HigherEducation.com partners with many of the most recognizable names in the online education industry to help them build their programs and expand student bases with our 75M annual site visitors. We also love to use cutting edge technologies to make developer life enjoyable and more productive.\n\nWeโre looking for an experienced, hands-on hybrid role of JavaScript Engineer and data scientist to join a major initiative at a critical point in our companyโs growth. The ideal candidate (which means you, right?) will be responsible for debugging existing code bases and innovating new solutions through data science research. Other duties include enhancing & maintaining the core product, creating & maintaining the tests for various code repositories,\n\nThe position requires:\n- Possess a rock-solid background in Computer Science (minimum BS in Comp Sci or related field) or at least 5 years of development experience in a challenging, fast paced environment.\n- Demonstrated advanced proficiency in one or more of the following fields: Natural Language -\n Processing, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Recommendation Systems.\n- Server-side JavaScript (e.g. Node.js - Express, Koa, Hapi).\n- Client-side JavaScript (e.g. React, MobX, Redux).\n- Build tools (e.g. Gulp, Grunt, Browserify, Webpack).\n- Exposure to AWS or other cloud platforms a plus.\n\n\nDesired qualifications include experience with:\n- Advanced degree is a plus but you're not just an academic -- you have hands-on software engineering experience applying complex algorithms to real-world problems at scale.\n- Work effectively in agile teams; get stuff done with minimal guidance and zero BS, help others and know when to ask for help. Clearly communicate complex technical and product issues to non-technical team members, clients, etc.\n- Bonus points for experience implementing machine learning algos on GPU's or other hardware acceleration!\n\n\nWhat it's like \n\nLast year, we had a blast. We personally enjoy getting rid of legacy code & turning servers off in favor of clean, new, tested services.\n\nEach project is fairly small in scope with a large amount of flexibility and freedom to discuss & find the best architecture for the job and for the team. Usually, a single person heads up a project, collaborates with another for architecture & solutions, and eagerly looks forward to launching (rather than endlessly polishing).\n\n- Slack for conversations.\n- Asana for project tracking & deliverables.\n- Github for code collaboration.\n- DroneCI for CI & CD.\n\nBeing in a USA timezone is highly desirable.\n\n\nFor example...\n\nIn 2016 we...\n\n- Built and deployed a central platform for managing monetization across our portfolio.\n- Broke up an old monolith into smaller Docker services running on Rancher and got a solid, always-deploying CI/CD pipeline.\n- Established a lightweight Agile process to aid developer efficiency from initiative to initiative.\n- Worked with in house teams to conduct research in the frame of Recommendation Systems with a working prototype.\n\nIn 2017 we're...\n\n- Building applications to expand the business into areas of organic growth.\n- Refactoring and simplifying our micro-services ecosystem.\n- Doubling down in a robust product recommendation approach to better serve our users.\n\n\nHuman Environment\n\n- Centrally located in downtown Houston, free employee parking.\n- Coed work environment, casual dress code.\n- Cool office perks (e.g. sodas & coffee, happy hours, etc.).\n- Generous salary considerations & full benefits.\n- 6% 401k matching\n- 100% health / vision / dental for you & subsidies for the rest of your family\n- 15 vacation & sick days / yr.\n- Gym membership reimbursement up to $100/mo\n\n\nWhat We Value\n\nWe love to work as a team but office hours are flexible. Producing is more important than meeting a 9 to 5 schedule. We understand there are moments when you need to isolate yourself to concentrate so working from home is permitted and encouraged.\n\nWe like to have a good time and minimize stress with good in-office coffee, ping pong, lounge/reading time and regular happy hours. We work hard and meet realistic deadlines. What good is delivering a poor product early?\n\nWe also understand that family is important, so time-shifting (and sometimes day-shifting) is necessary to deliver for both the team & your family.\n\n \n\nPlease mention the words **WEALTH STAIRS TOSS** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi4xMDc=). This is a feature to avoid spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and see they're human.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

\nIf you’re smart, passionate about technology and enjoy solving complex technical challenges then you should apply to join our best-in-class tech team. We believe that people are our most important asset and one worth protecting. As such, we’re known for creating an enviable working culture to keep our employees smiling on a day to day basis. \n\nWe offer things such as flexible hours, remote working, fortnigtly hackathons and freedom to work on projects of individual interest to name just a few. In fact, our impressive working culture has recently earned us 1st place in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work for 2015. \n\n\nWe have two different positions.\n\n\n1. Senior Developers who would like to lead a team / projects - We envisage the split here being about 70% hands-on coding and 30% leading the team, liaising with product owners on prioritization work, attending iteration planning meetings with stakeholders, delegating tasks to dev team, and making sure we are following Lean / Agile processes correctly.\n\n\n2. Senior Developers who want to be 100% coders (non-lead) - This role will be 100% hands on working with our other Devs to code beautiful products for our customers! \n\n\n\nSome of our Current Projects: \n\nSeedy - Our custom built CMS. A hybrid, markdown based, sinatra driven CMS but with a TDD undercurrent. Content changes are no different to backend refactoring. Templates are written in a custom DSL that enforces our style guide while still supporting iterative changes and automatic deployment. Across the company people (including business teams) are now being tagged in pull requests and even writing code!\n\nAerie - We’re overhauling our data and analytics architecture. Using the latest approaches in event streaming, we are building a brand new data pipeline based on Kinesis and Redshift that will support the analysis of both structured and semi-structured data in near real-time. This will provide rapid and intuitive customer insight to our decision makers, while also providing exciting machine learning capabilities back to our core product offering.\n\nAAA - We are enhancing our new world platform. Our current focus is on security with a view to building out ‘infrastructure as code’ using tools such as AWS CloudFormation, AWS OpsWorks, Chef/Puppet and many others. Essentially, we believe a well architected system allows us to avoid unnecessary complexity and can enable individuals to generate great output.\n\nOur Tech Stack\n\n\n\n\n* Ruby\n\n* Rails \n\n* Scala \n\n* MongoDB\n\n* RabbitMQ\n\n* Puppet/Boxen\n\n* AWS \n\n* Hadoop / RedShift / Looker /Tableau\n\n* Cucumber / RSpec / Jasmine \n\n* SASS / HAML / HTML5 / CSS3 / JavaScript / CoffeeScript / jQuery\n\n\n\n\n\nThis list changes all the time, as being on the lookout for new technology trials and opportunities is part of our code. We don’t believe in limiting ourselves, or the company. If there are other tools that could get the job done better, we’re committed to exploring them.\n\nThings we believe in:\n\n\n\n\n* TDD / BDD\n\n* Continuous Delivery\n\n* Pair Programming\n\n* Build – Measure - Learn\n\n* Active participation to open source\n\n* Our business people writing code (we've not seen this anywhere else!) \n\n* Cross functional teams (Dev / QA/ Data / UX / Product owners all sitting together) \n\n* Release early and learn quickly - we release our software to production around 15 times a day on average! \n\n* Continuous learning - we look to pay for courses and conferences and actively encourage our Devs to get out and about in the community. We have even sent some of our Devs to Miami, Portugal and Barcelona for conferences recently. \n\n* Have fun! We do ruby coding challenges during lunchtimes over pizza, we have desk beers on a friday, we have several social events throughout the year, we do fortnightly hackathons, we have afterwork clubs like: UX, Data science and Robotics club, we have flexible working hours, weekly 'show n tell' sessions, and lot's more! \n\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n
