Please, pleasy-please, read and respect the following 5 notes before applying with a single click:
Instead of using the RemoteOK built-in application system where the systems sends the employer a note like "John is interested in this position, click here to see his RemoteOK CV" please just send your CV in PDF format to the following E-Mail address: [email protected]
We'll pay you 1500 EUR per month for 6h per day, Monday to Friday. It's hard to stay focused for 8 hours straight, therefore more than 6h per day don't make sense. You can have other jobs on the side, but not while you're dedicating your daily 6h to Lightup. The 6h must get spent dedicated, continous, without interruption and without doing other tasks at the same time.
You'll find a keyword at the end of this job description. Include it in your E-Mail to us, either in the subject or in the body of your E-Mail, so that we know you're clear about what you're actually applying for vs. just applying for a ton of jobs in a random fashion because that's not cool. E-Mails without the keyword will get ignored.
If there are should be typing or grammar mistakes in your CV we'll already know that you don't pay much attention to detail and in this case you're the wrong candidate for this job.
Thanks for your cooperation, these are some prerequisites to save time on both sides. :-)
Now, about the actual job: Lightup was established in 1998 in Frankfurt, Germany as a Hosting & Domain Provider and today is still a small but international Internet Full-Service & Telephony Service Provider, focusing heavily on web-based telecommunication services (VoIP) since 2011. We're need more developers to create more cool web telecom-related projects and apps. 100% of our team works from remote.
To compensate for the monthly kind of low payment of just 1500 EUR, which may be too low for some parts of the world, we're offering you a quite unique profit sharing model: For every web project that you turn into reality, you'll receive 20% of the profit that this project generates for as long as you stay with Lightup. That way, you'll be also extra motivated to extend the service you just created and keep it running and improve it over time while it's growing, generating you even more profit every month. We love to see our employees happy, and if the company is profiting as a whole, you as an individual should profit from that, too.
We'll create the ideas, and you'll put these projects into reality. Your profile:
You are awesome at working independently and self-sufficient, you are great at researching using Google and AI tools extensively to find the infos you need & to learn.
You could, in theory, build functional websites from scratch without relying on AI or programming tools.
You can write code from scratch using your brain, without AI, and just by using a text editor (if need be).
Coding means actually writing manual code for you, not copy'ing & paste'ing code snippets that you found on the web. To you, coding also doesn't mean dragging objects from A to B in some visual "programming" tool.
In other words, you're a real programmer!
Your skills:
Perfect English & typing proficiency. No typos, no grammar mistakes.
You can create Android apps from scratch, from start to finish, by yourself.
You can handle the Linux shell and you can navigate through a Linux-based filesystem using just command line tools.
You're a master of the programming language(s) of your choice that allow you to create web-projects (PHP, Python, whatever).
You are very good at SQL, you understand the inner workings of e.g. MySQL and thus you know what makes queries slow and what makes them fast.
All of this requires that you already have plenty of experience, if you are new to all of this or if you think AI will be able to handle these requirements for you, then you are not the right candidate.
You have used vi or vim before.
What the job will look like in practice:
We're defining the inner workings and features of the to-be-created web-based service, or app, together.
You'll start at 0 and build these services & apps from the ground up, independently, by yourself.
We'll communicate permanently via Slack.
Here you can find the keyword so that we'll know you actually read until here: Work-in-underpants.
No travelling required, you can do this job from anywhere in the world with a stable, broadband internet connection. External keyboard + external mouse required in case you're working on a laptop, otherwise you would be too slow for what we expect from you.
We are a German company, and precision and speed are key to this role. :-)
And now, we're looking forward to read from you - thank you!

\nCome join SparkMeter's software team and help increase electricity access in developing countries. As a Web Engineer, you'll help build the web application our utility customers use to set up and operate our affordable smart metering systems. Your work will be high impact: the electrification your code will help enable is not an incremental improvement, it is a fundamental change in the way real people live, work, go to school, eat, and relax.\n\nYou'll focus on these areas:\n\n\n* Frontend development. You'll be in charge of our web application's frontend, writing modern HTML, CSS, & JavaScript to develop new features and keep existing features working smoothly. You'll set the direction for the frontend stack, making sure we're choosing secure and supportable patterns, libraries, and tools.\n\n* Backend development. You'll work closely with Johan Dahlin, our backend-focused engineer, to write efficient backend code with a footprint small enough to run well on inexpensive hardware like Raspberry Pis.\n\n* Product development. Engineers are key contributors to the product development process at SparkMeter. You'll participate in the product design and refine the development roadmap by attending product meetings, helping to develop user stories, and vetting designs for usability and implementation.\n\n\n\n\nIn your first few months you'll:\n\n\n* Improve low bandwidth performance. Our customers use inexpensive Android tablets and high latency connections to access the web interface. You'll remove extraneous code, minimize requests, cache as much as you can, and explore other techniques to make the application work well for all users.\n\n* Build new data visualizations. Microgrids generate a lot of data. You'll help design new visualizations using Pandas, Highcharts, and other tools to to help our customers understand how the grid is working and make better decisions.\n\n* Visit a microgrid. You'll have the opportunity to travel to a microgrid project to see how it works, how the utility administers it, and the impact it has on the community — and you'll apply what you learn to improve our metering systems when you get back.\n\n\n\n\nSparkMeter's Stack\nOur smart meter firmware is written in C, and the meters communicate with each other and their base station with a TCP/JSON API over USB to radio. Python (Flask) web applications run both on the base stations and in the cloud. We use PostgreSQL and SQLAlchemy for a data store, Celery / RabbitMQ for asynchronous operations, and Pandas for data analysis. The Bootstrap-based web frontend uses a mix of Angular and traditional, server-driven views.\n\nWhere You'll Work\nSparkMeter's software team is based in our Waltham, Massachusetts office, but our engineers are all over the world. You're welcome to join us in the Boston area, to work remotely, or some combination of the two.\n\nHow You'll Work\nWe use an Agile-like workflow to run the development process. You'll join daily software team stand-ups to build relationships and report on personal development progress, and weekly bug triage meetings to make sure we're fixing as many bugs as we can before writing new code. You'll also work with other engineers in regular code reviews to teach and learn new coding strategies and catch mistakes.\n\nSparkMeter was founded to promote opportunity in underrepresented communities.\nSparkMeter's core value is opportunity: the opportunity for underserved communities to achieve great things. That's why our mission is to increase access to electricity in underserved communities - it is electricity and the services derived from it that unlock and create those opportunities. This value is reflected in our hiring ethos: we believe that the strongest teams have diverse backgrounds. Our approach to hiring has been validated by academic and industry studies that show that workforce diversity improves team and business performance. (It has also been validated by the quality of the team we've assembled so far!) We encourage applications from members of groups currently underrepresented in web development & software engineering. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

I ensure that data flows around Coolblue like water.'\n\nWhat you will really be doing\n\n\n* Create extremely well crafted backend services in C#. \n\n* Help to redesign the data flow into Coolblue's applications in a RESTful manner.\n\n* Create services that separate the responsibilities of the current back office applications, essentially creating a service-oriented architecture for our new applications.\n\n* Develop interfaces to any number of required data stores (for example; Oracle, SQL Server, RavenDB, or Couchbase).\n\n* Write testable code that will be continuously tested and deployed by TeamCity and Octopus Deploy, and will therefore have a real effect on live environments.\n\n* Coach and provide feedback to fellow developers.\n\n* Think about technical choices, such as our architecture, tools and processes.\n\n\n\n\nHow will you be doing this?\n\n\n* You will actively participate in your team's (multidisciplinary) Scrum process.\n\n* You will receive and pro-actively get feedback from end users and developers. After evaluation of this feedback you might incorporate it in a new iteration.\n\n* You will initiate and actively participate in discussions about technical choices, such as our architecture, tools, and processes. Choices that were made in the past are not rules.\n\n* You open pull requests, review the code and give feedback that makes your team even better.\n\n* You will work in a motivated team, get the time needed to meet ambitious goals.\n\n* You will actively improve overall software quality. Write SOLID and testable C# code.\n\n* There is always a budget for good ideas.\n\n\n\n\nWhat we have worked on last quarter\n\n\n* Incoming Goods. The internal application that supports putting away new stock was re-written. The Web API developers wrote services to interface with both old and new data-stores in order to modernise the new application without interfering with existing business processes.\n\n* Mobile Application. The Coolblue iPhone and Android app need real-time information about picking and packing of orders. RESTful services were built to enable this real-time information flow.\n\n\n\n\nWhat a day in the office might look like\nOn the way in, you grab very drinkable coffee and make sure you say 'Goedemorgen' to everyone. Drop your bag at your desk and head over to the colleague that has some questions. You'll spend a few minutes with him, before you need to get back for your 9:30 stand-up. Today you need to finish up the service for the purchasing optimisation team; you just need to finish up the test cases and push it into CI by the time you go for lunch - you chuck your headphones in and get on with it. You take a break for lunch at the Markthal with your newest friends; making sure that you're back in time for the meeting with a data engineer that will help you design a new replacement for the current integration with Oracle. You stop on the way back to grab another coffee and discuss the semantics of PUT vs POST with the team next door. You spend the remainder of your afternoon writing a blog post in the IT Wiki on the new queuing methodology you demoed last week, and then pack up and, because it's Friday, head out for a beer with your colleagues.\n\nTeam\nYou will be working in a team with a few other sharp developers, each of them with their own fanaticism, ranging from code quality and testability, to algorithms and scalability. Your team is complemented by a Scrum Master and a Product Owner. You might want to ensure that you come equipped with your own NERF gun though ... Fortune favours the prepared. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n
