Remote Impact Research Intern

\nThe Role\n\nAs an intern on Newselaโ€™s Research Team, you will partner closely with the Lead Research Analyst to help investigate and document Newselaโ€™s educational effectiveness. You will leverage your statistical and technical expertise to conduct quantitative research on student outcomes. You will also use your data visualization and communication skills to develop reports that showcase how Newsela helps kids achieve. This role is a great opportunity for a current graduate student or early-career researcher to apply and develop their technical and science communication skills in an industry setting while answering questions that have real-world implications for students across the United States.\n\nRequired Qualifications:\n\n\nResearch experience in any of the following fields: learning analytics / educational data mining, education, psychology, communications, child development, cognitive science, or related field\n\nFluency using R for statistical analysis and data visualization (especially tidyverse)\n\nFundamental statistics knowledge and skills\n\nFamiliarity with basic SQL (e.g., JOINs, aggregate functions)\n\nStrong data visualization skills (ggplot2)\n\nBackground or interest in educational research\n\nCore values including impact, learning, integrity, empowerment, diversity, passion, and selflessness\n\n\n\n\nBonus Points For:\n\n\nFamiliarity with markdown syntax (e.g., Rmarkdown)\n\nExperience preparing data visualizations for audiences with varying data literacy\n\nExperience with multilevel/hierarchical modeling\n\n\n\n\nPosition Details\n\nThe internship is fully remote. Total compensation will be based on hours worked at a rate of $35/hour. This position will be either full-time (40 hours per week) or part-time (20 hours per week), depending on candidate availability. As our European Supply Chain Manager, you will have the opportunity to lead the supply chain efforts for our European branches. Your contributions will have a direct impact on the business by providing KPIโ€™s back to the business leaders on their supply chain needs, including cost improvement metrics. So, what will you be doing as our European Supply Chain Manager?

  • Collaborate with L&P branches, Logistics offices and European service providers to execute shipments as required.
  • Develop an understanding and maintain documentation of L&P Branches / Suppliers and customers needs for shipping intra Europe and Internationally, including road freight, ocean freight, air freight, consolidation and deconsolidation needs and develop SOPs (Standard Operation Procedures) to ensure that such needs are met.
  • Maintain and develop positive business relationships with internal branchโ€™s key personnel involved in or directly relevant to Logistics activities.
  • Monitor performance of key external service providers. Communicate to management service failures and help develop action plans to correct for future shipments. Monitor implementation of process improvements.
  • Identify, evaluate & implement opportunities to leverage L&P volumes with current service providers utilizing multiple business units.
  • Coordinate project analysis, bids, etc. for existing business units with existing or potential service providers.
  • Assist with new service provider set ups through SOPโ€™s and required service provider documents.
  • Collaborate with Business unit Purchasing & Sales departments and Logistics offices as necessary to meet customer requirements
  • Develop & Incorporate KPIโ€™s to monitor performance and identify opportunities for improvement with freight forwarders, ocean carriers against benchmarks and service agreements to improve support for our business units. Report findings along with suggested improvement solutions on a quarterly basis.
  • Provide feedback updates regarding market details for air, ocean and intra Europe trucking to management & Business Units.
  • Work with Logistics systems, Accounting & other Logistics offices to ensure visibility & financial data integrity of shipments.
  • Report cost savings / cost avoidance opportunities to management.


To be successful in this role, youโ€™ll need:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Supply Chain Management, Transportation, Business Management, Operations Management, or related field, or suitable combination of education and training
  • 5+ yearsโ€™ experience in the transportation and logistics industry, including 2+ years in a management role
  • Analytical and data-driven mindset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite applications.
  • Excellent organization skills, proven written and verbal communication skills.
  • You can read, write and speak English fluently.

Things we consider a plus:

  • 3-4 yearsโ€™ experience working directly with/for Freight Forwarders to support ocean & air shipments
  • Experience within a fast-paced Automotive industry, with the supply chain and inventory business objectives

  • We are seeking a full-time employee who can help us research, collect and analyze new datasets via hand collection, scraping, or other methods.
  • The ideal candidate can analyze and make recommendations or draw conclusions from those datasets. It is a benefit to have existing expertise on U.S. insurance products, but this position does not require it.
  • Once hired, you will be required to learn and understand products in order to collect appropriate data.
  • Data collection may be both quantitative (for example, insurance quotes) or qualitative (for example, coverages and benefits offered by insurance companies).
  • The interview process will consist of one video interview and a small skills assessment assignment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Fast learner who is curious to learn about U.S. insurance products
  • Able to collect new datasets in an efficient and creative way
  • Able to analyze new datasets to pull out relevant metrics for our users (averages, ranges, availability, etc.)
  • Willing to learn and improve processes over time
  • Willing to learn Slack and Asana communication tools
  • Results oriented with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Tendency to pay close attention to small details that could impact results.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, work under tight deadlines, and handle changing priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Can speak in 100% clear, fluent English
  • Experience collecting and analyzing datasets
  • Project management experience
  • Personal finance topical knowledge is a plus
  • Familiar with Google Workplace tools (docs, sheets, etc.)
  • Experience (0-3 years) in data analytics, reporting or business analyst
  • Ability to use SQL and Microsoft Excel to create pivot tables, graphs, and charts
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI or Tableau is plus
