\nSenior developer\n\nClosing date: Open until filled\n\nDo you love modern web technologies? Are you a team player who likes solving difficult problems together? Do you want to join one of the UK’s most exciting tech start-ups and play a key role in developing an ambitious product with a global impact?\n\nFlourish is empowering the world to visualize and tell stories with data. It enables anyone to create beautiful graphics, presentations and interactive stories without coding. Since our launch in 2018, more than 500,000 registered users have produced more than 5 million graphics, which have racked up more than ten billion views.\n\nOur customers include leading newsrooms (such as BBC and FT), major corporates (such as Goldman Sachs and Moody’s), NGOs (Amnesty, Rockefeller) plus universities all over the world.\n\nWe’re looking for a senior developer to join our team, reporting to the head of software development.\n\nThe role\n\nYou’ll be the technical lead in one of our small development teams, overseeing the creation of significant new features on the Flourish platform. Your team will:\n\n\n* Develop new features for Flourish, using modern web technologies\n\n* Maintain standards for web performance, security and accessibility\n\n* Build automated tests and improve the observability of the codebase\n\n* Pair-program and review code\n\n* Help improve the way we work and the tools we use\n\n\n\n\nThis is a thoroughly hands-on development role: most of your time will be spent working with code. But you will also mentor and manage other developers and work closely with the product team.\n\nThis role is focused on the Flourish back-end platform rather than the visualization templates, which are developed separately.\n\nAbout you\n\nYou are an experienced developer who enjoys working collaboratively and loves to learn new things. You care deeply about the quality of your work and are thoughtful about how to improve both what you’re doing and how the team works together. You’re happy to adopt existing conventions of the code base.\n\nImportantly, you’re excited by Flourish and the opportunity to make it better. You’re a friendly colleague and you work well in a close-knit team.\n\nMust-have skills\n\n\n* A deep understanding of the web platform\n\n* At least five years experience as a full-stack developer\n\n* Strong JavaScript and Node.js skills\n\n* Competence with command-line Linux and shell scripting\n\n* Good SQL skills\n\n* Be comfortable using Git for version control, and understand why clear history matters\n\n* Familiarity with working practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration and continuous delivery\n\n* Experience of agile methodologies\n\n* Awareness of security best practices for web applications\n\n\n\n\nNice-to-have skills\n\n\n* AWS (S3, EC2, IAM, etc)\n\n* PostgreSQL\n\n* Infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Puppet\n\n\n\n\nPerson attributes\n\n\n* An enthusiasm for learning and teaching\n\n* A systematic approach to solving problems\n\n* A love of the web and an interest in performance\n\n* The ability to give feedback kindly and receive feedback\n\n\n\n\nAbout us\n\n\n* \n\nOur tech stack: Some of the technologies we use include Node.js, Express; Postgres, Redis; Handlebars, Sass; AWS; Cypress; GitHub, CircleCI, Sentry. We don’t expect you to have worked with all of these, but any you have are a plus.\n\n\n* \n\nOur company: Flourish is a small team combining decades of collective experience in development, data, design, visualization and journalism/publishing. Read more about the team.\n\n\n* \n\nOur culture: We’re a friendly and supportive group that values kindness, honesty and fun. We’re open and try new things with enthusiasm. And we’re high-momentum, focused on delivering magical products that our users love. We socialise as a team at least once a month.\n\n\n* \n\nOur interview process: We make our hiring process fast and straightforward. Typically there is brief initial call and online screening test, followed by an interview designed to be rigorous but friendly and collaborative. We’ll ask you to do some pair-programming with us, to get a sense for how you communicate, but we don’t do stressful whiteboard coding.\n\n\n* \n\nOur location: We are largely a UK-based team, with a few exceptions. We used to be based in a fun office in Clerkenwell in central London. This was closed at the start of the COVID crisis, and we intend to get a new office in London in 2021, most likely in the Shoreditch area, but we do support remote working.\n\n\n\n\n\nBenefits\n\n\n* Salary from £60–80k depending on skill and experience\n\n* Remote working is welcome (the majority of our development team is remote), though after lockdown lifts, it would be a plus if you could be at our London office every few weeks for sprint planning/retros and socials\n\n* ‘20% time’ for developers on Fridays - you can choose what to work on, as long as it’s relevant to the company’s mission\n\n* Share options in a rapidly growing company\n\n* Flexible hours, and respect for work/life balance (not “startup hours”)\n\n* Lots of potential for career progression\n\n* 30 days’ annual holiday\n\n\n\n\nTo apply\n\nSend a CV, and a covering letter explaining why you’re interested in this role and how you meet the description above, to [email protected]. Please use the subject line “Software Engineer”. Got questions about the job? Feel free to email us for a chat.\n\nWe’re committed to equality and diversity in the tech industry, so we’ll be especially happy to see applications from under-represented backgrounds.\n\nSorry, but we won’t be able to sponsor visas for this role: please do not apply if you do not already have the right to work in the UK. We are not accepting applications from recruitment agencies for this role.\n\nNot right for you?\n\nPlease spread the word instead! And join our mailing list to stay posted about Flourish. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

Smartbnb is a bootstrapped company whose core product currently helps short-term rental businesses manage and automate over 60,000 properties. We are a growing team of 6 people with plans to expand rapidly by the end of 2018.\n\nWith multiple new product launches on the horizon and several more planned before the end of the year, you will be joining the company at a time of explosive growth. Your presence will have a very real impact on the companyโs value.\n\nWe are looking for a Backend Web Developer to join our tech teamโs efforts to supercharge our PHP web application. You will be working directly with Pierre-Camille, our founder, who developed the original product from scratch, as well as with all members of the tech, marketing, and success teams.\n\nOur company is fully distributed and remote. We believe and fully embrace that your best environment is wherever you - personally - feel the most productive and comfortable for day-to-day work. Nevertheless, we organise frequent meetups and retreats for the team to physically meet throughout the year. The last two trips were to Lisbon/Cascais and Paris!\n\n \n\nโญ๏ธ What you will do: โญ๏ธ\n\nโข You will be an architect: planning structural masterpieces, laying foundations, building pillars, and reinforcing walls. Maybe a statue here and thereโฆ\n\nโข You will be in charge of drastically improving multiple features for our web app, helping to developing new product lines, as well as improving and maintaining the quality of the entire codebase.\n\nโข You will be a leader in performance (logic optimisation, indexes, queries, caching), security (discovering and plugging vulnerabilities), and code health (refactoring, unit and integration testing).\n\nโข You will take charge of your own work and proactively suggest improvements across the whole backend.\n\nโข In a remote environment you will be responsible for your own time and results โ there will be no babysitting.\n\n \n\nโ What you will need to succeed: โ \n\nโข Nutcracker: you love solving engineering problems.\n\nโข Independent: you are self-motivated, take initiative, and are a strong communicator. You are results-driven and willing to learn and improve yourself.\n\nโข Technical Ninja: proficiency with PHP 7.0+, Laravel 5.2+, MySQL, Git, beanstalkd, and Memcached and/or Redis, backed by 5+ years of Backend development experience.\n\nโข Design Pattern Jedi: great knowledge of and direct experience with multiple design patterns. You have written superbly abstracted code and accompanying unit tests from scratch. You have also refactored legacy, non-testable code into something less apocalyptic.\n\nโข Caring Developer: you recognise that your code and work impact not only the customers but also the rest of the team. You conduct yourself with professionalism and respect not only in meetings but also in how you structure your code and in the documentation that you write.\n\nโข Superb English fluency: we are an international team and clear communication is vital. It goes without saying (but weโll say it anyway) that you absolutely must have the ability to participate in frequent video meetings.\n\nโข The product team is based in Europe, so at the moment we are looking for developers who are based within the same general time zones (UTCยฑ3).\n\n \n\n๐ฐ Brownie points: ๐ฐ\n\nโข You have experience with Continuous Integration using Travis, Circle, Gitlab, or Bitbucket.\n\nโข Interactive Git rebasing doesnโt sound like voodoo to you.\n\nโข Youโve used ๐ฌ๐คฏ๐ฅin Git commit messages.\n\nโข You have experience with Machine Learning either with off-the-shelf tools like Dialog Flow or - better yet - more low level using tools and platforms like Theano, Torch, and Google/AWS/Microsoft/IBM ML stacks.\n\nโข Youโve built a Node.JS backend or API.\n\nโข You see past the glossy veneer of the โmicroservicesโ buzzword and know when and how to build them.\n\n(Let us know how many ๐ฐ you deserve.)\n \n \n \n๐ What we offer: ๐\n\nโข Competitive salary, including the possibility of stock options.\n\nโข Ample paid leave, in addition to maternity and paternity leave.\n\nโข A great support structure: we are here for you.\n\nโข Flexible contract. You will work independently where you are most productive and happiest, with flexible weekday hours.\n\nโข All the resources and tools that you need to succeed\n\nโข Join a fast-growing startup and be part of the force that shapes the company in the years to come!\n \n \n \nWe are solving global short-term rental automation. \nYou are a unique full stack developer who is an expert in Javascript, HTML, and CSS. Ideally, you've worked with modern JS libraries like Backbone, Angular, or React. You'd rather write your own JS than just settle for yet another plug-in. You write tests for your Javascript when possible. You're familiar with the Node ecosystem and have heard of tools like Gulp and Webpack. You are really excited about the future of the JavaScript and are not afraid to use new features from ES2015. Implementing beautiful designs can't be done half way, and pixel perfect is something you strive for. You don't mind spending extra time tracking down an edge case CSS or Javascript bug. You know the browser, what it is capable of, and how it has evolved in recent years. You're passionate about what you do and how you do it; anything worth doing is worth doing well. You strive to write clean, modular code no matter which language you're using, and experimenting and trying new things is a normal thing for you. Git is a daily tool, and you use it in all your projects. You are comfortable and productive in at least one MVC open source framework like Ruby on Rails, Django, Grails, or similar technologies. You are not a system architect, but you have the experience to know when a task should be run in the background rather than at request time. You are not a database expert, but know enough about database design to have an opinion. You are not a security expert, but you do think about how to foil that hacker who is trying to inject some code into your forms. The command line doesn't scare you and in fact you may even prefer it over a GUI. We're a remote team, but we all try to work the same hours. You enjoy and take advantage of flexibility, and can self-motivate. Some projects include possible travel, so please take this into consideration when applying. Compensation and Perks:\n\n\n* Market rate salary\n\n* Health, Vision, Dental Insurance\n\n* Whatever computer and displays you want\n\n* Internet Reimbursement\n\n* Annual budget for career development (conferences, online courses, etc)\n\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n
