Hey there! I’m Brandon Bayer, the founder and CEO of Flightcontrol. We are 4 person startup fresh out of Y Combinator that’s building something truly special. More than fundamentally changing the way most people deploy applications, we’re intentionally building the most life-giving and fulfilling company possible. Flightcontrol is solving the huge gap between Heroku and AWS
Today there is a big tradeoff between Heroku (and it’s derivatives) which is easy to use but very limiting and restricting, and AWS which gives you full power and control but is a nightmare to use. We solve this by providing a layer on top of a company’s own AWS account that makes it very easy to use while still letting them pop the hood and leverage the raw power of AWS directly.
The classic problem with things like Heroku is that you inevitably reach a point of scale at which you outgrow Heroku and have to undergo a time consuming and expensive migration to AWS directly. So our approach is to bring the Heroku style DX (or better!) to your own AWS account. With Heroku you have their custom layer of infrastructure between you and AWS. But with Flightcontrol, there is no custom infra — it’s just pure AWS and your services can scale as much as AWS can scale.
Our approach is to take the best AWS services (like Fargate and RDS), make them extremely simple and easy to use, and give you the very best in class setup possible. For example, we automatically configure Cloudfront in front of Fargate services. And since you own the infra, you can go into AWS to tweak and customize anything you need.
So far our customers are in love with the product, saying things like “you’ve nailed the simplicity without sacrificing control” and “this is probably the best way I’ve ever deployed my software”.
Last fall we started building Flightcontrol, got accepted into the Y Combinator Winter 2022 batch, and raised a $1M preseed round.
We launched the second week of January and now already have 19 paying customers live in production. Most of these are companies with brownfield apps that they’ve migrated from Heroku, Render, Vercel, or their own custom AWS setups, including kubernetes.
In March, we grew from 11 to 19 paying customers and doubled the AWS resources we’re managing for customers.
Here at the end of March, we just finished the Y Combinator batch and completed raising an additional $2.2M seed round.

You?
We need an engineer with AWS devops/SRE experience to help us build our platform product
We need someone who is experienced with AWS. Ideally you have even more experience than Mina and will be able to bring tremendous value to both the design and implementation of features.
You will work alongside my cofounder Mina to develop our core platform functionality. You can see our public roadmap here. There are a ton of hard problems you’ll help us solve. Our core product boils down to a very sophisticated orchestration system that integrates with many different services, currently all in AWS but we’ll also be adding third-party integrations too.
Ideally you have both wide and deep AWS expertise. Or at a minimum wide with some deep experience and with ability to get deeper on anything that’s required. It’s a bonus if you already have any AWS certifications.
We use Typescript and Temporal to build all our AWS integrations. Temporal is an incredible technology that came out of Uber for managing complex backend workflows. It simplifies complexity in a similar way to how async/await simplifies promises and callbacks. We don’t expect you to know Temporal — we’ll help you get up to speed on it as much as you need.
For Flightcontrol features, we usually use a Cloudformation stack to create the initial service, but after that we use the AWS Typescript SDK to make direct API calls for updating and changing services.

Seam builds digital and physical infrastructure to enable software developers to connect their applications with the physical devices around us
Seam builds an API for IoT devices. This lets developers unlock doors, set access codes, turn off thermostats, read sensors and more—all using a single API that works across brands and standardizes common device functions.

Overview
We are looking for software engineers, preferably proficient in Typescript. This role will involve a number of projects up and down our stack. We like people that are comfortable moving around.
Backend API
Our high-level goal is to build a device/manufacturer agnostic integration layer that connects to various devices and exposes their functionality through a simple API. This task involves integrating dozens of different IoT brands and their protocols (z-wave, zigbee, bacnet, OEM API...etc) and neatly organizing them amongst common functionality.
This is one of our client libraries. The unlock functionality presented here works the exact same way across dozen of brands.
Seam Connect
This is an embeddable UX flow that developers add to their applications. It then allows their applications' users to grant access to their devices. Seam Connect guides users through selecting their device brands, entering their credentials, and dealing with edge cases like 2FA or multi-tenant accounts. For example, Airbnb can ask their host for access to their smart locks and thermostats. This then enables Airbnb to automate guest access and save energy while the unit is unoccupied.
Client Libraries
We often ponder how to create the best developer experience possible for our customers. To that end, we're big believers in client libraries over just offering a pure HTTP API. Though that API is available and documented, our customers have told us that being able to not think about the underlying HTTP requests makes our product enjoyable to work with. Some of our customers even suggest and implement changes to our client libraries!
We primarily write Seam using Typescript. We also believe that "best DevOps is no DevOps." To that end, we're trying to use serverless to run our entire infra. Let's just say this hasn't been without its challenges :) But we're trying different things and always open to new ideas! Our primary datastore is Postgres.

Virtual Pricing Director is hiring a full-stack engineer to help implement our new legal tech web application - contributing across all aspects of our app, its data, architecture and deployment.\n\nWe’re a well-funded scaleup (no VC money) building the future of legal pricing, for small and large law firms alike. Our workflow and data management software means an end to overcharging clients, arbitrary pricing, and other bad practices that have existed for years.\n\nOur two directors are recognised world authorities in this domain, and bring a number of signed firms ready to use our software. We're off to a healthy start, busy preparing to deploy to one of the world's largest legal teams.\n\nThe work is varied, challenging, and we place equal emphasis on front and back-end. Because of the need to deliver scheduled features, fix bugs, and respond to the needs of newly onboarded firms, we’re looking for someone who relishes lots of hands-on work, contributing across the whole stack. \n\nOur app is powered by React, with Apollo Client for its GraphQL queries and mutations. It leverages Ant Design as the UI framework, upon which we build a mixture of UI components; some simple, some complex. On the back-end, we're using PostgreSQL as our RDS, TypeORM as our ORM, TypeGraphQL to define the API schema, and Apollo Server to deliver the GraphQL.\n\nBoth our front and back ends are coded in TypeScript. We believe in end-to-end testing and have therefore used Playwright to handle an automated E2E test script which runs before deployments.\n\nYou'll join us as we begin to roll out our product to some of the top law firms, and in time to help define, design and build the next two roadmapped modules, and to grow from there.\n\n\n**Upcoming projects across the team**\n\n* Building out a suite of new modules, from designing the underlying business logic and data models, to designing and implementing the application, front-ends and infrastructure\n* Standardising on common approaches that uphold modern enterprise architecture standards\n* New data visualisation and BI reporting solutions\n* Designing and implementing new APIs and data integration pipelines\n* Helping automate quality, CI/CD, and shaping a DevOps approach\n* Contributing to our development culture, methods, and tooling\n* Optionally; supporting dialogue with customers - discovery, requirements, technical solution design, implementation \n\n\n\n**We're looking for**\n\n* Someone with full-stack engineering abilities that span the application, front-end, data and infrastructure considerations\n* A good technical understanding of software engineering principles \n* Technology agnostic, and adept with TypeScript, React, Node.js, PostgreSQL and GraphQL\n* An understanding of the principles of serverless applications, preferably based around AWS\n* Proficient with SQL, and web service design\n* An interest in upholding data security principles and helping choose and implement effective application architectures\n* Ability to unpack complex requirements, to uphold security of sensitive data and to conform to best practices\n* A collaborative, adaptable, user-centred approach\n\n\n**You may also bring - or like to gain - skills around**\n\nAnt Design | TypeORM | TypeGraphQL | Apollo Client | Apollo Server | Java | CircleCI | Heroku | Auth0 | AWS | TDD | Agile | Domain-driven design (DDD) | data modelling | integration patterns\n\n**Salary and benefits**\n\n* £70,000 - £90,000 - reviewed at six months - we're keeping an open mind\n* Share scheme for formative team members (once proven value to the business)\n* 25 days holiday, plus public holidays and a day for your birthday\n* Family-friendly and flexible culture - tell us what you need\n* Personal development plan that you can shape, with budget for related training/certifications\n\n**About us**\n\nVirtual Pricing Director has developed groundbreaking software to assist law firms to understand and price their fees, be that £10k or £10m.
