In this role, you’ll work in an agile delivery team alongside lead and senior engineers to build modern, cloud based services. The DVLA deliver wide reaching digital services to the UK public and industry. We maintain the national record of vehicles and drivers. We work with a range of industry leading solutions including serverless, Docker and Kubernetes on a modern cloud platform. \n\nWe’ve been creating serverless solutions for several years and currently build enquiry APIs, utility and application services using serverless Node.js and associated technologies. If you think this sounds like a good challenge, please get in touch. \n\nIf you’re working on the front-end you’ll be developing applications and reusable components using a combination of Ruby on Rails and React. You’ll get to build our external and internal UIs, so this is an exciting opportunity to deliver far reaching, intuitive and accessible front end systems. Ruby experience isn’t critical, if you’ve worked with an MVC framework, create single page Javascript apps or you’re familiar with the GDS UI guidelines you’ll fit right in. \n\nFor our core business services, you’ll be working with Java and SpringBoot alongside tools like OpenAPI. You don’t need to be a specialist in Java but you will need a passion for creating clean, maintainable and secure applications using an object-oriented language. \n\nAs part of our ongoing mission is to support and develop all staff within the DVLA, we will help you to achieve certification in areas such as AWS and Java, as well as giving you the freedom and support necessary to perform in your role and continuously develop your skill set. \n\nWe’re looking for hardworking and motivated people with the right experience to join and help us grow. You will be working along side our cloud infrastructure colleagues where you’ll get to collaborate and participate in cross-team events and communities. \n\nSome of the projects you could be working on in the future include: \n• New driver and vehicle services, allowing citizens to manage their licences and vehicles \n• The DVLA digital payment service that helps us collect around 6 billion pounds a year \n• The Tachograph services used to register and maintain data on all of the UKs professional drivers \n• API’s that allow car retailers to issue registration numbers and capture the registration of all new vehicle sales in the UK.\n\n\n\nResponsibilities\n\ninclude but are not limited to: \n\n• Developing software within an agile software development team \n• Ensuring good engineering practices and knowledge sharing within your team \n• Working closely with business analysts and agile delivery managers to prepare and review user stories and tasks. \n\nAbout You \n\nDo you have one or more technical passions such as Java, front-end development, security or serverless? \n\nTo be successful in this role you will need experience working as a software engineer across multiple teams and projects. You will also need experience developing software using modern technologies and tools. You will need to be comfortable in using modern CI/CD tooling. You will have a tried understanding in IT based languages such as Java, Ruby/Ruby Rails, C#, C++ or a related subject area. \n\nYou need to have a passion for modern software development technologies and standard methodologies. \n[Note: we are open to remote work but only if you can spend a minimum of one day per week in our Belfast office.]\n\nTHE ROLE\nYou’ll be the person responsible for building the front-ends to Opal, a cloud platform to create and manage Structured Documents: documents represented as data, created and managed programatically.\n\nYou'll be using JavaScript, React, HTML, and CSS to make the user experience sing. We don’t want your typical ugly enterprise app: it has to be elegant, delightful to use, and enticing during a demo.\n\nAs well as a magnificent web front-end, you’ll be working with Microsoft’s Office 365 JS API & Office Fabric to build document editing services right into the Word app.\n\nOur clients will generally be financial firms in the world’s leading financial centers, primarily New York City and London. You may need to travel occasionally, but not often.\n\nWe don’t care about prior experience in our industry (fintech); frankly we’d love it if you came from a design agency or other non-enterprise background. We want someone to build a wonderful user experience, and you can learn about the business domain while doing so.\n\nYOUR RESPONSIBILITIES\nYou’ll be doing some or all of the following:\n\n\n* working with our product manager to refine the UI/UX requirements\n\n* coding the front-end for the web and Office apps\n\n* writing some basic test packs. We won’t go overboard but we aren’t flying by the seat of our pants, either\n\n* in partnership with the CTO, the technical lead, and the rest of your team, defining and implementing standards for how we work: our agile methodology, coding standards, development tools, deployment practices, and more. This is a green field development and we want to use tomorrow’s best practices today.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHO WE WANT \nWe are looking for a smart person with initiative and good judgment, who works well with others, and who will always look to balance the urgent needs of clients with the long-term technical architecture for our product.\n\nYou need to have:\n\n\n* excellent verbal and written communication skills\n\n* an eye for good design. You won’t be getting detailed wireframes, so your role will be at least partly that of a designer\n\n* a minimum of three years’ experience using client-side web technologies with a solid knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3, preferably gained from working at a design agency or product company\n\n* experience with ReactJS and knowledge of Node JS and webpack, as well as a unit testing framework such as Jest\n\n* prior experience working in agile \n\n* a pragmatic, get-it-done approach to things developers often don’t like e.g. writing tests, updating documentation, and talking to clients\n\n* a desire to learn new things. For example, we have a Ruby on Rails API, so there is an opportunity for someone who has good front end skills to become a full stack developer.\n\n\n\n\nA degree in Comp Sci or equivalent is great, but it’s not essential. It’s most important that you have good coding & design skills.\n\nAny of these things will help you stand out:\n\n\n* opinions – preferably grounded in knowledge and experience \n\n* experience on a team that has implemented a good continuous integration strategy (or if not, an awareness of the benefits of these strategies so you can champion them within the role)\n\n* Office 365 JS API experience would be wonderful (we know it’s a bit niche)\n\n* experience with Bootstrap or similar – we’ll be using Office Fabric, a similar library from Microsoft\n\n* working with RESTful API back-end components\n\n* development of a SaaS web product \n\n* experience working within a distributed development model i.e. with people in other locations and time zones. We’ll mostly be Belfast-based, but we may use specialists in other places such as sales engineers in London and New York. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHAT WE OFFER\n\nSalary is dependent on your experience and skillset. As well as the basics - competitive pay and benefits – we offer work on a greenfield product, in a small startup-like team.
