Open Architects (OA) seeks a Lead Data Engineer to strategically enhance our ETL processes and data connectors, enabling reliable, sustainable, and scalable integration with diverse data systems. Reporting directly to OA’s Director of Technology, you will guide the development of our data engineering strategy, drive key architectural decisions, and build pipelines to extract customer data. Role & Responsibilities
Lead and implement strategic improvements to OA’s ETL infrastructure and processes.
Build and maintain robust data connectors to dozens of systems, ensuring reliability, scalability, and sustainability.
Monitor data pipeline performance, proactively troubleshooting and resolving issues to maintain data integrity and system uptime.
Collaborate with district IT departments to address and resolve technical issues beyond client service capabilities.
Develop internal documentation, guidelines, and best practices to support growth and onboarding.
Influence platform and technology decisions to improve pipeline resilience and transparency.
Qualifications
Required Technical Skills and Experience
4+ years of experience as a data engineer with Python as the primary programming language
Strong DevOps skills in a Linux environment, including CI/CD, Git, and containerization tools such as Docker
Experience with data pipeline orchestration and management technologies (e.g., Docker, Airflow, Kubernetes)
Proven ability to establish and document technical standards and operational best practices.
Bachelor’s degree required

Your key area of focus:

The Role
ORCID is seeking a DevOps Engineer. As a DevOps engineer, you should work with other software developers and QA specialists, and will be responsible for improving and maintaining the ORCID technological infrastructure. Improve the ORCID technological infrastructure: Work with the Tech Director, the Tech Manger and the development team in general to improve the current technological infrastructure, by keeping our infrastructure up-to-date with the latest technologies and patches, finding new tools that could improve the services we provide and experiment with new technologies to decide which ones could be used by ORCID to provide better services.
Monitor the status of ORCID technological infrastructure: Constantly check ORCID monitoring infrastructure to find problems or vulnerabilities that could affect the performance of ORCID services.
Author use-cases, technical/functional requirements, flowcharts, diagrams and documentation: Develop and maintain technical documentation, in the form of use-cases, technical/functional requirements, flowcharts, diagrams, docs and wiki pages, required by the team to understand and maintain the existing technical infrastructure.
Participate actively in iterative development meetings (stand-ups, kick-offs, retrospectives), and design sessions with project teams and working groups
Collaborate with team members, consultants, designers, the development community and users to plan, estimate and evaluate the risks of different features that could be added to the ORCID registry: Collaborate with different people from the ORCID community to generate plans that helps ORCID to develop new functionalities or improve the existing ones.
Collaborate in the finding of bugs and areas of improvement in the current ORCID Registry and related projects.
Participate in the out of hours on-call rota, and respond to tech emergencies when required (estimated 10 weeks of compensated on-call shifts per year) .

Overview

Backend API
Our high-level goal is to build a device/manufacturer agnostic integration layer that connects to various devices and exposes their functionality through a simple API. This task involves integrating dozens of different IoT brands and their protocols (z-wave, zigbee, bacnet, OEM API...etc) and neatly organizing them amongst common functionality.
This is one of our client libraries. The unlock functionality presented here works the exact same way across dozen of brands.
Seam Connect
This is an embeddable UX flow that developers add to their applications. It then allows their applications' users to grant access to their devices. Seam Connect guides users through selecting their device brands, entering their credentials, and dealing with edge cases like 2FA or multi-tenant accounts. For example, Airbnb can ask their host for access to their smart locks and thermostats. This then enables Airbnb to automate guest access and save energy while the unit is unoccupied.
Client Libraries
We often ponder how to create the best developer experience possible for our customers. To that end, we're big believers in client libraries over just offering a pure HTTP API. Though that API is available and documented, our customers have told us that being able to not think about the underlying HTTP requests makes our product enjoyable to work with. Some of our customers even suggest and implement changes to our client libraries!
We primarily write Seam using Typescript. We also believe that "best DevOps is no DevOps." To that end, we're trying to use serverless to run our entire infra.
