Want to improve Developer Experiences? Are you into Kubernetes, AWS and Cloud Native? Hungry for a high autonomy and room for self-development? This job may be for you.

Full-time ยท 100% Remote team ยท HQ in Belgium ยท Within +/- 4 hours of GMTย

ย

What does the job look like?

Together with your other colleagues in the Experts Circle (more on this structure here), you lead in shaping and delivering what we call "opinionated expertise" around SaaS architectures, DevOps and cloud platforms like AWS and Azure. Youโ€™ll be working closely with our (future and existing) customers' technical leads, developers and architects. Furthermore your expertise is fed by the research you do, the customer challenges you explore and the solutions you provide, prototype and roll-out. You help shape the developer-platform blueprint that we have, called our โ€˜Reference Solutionโ€™, which is based on AWS/Azure services, Kubernetes and a bunch of open source software.

Existing customers depend on you for sparring, for help with designing and building new services and learning about DevOps and Cloud Native concepts and best practices. Sales will rely on you to help out with finding the right path to a solution, to help make plans and to onboard new SaaS customers. The world will learn from you through workshops and other content.

Depending on your specific skills, expertise and growth ambitions, you will do any combination of the following (we'll figure that out with you):

  • Create Statements-of-Work and Prepare work backlogs for new projects

  • Do Proof-of-Concepts, research new platform features and explore exotic use cases for our Reference Solution

  • Design and shape our Reference Solution on a product management level

  • Create a roadmap for the team on both technical and strategic levels

  • Do developer-oriented Kubernetes Workshops, do sparring sessions with developers, guide and support workload migrations

  • Help debug non-urgent, complex workload issues, and respond to advanced support questions

  • Help in project planning and guarding technical context within projects

  • Perform cost optimisation reviews (AWS RIโ€™s, savings plans, sizing and resources allocation, etc.) to maximise cost savings for our customersโ€™ cloud resources

  • Act as a pre-sales engineer in commercial conversations with customers along with our sales team

  • Participate in the on-call rotation involving all technical team members. We rotate weekly with a primary-secondary rotation, addressing production issues and 24/7 escalations. At the moment this is organised in a team of 6 colleagues, thus requires you to be on-call 2 out of 6 weeks.

Skills and expertise

  • You have a consultative/guiding/curious nature

  • You need to be able to figure out and understand the real WHY behind the needs and tech, and propose the best path forward

  • Being able to critically analyse customers requirements and requests to propose the best path forward according to cloud-native standards and best practices

  • Be opinionated on how to do cloud and DevOps things in a SaaS context, but be open to new/different ideas and be able to adjust accordingly

  • Have great writing and communication skills and the ability to deliver your expertise and solutions in clear ways

  • AWS experience is a requirement, Azure knowledge is a bonus

  • Kubernetes experience is a must, specifically conceptual understanding of Kubernetes, its use cases, and operating workloads on it

  • Experience in consulting or (solutions, application, cloud) architecting is a bonus

  • The more experience you have in any category that we are active in, the better. This is anything from DevOps practices, (SaaS) cloud and application architectures, containerisation, application and data migrations, etc

  • Having advanced knowledge in one or more of these areas: security, CI/CD, observability, DR/BC, FinOps, database performance optimisation is definitely a plus

  • Having an AWS certification, a CNCF certification or any other relevant Cloud/DevOps certification is a plus

About you

  • Respect, honesty and transparency are important values to us

  • Excellent writing skills, both for documents and in communication

  • Take responsibility, personal leadership and ownership in the roles and tasks you carryย

  • Open mindset and willing to give AND receive feedback

  • A mindset of continuous improvement: for yourself as a person, for the things we do and figure out and for the team you work in

Compensation and benefits

For this role we're looking at a yearly compensation of between โ‚ฌ 60K and โ‚ฌ 95K, depending on your experience, seniority and location of living. This is the budget if we hire you through a contractor-agreement. Depending on where you live, we can also hire you on our payroll in which case we will work out an equivalent gross salary with benefits.

Check out ourย hiring pageย for more information on how we determine compensation.

What else do we offer you?

So much! 30 days of vacation, remote working, flexible work-times, personal development through our resident personal coach, conference budget and so on. Too much to list here. Check out theย hiring pageย for details.

Note: we don't provide visa sponsorships and relocations.

Want do know more?

An increasing number of dev teams in SaaS companies are relying on Skyscrapers. To scale along our Expert Circle is on the look-out for a remote DevOps Solution Architect to join them.

  • Perform cost optimisation reviews to maximise cost savings for our customersโ€™ cloud resources
  • Act as a pre-sales engineer in commercial conversations with customers along with our sales team
  • From time-to-time (every so many weeks) participate in a (low incident) on-call rotation

Skills and expertise we think we need

  • You have a consultative/guiding/curious nature
  • You need to be able to figure out and understand the real WHY behind the needs and tech, and propose the best path forward
  • Being able to critically analyse customers requirements and requests to propose the best path forward according to cloud-native standards and best practices
  • Be opinionated on how to do cloud and DevOps things in a SaaS context, but be open to new/different ideas and be able to adjust accordingly
  • Have great writing and communication skills and the ability to deliver your expertise and solutions in clear ways
  • AWS experience is a requirement. Azure knowledge is a bonus
  • Having advanced knowledge in one or more of these areas (security, CI/CD, observability, DR/BC, FinOps, database performance optimisation)
  • Having an AWS certification, a CNCF certification or any other relevant Cloud/DevOps certification is a plus

About you

  • Within 4 hours of GMT

  • Respect, honesty and transparency are important values to us

  • A mindset of continuous improvement: for yourself as a person, for the things we do and figure out and for the team you work in

  • Open mindset and willing to give AND receive feedback

About Gruntwork

Gruntwork aims to improve humanity's most important invention: Software. Our focus today is on creating a DevOps UX that software engineers actually enjoy, which we do by creating building blocks that make launching in the cloud 10x better/faster/easier. We work with AWS, K8s, Terraform, Terragrunt, Terratest, Go, Typescript, and React, and introduce new tech as needed. Weโ€™re a small team (~20 people), but our clients include Toyota, Adobe, TicketMaster, Verizon, and hundreds of startups.

We are profitable, self-funded (no investors, no debt), and pay salaries, equity, and bonuses according to transparent formulas. We are 100% remote, with 2/3 of our team in the USA and 1/3 in Europe. We plan company-wide in-person meetups every few months and are known world-wide for both DevOps thought leadership and our popular open source tools, Terragrunt and Terratest.

Our measure of a successful Grunt is (1) think like an owner, (2) make impact, (3) communicate effectively, (4) be a good person. If this sounds like you, we're hiring!

About The Role

Our infrastructure as code library and platform team delivers an end-to-end, best-practices infrastructure on AWS in just days, all as a product. In this role, youโ€™ll collaborate with other senior-level engineers to define the next generation of AWS and DevOps best practices, codify them for use by thousands of engineers, and design a next-level experience for implementing, operating and understanding them.

What You'll Work On

  • Build a better DevOps experience.ย We have a unique product that generates complete, multi-account AWS architectures for Terraform and Terragrunt in just a few hours using a collection of internal Golang tools. Help us take this to the next level by using that product to deliver prod architectures directly to customers, and then leveraging their feedback for improvements. Better yet, help us get to the point where the entire experience is completely automated or self-service.
  • Codify AWS and Terraform best practices.ย Customers look to Gruntwork to share the best way to launch on AWS. Discover AWS and Terraform best practices, and then codify them as repeatable patterns that Gruntwork customers can pull off the shelf.
  • Integrate with the Gruntwork platform.ย Integrate your product work with our company-wide platform, which consists of a REST API (Next.js/Typescript), a web-based single-page app (Next.js/React/Typescript, Tailwind), and a first-class CLI tool (Go).
  • Build out the Infrastructure as Code Library.ย Create and maintain reusable infrastructure modules for a variety of infrastructure (e.g., EKS, ECS, RDS, VPC, Lambda, EC2, S3, ElastiCache, etc.), using a variety of tools (e.g., Terraform, Go, Python, Bash, Docker, Packer, etc.) on AWS.
  • Contribute to open source.ย Contribute to our open source projects as needed, including Terragrunt, Terratest, cloud-nuke, bash-commons, and more.
  • Train and mentor.ย Play to your strengths and areas of expertise by not only writing code and working on the product but also by sharing knowledge and mentoring both other team members and our customers in those areas.
  • Support customers.ย Gruntwork is a small, distributed, self-funded, profitable startup, so we'll ask you to provide a limited amount of support to enable learning directly from customers about how we can improve and continue achieving our vision of making it easier to understand, build, and deploy software.

Your Ideal Background

You should meet some of these requirements, but you don't need to meet all of them. As a company, we look for people who can leverage their existing skills to make significant impact in the near term. As an individual, you are likely looking for a growth opportunity, a core part of which is building new skills.

  • You know how to write code across the stack and have experience in one or more of the following: Go, C++, Python, Typescript, Bash, React, Next.js
  • You have production-level experience with AWS.
  • You have expertise in one or more of the following: Kubernetes (any managed offering, preferably EKS), ECS<, EC2, Lambda / Serverless, API Gateway, RDS, S3, AWS Config, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon GuardDuty, IAM, VPC, VPN.
  • You have worked with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools like CloudFormation, CDK, or Pulumi in prod.
  • You have experience achieving compliance and going through audits (e.g., SOC2, HIPAA, vendor, etc).
  • You have a strong background in software engineering.
  • You have strong communication skills in English and are comfortable engaging with external customers.

Your Ideal Values

  • You have a passion for imparting best practices to other developers.
  • But you would rather invest the time to automate a problem than do the same work again.
  • You have a passion for learning (new technologies and languages specifically).
  • But you are motivated most by making impact.
  • You are inspired by our values (https://gruntwork.io/about/#our-values).

Compatible Time Zones

You'll be working with a team in theย US time zones, so you can be located in almost any country as long as your time zone is no further west than Los Angeles (GMT-8/GMT-7) and no further east than New York (GMT-5/GMT-4). We've found that when everyone on the team is located in similar time zones, it's easier to collaborate and there's much less pressure to stay up late or get up early, so this is a hard constraint, even if you're willing to work hours different from your current time zone.

Benefits

Our benefits reflect our values. We believe compensation should be fair, transparent, and generous. We hire Grunts in many countries, so some details may vary.

  • Location Independent, Above-Market Salary.ย To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all salaries using formulas. The formula factors in your title and uses a multiplier to produce a result that's above market for that title. Our salaries are location independent.
  • Profit-Sharing Bonus.ย We set aside a pot of money at the end of each year based on profits and distribute bonuses according to a formula that uses as inputs your level within the company and the length of your tenure at the company.
  • Hardware Budget.ย We'll buy you a brand new 16" Apple MacBook Pro (or other computer of your choosing of equivalent value) upon joining. It will be owned by you, not the company.
  • Personal Budget.ย We'll give you a personal budget of $1,000 USD per month to spend on your workspace (e.g., a co-working space), health (e.g., gym, yoga), time (e.g., babysitter), and/or learning (e.g., books, courses).
  • Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance.ย We offer a range of high-quality plans with a large portion paid by the company. For countries other than the US, this includes extra coverage on top of your statutory insurance.

In addition to the global benefits listed above, we have some US-specific benefits as well:

  • FSA and HSAs.ย We don't contribute to these accounts, but we do offer them as an option.
  • 401(k).ย We contribute a portion of your salary to your 401(k).
  • Disability insurance.ย If you get disabled, we have a policy that will pay out a portion of your salary.

Life First, Then Work

We believe in planning our work around our lives, not the other way around. To help achieve that we offer:

  • Remote workย that lets you control your hours and physical location.
  • Normal working hoursย that usually amount to not more than ~40h per week, and no working on weekends or holidays.
  • Deliberate project planningย that takes into account the time zone of all team members.
  • A minimum vacation policyย where you must takeย at leastย 4 weeks per year away from work.
  • No one carrying a pagerย and no on-call rotation. We enable this by only offering support contracts with SLAs of responses on business days / hours only.

ย

What is the job?

As a DevOps Engineer at RDX Works, you will lovingly maintain our (your!) virtual infrastructure, while supporting the needs of our different stakeholders, which range from a collection of community node runners to developers and SDETs.

You will begin in familiar territory, performing care and feeding for dozens of virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters while gathering performance data and tuning for the CPU/memory/disk sweet spot which best balances performance and cost.

Youโ€™ll participate in the continuous improvement of our current monitoring and alerting system so that we know when things are going awry and can take action.

After you have a handle on how to keep things running smoothly, as part of the DevOps team you will engage with members of the different developer teams and node runners, always devising best practices for running Radix nodes and other RDX applications on a variety of cloud platforms.

You will participate in our on-call rotation process, to ensure that someone from RDX is always available to investigate a disruption in service. You will respond to alerts and track them to resolution, while learning from incidents and feeding suggestions back to our internal DevOps, SDET, and developer teams, and improving our internal operational rulebook.

What are we looking for?

  • You have maintained production systems on virtual infrastructure, and you possess a healthy collection of war stories from past disasters.
  • You have a wealth of knowledge about Docker which you never get to use at parties.
  • Youโ€™re handy with an assortment of scripting languages, ideally Python or Bash.
  • You have a deep-seated need to automate things. The idea of doing a repeatable process manually is abhorrent to you.
  • Youโ€™re patient when dealing with others. Youโ€™re a good listener, and happy to be a teacher when needed.
  • You are a tenacious sleuth, able to persistently research and reason about difficult-to-reproduce problems until you have brought them to a satisfactory resolution.

What do you need?

  • Significant experience in a DevOps role
  • Production experience with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, and Azure (We use AWS)
  • Strong familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Familiar with agile processes
  • Experience working with observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana Stack
  • Hands on experience with a scripting language
  • Comfortable with at least one infrastructure-as-code tool, such as Ansible and Terraform
  • Comfortable configuring and managing at least one popular Linux distribution.

Things That Will Really Help You Stand Out

  • Proven history of managing clustered/distributed environments
  • Proven history of node running at scale for any blockchain/distributed ledger
  • Have experience with Kubernetes
  • Chaos engineering is not alien to you

Who are we?ย

At RDX Works, we're a team of like-minded thinkers who have long been convinced that we're living in the earliest stages of a global financial revolution. This revolution is being fuelled by decentralized finance (or DeFi for short), which is enabling an assortment of pioneering developers and entrepreneurs to re-invent almost every financial product that is currently traded and invested in traditional markets, without requiring central authorities or siloed infrastructure. DeFi has captured a great deal of attention and investment in the crypto-aware niche, growing assets under management from $1 billion to over $200 billion in a few years. Impressive as its growth has been, its current market size isn't even a rounding error on the over $400 trillion held in traditional finance. We're focused on what it will take to go from billions to trillions.

RDX went back to first principles to come up with the right technical solutionโ€”the first layer-one protocol built specifically for mainstream DeFiโ€”and we have already tested out at over 1 million transactions per second. We're keenly aware that the need for an infinitely scalable platform is only one prerequisite among many for mass adoption, and we're also blazing new ground in the areas of purpose-built developer tools, user experiences, and regulatory integration.

We have forged a path deep into the future of what distributed ledger technology is going to look like and we need you to come and be part of the team that is making that happen right now.

If this job sounds like it was made for you, then please apply directly via the link or if you donโ€™t have an up-to-date CV to apply with, please contactย [email protected]ย for more information.

Check out our company benefits here -ย RDX Works Benefitsย ย

Alternatively, if you feel like you donโ€™t match all of the requirements, we would love you to still apply anyway. We understand that confidence gaps and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting incredible candidates and we wouldnโ€™t want this to prevent us from meeting you; especially as we are big advocates of helping people learn & grow. This is also another reason we do not advertise salaries, we want to keep it as even a playing field as possible!ย

Here at RDX Works, we believe in being salary agnostic. This means that we pay salaries based on your expertise and what you can add to the business, aligning with London market rates; not based on your location or the economy of your country of residence.

What is this job position about?

The podcast revolution needs smart, innovative problem solvers who are quick on their feet. Do you want to help content creators and advertisers get heard amongst the vast ocean of the podcasting world? We connect these two worlds, enabling them to benefit from one another.

Our global podcast hosting network delivers more than 300 million listens per month across four continents, enabling more than 50 thousand podcast producers to get heard and create successful podcasts.

Weโ€™re looking for a talented and passionate engineer to work on our platform and products. Youโ€™ll work with our team of engineers to build, improve and maintain our global-scale podcast hosting, delivery and monetization platform.

You will learn how to build and operate a distributed system composed of large and micro services. You will continuously learn new technologies and keep up with the fast-pace of our industry, making sure that you never feel like youโ€™re stuck on old and boring projects.

Youโ€™ll be asked to organize your time, plan your work and be a team player. We expect you to take ownership of the systems you build, and that means:

  • Youโ€™re responsible for the operational health of your services. The work is not done just because the code is merged to master.
  • Youโ€™re empowered and encouraged to fix operational issues and make sure the technology powering our platform and products evolves as the industry moves forward.

What boxes do you need to tick to apply for this position?

These are the essentials:

  • You are fluent in English (both verbal and written)
  • You live in a European time zone (CET-2/CET+2)
  • You have proven, long-term experience in operating web platforms and infrastructure running on AWS
  • You are familiar with docker containers, their management and lifecycle
  • You are familiar with distributed systems observability
  • You are familiar with Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

This is what will get you some bonus points:

  • You are familiar with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Redis
  • You are familiar with Kubernetes
  • You are familiar with Terraform
  • You are familiar with Jenkins
  • You are familiar with Prometheus
  • You are familiar with ELK

What do we offer?

This is the package we offer to everyone working at Spreaker:

  • Contract: a traditional employment contract if your country of residence is Italy (where Spreaker has a local branch office), or an open-ended consulting agreement if you live in another European country. In both cases, you get the exact same benefits described below.
  • Laptop: a powerful M1 Macbook Pro to never feel you're wasting your time waiting for your computer to do what you need.
  • Work-From-Home budget: an initial โ‚ฌ1000 to buy everything you need to work from home, followed by a โ‚ฌ250 yearly budget for further upgrades.
  • Training budget: in addition to the internal training activities the company provides, you get โ‚ฌ1200 on a yearly basis to spend to improve your skills. This budget can be used for example to buy conference tickets, books, attend workshops, or even pay for English lessons.
  • Paid time off: in addition a company-chosen 2 weeks to cover for traditional holidays, each year you also get 6 additional weeks to use however you like. We encourage everyone to use them in full and enjoy their time off to recharge their batteries.
  • Flexible hours: while we look for a significant overlap in working hours to maximize team collaboration, there's no fixed "working hours" at Spreaker. Whether you need walk the dog, go to the post office or simply enjoy spending an extra hour in bed in the morning, we've got you covered.
  • Bonus policy: a yearly bonus based on company performance, adding up to an extra 10% of the yearly compensation if the expected company growth is met or exceeded.

This is a full-time, 100% remote role. Due to some reasons this role is EU/Europe only unless you are a GREAT fit. You want to know more about the bigger picture behind the hiring? Check outย this articleย and theย general hiring page.

Through passion, DevOps expertise and opinionated cloud platforms (based on Kubernetes) we accelerate anย increasing number of SaaS customers and their development teams. The typical customer size is anywhere between 2 to 40 developers. We are their trusted DevOps team and have long-term cooperations with our customers.

We work closely and on daily basis with the developers and CTO's of our customers. Customers tell us the personal and human approach in daily communications really makes a difference. Due to an increasing customer base we have more conversations to manage. To support that, we are looking to grow the Customer Success circle (more about that below) with a Cloud Support Engineer.

Are you a great technical communicator looking for a new challenge?

What does your job look like?

You build working relationships with people in your customers, like developers and technical leads. Most conversations will start with you, the liaison between them and us. They rely on you to help get their things done.

You help your contacts out with technical support questions and engage with other circles in Skyscrapers to get stuff done for your customers. You coordinate the flow of work between them and us, supported by tools like Slack, GitHub issues and Zoom calls (keep that human touch going!).

While being sensitive to their needs, situation and expectations you also pick up on larger projects, new opportunities and expectations. Together with theย Technical Account Managerย you make sure there is a plan in taking these further.

What weโ€™d love about you

  • Be an emphatic communicator and good listener
  • Well organised and able to keep multiple conversations going
  • Have a natural tendency to want to help people
  • You have a technological basis related to SaaS, web applications, DevOps, AWS/Azure/Google and/or full-stack development
  • Having anย AWS certificationย and/or aย CNCF certificationย is a plus

Like with all Skyscrapers, we expect:

  • Respect, honesty and transparency are important values to us
  • Excellent writing skills, both for documents and in communication
  • To be professional and ready to take responsibility wherever needed
  • Open mindset and willing to give AND receive feedback
  • A mindset of continuous improvement: for yourself as a person and for the team your work in

Compensation

We all say money doesnโ€™t make us happy, but it sure is something we need to get right and feel happy with. Only then can we do what we love and grow. We believe compensation should be an open discussion. Internally we are fully transparent, also on pay. Weโ€™ll be very open with you as well. We hope the same from you. That way we can explore this together. Our starting point is our current compensation model that weโ€™ll share with you.

That being said, for this role we're looking at a yearly compensation of between โ‚ฌ 25K and โ‚ฌ 65K (depending on contract type, location and level within the team).

The Customer Success Circle

The people in this circle build and maintain a working relationship with our customers and understand their context to allow us to successfully use everything Skyscrapers has to offer. You'll have have full authority over all (technical) customer interactions, relationship management (technical/operational) and customer operations.

Together with the Expert Circle and Platform Circle this circle forms what constitutes our DevOps-as-a-Service offering,ย beloved by our customers.

You can find more on the background of this structure here.

This is a full-time, 100% remote role (EU only).

The domain-specific expertise and experience around SaaS that weโ€™ve built up over the years is a key ingredient in our DevOps-as-a-Service offering. Due to an increasing customer base and more exciting SaaS projects, we are looking for help to grow the Expert Circle (more about that below).

Sounds like the right challenge to you?

What does your job look like?

In a way you could call this a Solution Architect role. But as always, we like to give it our own unique twist ๐Ÿ™ƒ.

Together with the other Experts, you lead in shaping what we call "opinionated expertise" around SaaS, DevOps and cloud topics. In addition to working with our customers' CTO's, developers and architects, this expertise is fed by the research you do, the customer challenges you explore and the solutions you provide. You help shape the cloud-platform blueprints that we have (based on Kubernetes), feed the Platform Circle with requirement and evolve best-practices.

Existing customers depend on you for sparring, for help with designing and building new services and learning about DevOps and Cloud Native topics. Sales will rely on you to help out with finding the right path to a solution, to help make plans and to onboard new SaaS customers. The world will learn from you through workshops and other content.

What weโ€™d love about you

  • Having a consultative/guiding/curious nature
  • You need to be able to figure out and understand the real WHY behind the needs and tech, and propose the best path forward
  • Be opinionated on how to do cloud and DevOps things in a SaaS context, but be open to new/different ideas and be able to adjust accordingly
  • Have good writing skills and the ability to communicate your expertise and solutions in clear ways
  • AWSย ORย Azure experience is a requirement, Google Cloud is a bonus
  • Experience in consulting or (solutions, application, cloud) architecting is a plus
  • The more experience you have in any category that we are active in, the better. This is anything from DevOps practices, (SaaS) cloud and application architectures, containerisation, application migrations, Kubernetes, etc

Like with all Skyscrapers, we expect:

Compensation

We all say money doesnโ€™t make us happy, but it sure is something we need to get right and feel happy with. Only then can we do what we love and grow. We believe compensation should be an open discussion. Internally we are fully transparent, also on pay. Weโ€™ll be very open with you as well. We hope the same from you. That way we can explore this together. Our starting point is our current compensation model that weโ€™ll share with you.

That being said, for this role we're looking at a yearly compensation of between โ‚ฌ 40K and โ‚ฌ 100K (depending on contract type, location and level within the team).

The Expert Circle

The people in this circle are focused on developing, maintaining, delivering and championing opinionated expertise around best practices, architectural patterns and DevOps that help solve customerโ€™s needs and improve their Cloud Native maturity. You'll have full authority over all (opinionated) technology, architectural and DevOps patterns and best-practices, training and workshops and presales activities.

Together with the Customer Success and Platform Circle this circle forms what constitutes our DevOps-as-a-Service offering,ย beloved by our customers.

You can find more on the background of this structure here.

Hey there! Iโ€™m Brandon Bayer, the founder and CEO of Flightcontrol. We are 4 person startup fresh out of Y Combinator thatโ€™s building something truly special. More than fundamentally changing the way most people deploy applications, weโ€™re intentionally building the most life-giving and fulfilling company possible. My cofounder Mina and I care so deeply about building a company that helps people become the fullest version of who they are and helps them thrive personally and professionally.

Flightcontrol is solving the huge gap between Heroku and AWS

Today there is a big tradeoff between Heroku (and itโ€™s derivatives) which is easy to use but very limiting and restricting, and AWS which gives you full power and control but is a nightmare to use. We solve this by providing a layer on top of a companyโ€™s own AWS account that makes it very easy to use while still letting them pop the hood and leverage the raw power of AWS directly.

The classic problem with things like Heroku is that you inevitably reach a point of scale at which you outgrow Heroku and have to undergo a time consuming and expensive migration to AWS directly. So our approach is to bring the Heroku style DX (or better!) to your own AWS account. With Heroku you have their custom layer of infrastructure between you and AWS. But with Flightcontrol, there is no custom infra โ€” itโ€™s just pure AWS and your services can scale as much as AWS can scale.

Our approach is to take the best AWS services (like Fargate and RDS), make them extremely simple and easy to use, and give you the very best in class setup possible. For example, we automatically configure Cloudfront in front of Fargate services. And since you own the infra, you can go into AWS to tweak and customize anything you need.

So far our customers are in love with the product, saying things like โ€œyouโ€™ve nailed the simplicity without sacrificing controlโ€ and โ€œthis is probably the best way Iโ€™ve ever deployed my softwareโ€.

  • Last fall we started building Flightcontrol, got accepted into the Y Combinator Winter 2022 batch, and raised a $1M preseed round.
  • We launched the second week of January and now already have 19 paying customers live in production. Most of these are companies with brownfield apps that theyโ€™ve migrated from Heroku, Render, Vercel, or their own custom AWS setups, including kubernetes.
  • In March, we grew from 11 to 19 paying customers and doubled the AWS resources weโ€™re managing for customers.
  • Here at the end of March, we just finished the Y Combinator batch and completed raising an additional $2.2M seed round.
  • We have amazing investors, including Matt Biilmann (Netlify), Doron Sherman (VP of DevRel, Cloudinary), Randall Kent (Cypress.io), Zach Holman (#9 at Github), Nader Dabit (former AWS), Brian Douglas, Swizec, and Shawn Wang (swyx).

Meet Our Current Team of 4

  • Brandon Bayer, Founder and CEO. Dayton, Ohio. You might know me as the creator of Blitz.js. Although highly technical, my strengths are product design and marketing. My superpower is simplicity. My top values that define everything I do are excellence, equality, inclusion, and freedom. Outside of work I love traveling, flying airplanes and helicopters, and rock climbing. My intention is to be the very best CEO and manager in the world. With a goal to build the best company to work for. Iโ€™m not here to be a boss. Iโ€™m here to support you and help make your dreams come true.
  • Mina Abadir, Cofounder. Toronto, Canada. Mina is the technical genius that brings our core product features to life. Heโ€™s deeply authentic and caring, loves to laugh, and greatly enjoys a good video game. His superpower is empathy.
  • Aleksandra Sikora, Lead Blitz Maintainer. Poland. She joined last fall as our first employee, mostly maintaining Blitz but has also been helping tremendously on Flightcontrol. Sheโ€™s incredibly intelligent and talented, and loves traveling, hiking, and rock climbing. She brings so much joy and life to our team!
  • Dillon Raphael, Senior Blitz Maintainer. Toronto, Canada. Dillon just joined the last week of March! He has such passion and drive to create amazing things in the world. And on top of that, heโ€™s incredibly sincere and loyal. He brings so much passion and connection to our team!
  • You?

We need an engineer with AWS devops/SRE experience to help us build our platform product

We need someone who is experienced with AWS. Ideally you have even more experience than Mina and will be able to bring tremendous value to both the design and implementation of features.

You will work alongside my cofounder Mina to develop our core platform functionality. You can see our public roadmap here. There are a ton of hard problems youโ€™ll help us solve. Our core product boils down to a very sophisticated orchestration system that integrates with many different services, currently all in AWS but weโ€™ll also be adding third-party integrations too.

Ideally you have both wide and deep AWS expertise. Or at a minimum wide with some deep experience and with ability to get deeper on anything thatโ€™s required. Itโ€™s a bonus if you already have any AWS certifications.

We use Typescript and Temporal to build all our AWS integrations. Temporal is an incredible technology that came out of Uber for managing complex backend workflows. It simplifies complexity in a similar way to how async/await simplifies promises and callbacks. We donโ€™t expect you to know Temporal โ€” weโ€™ll help you get up to speed on it as much as you need.

For Flightcontrol features, we usually use a Cloudformation stack to create the initial service, but after that we use the AWS Typescript SDK to make direct API calls for updating and changing services.

To summarize, you should have:

  • Knowledge with wide range of AWS services
  • Ability to use multiple AWS services to build complex solutions
  • Good working knowledge of security and networking best practices
  • Experience with both server and serverless infrastructure
  • Know your way through Docker
  • Know Typescript or have the desire and ability to learn Typescript
  • AWS certification is ++

What We Expect of You

  • Bring as much of your personal self to work as you are comfortable with
  • Do your very best work
  • Have a life outside work, whether itโ€™s hobbies, side projects, reading, etc. As long as you have something and work isnโ€™t all you live for
  • Complete honesty and integrity
  • Be creative and innovative
  • Be involved in our product planning, bringing your own ideas for what we should be doing and how we should be doing it.
  • Help give our customers the very best experience possible. We all help with customer support.
  • Be a leader. As one of our first employees, our future hires will look up to you and learn from you.
  • Be human. We donโ€™t expect you to be perfect. We all have a basement of bad experiences, insecurities, and anxieties. Our hope is that being part of our team is a huge beam of sunshine in your life that encourages and empowers you to overcome the challenges in the rest of your life.

This Job Is Not For You If

  • You are not interested in growing professionally or personally
  • You need or want someone to tell you exactly what to do
  • You donโ€™t want to bring any of your personal self to work. Weโ€™re actually totally ok with that, but the rest of us bring a lot of ourselves to work so that might be uncomfortable for you.
  • You arenโ€™t ok with with the company growing in team size, first slowly, but then increasing in speed over the next 1-2 years. When we enter that growth stage, youโ€™ll have to learn to give away your Legos and work on bigger and more impactful things every so many months.

Salary & Benefits

  • $145,000 USD salary
  • Generous Equity via Stock Options, as employee #3 or #4
  • Fully Remote
  • Health Insurance Fully Paid For
  • 32 Hour Work Week - More and more companies are finding that people accomplish the same amount of work in 32 hours as in 40 hours. Because it's nearly impossible to be fully productive at tech work for 8 hours every day. For most people, about 6 hours of focused work per day is the limit.
  • Minimum 4 Weeks PTO - It's critical to have good work life balance, so you must take at least 4 weeks PTO each year.
  • Unlimited Sick Leave - If you are feeling crappy, you aren't going to be doing your best work. So rest, get better, then come back energized.
  • Menstrual Leave - There's no use trying to be productive when you are suffering. Take the day(s) off as PTO, no explanation needed.
  • 2+ In-Person Company Gatherings Per Year
  • Open Source - We are passionate about open-source and encourage you to contribute on company time to anything that will benefit the company
  • Equipment - We'll make sure you have all the equipment you need to have an ergonomic, productive environment, including a standing desk and external monitors.
  • Conferences - We're a big fan of in-person conference experiences, and encourage you to speak at and attend them. We'll fully pay for you to attend 2 conferences per year.
  • Education - Budget for books or courses that are at least tangentially related to your work
