About Heliax

Heliax is a public goods lab which researches, develops, deploys, and maintains open-source protocols and mechanisms designed to serve the everyday needs of humanity. Using these protocols and mechanisms, we build vertically integrated products and networks that form coherent open systems which are capable of acting as an alternative to existing exploitative paradigms.

Two of the most notable vertically integrated protocols are Anoma and Namada.ย

Anoma is an intent-centric, privacy-preserving protocol for decentralized counterparty discovery, distributed solving, and atomic multi-chain settlement โ€“ a radically novel architecture for decentralized protocols marking the beginning of the third generation of architectures ever since programmable settlement.

Namada is Anomaโ€™s first fractal instance. It is proof-of-stake Layer 1 protocol for asset-agnostic, interchain privacy. The key innovations include ZCash-like shielded transfers for any assets (fungible and non-fungible), incentivised privacy sets, and interoperability with Ethereum via a custom bridge and IBC.

Heliax is a remote-first (but not remotely-only) team, currently composed of +50 cross-disciplinary members located around the world.

  • Mentoring junior staff, imparting best practices

  • Third line support, troubleshooting and root cause analysis

  • Establishing CI/CD pipelines, and shaping a DevOps approach

  • Evolving our development culture, methods and tooling

  • Automating tests and upholding quality

We're looking for

  • Someone with broad full-stack engineering abilities

  • Excellent technical understanding of software engineering and data security principles

  • Comfortable with architecting web applications - or ready to grow into thisย

  • Technology agnostic and adept with Node.js, plus familiarity with a modern JS framework (we're currently using Angular) and/or TypeScript

  • Optionally, a good understanding of front-end technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3

  • Skilled in API developmentย

  • Appreciation for documentation, quality and best practice

  • Experience with Git/GitHub, and running CI/CD pipelines

  • Good technical familiarity with AWS Cloud services

  • Competent with SQL and MySQL/similar admin

  • A pragmatic application of Agile (both Scrum & Kanban) methodologies

You may also bring - or like to gain - skills or knowledge around any of

Influencing architecture, technology choice | mobile app development - e.g. Swift/Java/Kotlin, Firebase | secure coding practises, OWASP Top 10 | DevOps culture, pipeline automation | offshore collaboration, onshoring | mentoring engineers | Lean | algorithms and data science | establishing ETL pipelines and querying data warehouses

Salary and benefits

  • ยฃ70,000 - ยฃ90,000 - reviewed at six months - we're keeping an open mind

  • Share scheme for formative team members (once proven value to the business)

  • 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays) and 5 days unpaid leave

Location: fully remote, within the UK only. We'll get-together in person in London (Paddington), from time-to-time, monthly at most, and with good notice.

Please note, we can only consider candidates that hold an established right to work in the UK.

Memex is a personal & collaborative reader to collect, annotate and discuss websites, PDFs and Youtube videos. By yourself or with your team and community. We're in Beta and you can download it here: memex.garden.
This is made for DAOs, commercial and academic research teams, reading clubs and students with the need to collaboratively read and talk about web content, papers, Youtube videos and (soon) images.

Weโ€™re funded with support from Protocol Labs as well as leading people at Protocol Labs, Anaconda, Ceramic & RMRK.

Next, you'll be working on the collaborative curation and annotation workflows and on the sync between Discord and Memex Spaces to automatically extract links and conversations from there.

Here is a demo of it: https://share.descript.com/embed/njHdzaaXN9a

About the role

Youโ€™ll be the 3rd person joining our 2-person engineering team and will mainly work on the feature development. Upcoming are improvements to the collaboration experience, image support and the Discord sync.

While we use React, Typescript, Firebase and React Native, weโ€™re not looking for a checklist of technologies. Weโ€™re looking for people who can demonstrate experience and deep knowledge about programming and the surrounding skills to ship projects. (Weโ€™re not open to junior positions at this moment.)

This means the ability to analyze problems, communicate how youโ€™re going to solve them, the trade-offs involved with your approach, converting that into well-written code that your colleagues will have a good time continuing on and transferring knowledge. We value how much certain ideas and technologies fit the problem at hand and the overall architecture of the product, not which technologies are hot at at the moment.

We do combine simple ideas in exciting ways to allow us to achieve much more with a small team and create a developer experience only found in our company, with much more to come. This enabled that 95% of Memex was built by only 2 devs.

Hereโ€™s some other more things important to us:

  • The hurry to get out features and the need to clean up code so we can continue to ship quickly are at constant odds with each other. You can identify whatโ€™s needed to keep us nimble and are good at communicating that to developers and non-developers alike.
  • Youโ€™re passionate about opportunities you see to make the product and our experience working on our project great and clearly communicate advantages and trade-offs, but you recognize the different perspectives will enhance your ideas, or show that your idea is not the right fit for a particular context.
  • You value simple code that is easy to understand over smart code that people are afraid to change or costs needless effort to dive into (including for your own sake after youโ€™ve forgotten how the cleverness works.)
  • You can clearly communicate how much autonomy or guidance you need to get things done, but can also concisely keep people who depend on your work up to date and provide them with what they need to get their things done.
  • Weโ€™re building a platform encouraging the encounter of opposing ideas, and are strong proponents of free speech and care for our fellow humans. So even though we may intensely disagree, we recognize those who we disagree with as people with fundamental rights and human needs. We donโ€™t like to nurture cultures of cancelling, labelling people with all sorts of -isms and one-sided views across the political spectrum. Lets rather look under the hood and be curious about different viewpoints.

Why are we building Memex?

On our own we canโ€™t possibly understand the majority of polarising topics we encounter every day. However, we all search, filter, read and take notes about content online and produce information valuable to other people.

Memex aims to make sharing recommendations and conversations become so easy that we can share what we normally are be too busy to share, build on each othersโ€™ research and easily compare contrary ideas

We think that for a healthy social media environment it needs:

  • Companies that donโ€™t have such strong profit maximisation incentives that usually lead to extractive business practices like attention/ad-based business models or lock ins
  • People with the ability to modify their own experience of a newsfeed and notifications
  • Freedom of speech, but not necessarily freedom of reach
  • Reduce need for centralised moderation through communal and individual content moderation

The economics behind Memex

We are a Steward Owned organisation in order to prevent profit maximisation incentives that lead to extractive business models and practices, while still giving the company the ability to grow big and fast. To enable that investors and team have a capped return on their investments and company can never be sold. We can get pretty rich if we are doing a good job, but not become billionaires.

We believe there is no collective intelligence without individual intelligence. For individual intelligence to be expressed in a digital space we need to be able to adapt our tools & connect workflows that individually suit our needs. The uncapped investor returns of VC money are the root cause of lock-ins that significantly hinder the emergence of an open knowledge society and collective intelligence that is able to overcome the complex challenges of our time.

Works that shape how we develop Memex:

Why Jam.gg?

At the heart of Jam.ggโ€™s mission is the creation ofย a new way to share gamesย with friends and family: a free online place for gamers to play and hangout together, with video cameras, bringing back the golden era ofย multiplayer couch gaming. In a world of constraining internet connections and paid services, we think differently: we are building a free, โ€œlow-techโ€ friendly platform for everyone to jump in, directly from their browser. Our platform is social by design and packed with fun games curated by our community. We want to create new virtual social spaces that fundamentally diverge from today's typical social networks, focusing a lot less on appearance and a lot more on experience. We are building a social gaming platform for gamers and for developers, opening new ways to interact with their community.

Our startup has been growing very quickly since the end of 2020, attracting more thanย 60 international talentsย from developers and social media experts to designers. In June 2021, we introduced our cloud gaming beta platform featuring 80+ licensed games, including titles from industry-renowned publishers such as Arc System Works, Interplay, Team 17, Coatsink and Data East.ย Our portfolio is rapidly evolving, with more than 25 free modern party titles arriving on the platform this year, from Overcooked to Blasphemous!ย

Discovered and supported byย Y Combinator (Twitch, Reddit, Stripe, etc), our board of advisors include former SEGA CEO Kenji Matsubara, Zynga co-founders Justin Waldron and Tom Bollich, Crunchyrollโ€™s Kun Gao, and Humble Bundleโ€™s Jeffrey Rosen. Our last round was led by LEGO Ventures and top gaming VC firms.

With already more than 5 million users worldwide who have joined us so far, our teams are prepping for our next chapter and are on the lookout for talented and motivated folks who share our passionย  for gaming and want to make a real impact while embracing a true startup spirit (autonomy, transparency, user centric).

Jam.gg is an equal opportunity employer and we proudly value and promote diversity in our team. We do not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, World of Warcraft faction or disability status.

More infoย hereย on our mission, culture and team!

\nVarSome.com is the world’s prime reference for genetic variant interpretation. With over 500 citations in scientific papers and 300K users, we are seeking to bring together all human expertise in molecular genetics and make it available to doctors and researchers worldwide to improve the lives of their patients.\n\nYou will be joining our front-end development team as an experienced JavaScript front-end web developer - depending on experience this can become a team-lead role. Our core frontend technologies include the ReactJS Javascript framework but we also utilize the Vue JS framework on particular applications, using webpack to bundle CSS, LESS or SASS and Javascript code into reusable components. A Python based REST API layer backed by a high-performance C++ back-end and proprietary database formats optimised for genetic information, provides data to our frontend stack. Our platform is entirely Linux based, hosted in Google Cloud as well as our own high-security data-centre. We follow an Agile development process, most projects will touch multiple developers across the stack, but we keep individual tasks small (3 to 5 days) to remain responsive and deliver consistently.\n\nYour main responsibility will be to deliver an integrated suite of interactive UI components. You will play a key role in their design, working with back-end developers and genetic experts, to ensure our users are able to work efficiently and accurately. We deal with vast quantities of scientific data which presents a real challenge in understanding how best to display it, providing many opportunities for innovation. \n\nThis is a fully remote role: our core development team is located around Athens (though even our local staff work mostly from home), with other developers in the UK & Switzerland. Everybody speaks good English and the company is very experienced in coordinating a regionally distributed team, using an Agile work-flow. There will also be opportunities to travel occasionally, once Covid restrictions are lifted, to meet co-workers in person for off-sites or specific projects. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Design, Executive, Web Developer, Developer, Digital Nomad, JavaScript, Cloud, Python, API and Linux jobs that are similar:\n\n $65,000 — $120,000/year\n

We are looking for someone with a breadth of knowledge including best practices in front and back end coding, systems architecture, and web design to lead us into the near future.\n\nThe Barnes is fully rethinking all aspects of visitor facing technology. As such, you will have the opportunity to build our new technology stack—from the web server all the way to frontend libraries—from a blank slate in the way you think will work best for maintainability, scalability, security, and reliability.  While some early decisions have been made, you’ll be working to analyze those choices while thinking about the best past forward for a number of forward-thinking projects. \n\nIn addition to working on new digital projects, you will be responsible for creating technology standards and guidelines designed to foster maintainable coding practices and system design while ensuring these standards are implemented across all consultant projects. You will be responsible for conducting code reviews, security audits and any other inspections necessary to ensure projects meet the standards you will help establish. Projects under your supervision will need to be integrated into our new cloud infrastructure. This may include the creation of continuous integration infrastructure to handle the deployment of these projects as they are developed and maintained, as well as a means of managing the security concerns and many software dependencies these projects will introduce.\n\nIn this role, you may be coding projects onsite or overseeing consultant teams across multiple cities acting as a project liaison. As projects launch, you’ll be responsible for server maintenance and maintenance automation, including backups, disaster planning, patching and upgrading. You’ll be reporting to the Chief Technology Officer in addition to working closely with the Deputy Director of Digital Initiatives and Chief Experience Officer.  This position can be performed remotely, but ideally based in Philadelphia or New York City and will require occasional commutes to both of those cities. \n\nWe are open to hiring this role as a full-time or part-time position depending on needs of the right candidate.\n\nAbout Us: Established as an educational institution the Barnes Foundation carries out its mission by promoting appreciation of the arts and horticultural science, through the preservation, presentation, and interpretation of the collections of Albert C. and Laura L. Barnes.\n\nCelebrated for its exceptional breadth, depth, and quality, the Barnes Foundation’s art collection includes works by some of the greatest European and American masters of impressionism, post-impressionist, and early modern art, as well as African sculpture, Pennsylvania German decorative arts, Native American textiles, metalwork, and more. The 12-acre Arboretum contains over 3,000 species of woody plants and trees.\n\nThe Foundation engages diverse audiences through its exceptional collections and related high-quality programs that reflect a broad range of periods and cultures and build on the founders’ innovative educational vision of transforming lives through the arts and horticulture. \n\nSkills and Knowledge:\n\nRequired:\n\n\n* HTML, JavaScript, and frontend frameworks\n\n* Backend development languages and frameworks (PHP, Ruby, Ruby on Rails,Python, React, etc.)\n\n* Creating and maintaining cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)\n\n* SQL, Relational Database, NoDB, Elasticsearch\n\n* Third-party REST APIs and API authentication schemes\n\n* Source control management systems (git preferred)\n\n* Building and deploying continuous integration solutions\n\n* Securing web servers and auditing for secure web practices\n\n* Creating clear and concise coding standards and guidelines\n\n* Working effectively with remote teams\n\n* Communication skills including the ability to articulate complex technology concepts to non-technologists\n\n\n\n\nNice-to-haves:\n\n\n* Experience with unit and integration testing systems\n\n* Experience with managing machine-learning libraries and their dependencies\n\n* Familiarity with Agile development concepts and practice\n\n* Familiarity with Microservices/SOA architecture and best practices\n\n* Familiarity with the Android Studio SDK\n\n* Familiarity with CMS Engines, specifically Craft CMS\n\n\n\n\nCompetitive Benefits Include: Full time—Group health, dental and vision insurance; flexible spending accounts; short and long-term disability and group life insurance; 403(b) with matching contributions; Employee Assistance Program; voluntary benefits; as well as paid vacation, personal time, sick time and holidays. We are looking for a smart, creative front web developer with a strong design sense to complement the existing team. \n\nThis role will complement the rest of the founding team who has already built the back-end infrastructure and first beta version of the website. As we prepare to come out of beta and traffic is climbing, we now need an updated UI to match.\n\nThe current beta site has been developed in Ruby-on-Rails. We are migrating the core code to Elixir / Phoenix. We're looking to move to a ReactJS front end for the main UI, sporting responsive design and to share code with our parallel React Native app development efforts.\n\nHighlights\n\n\n* Get in on the ground floor and become an owner of a new, industry-transforming company.\n\n* Consult with former kayak.com founding employee & Chief Architect Bill O'Donnell, who is a technical advisor to the company.\n\n* Create your own solutions to challenging technical problems.\n\n* Choose the tools that will be used by you and your colleagues.\n\n* Lead and build the look and feel of an upcoming major e-commerce site.\n\n* Make mistakes, disrupt the status quo, and help us create the engineering culture that you would like -- build your own dream job!\n\n\n\n\nIf hired, you will receive a hefty equity grant relative to the position. You will also earn direct payment in the form of a revenue share on every dollar in revenue we generate directly and across our  1,000+ distribution partners. Your pay will increase as our gross revenue increases, until those rev-share pay levels reach your target salary.\n\nWe are located in the growing Lebanon/Hanover, NH tech region around Dartmouth and the Lebanon airport, but during our launch phase, we expect candidates to work from home, wherever that may be. We will pay for relocation, should that become necessary in the future.\n\nPart Time / Full Time\n\nWe're looking for someone who ultimately wants a full time position with us, but if you need a transitional period working for Scribl part time while you continue to do other work, we fully support that. \n\nSkills & Requirements\n\nNOTE: Your cover letter matters to us, maybe more than your resume! We want to know why you are interested in Scribl. Please read this section and write it accordingly.\n\nWe want you if you are:\n\n\n* Fun, kind, fast, and flexible\n\n* A good communicator\n\n* Possessed of a strong sense for minimalist and elegant design, with a dash of fun\n\n* Passionate about digital content, especially ebooks and audiobooks\n\n\n\n\nAnd have strong technical experience with:\n\n\n* ReactJS (or other deep JavaScript experience)\n\n* HTML5 and Responsive Design\n\n* SEO\n\n* Writing high-quality, testable, and maintainable JS code\n\n* E-commerce and security best practices\n\n* Adobe or other graphic design tools to support your UI work\n\n\n\n\nIf you have some experience with these, that's a plus, but it's not required:\n\n\n* Ruby-on-Rails or Elixir/Phoenix to work with our existing system and back-end\n\n* Familiarity with AWS hosting and OpsWorks\n\n* NGINX, Linux Ubuntu, and Docker \n\n* Full-stack capabilities\n\n* Media presentation of EPUB and stream audio\n\n* Podcasting\n\n* Mobile and Windows UWP development in React Native or Xamarin\n\n* Strong team-building and project management record\n\n* Leadership\n\n\n\n\nYou will be responsible to:\n\n\n* Work on your own and with other developers who are adding capabilities on the back-end and developing mobile apps to accompany our ebook and audiobook store\n\n* Build and support tight integration between the front end UI, our backend database, and our apps so the user experience is preserved regardless of how the user accesses our content\n\n* Nurture a healthy engineering culture\n\n\n\n\nIt is important that you either have or are willing to gain an appreciation for digital content creators -- authors and artists. Our success is dependent on our ability to help them prosper and want that perspective to be shared by everyone on our team. Please describe your interest in Scribl, CrowdPricing, ebooks, or authors in your cover letter. The resume should show you have the skills.
