\nCome join SparkMeter's software team and help increase electricity access in developing countries. As a Web Engineer, you'll help build the web application our utility customers use to set up and operate our affordable smart metering systems. Your work will be high impact: the electrification your code will help enable is not an incremental improvement, it is a fundamental change in the way real people live, work, go to school, eat, and relax.\n\nYou'll focus on these areas:\n\n\n* Frontend development. You'll be in charge of our web application's frontend, writing modern HTML, CSS, & JavaScript to develop new features and keep existing features working smoothly. You'll set the direction for the frontend stack, making sure we're choosing secure and supportable patterns, libraries, and tools.\n\n* Backend development. You'll work closely with Johan Dahlin, our backend-focused engineer, to write efficient backend code with a footprint small enough to run well on inexpensive hardware like Raspberry Pis.\n\n* Product development. Engineers are key contributors to the product development process at SparkMeter. You'll participate in the product design and refine the development roadmap by attending product meetings, helping to develop user stories, and vetting designs for usability and implementation.\n\n\n\n\nIn your first few months you'll:\n\n\n* Improve low bandwidth performance. Our customers use inexpensive Android tablets and high latency connections to access the web interface. You'll remove extraneous code, minimize requests, cache as much as you can, and explore other techniques to make the application work well for all users.\n\n* Build new data visualizations. Microgrids generate a lot of data. You'll help design new visualizations using Pandas, Highcharts, and other tools to to help our customers understand how the grid is working and make better decisions.\n\n* Visit a microgrid. You'll have the opportunity to travel to a microgrid project to see how it works, how the utility administers it, and the impact it has on the community — and you'll apply what you learn to improve our metering systems when you get back.\n\n\n\n\nSparkMeter's Stack\nOur smart meter firmware is written in C, and the meters communicate with each other and their base station with a TCP/JSON API over USB to radio. Python (Flask) web applications run both on the base stations and in the cloud. We use PostgreSQL and SQLAlchemy for a data store, Celery / RabbitMQ for asynchronous operations, and Pandas for data analysis. The Bootstrap-based web frontend uses a mix of Angular and traditional, server-driven views.\n\nWhere You'll Work\nSparkMeter's software team is based in our Waltham, Massachusetts office, but our engineers are all over the world. You're welcome to join us in the Boston area, to work remotely, or some combination of the two.\n\nHow You'll Work\nWe use an Agile-like workflow to run the development process. You'll join daily software team stand-ups to build relationships and report on personal development progress, and weekly bug triage meetings to make sure we're fixing as many bugs as we can before writing new code. \nWe need a strong backend web applications developer, full time.  LAMP stack; running proprietary Angular apps on CodeIngnitor, plus ExpressionEngine content management system with lots of customization, a few NodeJS apps for real-time data processing tasks, and a little bit of legacy PHP;  running on a multi-tier farm in front of high avail MySQL., hosted in AWS.\n\nLooking for a developer with strong web app architecture experience on the backend to help modernize the legacy code (a little), build and deploy new features and apps (a lot), and in general keep our menagerie of ecommerce sites and internal support applications working like a charm.\n\nThe current development team works 100% internally focused, on dedicated systems for our ecommerce sites, marketing, operations, and investment/financial tools for our analysts.  4 full-time devs, two part time, plus 3 designers, all working in a DevOps style.  Informal and flat organization, with lots of sharing and collaboration, but also complete ownership of your projects from concept to shipping. \n\nMust be a strong multi-tier web applications developer who can work on all aspects of the site from front-end (coding, not design) to application and data layers.  Good working knowledge of security and scalability best practices.  Experience in a fast release cycle environment – we put out new code multiple times per day.  Self-driven, with a focus on putting out clean and well documented code.  \n\nBonus points if you:\n\n\n* Know SQL like the back of your hand.  Lots of focus on reporting and data visualization for the marketing and sales team.\n\n* Have testing and analytics experience.  We make heavy use of Google Analytics, Optimizely, etc. to find out what works and doesn’t for our users. \n\n* Can pitch in on AWS systems management – anything from setting up an SSH relay box at the edge, to configuring opcode caching on PHP, to updating puppet to add additional dependencies.\n\n\n\n\nWork is 100% remote with no travel requirement (if you want to come visit our main office in the beautiful ski village of Stowe, VT, you’ll be welcome of course).  All existing developers and designers are remote too – no odd man out here. \n\nCompany has been around 10+ years, profitable since inception, and is a leader in the investment publishing industry.  Flexible schedule and shift timing.  Paid time off.  Etc. \n\nIndividuals and placement agents only, no vendors.  Must have at least 5 years web app dev experience.  Non-U.S. welcome to apply, but English skills must be 99th percentile, as this is a fast-moving U.S. based team.  \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to JavaScript, Node, Web Developer, Developer, Digital Nomad, DevOps, English, LAMP, Angular, Travel, Marketing, Sales, Backend and Ecommerce jobs that are similar:\n\n $60,000 — $120,000/year\n
