80% of the global workforce is deskless, yet just 1% of all enterprise software funding is dedicated to serving these 2.7 billion people.\n\nAt Sona, our mission is to put cutting edge technology in the hands of every deskless employee to empower them to do their best work.\n\nWeโre a rapidly growing, VC-backed B2B SaaS startup founded in the summer of 2021. We are fully remote, with overlapping โoffice hoursโ during the mornings (GMT). \n\nWe are strong believers in giving everyone the autonomy to do their best work, when and how they prefer. That means youโll have a lot of flexibility and control over how to shape your job and work life, while getting all the support you need to succeed.\n\nWe take our health and mental health seriously, believing that we can only perform to our best when we are healthy and happy. Thatโs why we work 4.5 day weeks, with a flexible half day that you can use as you choose. \n\nYou can learn more about the team and what itโs like working at Sona [here](https://www.notion.so/getsona/Working-at-Sona-4e3c00206c414d8c9eb9b7a617cdc6d7)\n\n### About the role\nWe fundamentally believe that the best products are built when small, cross functional, autonomous teams are empowered to solve business problems as they see fit. Youโll be joining a pod which owns a particular area of the product and movement between product areas is encouraged and easy.\n\nEngineers are heavily involved throughout the product development process, inputting into the why and what as well as the how.\n\n*Our stack has two main components:*\n* A backend with a GraphQL API (for communicating with the Native App) and a web frontend built using Elixir and Phoenix Live View (the PETAL stack)\n* A native mobile application built in React Native + Typescript\n\nWe think in terms of โT Shapedโ developers. This means that while all of us have some ability across the โfull stackโ, most of us have one side of the stack (e.g. Elixir or React Native) weโre stronger on and spend the bulk of our time on.\n\nWeโre passionate advocates of the Live View approach for building web applications and believe that itโs one of the biggest step changes in productivity and developer experience since Ruby on Rails.\n\nLikewise we strongly believe in the benefits of the common, typesafe Android and iOS codebase that React Native combined with Typescript and GraphQL gives us. \n\nTypically when somebody starts working with us, they have strong experience with one side of the stack and then learn the other part on the job.\n\n### How We Work\nOur [engineering principles](https://www.notion.so/getsona/Engineering-Team-Principles-b83ffe9620a645e5920529ad79928c66)give a flavour of how we like to work. Weโre a fully remote team spread across 4 countries (and growing). We have a company stand up most mornings at 10:00 UK time. We aim to have fully paid for company meetups roughly once per quarter.\n\nEverything starts with talking to customers. We like everyone in the company to regularly join either sales calls with new prospects or catch ups with existing customers\n\nWeโre a small company with a strong preference for lightweight, asynchronous processes. \n\nWithin product we work in sprints with periodic retrospectives.\n\n### Interview Process\nOur hiring process follows this pattern:\n* Initial phone screen (30 minutes) focused primarily on approach to work, career goals and your questions about Sona\n* Technical Interview (1-2 hours) take us through a piece of code you're proud of and talk about how it's architected, what worked well and what you'd do differently if you wrote it again. If you don't have a suitable piece of code, we're also happy to pay you for half a days work to do a take home task. But we understand that everyone's busy so we'd much rather use some code you've already got where possible!\n* Founder Interview (1 hour), focused on why youโre interested in Sona and your questions about the vision\n\n### Requirements\nWe love engineers who have a non nonsense approach to โgetting it shippedโ, who when given the choice between โcomplicated and shinyโ vs โget something simple in front of a userโ will always choose the latter.\n\nEverybodyโs different, but a lot of the following probably applies to you:\n* You have extensive professional experience in either React Native or Elixir\n* If your experience is in React Native youโre happy to talk about Typescript, the role of generics and when they should be used, how hooks changed how we build React Native apps and when one should consider writing custom hooks. Youโd be equally happy explaining promises and how they interact with async / await.\n* If your experience is in Elixir youโre passionate about LiveView and are comfortable talking about itโs advantages and challenges\n* You have a strong preference towards taking ownership, making sure youโre clear on what youโre doing and why and then communicating progress over awaiting instruction\n* Youโre in a country which is GMT +/- 3 and fluent communicating both verbally and in writing in English\n\n### Benefits\n* Competitive salary\n* 4.5 day standard working week\n* 37 days annual leave (25 days standard plus 12 flexible โbank holidayโ days)\n* Share options\n* Fully remote and flexible working\n* Co-working space stipend\n* Free mental health support (On-demand online therapy & coaching)\n* Quarterly all expenses paid team retreats\n* The latest Macbook and equipment for your home office\n* Professional development budget\n* Unlimited free books \n\nPlease mention the word **AWE** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi4xNDg=). **What weโre doing**\n\n80% of the global workforce doesnโt sit behind a desk - think retail assistants, waiters, bartenders, care assistants, nurses and so on. But up until now only 1% of funding has gone into building tools for them.\n\nAs a desk based worker itโs hard to imagine working without tools like Slack, Trello and Gmail, but for much of the deskless workforce, thatโs the current state of play.\n\nThe only way to find out what shifts youโre working is to look at a print out taped to the break room wall. Changes to shifts are scribbled on the printout, photographed then sent to WhatsApp groups. Managers spend hours calling and texting trying and often not succeeding to fill overtime shifts. Payslips are sent in the post or accessed via web 1.0 portals and holiday is requested either in-person or through clunky legacy kiosks. And thatโs just the tip of the iceberg.\n\nThe result is a dissatisfied workforce, soaring rates of attrition and tens of billions wasted in lost productivity, re-hiring and unnecessary agency spend. \n\nThis same workforce is accustomed to the very best in user experience, WhatsApp for messaging, Monzo for banking and AirBnB for holidays.\n\nSo where is the work app?\n\nThatโs what weโre building at Sona. The single app that will deliver a best in class user experience for deskless workers to manage their entire work life.\n\nWeโre still early on in our journey so anyone getting involved has scope to have a huge impact. \n\nWeโve raised a $2.2m pre-seed round from some amazing investors including SpeedInvest and Notion Capital. We have a highly experienced founding team and amazing sales, marketing and customer success people as well as some exceptional engineering and product design talent. \n\n**About the role**\n\nYouโll be working as part of a fully remote, close knit product team. We use Github + ZenHub for code hosting and project management and operate an extremely lightweight sprint based process.\n\nWe like engineers to be heavily involved throughout the product development process, not just in building.\n\nOur stack has two main components:\n\n* A backend with a GraphQL API and web frontend built using Elixir and Phoenix Live View\n* A native mobile application built in React Native + Typescript\n\nWe think in terms of โT Shapedโ developers. **TalkJS**\n\nTalkJS lets developers build a perfect chat feature in just a few hours. We power communication in online marketplaces, community sites, trading platforms and so on.\n\nWe're product driven and we care tremendously about quality: We're out to build the tool that every developer worldwide will use to build chat/communication features. TalkJS touches millions of people and is growing quickly. \n\nWe're hiring smart & autonomous people to solve challenging problems. We think you ship your best work when you're happy, well-rested, have a healthy work/life balance, and get full autonomy to make the right calls. More info on [https://talkjs.com/jobs](https://talkjs.com/jobs).\n\n**Senior Fullstack Developer**\n\nWe want TalkJS to be the default tool for developers to build chat features. To accomplish that vision, we need to make TalkJS deliciously customizable and still fantastic out of the box.\n\nWe're looking to extend the team with someone who has broad front- and backend experience. Stack includes React/TypeScript/Elixir but it's OK if you're not experienced with all of those precisely. Our humble goal is to ship a product that's super simple to install, fantastic to use immediately, and infinitely customizable. Simple and customizable seem deeply at odds with each other, but we think we can pull it off. If you're up for the challenge of marrying the two, then this is for you.\n\nWe offer tremendous freedom and responsibility + work in a remarkably decent codebase (for a startup :D). At TalkJS we like to think that we're good at striking a balance between meticulous code and shipping quickly. If that sounds like your kind of environment, then this is for you.\n\n**Our ideal candidate:**\n\n* has broad technical interests\n* likes to design great APIs for other programmers\n* has demonstrable experience writing single-page web applications\n* has demonstrable experience writing backends\n* knows at least 3 programming languages well\n* likes to work together with the team to make our product better across the board\n\nBonus points if you know Elixir.\n\nSalary varies with seniority and is benchmarked to Dutch/Amsterdam norms. \n\nPlease mention the words **CORRECT GAME DEAL** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMjE2LjczLjIxNi4xNDg=).
