy and operate the next generation of Fastly’s production service platform. Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) drives the reliability, speed, efficiency, and security of our backend systems. Each ASRE is embedded in a particular application team for a period of 6-12 months, where they consult with and assist that team on scalability, reliability, deployment, observability, operational documentation, and production readiness. This embedding model allows the ASRE to get real depth in a particular Fastly application and build ongoing relationships with that application engineering team, while also gaining technical breadth of experience via team rotation.\n\nAt Fastly, ASRE is critical for the company. A reasonable accommodation is a change in the way things are normally done which will ensure an equal employment opportunity without imposing undue hardship on Fastly. Please inform us if you need assistance completing any forms or to otherwise participate in the application process. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

\nIf you’re smart, passionate about technology and enjoy solving complex technical challenges then you should apply to join our best-in-class tech team. We believe that people are our most important asset and one worth protecting. As such, we’re known for creating an enviable working culture to keep our employees smiling on a day to day basis. \n\nWe offer things such as flexible hours, remote working, fortnigtly hackathons and freedom to work on projects of individual interest to name just a few. In fact, our impressive working culture has recently earned us 1st place in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work for 2015. \n\n\nWe have two different positions.\n\n\n1. Senior Developers who would like to lead a team / projects - We envisage the split here being about 70% hands-on coding and 30% leading the team, liaising with product owners on prioritization work, attending iteration planning meetings with stakeholders, delegating tasks to dev team, and making sure we are following Lean / Agile processes correctly.\n\n\n2. Senior Developers who want to be 100% coders (non-lead) - This role will be 100% hands on working with our other Devs to code beautiful products for our customers! \n\n\n\nSome of our Current Projects: \n\nSeedy - Our custom built CMS. A hybrid, markdown based, sinatra driven CMS but with a TDD undercurrent. Content changes are no different to backend refactoring. Templates are written in a custom DSL that enforces our style guide while still supporting iterative changes and automatic deployment. Across the company people (including business teams) are now being tagged in pull requests and even writing code!\n\nAerie - We’re overhauling our data and analytics architecture. Using the latest approaches in event streaming, we are building a brand new data pipeline based on Kinesis and Redshift that will support the analysis of both structured and semi-structured data in near real-time. This will provide rapid and intuitive customer insight to our decision makers, while also providing exciting machine learning capabilities back to our core product offering.\n\nAAA - We are enhancing our new world platform. Our current focus is on security with a view to building out ‘infrastructure as code’ using tools such as AWS CloudFormation, AWS OpsWorks, Chef/Puppet and many others. Essentially, we believe a well architected system allows us to avoid unnecessary complexity and can enable individuals to generate great output.\n\nOur Tech Stack\n\n\n\n\n* Ruby\n\n* Rails \n\n* Scala \n\n* MongoDB\n\n* RabbitMQ\n\n* Puppet/Boxen\n\n* AWS \n\n* Hadoop / RedShift / Looker /Tableau\n\n* Cucumber / RSpec / Jasmine \n\n* SASS / HAML / HTML5 / CSS3 / JavaScript / CoffeeScript / jQuery\n\n\n\n\n\nThis list changes all the time, as being on the lookout for new technology trials and opportunities is part of our code. We don’t believe in limiting ourselves, or the company. If there are other tools that could get the job done better, we’re committed to exploring them.\n\nThings we believe in:\n\n\n\n\n* TDD / BDD\n\n* Continuous Delivery\n\n* Pair Programming\n\n* Build – Measure - Learn\n\n* Active participation to open source\n\n* Our business people writing code (we've not seen this anywhere else!) \n\n* Cross functional teams (Dev / QA/ Data / UX / Product owners all sitting together) \n\n* Release early and learn quickly - we release our software to production around 15 times a day on average! \n\n* Continuous learning - we look to pay for courses and conferences and actively encourage our Devs to get out and about in the community. We have even sent some of our Devs to Miami, Portugal and Barcelona for conferences recently. \n\n* Have fun! We do ruby coding challenges during lunchtimes over pizza, we have desk beers on a friday, we have several social events throughout the year, we do fortnightly hackathons, we have afterwork clubs like: UX, Data science and Robotics club, we have flexible working hours, weekly 'show n tell' sessions, and lot's more! \n\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n
