Apply for this job

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!

When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to pay to buy equipment which they then pay you back for later. Also never pay for trainings you have to do. Those are scams! NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! Posts that link to pages with "how to work online" are also scams. Don't use them or pay for them. Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. Our focus today is on creating a DevOps UX that software engineers actually enjoy, which we do by creating building blocks that make launching in the cloud 10x better/faster/easier. We work with AWS, K8s, Terraform, Terragrunt, Terratest, Go, Typescript, and React, and introduce new tech as needed. Weโ€™re a small team (~20 people), but our clients include Toyota, Adobe, TicketMaster, Verizon, and hundreds of startups.

We are profitable, self-funded (no investors, no debt), and pay salaries, equity, and bonuses according to transparent formulas. We are 100% remote, with 2/3 of our team in the USA and 1/3 in Europe. We plan company-wide in-person meetups every few months and are known world-wide for both DevOps thought leadership and our popular open source tools, Terragrunt and Terratest.

Our measure of a successful Grunt is (1) think like an owner, (2) make impact, (3) communicate effectively, (4) be a good person. If this sounds like you, we're hiring!

About The Role

Our infrastructure as code library and platform team delivers an end-to-end, best-practices infrastructure on AWS in just days, all as a product. In this role, youโ€™ll collaborate with other senior-level engineers to define the next generation of AWS and DevOps best practices, codify them for use by thousands of engineers, and design a next-level experience for implementing, operating and understanding them.

What You'll Work On

  • Build a better DevOps experience.ย We have a unique product that generates complete, multi-account AWS architectures for Terraform and Terragrunt in just a few hours using a collection of internal Golang tools. Help us take this to the next level by using that product to deliver prod architectures directly to customers, and then leveraging their feedback for improvements. Better yet, help us get to the point where the entire experience is completely automated or self-service.
  • Codify AWS and Terraform best practices.ย Customers look to Gruntwork to share the best way to launch on AWS. Discover AWS and Terraform best practices, and then codify them as repeatable patterns that Gruntwork customers can pull off the shelf.
  • Integrate with the Gruntwork platform.ย Integrate your product work with our company-wide platform, which consists of a REST API (Next.js/Typescript), a web-based single-page app (Next.js/React/Typescript, Tailwind), and a first-class CLI tool (Go).
  • Build out the Infrastructure as Code Library.ย Create and maintain reusable infrastructure modules for a variety of infrastructure (e.g., EKS, ECS, RDS, VPC, Lambda, EC2, S3, ElastiCache, etc.), using a variety of tools (e.g., Terraform, Go, Python, Bash, Docker, Packer, etc.) on AWS.
  • Contribute to open source.ย Contribute to our open source projects as needed, including Terragrunt, Terratest, cloud-nuke, bash-commons, and more.
  • Train and mentor.ย Play to your strengths and areas of expertise by not only writing code and working on the product but also by sharing knowledge and mentoring both other team members and our customers in those areas.
  • Support customers.ย Gruntwork is a small, distributed, self-funded, profitable startup, so we'll ask you to provide a limited amount of support to enable learning directly from customers about how we can improve and continue achieving our vision of making it easier to understand, build, and deploy software.

Your Ideal Background

You should meet some of these requirements, but you don't need to meet all of them. As a company, we look for people who can leverage their existing skills to make significant impact in the near term. As an individual, you are likely looking for a growth opportunity, a core part of which is building new skills.

  • You know how to write code across the stack and have experience in one or more of the following: Go, C++, Python, Typescript, Bash, React, Next.js
  • You have production-level experience with AWS.
  • You have expertise in one or more of the following: Kubernetes (any managed offering, preferably EKS), ECS<, EC2, Lambda / Serverless, API Gateway, RDS, S3, AWS Config, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon GuardDuty, IAM, VPC, VPN.
  • You have worked with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools like CloudFormation, CDK, or Pulumi in prod.
  • You have experience achieving compliance and going through audits (e.g., SOC2, HIPAA, vendor, etc).
  • You have a strong background in software engineering.
  • You have strong communication skills in English and are comfortable engaging with external customers.

Your Ideal Values

  • You have a passion for imparting best practices to other developers.
  • But you would rather invest the time to automate a problem than do the same work again.
  • You have a passion for learning (new technologies and languages specifically).
  • But you are motivated most by making impact.
  • You are inspired by our values (https://gruntwork.io/about/#our-values).

Compatible Time Zones

You'll be working with a team in theย US time zones, so you can be located in almost any country as long as your time zone is no further west than Los Angeles (GMT-8/GMT-7) and no further east than New York (GMT-5/GMT-4). We've found that when everyone on the team is located in similar time zones, it's easier to collaborate and there's much less pressure to stay up late or get up early, so this is a hard constraint, even if you're willing to work hours different from your current time zone.

Benefits

Our benefits reflect our values. We believe compensation should be fair, transparent, and generous. We hire Grunts in many countries, so some details may vary.

  • Location Independent, Above-Market Salary.ย To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all salaries using formulas. The formula factors in your title and uses a multiplier to produce a result that's above market for that title. Our salaries are location independent.
  • Profit-Sharing Bonus.ย We set aside a pot of money at the end of each year based on profits and distribute bonuses according to a formula that uses as inputs your level within the company and the length of your tenure at the company.
  • Hardware Budget.ย We'll buy you a brand new 16" Apple MacBook Pro (or other computer of your choosing of equivalent value) upon joining. It will be owned by you, not the company.
  • Personal Budget.ย We'll give you a personal budget of $1,000 USD per month to spend on your workspace (e.g., a co-working space), health (e.g., gym, yoga), time (e.g., babysitter), and/or learning (e.g., books, courses).
  • Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance.ย We offer a range of high-quality plans with a large portion paid by the company. For countries other than the US, this includes extra coverage on top of your statutory insurance.

In addition to the global benefits listed above, we have some US-specific benefits as well:

  • FSA and HSAs.ย We don't contribute to these accounts, but we do offer them as an option.
  • 401(k).ย We contribute a portion of your salary to your 401(k).
  • Disability insurance.ย If you get disabled, we have a policy that will pay out a portion of your salary.

Life First, Then Work

We believe in planning our work around our lives, not the other way around. To help achieve that we offer:

  • Remote workย that lets you control your hours and physical location.
  • Normal working hoursย that usually amount to not more than ~40h per week, and no working on weekends or holidays.
  • Deliberate project planningย that takes into account the time zone of all team members.
  • A minimum vacation policyย where you must takeย at leastย 4 weeks per year away from work.
  • No one carrying a pagerย and no on-call rotation. We enable this by only offering support contracts with SLAs of responses on business days / hours only.

ย

What is the job?

As a DevOps Engineer at RDX Works, you will lovingly maintain our (your!) virtual infrastructure, while supporting the needs of our different stakeholders, which range from a collection of community node runners to developers and SDETs.

You will begin in familiar territory, performing care and feeding for dozens of virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters while gathering performance data and tuning for the CPU/memory/disk sweet spot which best balances performance and cost.

Youโ€™ll participate in the continuous improvement of our current monitoring and alerting system so that we know when things are going awry and can take action.

After you have a handle on how to keep things running smoothly, as part of the DevOps team you will engage with members of the different developer teams and node runners, always devising best practices for running Radix nodes and other RDX applications on a variety of cloud platforms.

You will participate in our on-call rotation process, to ensure that someone from RDX is always available to investigate a disruption in service. You will respond to alerts and track them to resolution, while learning from incidents and feeding suggestions back to our internal DevOps, SDET, and developer teams, and improving our internal operational rulebook.

What are we looking for?

  • You have maintained production systems on virtual infrastructure, and you possess a healthy collection of war stories from past disasters.
  • You have a wealth of knowledge about Docker which you never get to use at parties.
  • Youโ€™re handy with an assortment of scripting languages, ideally Python or Bash.
  • You have a deep-seated need to automate things. The idea of doing a repeatable process manually is abhorrent to you.
  • Youโ€™re patient when dealing with others. Youโ€™re a good listener, and happy to be a teacher when needed.
  • You are a tenacious sleuth, able to persistently research and reason about difficult-to-reproduce problems until you have brought them to a satisfactory resolution.

What do you need?

  • Significant experience in a DevOps role
  • Production experience with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, and Azure (We use AWS)
  • Strong familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Familiar with agile processes
  • Experience working with observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana Stack
  • Hands on experience with a scripting language
  • Comfortable with at least one infrastructure-as-code tool, such as Ansible and Terraform
  • Comfortable configuring and managing at least one popular Linux distribution.

Things That Will Really Help You Stand Out

  • Proven history of managing clustered/distributed environments
  • Proven history of node running at scale for any blockchain/distributed ledger
  • Have experience with Kubernetes
  • Chaos engineering is not alien to you

Who are we?ย

At RDX Works, we're a team of like-minded thinkers who have long been convinced that we're living in the earliest stages of a global financial revolution. This revolution is being fuelled by decentralized finance (or DeFi for short), which is enabling an assortment of pioneering developers and entrepreneurs to re-invent almost every financial product that is currently traded and invested in traditional markets, without requiring central authorities or siloed infrastructure. DeFi has captured a great deal of attention and investment in the crypto-aware niche, growing assets under management from $1 billion to over $200 billion in a few years. Impressive as its growth has been, its current market size isn't even a rounding error on the over $400 trillion held in traditional finance. We're focused on what it will take to go from billions to trillions.

RDX went back to first principles to come up with the right technical solutionโ€”the first layer-one protocol built specifically for mainstream DeFiโ€”and we have already tested out at over 1 million transactions per second. We're keenly aware that the need for an infinitely scalable platform is only one prerequisite among many for mass adoption, and we're also blazing new ground in the areas of purpose-built developer tools, user experiences, and regulatory integration.

We have forged a path deep into the future of what distributed ledger technology is going to look like and we need you to come and be part of the team that is making that happen right now.

If this job sounds like it was made for you, then please apply directly via the link or if you donโ€™t have an up-to-date CV to apply with, please contactย [email protected]ย for more information.

Check out our company benefits here -ย RDX Works Benefitsย ย

Alternatively, if you feel like you donโ€™t match all of the requirements, we would love you to still apply anyway. We understand that confidence gaps and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting incredible candidates and we wouldnโ€™t want this to prevent us from meeting you; especially as we are big advocates of helping people learn & grow. This is also another reason we do not advertise salaries, we want to keep it as even a playing field as possible!ย

Here at RDX Works, we believe in being salary agnostic. This means that we pay salaries based on your expertise and what you can add to the business, aligning with London market rates; not based on your location or the economy of your country of residence.

What is this job position about?

The podcast revolution needs smart, innovative problem solvers who are quick on their feet. Do you want to help content creators and advertisers get heard amongst the vast ocean of the podcasting world? We connect these two worlds, enabling them to benefit from one another.

Our global podcast hosting network delivers more than 300 million listens per month across four continents, enabling more than 50 thousand podcast producers to get heard and create successful podcasts.

Weโ€™re looking for a talented and passionate engineer to work on our platform and products. Youโ€™ll work with our team of engineers to build, improve and maintain our web applications, our APIs, and other applications built using web technologies.

You will learn how to build and operate a distributed system composed of large and micro services. You will continuously learn new technologies and keep up with the fast-pace of our industry, making sure that you never feel like youโ€™re stuck on old and boring projects.

Youโ€™ll be asked to organize your time, plan your work and be a team player. We expect you to take ownership of the systems you build, and that means:

  • Youโ€™re responsible for the operational health of your services. The work is not done just because the code is merged to master.
  • Youโ€™re empowered and encouraged to fix operational issues and make sure the technology powering our platform and products evolves as the industry moves forward.

What boxes do you need to tick to apply for this position?

These are the essentials:

  • You are fluent in English (both verbal and written)
  • You live in a European time zone (CET-2/CET+2)
  • You have proven, long-term experience in building applications with Node.js
  • You are familiar with build automation, TDD and continuous integration
  • You know how to deal with SQL databases and key-value data storages

This is what will get you some bonus points:

  • You built and operated services based on AWS Lambda and Serverless architectural patterns
  • You worked in the AdTech or Podcasting industry
  • You are familiar with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis
  • You are familiar with Docker and Jenkins

What do we offer?

This is the package we offer to everyone working at Spreaker:

  • Contract: a traditional employment contract if your country of residence is Italy (where Spreaker has a local branch office), or an open-ended consulting agreement if you live in another European country. In both cases, you get the exact same benefits described below.
  • Laptop: a powerful M1 Macbook Pro to never feel you're wasting your time waiting for your computer to do what you need.
  • Work-From-Home budget: an initial โ‚ฌ1000 to buy everything you need to work from home, followed by a โ‚ฌ250 yearly budget for further upgrades.
  • Training budget: in addition to the internal training activities the company provides, you get โ‚ฌ1200 on a yearly basis to spend to improve your skills. This budget can be used for example to buy conference tickets, books, attend workshops, or even pay for English lessons.
  • Paid time off: in addition a company-chosen 2 weeks to cover for traditional holidays, each year you also get 6 additional weeks to use however you like. We encourage everyone to use them in full and enjoy their time off to recharge their batteries.
  • Flexible hours: while we look for a significant overlap in working hours to maximize team collaboration, there's no fixed "working hours" at Spreaker. Whether you need walk the dog, go to the post office or simply enjoy spending an extra hour in bed in the morning, we've got you covered.
  • Bonus policy: a yearly bonus based on company performance, adding up to an extra 10% of the yearly compensation if the expected company growth is met or exceeded.

How do you apply?

We believe we can make the industry more data-driven, with less waste and greater transparency along the way. Thereby making the planet a better place as well.\n\nWe work distributed, synchronously, often sharing screens remotely to work collaboratively. \nJob Responsibilities\n\n\n* Make sure our infrastructure stays up and running 24/7.\n\n* Repair nodes as they fail and deploy new hardware as we scale our infrastructure.\n\n* Perform task related to deploying new software, managing DNS, maintaining OS security patches, etc.\n\n* We have an existing infrastructure that you will be managing for the next 90 days as we transition to our new stack.  \n\n* Deploy new systems and scale our infrastructure as we expand our capacity for more content and customers.\n\n\n\n\nIdeal Candidate\n\nThis position can be located anywhere in the world with ideally at least a 4 hour overlap with the Pacific Standard Time Zone (PST / UTC-8). We're based out of San Francisco but are migrating to the international level. If you don't have a natural time overlap with UTC-8 you should be willing to work evenings to be able to communicate easily with the rest of the team.\n\nCulturally, we’re a remote company and want to embrace it as a way to reward our employees. We are fine with you working in remote locations as long as you’re generally available for communication and are productive.\n\nThe plan is to transfer all operations management to you, including being on call for outages, and knowing our operations tasks including bringing up new machines, dealing with failures, etc.\n\nWe want someone to come in full time as a contractor role. I suspect we will need about 40 hours from you per week.  \n\nArchitecture:\n\nOur infrastructure consists of Java on Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) with the stack running on ActiveMQ, Cassandra, Zookeeper, and Jetty. We use Ansible to manage our boxes. We have a full-text search engine based on Elasticsearch and store our firehose API data within Cassandra.\n\nWe have a totally new stack and infrastructure at this point. We recently did a full-stack rewrite and moved all the old code to our new infrastructure. This means we have very little legacy cruft to deal with.\n\nHere's all the cool stuff you get to play with:\n\n\n* Large Linux / Ubuntu cluster running with the OS versioned using both Ansible and our own debian packages for software distribution.\n\n* Massive amount of data indexed from the web and social media.  We index from 5-20TB of data per month and want to expand to 100TB of data per month.\n\n* Large Cassandra install on SSD.  \n\n* SOLR / Elastic Search migration / install.  We’re experimenting with bringing this up now so it would be valuable to get your feedback.\n\n\n\n\nCompensation:\n\n\n* Salary based on experience. We're willing to be competitive and a great company to work for.\n\n* Ability to work remotely at home. Live work balance is a must.\n\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to JavaScript, Node, Engineer, Linux, Ops, Elasticsearch, Java, API and Cassandra jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n
