Remote Design and Research Translation Intern

Note that benefits for employees outside the US vary, and non-US employment is limited to countries supported by Remote.com\n\nLocation: Remote, in a time zone with at least 3 hours of overlap with PST (host is in Seattle)\n\nReports to: Dylan Baker, Research Engineer\nAbout The DAIR Institute\n\nThe Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) aims to work on interdisciplinary AI research with ethics and foresight baked in from the start. Our center is distributed to ensure that researchers from many different backgrounds can participate while embedded in their communities. We aim to communicate our work in forms that are accessible and useful to members of impacted communities, rather than purely based on research papers accessible only to a select few.You can learn more about DAIR at https://dair-institute.org.\nPosition Summary\n\nIn this internship, you will contribute to DAIRโs goal of communicating our research to the public through creative means. Over the course of this internship, you will work with Dylan and other members of the DAIR team to construct a creative piece designed to reach an impacted community who might benefit from, and might not otherwise have access to, DAIRโs work.\n\nAt least one output of this project should be a zine (examples: coveillance, A Peopleโs Guide to Tech, zines about labor organizing), with both a print and digital form. However, this does not have to be limiting. Depending on your interests and the topic we select, this project can include additional outputs, such as: creating posters, organizing a workshop, building an interactive web page, tabling at a zine fest, or creating some other artistic intervention heretofore unseen. The underlying goal is simply to communicate DAIRโs work to relevant communities, and this project will include some amount of creative flexibility.\n\nYou will be expected to attend weekly team meetings and regular check-ins with your host.\nDesired Qualifications\n\n\n* Proactive communication skills; confidence asking questions and seeking help when needed\n\n* Strong writing skills (some experience in scientific/technical communication or educational writing helpful)\n\n* Interest in grassroots movement organizing, especially around tech\n\n* Familiarity with the tech industry/AI ecosystem and understanding the social implications of artificial intelligence (not strictly necessary, but helpful)\n\n\n\n\nCandidates should have at least one of the following: \n\n\n* Experience with some form of graphic design and/or illustration\n\n* Experience creating zines through any medium (be it low-fi DIY copy machine cut-and-paste or a meticulously-designed mini art book)\n\n* Basic understanding of web design and development tools (HTML/CSS/JavaScript)\n\n* Experience in some kind of artistic medium that lends itself to this work (e.g. traditional illustration, mixed media art, web design, print design) Note: we are not interested in โAI-assistedโ art practices of any form.\n\n\n\nWork Location & Environment\n\nThe DAIR Institute is fully remote and geographically distributed, but we require this position to be at a location with a timezone that has at least 3 hours of overlap with the Pacific and Eastern time zones in order to work closely with your host.\nApplication Information\n\nTo apply, please submit your CV/resume and a portfolio of your work by March 6, 2024.\nEqual Opportunity Employer\n\nThe DAIR Institute is fiscally sponsored by Code for Science & Society (CS&S).
