Who you are:
We are currently looking to hire a Backend Engineer. The ideal candidate has proven development skills, deep experience building APIs, familiarity with various database systems (SQL, noSQL, Graph), and experience working as part of a development team in a D2C startup environment.
As part of our Tech team, you will be responsible for the development and maintenance of our products and will focus on building, iterating, and optimizing our admin environment, and other new and existing components of our digital ecosystem.
We expect the ideal candidate to take ownership of project delivery with a self-starter attitude. A collaborative work ethic and easy-going nature is a must.
You will be part of a team collaborating with different stakeholders across the company, from Science, to Research and Veterinary, to Marketing, Tech, and Design.
A native level of English both spoken and written is preferred.
Responsibilities
Design and implement server-side components of a modern web application
Actively participate in the overall application lifecycle.
Define and communicate technical requirements.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to define product requirements, including project managers, backend and frontend developers, designers and others.
Write high-quality reusable code ensuring high performance.
Knowledge And Skills
Proven hands-on backend web development experience.
In-depth understanding of web development and proficient knowledge of Node.js, Javascript, Python.
Strong knowledge of API development and Service Oriented Architectures: Microservices, RESTful.
Deep experience with Git is a must.
Expertise with all aspects of the software development lifecycle, from discovery phase to delivery.
Experience with various database systems (SQL, NoSQL, graph). Proven experience with Amazon DynamoDB is a plus.
Experience creating user authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments.
Capability to integrate multiple data sources into one system.
Experience deploying to AWS cloud services: S3, Cloudfront, EC2, API Gateway.
Ability to take concepts into actionable architecture and plans.
Experience building โadmin dashboardโ applications is a plus.
Plus capabilities
Knowledge of front-end technologies and platforms, such as HTML5, and CSS3, React, Ionic.
Experience working in direct-to-consumer companies and brands.
Experience building backend for mobile applications.
Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks such as Cypress.
Previous experience or interest in data analysis.
Science and Medical experience in previous roles is a big plus.

\nYour Impact\n\nThe 19-person engineering team at Help Scout is full of people dedicated to a wonderful experience for our 5,000+ customers in more than 60 countries. We’re excited to add the third full-time javascript engineer to the team, who will work on our Docs product.\n\nWe work remotely and autonomously for the most part, which is why this position requires senior-level skill and experience. We're looking for folks who write tests and are rather stubborn about quality front to back.\n\nTools We Use\n\n\n* Backbone.js, Marionette, jQuery\n\n* PHP / Java (for backend & APIs)\n\n* Node.js\n\n* MySQL and MongoDB\n\n* Github\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Role\n\n\n* You'll be part of a 3-person team that owns our Docs knowledge base product. The other two engineers work on the Java API and you’ll be responsible for the single-page app that makes up the admin interface. On a given day you’d be adding new features, writing tests and improving performance.\n\n* You’ll also work with two other full-time javascript engineers on the team to maintain and improve the standards and best practices we want to use across all Help Scout products. Our design team owns most of the html/css work and will help you make sure everything ends up being pixel perfect.\n\n* You may also end up doing some work on the Docs front-end that’s customer-facing (like docs.helpscout.net), which is just lightweight Scala templates and jQuery.\n\n* Aside from a weekly check in and bi-weekly planning meeting, you'll be able to work interruption-free. 90% of our communication happens in Slack. You can work anywhere in the world as long as you have 4+ hours of overlap time with your teammates.\n\n* Everything is secondary to the customer experience. We expect you to have a keen sense of how your code will impact the experience in terms of performance, security and usability.\n\n* You'll be working with product people that challenge you to get better every day.
