Who you are:
We are currently looking to hire a Backend Engineer. The ideal candidate has proven development skills, deep experience building APIs, familiarity with various database systems (SQL, noSQL, Graph), and experience working as part of a development team in a D2C startup environment.
As part of our Tech team, you will be responsible for the development and maintenance of our products and will focus on building, iterating, and optimizing our admin environment, and other new and existing components of our digital ecosystem.
We expect the ideal candidate to take ownership of project delivery with a self-starter attitude. A collaborative work ethic and easy-going nature is a must.
You will be part of a team collaborating with different stakeholders across the company, from Science, to Research and Veterinary, to Marketing, Tech, and Design.
A native level of English both spoken and written is preferred.
Responsibilities
Design and implement server-side components of a modern web application
Actively participate in the overall application lifecycle.
Define and communicate technical requirements.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define product requirements, including project managers, backend and frontend developers, designers and others.
Write high-quality reusable code ensuring high performance.
Knowledge And Skills
Proven hands-on backend web development experience.
In-depth understanding of web development and proficient knowledge of Node.js, Javascript, Python.
Strong knowledge of API development and Service Oriented Architectures: Microservices, RESTful.
Deep experience with Git is a must.
Expertise with all aspects of the software development lifecycle, from discovery phase to delivery.
Experience with various database systems (SQL, NoSQL, graph). Proven experience with Amazon DynamoDB is a plus.
Experience creating user authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments.
Capability to integrate multiple data sources into one system.
Experience deploying to AWS cloud services: S3, Cloudfront, EC2, API Gateway.
Ability to take concepts into actionable architecture and plans.
Experience building “admin dashboard” applications is a plus.
Plus capabilities
Knowledge of front-end technologies and platforms, such as HTML5, and CSS3, React, Ionic.
Experience working in direct-to-consumer companies and brands.
Experience building backend for mobile applications.
Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks such as Cypress.
Previous experience or interest in data analysis.
Science and Medical experience in previous roles is a big plus.

We’re a little different than your average startup so we put together this FAQ.\n\nQ: Ok who are you guys?\n\nA: Stratum is comprised of some really smart security hackers who were tired of working for large companies. There are people here from MITRE, HP, Fortify, RSA, Verizon Business, Cybertrust, and others. We wanted to do the small company thing and it’s worked well for us. This is our second new product launch. Our first was ThreatSim, which was very successful and taught us many lessons.\n\nQ: What would I be working on?\n\nA: You’d be working on our data exfiltration testing platform, XFIL, which simulates data exfiltration techniques often used by hackers and helps customers identify areas for improvement in their egress controls. Let me translate that for non-security people --- remember the Target hack? They lost 70-90M credit card numbers -- hackers were able to get on Target’s network and transmit the data off for several months without getting noticed. The part where they transmit the data is referred to as “exfiltration”. Our service enables organizations’ to test their ability to identify a data breach in motion. As you can imagine it’s a capability every organization needs these days.\n\nEssentially we get to think like bad guys and help our customers improve their security. It’s an interesting space to say the least. If you ever wanted to learn more about security and cutting-edge attacks, this is the place. We simulate evil AND give our customers data that they can use to protect their organization. You will spend a lot of time thinking “if I was a bad guy I’d…” then have to pivot and think “if I was a security engineer I’d…”\n\nQ: Where is this position located?\n\nA: Ideally we would love this position to be based out of our office in Herndon, VA.
