Our newsroom has produced thousands of in-depth reports along with more than 120 podcasts and other forms of premium content. Put simply, The Athletic is at the center of a sports fanโ€™s universe.\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Role\n\n\nThe Athletic is accepting applications for its inaugural Leon H. Carter newsroom internship, a 12-week program either remote or based in New York City, which will run from September 16, 2024 - December 6, 2024. The intern will be embedded on our editorial design and visuals team, which will expose the intern to every facet of the newsroom. The mission of The Athleticโ€™s internship program is to attract and develop the industryโ€™s next stars. The intern will help shape our most informative coverage while helping to advance our goal to be the top destination for sports news around the world. The rate of pay for this role is $20.00 USD per hour. \n\n\nThis is a remote internship that will require some travel to New York City. Candidates based in New York City have the option of working on-site in the New York office.\n\n\nThe application deadline is April 19, 2024.\n\n\n\nResponsibilities\n* Work closely with the design team and newsroom to enhance articles, social media, and basic data viz, plus complete an art direction project.\n* Articles: Use photos and vector elements to create bespoke lead images for stories published by The Athletic.\n* Social: Use type, photos and vector elements to create posts for Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms.\n* Graphics/Data viz: Learn how to use our intuitive chart building tool to create basic data visualizations.\n* Art Direction: Complete an art direction project by commissioning an illustrator to create original artwork. Provide instructions and guidance to help the artist understand the brief.\n\n\n\nRequirements\n* Undergraduate students who are ideally in their junior or senior year.\n* Ability to work a 30-40 hour work week.\n* Previous design and/or newsroom internship experience is a plus.\n* Flexibility: ability to adapt to fast-paced work environments where needs and priorities can change quickly.\n* Deep knowledge of and a passion for sports.\n* This is a remote internship that will require some travel to New York City.
