Description

Whimsicalย is a B2B SaaS company on a mission to make collaboration more enjoyable and productive by building an all-in-one collaboration hub. We are passionate about user experience, interconnectedness of tools and building software that feels like magic.

Weโ€™re now looking for a mid-level Front-end Product Developer to help move our vision forward primarily in ClojureScript!

You will be working in one of our product teams, alongside a PM, Designer, and other Developers

While we would have your back on everything to get you started, we are looking for someone with experience and an open mind for dealing with code, products, users, architecture, and UI.

A growth mindset is important to us, we imagine you have basic knowledge of Clojurescript and a healthy motivation to learn and grow, not only within Clojurescript but also in product, users, and business knowledge.

Our front-end stack is Cljs, Reframe, and Reagent, among others. Our back-end stack is Clojure, Postgres, Redis, ECS, and is AWS based.

Day-to-day work

At Whimsical you can expect your day-to-day to include:

  • Scoping, understanding, and implementing features:ย Your primary task would be to work with other teammates to figure out the bestย way to take a Shape Up pitch from idea to deployment within the cycle.
  • Support our customers:ย We have awesome customers, and supporting them often includes getting some help from the person that implemented the particular feature a customer is having issues with.
  • Support the team:ย Review pull requests, refactor code, help with both technical and non-technical issues, and in general help each of us end the day better than when we woke up.
  • Potentially taking on-call duties in your time zone:ย We try to take advantage of the fact that we're a small, geographically distributed team by delegating the first-responder duties to the people who are awake at that particular moment.

Indicators that this could be a good role for you

  • You feel that our philosophy resonates with you and can see it guiding your decisions while at Whimsical.
  • You have 2-5 years of front-end development experience
  • You feel excited about building tools that help others seamlessly collaborate and think together
  • You have experienceย building complex interactive web applications
  • You have used ClojureScript before and know your way around it
  • You have a solid knowledge of modern JavaScript and React (Bonus: Reagent/re-frame)
  • You are capable of effectively working with APIs and basic data structures (arrays, stacks, queues)
  • You have knowledge of measuring, analyzing, and fixing performance problems
  • You're able to work autonomously and stay self-motivated. (Bonus: previous experience working on a remote team)
  • You are fluent in English

Requirements

  • To ensure the best collaboration and synergy with the rest of the team, weโ€™re looking for someone based in
    • European Union ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ
    • United Kingdom ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง
  • Relevant work experience and track record
  • Submitted resume
  • Thoughtful, thorough responses to all the application questions.

Benefits

  • 100% Remote:ย Our team is spread across North America, Europe and Oceania, and weโ€™ve got you covered if you prefer to work from a coworking space.
  • Salary:ย Annual salary at $94,000 - $118,000, based on experience
  • Vacation: 6 weeks of paid time off each year
  • Parental Leave: 16 weeks paid by company
  • Equipment:ย We provide all the tech you need to work successfully
  • Summits: We try to bring everyone together at least twice a year, our next summit will be in Riga in July 2023

How we work

We use an adapted version ofย Basecamp's Shape Upย approach, which for us means:

  • We work in cycles of 5 weeks of focused work and 1 week of cool down.
  • Each cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped, each having very specific and well defined requirements in addition to engineering sustainability work, and bugs.
  • During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, or personal projects facilitated using our professional growth framework.
  • Each of us can create an "idea pitch" for an upcoming cycle, and move our ideas along to eventually transform into bets and product features.

As a front-end product developer at Whimsical, you will be helping to shape both the visual presentation and user experience at Whimsical by working on our collaboration tools using Canvas, improving our custom text-editor, and contributing to other user-facing features. Youโ€™ll be responsible for continually delighting our users with best-in-class thinking tools.

In addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally roll up our sleeves and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.

Our primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.

But we also believe in spending quality time together, which is why we try to bring everyone from around the world together at least twice a year for what we call "Whimsical Summits". At Summits, we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart.

Entry Challenge

In Whimsical we care deeply about spending our time on things that matter, which is why we have created this small entry task that we ask all candidates to complete and submit with their application.

This will allow us to treat every application with the attention and respect it deserves.

For this assignment, we ask that you recreate our Whimsical logo in pure HTML/CSS, without using any images. Your submission should look like the image seen below.

Whimsical logo

  • You can choose any online code editor or IDE/ framework you want, points are given for using vanilla CSS or SASS.
  • If you want to impress us, you can also add an animation to the logo on hover, or some other creative things that show off your CSS skills.
  • Try to make it look like the original logo as much as possible.

Once you have created the logo, please attach a link to your result in your application, and make sure we can view it by clicking the link, we would rather not have to install or compile different things in order to view your finished result.

About Whimsical

Whimsical was founded in 2017 by Kaspars Dancis and Steve Schoeffel to help people think and collaborate in the digital-first work environment.

Whimsical's product is expressive, fast, and delightful. We believe that software should spark joy, not dread.

We are a remote-first company and big proponents of remote work because it democratizes the opportunities for people everywhere.

Our operating philosophy is based on set of core principles, such as:

  • Sustainability:ย We don't believe in growth at all costs. Growth is a fundamental part of a healthy existence but we want it to be in balance with sustainability and bounded by ethical behavior. We strive to work calm, 40-hour work weeks. Whimsical is also committed to doing our part towardsย sustainable future for the planet.
  • Craftsmanship:ย We care deeply about our work. We are specialists, eager learners, and persistent in our pursuit of quality work. We're patient and committed because building great things takes time.
  • Long-term focus:ย We're building Whimsical for the long-haul, not a quick exit. We avoid shortcuts and consider every key decision from a 10+ year perspective.
  • Partnership Mindset:ย Weโ€™ve built the company around the idea that everybody who joins us should feel like they are partners in the business. Time is precious and we want Whimsical to be the place where people invest their time rather than sell it. Our equity offers are 100% transparent and above market average. We also pay everyone at the same level the same salary, no matter where they live.

Weโ€™re now looking for a DevOps Engineer to help move that vision forward!

We understand that DevOps is a broad and sometimes loaded term, and while in the future we would love for this role to go in the direction of holistic DevOps, the immediate needs for this role would be:

  • Cloud Infrastructure engineering
  • Developer Productivity engineering

Day-to-day work

  • Support the team: Review pull requests, refactor code, help with both technical and non-technical issues and in general help each of us end the day better than when we woke up.
  • Taking on-call duties in your time zone: We try to take advantage of the fact that we're a small, geographically distributed team by delegating the first-responder duties to the people who are awake at that particular moment.

Our back-end stack is Clojure, Postgres, Redis, ECS, and is AWS based.

Our front-end stack is Cljs, Reframe, Reagent, among others.

Our Infra stack is Terraform, AWS, RDS, Container based deployment on ECS, GitOps for deployments, and Datadog for monitoring.

Indicators that this could be a good role for you

How we work

We use an adapted version of Basecamp's Shape Up approach, which for us means:

  • We work in cycles of 5 weeks of focused work and 1 week of cool down.
  • Each 5 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped, each having very specific and well defined requirements.
  • During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.
  • Each of us can create an "idea pitch" for an upcoming cycle, and move our ideas along.

As a DevOps Engineer at Whimsical, you'll be mainly focusing on our cloud infrastructure and helping developers be more productive, whether it be by working on automation, scripts, CI/CD setup or other aspects of productivity. And being a small company means that sometimes contributing to other areas of the product, including Back-end or Front-end shouldn't be a deal-breaker to you.

At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart. The ongoing global pandemic has prevented us from doing this for the last couple of months, but we hope to go back to this mode of operation as soon as possible.

About the role

Whimsical is a product-led company that truly values design and craftsmanship. We strive to build world-class software that is fast, elegant, and insanely polished. • Work closely with our co-founderย Steve Schoeffelย on leading design across Whimsical.
  • Drive, challenge, and develop our discovery process in partnership with the rest of the product and engineering leadership.
  • Build trust-based relationships with the members of your teams through 1:1s to facilitate effective feedback and flow of information.
  • Lead different rituals and facilitate conversations to ensure that your teams collaborate effectively.

Your first quarter at Whimsical

At the end of your first quarter at Whimsical you will:

  • Get to know our design and product process and start to impact it
  • Have a good connection with our current product designers and do weekly 1:1s with them

  • Collaborated on pitches and research for upcoming product features

Requirements

Whimsicalย is an end-to-end SaaS platform for shaping ideas. Our software enables thousands of customersโ€”from individuals to Fortune 500โ€”to think and collaborate in the new era of distributed work.

Weโ€™re now looking forย Senior Front-end Product Developersย to help move that vision forward with primarily inย ClojureScript!

  • Support the team:ย Review pull requests, refactor code, help with both technical and non-technical issues and in general help each of us end the day better than when we woke up.
  • Potentially taking on-call duties in your time zone:ย We try to take advantage of the fact that we're a small, geographically distributed team by delegating the first-responder duties to the people who are awake at that particular moment.

Our front-end stack is Cljs, Reframe, Reagent, among others.

Our back-end stack is Clojure, Postgres, Redis, ECS, and is AWS based.

Indicators that this could be a good role for you

  • You have 5+ years of front-end development experience.
  • You feel excited about building tools that help others seamlessly collaborate and think together.
  • You have experienceย building complex interactive web applications.
  • You have used ClojureScript in a production environment before, and feel comfortable using Clojure and functional programming in general to solve non-trivial problems
  • You have solid knowledge of modern JavaScript and React (Bonus: Reagent/re-frame).
  • You love chewing on the occasional geometry puzzle or have prior background in graphics programming.
  • You have experience in measuring, analyzing, and fixing performance problems.
  • You're able to work autonomously and stay self-motivated. (Bonus: previous experience working on remote team).
  • You are fluent in English.

Benefits

  • 100% Remote:ย Our team is spread across North America, Europe and Oceania, and weโ€™ve got you covered if you prefer to work from a coworking space.
  • Salary:ย Annual salary at $147โ€™000 - $184'000, based on experience
  • Equity: Depending on experience
  • Vacation: 6 weeks of paid time off each year
  • Parental Leave: 4 weeks paid by company
  • Equipment:ย We provide all the tech you need to work successfully

  • Pension*:ย 401k with 6% company matching
  • Health Insurance*: Paid by company for you and dependents

* Availability may depend on your location and our current administrative capabilities there.

  • During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.
  • Each of us can create an "idea pitch" for an upcoming cycle, and move our ideas along to eventually transform into bets and product features.

As a front-end product developer at Whimsical you will be helping to shape both the visual presentation and user experience at Whimsical by working on our collaboration tools using Canvas, improving our custom text-editor and contributing to other user facing features.

At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart.

Whimsicalย is the thinking and collaboration tool for distributed work. Our software helps thousands of customersโ€”from individuals to Fortune 500โ€”to work together more effectively.

Whimsical is expressive, fast, and delightful. We believe that software should spark joy, not dread.

Weโ€™re now looking for an experiencedย Engineering Managerย to help move that vision forward!

As an Engineering Manager, you will be managing a group of 6-8 engineers. You will ensure that they collaborate effectively, that the group has the right skills and capabilities, and that everyone in the group is excited to contribute.

What We Offer

  • 100% Remote: Weโ€™re spread from California to Latvia and weโ€™ve got you covered if you prefer to work from a coworking space.

  • Equity: ~ย at 0.35% (depending on experience and start date)
  • Vacation: 4 weeks of paid time off each year
  • Parental Leave: 4 weeks paid by company
  • Equipment: We provide all the tech you need to work successfully.
  • Summits: We try to bring everyone together at least twice a year
  • Pension*: 401k with 6% company matching
  • Health Insurance*: Paid by company for you and dependents

How we work

We use an adapted version ofย Basecamp's Shape Upย approach, which for us means:

  • We work in cycles of 6 weeks of focused work and 2 weeks of cool down.
  • We work in product teams, where each team owns the features and execution of certain product areas.
  • Each team owns creating "idea pitches" for upcoming cycles, and moving their product ideas along.
  • Each 6 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped for each team, each having very specific and well defined requirements.
  • During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.

As an Engineering Manager at Whimsical, you'll be contributing by ensuring the well-being of the Engineering team and making sure that any blockers are removed efficiently and problems are being solved. And being a small company means that on rare occasions you may have to roll up your sleeves and help with some code.

In addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally pitch in and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.

Our primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.

At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart. The ongoing global pandemic has prevented us from doing this for the last two years, but we are back to this mode of operation now.

[Whimsical](https://whimsical.com) is the thinking and collaboration tool for distributed work. Our software helps thousands of customersโ€”from individuals to Fortune 500โ€”to work together more effectively. \n\nWhimsical is expressive, fast, and delightful. We believe that software should spark joy, not dread.\n\nWeโ€™re now looking for **Senior Clojure Front-end Developers** to help move that vision forward! \n\n## Day-to-day work\n\nAt Whimsical you can expect your day-to-day to include:\n\n- Scoping, understanding, and implementing features: Your primary task would be to work with other teammates to figure out the best [way to take a Shape Up pitch from idea to deployment within the cycle](https://basecamp.com/shapeup/3.1-chapter-09).\n- Support our customers: We have awesome customers, and supporting them often includes getting some help from the person that implemented the particular feature a customer is having issues with. \n- Support the team: Review pull requests, refactor code, help with both technical and non-technical issues and in general help each of us end the day better than when we woke up.\n- Potentially taking on-call duties in your time zone: We try to take advantage of the fact that we're a small, geographically distributed team by delegating the first-responder duties to the people who are awake at that particular moment.\n\nOur front-end stack is Cljs, Reframe, Reagent, among others.\n\nOur back-end stack is Clojure, Postgres, Redis, ECS, and is AWS based.\n\n## Indicators that this could be a good role for you\n\n- You feel that our philosophy resonates with you and you can see it guiding your decisions while at Whimsical.\n- You have 5+ years of front-end development experience.\n- You feel excited about building tools that help others seamlessly collaborate and think together.\n- You have experience [building complex interactive web applications.](https://whimsical.com/blog/how-we-built-whimsical)\n- You have used ClojureScript in a production environment before, and feel comfortable using Clojure and functional programming in general to solve non-trivial problems\n- You have solid knowledge of modern JavaScript and React (Bonus: Reagent/re-frame).\n- You love chewing on the occasional geometry puzzle or have prior background in graphics programming.\n- You have experience in measuring, analyzing, and fixing performance problems.\n- You're able to work autonomously and stay self-motivated. (Bonus: previous experience working on remote team).\n- You are fluent in English.\n\n## Requirements\n\n- Due to legal and compliance reasons weโ€™re looking for someone in either - ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆNorth America - ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บEuropean Union - ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งUnited Kingdom\n\n- A resume or manually entered experience (you can choose your preference).\n- Thoughtful, thorough responses to all the application questions.\n\n## What We Offer\n\n- 100% Remote: Weโ€™re spread from California to Latvia and weโ€™ve got you covered if you prefer to work from a coworking space\n- Salary: Annual salary starting at **$134,277** (depending on experience)\n- Equity: starting at **0.13%** (depending on experience)\n- Vacation: 4 weeks of paid time off each year\n- Parental Leave: 4 weeks paid by company\n- Equipment: We provide all the tech you need to work successfully\n- Summits: We try to bring everyone together at least twice a year\n- Pension*: 401k with 6% company matching\n- Health Insurance*: Paid by company for you and dependents\n\n_* Availability may depend on your location and our current administrative capabilities there._\n\n## How we work\n\nWe use an adapted version of [Basecamp's Shape Up](https://basecamp.com/shapeup) approach, which for us means:\n\n- We work in cycles of 6 weeks of focused work and 2 weeks of cool down.\n- Each 6 week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped, each having very specific and well defined requirements.\n- During cool down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.\n- Each of us can create an "idea pitch" for an upcoming cycle, and move our ideas along.\n\nAs a front-end developer at Whimsical you will be helping to shape both the visual presentation and user experience at Whimsical by working on our collaboration tools using Canvas, improving our custom text-editor and contributing to other user facing features. Youโ€™ll be responsible for continually delighting our users with best-in-class thinking tools.\n\nIn addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally roll up our sleeves and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.\n\nOur primary mode of operation is asynchronous. We use real-time communication with great care, and only where it makes sense. We use Whimsical, email, Slack, and Zoom for our day-to-day communication.\n\nBut we also believe in spending quality time together, which is why we try to bring everyone from around the world together at least twice a year for what we call "Whimsical Summits". At Summits we focus on getting to know each other better and building bonds that help us communicate better when we're apart. Whimsical is not like most companies. We are completely independent and believe that a business should care about more than just making money. We areย [philosophy-driven](https://whimsical.com/blog/philosophy). Whimsical is remote-first - we're a small team of 12 people, spread across the globe.\n\nAt Whimsical, we're trying to do two things:\n\n1. Build world-class collaboration tools that are fast and delightful.\n2. Create a company that does good in the world and that is a joy to work at.\n\nWe believe in:\n\n-  **Sustainability**:ย We work a calm, 40-hour work week. Compensation is fair and transparent and does not depend on where in the world you live. We are committed to doing our part toย [help the environment](https://whimsical.com/blog/on-the-path-to-sustainability).\n-  **Ethics over growth and profit**:ย We don't believe in growth at all costs or that growth should be our chief goal. Growth for us is a sign that we are building things that provide value for people. Growth also means that we can deploy more of our resources toward the things that we value.\n-  **Craftsmanship**:ย We care deeply about our work. We are specialists, eager learners, and persistent in our pursuit of quality work. We're patient and committed because building great things takes time.\n-  **Long-term focus**:ย We'reย [building Whimsical for the long-haul](https://whimsical.com/blog/why-bootstrap), not a quick exit. As partners in this business, we seek to invest our time instead of selling it. We think about which decisions we will be most proud of 10+ years from now.\n\nSee ourย [Blog](https://whimsical.com/blog)ย for more insight into how Whimsical does business differently.\n\nAnd we are now looking to share the joy of working on Whimsical with aย Senior Clojure Backend Developer, our 13th teammate.\n\n**How we work**\n\nFor product work we use an adapted version ofย [Basecamp's Shape Up](https://basecamp.com/shapeup)ย approach, which for us means:\n\n- We work in cycles of 6 weeks of focused work and 2 weeks of cool-down.\n- Each 6-week work cycle sees one or more "bets" shipped, each having very specific and well-defined requirements.\n- During cool-down, each of us choose what we want to work on, be it bugs, minor features, tech debt, exploring new concepts, and more.\n- Each of us can create an "idea pitch" for an upcoming cycle, and move our ideas along.\n\nAs a back-end developer at Whimsical, you'll be contributing to all things server and infrastructure-based, be it backend code, database optimizations, managing infrastructure, or ensuring that our servers are alive and healthy. And being a small company means that sometimes contributing to Frontend and other areas of the product shouldn't be a deal-breaker to you.\n\nIn addition to Shape Up, we also occasionally roll up our sleeves and do customer support to better understand our users and their needs, regardless of our role within the company.\n\nOur primary mode of operation is asynchronous. The ongoing global pandemic has prevented us from doing this for the last couple of months, but we hope to go back to this mode of operation as soon as possible.\n\n**Day-to-day work**\n\nAt Whimsical you can expect your day-to-day to include:\n-  **Scoping, understanding, and implementing features**:ย You'd work with other teammates to figure out the bestย [way to take a Shape Up pitch from an idea to deployment within the cycle](https://basecamp.com/shapeup/3.1-chapter-09).\n-  **Support our customers**:ย We have awesome customers, and supporting them often includes getting some help from the person that implemented the particular feature a customer is having issues with.\n-  **Support the team**:ย Review pull requests, refactor code, help with both technical and non-technical issues, and in general help each of us end the day better than when we woke up.\n-  **Taking on-call duties in your time zone**:ย We try to take advantage of the fact that we're a small, geographically distributed team by delegating the first-responder duties to the people who are awake at that particular moment.\n\n**Indicators that this could be a good role for you:**\n- You feel that our philosophy resonates with you and you can see it guiding your decisions while at Whimsical.\n- You have 5+ years of backend development experience.\n- You have experienceย [building and maintaining complex systems.](https://whimsical.com/blog/how-we-built-whimsical)\n- You feel comfortable using Clojure and functional programming in general to solve non-trivial problems (Bonus: you've used Clojure in a production environment before).\n- You have previous experience running systems in the cloud (Bonus: specific experience with AWS)\n- You have previous experience with running production workloads in containers (Bonus: specific experience with AWS ECS)\n- You have experience in measuring, analyzing, and fixing performance problems in a distributed environment.\n- You're able to work autonomously and stay self-motivated. (Bonus: previous experience working in a remote team).\n- You are fluent in English.\n\n### Requirements\n- We're currently looking for somebody with sufficient overlap to our existing team, so you'd have to be living in US/Canada/Europe, between Mountain Time/-6 UTC and Central European Time/+1 UTC. (We will still review applicants outside of these time zones in case we have need of developers in other time zones in the future.)\n- A resume or manually entered experience (you can choose your preference).\n- Thoughtful, thorough responses to all the application questions.\n\n### Benefits\n- 100% remote team\n- Equity (depending on experience)\n- Fully paid health insurance*\n- 4 weeks of paid time off per year\n- 4 weeks of paid parental leave\n- 401k matching*\n- The equipment you need to work successfully, including a computer, peripherals, co-working, etc.\n\n* Availability may depend on your location and our current administrative capabilities there.\n \n\nPlease mention the words **DEMAND SHAFT AUNT** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi4xNDY=).
