๐Ÿ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK, this helps us get more companies to post here, thanks!

When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. You should also NEVER have to pay to buy equipment which they then pay you back for later. Also never pay for trainings you have to do. Those are scams! NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! Posts that link to pages with "how to work online" are also scams. Don't use them or pay for them. Also always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. A good idea is to check the domain name for the site/email and see if it's the actual company's main domain name. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! Read more to avoid scams. When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. Remote OK accepts no liability or responsibility as a consequence of any reliance upon information on there (external sites) or here.

\nWe are looking for a Director I.T. with a background as Linux System Administrator with a who can join our team! You will handle a variety of projects to support and improve the organization's network systems.\n \n Position is Salary With Stock Options in a startup that plans to execute a liquity event within the next 12 months in a large and lucrative market.\n \n Employment Type\n Design and deploy a network to support an ultra-high performance financial system and own your design/implementation in a mutually respectful collaborative environment with a no-nonsense team.\n \n Why This Position Should Interest You\n We are working to make a significant change in an established industry which has not yet understood the potential of the area we are working on. We have assembled a highly experienced and senior team who is serious about and working diligently to realize our vision. We love open source technologies, and believe in managing and maintaining our own data centers, and are investing our time and money to push the limits of what is possible.\n \n About Us\n We are an innovative, regulated FinTech startup in stealth mode, building an institutional level risk transfer solution. We are a small group of senior-level engineers, financial traders, and entrepreneurs with well over 75 years of experience in startup ventures. We are working on a startup with both significant upside and extremely interesting engineering challenges that may include decentralized technology.  We have invested a great deal of time in solving a large, global business problems, and are now seeking technical expertise for design and implementation.\n \n About You\n\n\n* You really want to work in a functional startup environment\n\n* You have always been curious about what it would be like to work within a highly collaborative environment devoid of hierarchical constraints and political gameplaying\n\n* You have worked in large corporate engineering environments, and perhaps even a Silicon Valley startup, for at least 10 years.\n\n* You seek intellectually challenging projects; solid technical & business teams; the freedom to create & influence well designed solutions that you can be proud of, without the gridlock typically associated with larger projects\n\n* You have developed misgivings toward large frameworks and now tend toward minimalistic and elegant designs\n\n\n\n\n\n Your Role\n\n\n* Work remotely with a team across North America\n\n* Participate in an ongoing conversation with other team members with the goal of creating the best design possible\n\n* In the short term, review our existing infrastructure and develop/implement a plan to consolidate our systems and maximize efficiency\n\n* In the long term, design the network architecture of high-performance systems\n\n* Capture your thinking in well thought-out requirements, design and operational support documents that clearly communicate essential information, but that are not intended to be overly taxing in their formation.\n\n* Overall, you will commit to operating within a collaborative framework of design, decision making and implementation\n\n\n\n\n\n Required Experience\n\n\n* Git\n\n* OpenVPN\n\n* OpenLDAP\n\n* Docker\n\n* LAMP (Linux administration)\n\n* Virtualization\n\n* Ubuntu\n\n\n\n\nHelpful\n\n\n* Redmine\n\n* pfSense\n\n* OpenStack\n\n* Kubernetes\n\n* Open Radius\n\n* HIPPA and/or PCI Experience\n\n* Cassandra\n\n* Jenkins\n\n* Zimbra\n\n* PHP Forum\n\n* Owncloud/Nextcloud\n\n* Openfire\n\n* CRM\n\n* Asterisk VOIP\n\n* Wiki\n\n* Chat\n\n\n\n\nNetworking & Security Experience\n Candidate must be able to demonstrate significant knowledge & experience in:\n\n\n* Creating highly detailed & professional diagrams representing network architectures;\n\n* Applying networking best practices;\n\n* Applying network & application security;\n\n* Implementing and maintaining a monitoring solution;\n\n* SLA reporting;\n\n* Working with change management and audit committees.\n\n\n\n\n\n Critical Intangibles\n\n\n* When production systems go down, or need to be deployed expdeditiously, you take prides in ability to work quietly diligently and compently until critical systems support staff, customers, partners are online and functioning normally.\n\n* You are more comfortable drafting planning documentation and following a disciplined proven approach rather than following a cowboy-process where staff run directly into implementation mode, all hoping to demonstrate that they are new team rockstar.\n\n* You prefer to be able to find the elegant solution over the expedient, but also fully understands when the latter is necessary and can apply what most aptly suits the current business/technical demands.\n\n* You understand the word "ownership", and appreciate what accepting ownership means in the context of an IT department.  Hence, you will not shy away from taking responsibility for the IT domain, nor letting their staff do likewise.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions\nWhile this startup poses an incredibly opportunity, we're working in a extremely unique environment which places an inordinate level of pressure on each team member, requiring them to own their own areas of responsibility with little help from outside resources or staff.  This can be a significant challenge for someone who has come from a corporate environment where there are generally sufficient staffing for the workload.  \n\nGiven our situation, I'd like to ask you the following additional questions.  I urge you to take your time and to provide us with well thought out and complete responses.\n\n\n\n* How do you address IT challenges when there is no one around to give you direction, and give you the go-ahead or approval?\n\n* Coming into a new IT situation, how do you prioritize task?\n\n* What are the most important IT concerns/issues/challenges for a really small, geographically distributed company?\n\n* What would you do on your first day of work if no one told you what to do?\n\n* Can you provide us with examples of projects that you've worked on earlier in your career, when you actually had to get your hands dirty?  (please let us know types of tools and systems that you worked with).\n\n\nThanks again, and I look forward to your reply.\n\n\n\n Location\n The candidate may work virtually, but engineering operations will be headquartered in Austin, TX. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Executive, Senior and Linux jobs that are similar:\n\n $70,000 — $120,000/year\n
