Whimsicalย is the thinking and collaboration tool for distributed work. Our software helps thousands of customersโ€”from individuals to Fortune 500โ€”to work together more effectively.

Whimsical is expressive, fast, and delightful. We believe that software should spark joy, not dread.

Weโ€™re now looking for an experiencedย Engineering Managerย to help move that vision forward!

About The Role

As an Engineering Manager, you will be managing a group of 6-8 engineers. You will ensure that they collaborate effectively, that the group has the right skills and capabilities, and that everyone in the group is excited to contribute.

You will also partner with Tech Leads of our product teams. While you will be responsible for the people on the team, the Tech Lead will be responsible for the technical direction and delivery of the team.

Day-to-day work

At Whimsical you can expect your day-to-day to include:

  • Ensure that your team has the right people to deliver on its objectives. You will do so through hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Coach the members of your team to support them and to help them grow professionally.
  • Work with your teammates to ensure that they get to work on challenging problems, are excited to contribute, and are recognized for their contributions.
  • Build trust-based relationships with the members of your teams through 1:1s to facilitate effective feedback and flow of information.
  • Lead different rituals and facilitate conversations to ensure that your teams collaborate effectively.

About You

  • Based in
    • ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆNorth America
    • ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บEuropean Union
    • ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งUnited Kingdom
  • You have considerable previous experience as a Software Engineer.
  • You feel that our philosophy resonates with you and you can see it guiding your decisions while at Whimsical.
  • Youโ€™ve successfully managed teams of Engineers in the past.
  • You are able to communicate in English clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • You are able to attract other great people to work with.
  • You can motivate and inspire.
  • You have courage and the ability to have difficult conversations candidly and empathetically.
  • You can manage your own time and prioritize your work.
  • You always looking to refine your methods by collaborating with your manager and peers.

What We Offer

  • 100% Remote: Weโ€™re spread from California to Latvia and weโ€™ve got you covered if you prefer to work from a coworking space.
  • Salary: Annual salary at $147,705-$184,631 (depending on experience)
  • Equity: ~ย at 0.35% (depending on experience and start date)
  • Vacation: 4 weeks of paid time off each year
  • Parental Leave: 4 weeks paid by company
  • Equipment: We provide all the tech you need to work successfully.
  • Summits: We try to bring everyone together at least twice a year
  • Pension*: 401k with 6% company matching
  • Health Insurance*: Paid by company for you and dependents

* Availability may depend on your location and our current administrative capabilities there.

How we work

We use an adapted version ofย Basecamp's Shape Upย approach, which for us means:

  • We work in cycles of 6 weeks of focused work and 2 weeks of cool down.
  • We work in product teams, where each team owns the features and execution of certain product areas.
  • Each team owns creating "idea pitches" for upcoming cycles, and moving their product ideas along.
  • Each 6 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped for each team, each having very specific and well defined requirements.
  • During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.

As an Engineering Manager at Whimsical, you'll be contributing by ensuring the well-being of the Engineering team and making sure that any blockers are removed efficiently and problems are being solved. And being a small company means that on rare occasions you may have to roll up your sleeves and help with some code.

In addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally pitch in and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.

Our primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.

But we also believe in spending quality time together, which is why we try to bring everyone from around the world together at least twice a year for what we call "Whimsical Summits". At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart. The ongoing global pandemic has prevented us from doing this for the last two years, but we are back to this mode of operation now.

About Whimsical

Whimsical was founded in 2017 by Kaspars Dancis and Steve Schoeffel to help teams be more effective in the distributed and fully digital work environment.

Whimsical's product is expressive, fast, and delightful. We believe that software should spark joy, not dread.

We are a remote-first company and big proponents of remote work because it democratizes the opportunities for people everywhere.

Our operating philosophy is based on set of core principles, such as:

  • Sustainability: We don't believe in growth at all costs. Growth is a fundamental part of a healthy existence but we want it to be in balance with sustainability and bounded by ethical behavior. We strive to work calm, 40-hour work weeks. ย Whimsical is also committed to doing our part towards sustainable future for the planet.
  • Craftsmanship: We care deeply about our work. We are specialists, eager learners, and persistent in our pursuit of quality work. We're patient and committed because building great things takes time.
  • Long-term focus: We're building Whimsical for the long-haul, not a quick exit. We avoid shortcuts and consider every key decision from a 10+ year perspective.
  • Partnership Mindset: Weโ€™ve built the company around the idea that everybody who joins us should feel like they are partners in the business. Time is precious and we want Whimsical to be the place where people invest their time rather than sell it. Our equity offers are 100% transparent and above market average. We also pay everyone at the same level the same salary, no matter where they live.

Apply for this job

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!

When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to pay to buy equipment which they then pay you back for later. Also never pay for trainings you have to do. Those are scams! NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! Posts that link to pages with "how to work online" are also scams. Don't use them or pay for them. Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. \nDo you have coding experience, but prefer people to code?\n\nWe are looking for lead support engineer who can provide excellent customer support to our diverse customer base.  We're bringing the transportation industry into the 21st century using mobile software. We're a small, distributed team that creates and runs SaaS products for trucking fleets and mobile workforces. As a startup, we live and breathe open source, http, Amazon web services, functional programming, etc. Our customers run our mobile products on iOS and Android and server-side they tend to work in Windows Server. Your challenge will be to bridge these worlds.\n\nWhat we offer:\n\n\n* You'll be able to work from the comfort of your own home, or our office in Greenville, SC.\n\n* You will learn something almost every day. If you've ever wanted to read and touch Erlang or Clojure code, here's your chance!\n\n* You will work with a highly skilled team that cares about what we do and how we treat each other. We take our work seriously, and we have fun doing it.\n\n* Work/life balance is extremely important to us. We work to live, not live to work\n\n\n\n\nWhat we're looking for:  \n\n\n* Above all, a helpful spirit.\n\n* Excellent and open communication skills.  We need you to talk to our mobile users who are truck drivers as well as well as our enterprise customers' business managers and IT staff.\n\n* A technical background: you can read code easily, maybe even write some, and you aren't afraid to dig into a code base to track down an issue.\n\n* SQL/relational database skill -- this skill enables you to analyze and solve problems.  We'll also ask you to create and modify reports on occasion.\n\n* Background in software development.  Your ability to do read and understand code will also help you to analyze problems and communicate with our team of developers.\n\n* Comfort with a command line -- rails console experience is a plus.\n\n* Firm grasp of web and mobile technology.\n\n* Experience with github and open source software.\n\n* Experience with trucking dispatch software and/or operations.\n\n\n\n\nYou will be the primary point of contact for all of our customers and we'll depend on you to provide a excellent support experience for each of them.  You will handle most support issues to full resolution; some you'll escalate to our development team while monitoring and following up as needed until resolved. As Customer Champion, you'll constantly look for ways to improve our support processes and tools as our company grows.\n\nThe kinds of support you'll provide will be many and varied: helping a truck driver reset a password, resolving billing questions and issues, brainstorming with a customer on creative ways to use our platform, bug tracking and QA for our mobile and web apps, helping our customers' developers troubleshoot their web services, creating robust custom reports using SQL, sales support for potential customers, spelunking through log files to track down a bug, updating and deploying configuration changes using Git and Heroku, writing and executing Ruby scripts, troubleshooting FTP issues, patiently explaining to a frustrated user how to change a setting on his iPhone, writing concise documentation, submitting and tracking bug reports and feature requests, and plenty more. \n\nThe ideal candidate will find satisfaction in the interesting, technical tasks as well as the more routine or mundane ones, and provide excellent support tailored to the user's technical ability (or lack thereof). You're great at reading between the lines, seeing underlying issues and common threads between issues, and finding creative solutions and workarounds to unique problems. You're extremely comfortable working and communicating directly with developers technical teams. You're empathetic, patient, and you take ownership of issues in a way that instills confidence in customers.  \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Engineer, Customer Support, Executive, Amazon, Clojure, Erlang, Git, Ruby, Mobile, Android, Sales and SaaS jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n
