Depending on your specific skills, expertise and growth ambitions, you will do any combination of the following (we'll figure that out with you):
Create Statements-of-Work and Prepare work backlogs for new projects
Do Proof-of-Concepts, research new platform features and explore exotic use cases for our Reference Solution
Design and shape our Reference Solution on a product management level

Do developer-oriented Kubernetes Workshops, do sparring sessions with developers, guide and support workload migrations

You have a consultative/guiding/curious nature
You need to be able to figure out and understand the real WHY behind the needs and tech, and propose the best path forward
Being able to critically analyse customers requirements and requests to propose the best path forward according to cloud-native standards and best practices

Experience in consulting or (solutions, application, cloud) architecting is a bonus
The more experience you have in any category that we are active in, the better. This is anything from DevOps practices, (SaaS) cloud and application architectures, containerisation, application and data migrations, etc

About Gruntwork
Gruntwork aims to improve humanity's most important invention: Software. Our focus today is on creating a DevOps UX that software engineers actually enjoy, which we do by creating building blocks that make launching in the cloud 10x better/faster/easier. We work with AWS, K8s, Terraform, Terragrunt, Terratest, Go, Typescript, and React, and introduce new tech as needed. Weโre a small team (~20 people), but our clients include Toyota, Adobe, TicketMaster, Verizon, and hundreds of startups.
We are profitable, self-funded (no investors, no debt), and pay salaries, equity, and bonuses according to transparent formulas. We are 100% remote, with 2/3 of our team in the USA and 1/3 in Europe. We plan company-wide in-person meetups every few months and are known world-wide for both DevOps thought leadership and our popular open source tools, Terragrunt and Terratest.
Our measure of a successful Grunt is (1) think like an owner, (2) make impact, (3) communicate effectively, (4) be a good person. If this sounds like you, we're hiring!
About The Role
Our infrastructure as code library and platform team delivers an end-to-end, best-practices infrastructure on AWS in just days, all as a product. In this role, youโll collaborate with other senior-level engineers to define the next generation of AWS and DevOps best practices, codify them for use by thousands of engineers, and design a next-level experience for implementing, operating and understanding them.
What You'll Work On
Build a better DevOps experience.ย We have a unique product that generates complete, multi-account AWS architectures for Terraform and Terragrunt in just a few hours using a collection of internal Golang tools. Help us take this to the next level by using that product to deliver prod architectures directly to customers, and then leveraging their feedback for improvements. Better yet, help us get to the point where the entire experience is completely automated or self-service.
Codify AWS and Terraform best practices.ย Customers look to Gruntwork to share the best way to launch on AWS. Discover AWS and Terraform best practices, and then codify them as repeatable patterns that Gruntwork customers can pull off the shelf.
Integrate with the Gruntwork platform.ย Integrate your product work with our company-wide platform, which consists of a REST API (Next.js/Typescript), a web-based single-page app (Next.js/React/Typescript, Tailwind), and a first-class CLI tool (Go).
Build out the Infrastructure as Code Library.ย Create and maintain reusable infrastructure modules for a variety of infrastructure (e.g., EKS, ECS, RDS, VPC, Lambda, EC2, S3, ElastiCache, etc.), using a variety of tools (e.g., Terraform, Go, Python, Bash, Docker, Packer, etc.) on AWS.
Contribute to open source.ย Contribute to our open source projects as needed, including Terragrunt, Terratest, cloud-nuke, bash-commons, and more.
Train and mentor.ย Play to your strengths and areas of expertise by not only writing code and working on the product but also by sharing knowledge and mentoring both other team members and our customers in those areas.
Support customers.ย Gruntwork is a small, distributed, self-funded, profitable startup, so we'll ask you to provide a limited amount of support to enable learning directly from customers about how we can improve and continue achieving our vision of making it easier to understand, build, and deploy software.
Your Ideal Background
You should meet some of these requirements, but you don't need to meet all of them. As a company, we look for people who can leverage their existing skills to make significant impact in the near term. As an individual, you are likely looking for a growth opportunity, a core part of which is building new skills.
You know how to write code across the stack and have experience in one or more of the following: Go, C++, Python, Typescript, Bash, React, Next.js
You have production-level experience with AWS.
You have expertise in one or more of the following: Kubernetes (any managed offering, preferably EKS), ECS<, EC2, Lambda / Serverless, API Gateway, RDS, S3, AWS Config, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon GuardDuty, IAM, VPC, VPN.
You have worked with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools like CloudFormation, CDK, or Pulumi in prod.
You have experience achieving compliance and going through audits (e.g., SOC2, HIPAA, vendor, etc).
You have a strong background in software engineering.
You have strong communication skills in English and are comfortable engaging with external customers.
Your Ideal Values
You have a passion for imparting best practices to other developers.
But you would rather invest the time to automate a problem than do the same work again.
You have a passion for learning (new technologies and languages specifically).
But you are motivated most by making impact.
You are inspired by our values (https://gruntwork.io/about/#our-values).
Compatible Time Zones
You'll be working with a team in theย US time zones, so you can be located in almost any country as long as your time zone is no further west than Los Angeles (GMT-8/GMT-7) and no further east than New York (GMT-5/GMT-4). We've found that when everyone on the team is located in similar time zones, it's easier to collaborate and there's much less pressure to stay up late or get up early, so this is a hard constraint, even if you're willing to work hours different from your current time zone.
Benefits
Our benefits reflect our values. We believe compensation should be fair, transparent, and generous. We hire Grunts in many countries, so some details may vary.
Location Independent, Above-Market Salary.ย To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all salaries using formulas. The formula factors in your title and uses a multiplier to produce a result that's above market for that title. Our salaries are location independent.
Profit-Sharing Bonus.ย We set aside a pot of money at the end of each year based on profits and distribute bonuses according to a formula that uses as inputs your level within the company and the length of your tenure at the company.
Hardware Budget.ย We'll buy you a brand new 16" Apple MacBook Pro (or other computer of your choosing of equivalent value) upon joining. It will be owned by you, not the company.
Personal Budget.ย We'll give you a personal budget of $1,000 USD per month to spend on your workspace (e.g., a co-working space), health (e.g., gym, yoga), time (e.g., babysitter), and/or learning (e.g., books, courses).
Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance.ย We offer a range of high-quality plans with a large portion paid by the company. For countries other than the US, this includes extra coverage on top of your statutory insurance.
In addition to the global benefits listed above, we have some US-specific benefits as well:
FSA and HSAs.ย We don't contribute to these accounts, but we do offer them as an option.
401(k).ย We contribute a portion of your salary to your 401(k).
Disability insurance.ย If you get disabled, we have a policy that will pay out a portion of your salary.
Life First, Then Work
We believe in planning our work around our lives, not the other way around. To help achieve that we offer:
Remote workย that lets you control your hours and physical location.
Normal working hoursย that usually amount to not more than ~40h per week, and no working on weekends or holidays.
Deliberate project planningย that takes into account the time zone of all team members.
A minimum vacation policyย where you must takeย at leastย 4 weeks per year away from work.
No one carrying a pagerย and no on-call rotation. We enable this by only offering support contracts with SLAs of responses on business days / hours only.

ย
What is the job?
As a DevOps Engineer at RDX Works, you will lovingly maintain our (your!) virtual infrastructure, while supporting the needs of our different stakeholders, which range from a collection of community node runners to developers and SDETs.
You will begin in familiar territory, performing care and feeding for dozens of virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters while gathering performance data and tuning for the CPU/memory/disk sweet spot which best balances performance and cost.
Youโll participate in the continuous improvement of our current monitoring and alerting system so that we know when things are going awry and can take action.
After you have a handle on how to keep things running smoothly, as part of the DevOps team you will engage with members of the different developer teams and node runners, always devising best practices for running Radix nodes and other RDX applications on a variety of cloud platforms.
You will participate in our on-call rotation process, to ensure that someone from RDX is always available to investigate a disruption in service. You will respond to alerts and track them to resolution, while learning from incidents and feeding suggestions back to our internal DevOps, SDET, and developer teams, and improving our internal operational rulebook.
What are we looking for?
You have maintained production systems on virtual infrastructure, and you possess a healthy collection of war stories from past disasters.
You have a wealth of knowledge about Docker which you never get to use at parties.
Youโre handy with an assortment of scripting languages, ideally Python or Bash.
You have a deep-seated need to automate things. The idea of doing a repeatable process manually is abhorrent to you.
Youโre patient when dealing with others. Youโre a good listener, and happy to be a teacher when needed.
You are a tenacious sleuth, able to persistently research and reason about difficult-to-reproduce problems until you have brought them to a satisfactory resolution.
What do you need?
Significant experience in a DevOps role
Production experience with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, and Azure (We use AWS)
Strong familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes
Familiar with agile processes
Experience working with observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana Stack
Hands on experience with a scripting language
Comfortable with at least one infrastructure-as-code tool, such as Ansible and Terraform
Comfortable configuring and managing at least one popular Linux distribution.
Things That Will Really Help You Stand Out
Proven history of managing clustered/distributed environments
Proven history of node running at scale for any blockchain/distributed ledger
Have experience with Kubernetes
Chaos engineering is not alien to you
Who are we?ย
At RDX Works, we're a team of like-minded thinkers who have long been convinced that we're living in the earliest stages of a global financial revolution. This revolution is being fuelled by decentralized finance (or DeFi for short), which is enabling an assortment of pioneering developers and entrepreneurs to re-invent almost every financial product that is currently traded and invested in traditional markets, without requiring central authorities or siloed infrastructure. DeFi has captured a great deal of attention and investment in the crypto-aware niche, growing assets under management from $1 billion to over $200 billion in a few years. Impressive as its growth has been, its current market size isn't even a rounding error on the over $400 trillion held in traditional finance. We're focused on what it will take to go from billions to trillions.
RDX went back to first principles to come up with the right technical solutionโthe first layer-one protocol built specifically for mainstream DeFiโand we have already tested out at over 1 million transactions per second. We're keenly aware that the need for an infinitely scalable platform is only one prerequisite among many for mass adoption, and we're also blazing new ground in the areas of purpose-built developer tools, user experiences, and regulatory integration.
We have forged a path deep into the future of what distributed ledger technology is going to look like and we need you to come and be part of the team that is making that happen right now.
If this job sounds like it was made for you, then please apply directly via the link or if you donโt have an up-to-date CV to apply with, please contactย [email protected]ย for more information.
Alternatively, if you feel like you donโt match all of the requirements, we would love you to still apply anyway. We understand that confidence gaps and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting incredible candidates and we wouldnโt want this to prevent us from meeting you; especially as we are big advocates of helping people learn & grow. This is also another reason we do not advertise salaries, we want to keep it as even a playing field as possible!ย
Here at RDX Works, we believe in being salary agnostic. This means that we pay salaries based on your expertise and what you can add to the business, aligning with London market rates; not based on your location or the economy of your country of residence.

Through passion, DevOps expertise and opinionated cloud platforms (based on Kubernetes) we accelerate anย increasing number of SaaS customers and their development teams. The typical customer size is anywhere between 2 to 40 developers. We are their trusted DevOps team and have long-term cooperations with our customers.
We work closely and on daily basis with the developers and CTO's of our customers. Customers tell us the personal and human approach in daily communications really makes a difference. We believe compensation should be an open discussion. Internally we are fully transparent, also on pay. Weโll be very open with you as well. We hope the same from you. That way we can explore this together. Our starting point is our current compensation model that weโll share with you.
That being said, for this role we're looking at a yearly compensation of between โฌ 25K and โฌ 65K (depending on contract type, location and level within the team).

Sounds like the right challenge to you?
What does your job look like?
In a way you could call this a Solution Architect role. But as always, we like to give it our own unique twist ๐.
Together with the other Experts, you lead in shaping what we call "opinionated expertise" around SaaS, DevOps and cloud topics. In addition to working with our customers' CTO's, developers and architects, this expertise is fed by the research you do, the customer challenges you explore and the solutions you provide. You help shape the cloud-platform blueprints that we have (based on Kubernetes), feed the Platform Circle with requirement and evolve best-practices.

Hey there! Iโm Brandon Bayer, the founder and CEO of Flightcontrol. We are 4 person startup fresh out of Y Combinator thatโs building something truly special. More than fundamentally changing the way most people deploy applications, weโre intentionally building the most life-giving and fulfilling company possible. My cofounder Mina and I care so deeply about building a company that helps people become the fullest version of who they are and helps them thrive personally and professionally.
Flightcontrol is solving the huge gap between Heroku and AWS
Today there is a big tradeoff between Heroku (and itโs derivatives) which is easy to use but very limiting and restricting, and AWS which gives you full power and control but is a nightmare to use. We solve this by providing a layer on top of a companyโs own AWS account that makes it very easy to use while still letting them pop the hood and leverage the raw power of AWS directly.
The classic problem with things like Heroku is that you inevitably reach a point of scale at which you outgrow Heroku and have to undergo a time consuming and expensive migration to AWS directly. So our approach is to bring the Heroku style DX (or better!) to your own AWS account. With Heroku you have their custom layer of infrastructure between you and AWS. But with Flightcontrol, there is no custom infra โ itโs just pure AWS and your services can scale as much as AWS can scale.
Our approach is to take the best AWS services (like Fargate and RDS), make them extremely simple and easy to use, and give you the very best in class setup possible. For example, we automatically configure Cloudfront in front of Fargate services. And since you own the infra, you can go into AWS to tweak and customize anything you need.
So far our customers are in love with the product, saying things like โyouโve nailed the simplicity without sacrificing controlโ and โthis is probably the best way Iโve ever deployed my softwareโ.
Last fall we started building Flightcontrol, got accepted into the Y Combinator Winter 2022 batch, and raised a $1M preseed round.
We launched the second week of January and now already have 19 paying customers live in production. Most of these are companies with brownfield apps that theyโve migrated from Heroku, Render, Vercel, or their own custom AWS setups, including kubernetes.
In March, we grew from 11 to 19 paying customers and doubled the AWS resources weโre managing for customers.
Here at the end of March, we just finished the Y Combinator batch and completed raising an additional $2.2M seed round.
We have amazing investors, including Matt Biilmann (Netlify), Doron Sherman (VP of DevRel, Cloudinary), Randall Kent (Cypress.io), Zach Holman (#9 at Github), Nader Dabit (former AWS), Brian Douglas, Swizec, and Shawn Wang (swyx).
Meet Our Current Team of 4
Brandon Bayer, Founder and CEO. Dayton, Ohio. You might know me as the creator of Blitz.js. Although highly technical, my strengths are product design and marketing. My superpower is simplicity. My top values that define everything I do are excellence, equality, inclusion, and freedom. Outside of work I love traveling, flying airplanes and helicopters, and rock climbing. My intention is to be the very best CEO and manager in the world. With a goal to build the best company to work for. Iโm not here to be a boss. Iโm here to support you and help make your dreams come true.
Mina Abadir, Cofounder. Toronto, Canada. Mina is the technical genius that brings our core product features to life. Heโs deeply authentic and caring, loves to laugh, and greatly enjoys a good video game. His superpower is empathy.
Aleksandra Sikora, Lead Blitz Maintainer. Poland. She joined last fall as our first employee, mostly maintaining Blitz but has also been helping tremendously on Flightcontrol. Sheโs incredibly intelligent and talented, and loves traveling, hiking, and rock climbing. She brings so much joy and life to our team!
Dillon Raphael, Senior Blitz Maintainer. Toronto, Canada. Dillon just joined the last week of March! He has such passion and drive to create amazing things in the world. And on top of that, heโs incredibly sincere and loyal. He brings so much passion and connection to our team!
You?
We need an engineer with AWS devops/SRE experience to help us build our platform product
We need someone who is experienced with AWS. Ideally you have even more experience than Mina and will be able to bring tremendous value to both the design and implementation of features.
You will work alongside my cofounder Mina to develop our core platform functionality. You can see our public roadmap here. There are a ton of hard problems youโll help us solve. Our core product boils down to a very sophisticated orchestration system that integrates with many different services, currently all in AWS but weโll also be adding third-party integrations too.
Ideally you have both wide and deep AWS expertise. Or at a minimum wide with some deep experience and with ability to get deeper on anything thatโs required. Itโs a bonus if you already have any AWS certifications.
We use Typescript and Temporal to build all our AWS integrations. Temporal is an incredible technology that came out of Uber for managing complex backend workflows. It simplifies complexity in a similar way to how async/await simplifies promises and callbacks. We donโt expect you to know Temporal โ weโll help you get up to speed on it as much as you need.
For Flightcontrol features, we usually use a Cloudformation stack to create the initial service, but after that we use the AWS Typescript SDK to make direct API calls for updating and changing services.
To summarize, you should have:
Knowledge with wide range of AWS services
Ability to use multiple AWS services to build complex solutions
Good working knowledge of security and networking best practices
Experience with both server and serverless infrastructure
Know your way through Docker
Know Typescript or have the desire and ability to learn Typescript
AWS certification is ++
What We Expect of You
Bring as much of your personal self to work as you are comfortable with
Do your very best work
Have a life outside work, whether itโs hobbies, side projects, reading, etc. As long as you have something and work isnโt all you live for
Complete honesty and integrity
Be creative and innovative
Be involved in our product planning, bringing your own ideas for what we should be doing and how we should be doing it.
Help give our customers the very best experience possible. We all help with customer support.
Be a leader. As one of our first employees, our future hires will look up to you and learn from you.
Be human. We donโt expect you to be perfect. We all have a basement of bad experiences, insecurities, and anxieties. Our hope is that being part of our team is a huge beam of sunshine in your life that encourages and empowers you to overcome the challenges in the rest of your life.
This Job Is Not For You If
You are not interested in growing professionally or personally
You need or want someone to tell you exactly what to do
You donโt want to bring any of your personal self to work. Weโre actually totally ok with that, but the rest of us bring a lot of ourselves to work so that might be uncomfortable for you.
You arenโt ok with with the company growing in team size, first slowly, but then increasing in speed over the next 1-2 years. When we enter that growth stage, youโll have to learn to give away your Legos and work on bigger and more impactful things every so many months.
Salary & Benefits
$145,000 USD salary
Generous Equity via Stock Options, as employee #3 or #4
Fully Remote
Health Insurance Fully Paid For
32 Hour Work Week - More and more companies are finding that people accomplish the same amount of work in 32 hours as in 40 hours. Because it's nearly impossible to be fully productive at tech work for 8 hours every day. For most people, about 6 hours of focused work per day is the limit.
Minimum 4 Weeks PTO - It's critical to have good work life balance, so you must take at least 4 weeks PTO each year.
Unlimited Sick Leave - If you are feeling crappy, you aren't going to be doing your best work. So rest, get better, then come back energized.
Menstrual Leave - There's no use trying to be productive when you are suffering. Take the day(s) off as PTO, no explanation needed.
2+ In-Person Company Gatherings Per Year
Open Source - We are passionate about open-source and encourage you to contribute on company time to anything that will benefit the company
Equipment - We'll make sure you have all the equipment you need to have an ergonomic, productive environment, including a standing desk and external monitors.
Conferences - We're a big fan of in-person conference experiences, and encourage you to speak at and attend them. We'll fully pay for you to attend 2 conferences per year.
Education - Budget for books or courses that are at least tangentially related to your work
