About the role

Youโ€™ll be the 3rd person joining our 2-person engineering team and will mainly work on the feature development. Upcoming are improvements to the collaboration experience, image support and the Discord sync.

While we use React, Typescript, Firebase and React Native, weโ€™re not looking for a checklist of technologies. Weโ€™re looking for people who can demonstrate experience and deep knowledge about programming and the surrounding skills to ship projects. (Weโ€™re not open to junior positions at this moment.)

This means the ability to analyze problems, communicate how youโ€™re going to solve them, the trade-offs involved with your approach, converting that into well-written code that your colleagues will have a good time continuing on and transferring knowledge. We value how much certain ideas and technologies fit the problem at hand and the overall architecture of the product, not which technologies are hot at at the moment.

We do combine simple ideas in exciting ways to allow us to achieve much more with a small team and create a developer experience only found in our company, with much more to come. This enabled that 95% of Memex was built by only 2 devs.

  • The hurry to get out features and the need to clean up code so we can continue to ship quickly are at constant odds with each other. You can identify whatโ€™s needed to keep us nimble and are good at communicating that to developers and non-developers alike.
  • Youโ€™re passionate about opportunities you see to make the product and our experience working on our project great and clearly communicate advantages and trade-offs, but you recognize the different perspectives will enhance your ideas, or show that your idea is not the right fit for a particular context.
  • You value simple code that is easy to understand over smart code that people are afraid to change or costs needless effort to dive into (including for your own sake after youโ€™ve forgotten how the cleverness works.)
  • You can clearly communicate how much autonomy or guidance you need to get things done, but can also concisely keep people who depend on your work up to date and provide them with what they need to get their things done.
  • Weโ€™re building a platform encouraging the encounter of opposing ideas, and are strong proponents of free speech and care for our fellow humans. So even though we may intensely disagree, we recognize those who we disagree with as people with fundamental rights and human needs. We donโ€™t like to nurture cultures of cancelling, labelling people with all sorts of -isms and one-sided views across the political spectrum. Why are we building Memex?

On our own we canโ€™t possibly understand the majority of polarising topics we encounter every day. However, we all search, filter, read and take notes about content online and produce information valuable to other people.

Memex aims to make sharing recommendations and conversations become so easy that we can share what we normally are be too busy to share, build on each othersโ€™ research and easily compare contrary ideas

We think that for a healthy social media environment it needs:

  • Companies that donโ€™t have such strong profit maximisation incentives that usually lead to extractive business practices like attention/ad-based business models or lock ins
  • People with the ability to modify their own experience of a newsfeed and notifications
  • Freedom of speech, but not necessarily freedom of reach
  • Reduce need for centralised moderation through communal and individual content moderation

The economics behind Memex

We are a Steward Owned organisation in order to prevent profit maximisation incentives that lead to extractive business models and practices, while still giving the company the ability to grow big and fast. To enable that investors and team have a capped return on their investments and company can never be sold. We can get pretty rich if we are doing a good job, but not become billionaires.

We believe there is no collective intelligence without individual intelligence. For individual intelligence to be expressed in a digital space we need to be able to adapt our tools & connect workflows that individually suit our needs. What is the job?

Looking for challenging responsibilities in the most promising tech industry? Join us as the first QA Automation Engineer (in this particular product team) in the crypto financial industry, and you will get the most out of using new technologies and test methods.

During your first few months, you will start by defining the tools and frameworks required to have a complete suite of automated tests. This will involve diving into the applications features and functionality, rolling up your sleeves doing manual testing. With a better understanding under your belt, you will define test plans that can beย  automated and cover UI and API testing, as well as testing failures in any of the subsystems, including databases, third-party services or other internal services.

What are we looking for?

  • You enjoy automating everything, the thought of repeating tasks manually makes you shiver, but you understand the need to do exploratory manual testing to create test plans.

  • You have experience testing Web apps, APIs applications in a fast delivering growth environment.

  • You are a hands-on, independent product tester with experience working in a multidisciplinary team formed of designers, Front and Backend developers and DevOps.

  • Youโ€™re patient when dealing with others. Youโ€™re a good listener, and happy to be a teacher when needed.

What skills do you need?

  • You have solid demonstrable experience as a QA Automation Engineer doing end-to-end testing.

  • You love breaking things and let your creativity go wild (e.g. functional and black-box testing, regression testing, system integration testing, load testing, manual testing).

  • You are proficient in at least one programming/scripting language such as Python, C#, Java or JavaScript.

  • Experience with BDD, TDD, or contract testing.

  • Docker and Git experience is important.

Your key area of focus:

To achieve our mission, we need to make sure our app is easy to use for every interaction from signup to sending to editing info to resetting your password. Youโ€™ll work closely with our Head of Product to fix highly impactful user problems and A/B test interface changes to make the experience even smoother and quicker. Youโ€™ll eventually be one of the primary code owners of our Android app, and the go-to people for when someone else on the team has a hairy Android problem they need help with, but it wonโ€™t be all Android work thoughโ€” you will need to work across client and server to solve problems end-to-end.

In your first few months, you'll

  • Streamline in-app signup and verification flows
  • Set up A/B tests to measure the impact of your work
  • Help us build a top-tier referral program to help users share their love of Sendwave with their friends
  • Advise other engineers on Android development questions and challenges

What you bring to the table:

  • 4+ years of professional experience as a full-stack or mobile engineer (but at least 3+ years exclusively in mobile)
  • Significant experience working with Android โ€” you donโ€™t need to know every detail of the Android environment off the top of your head, but you should have a strong enough foundation to figure out those details when needed

\nThe Lead Developer for our college readiness skills learning support system, called JUICE, will have a unique opportunity to own the MEAN technology stack and software development for an innovative tutorial learning system we’re creating for College for America (CfA)  at Southern New Hampshire University.  CfA is an online, radically affordable, competency-based program for underserved working adults. We’ve been nationally recognized for innovation and received a 4-year First in the World grant from the US Department of Education to design and develop a fully online competency-based learning system to support students’ foundational college readiness skills in an entirely new way. We’re completing the learning design phase now, we have a key technology partner on board for educational game design, and we’re looking for the right senior software engineer with great experience who is looking for an opportunity to own application development for this new learning technology. We work as a small, cross-functional team within a very friendly group of creative, smart educators at College for America. We work remotely as well as onsite here in the Manchester office.\n\nJUICE is being developed in a Cloud-based, modular architecture based on the MEAN stack (MongoDB-Express-AngularJS-Node.js) for delivery of the learning experiences.  JUICE technology makes ample use of open source software and low-initial investment services. JUICE is designed for longer-term growth within CfA following the research phase, and is also designed for extensibility and open sharing as part of the Department of Education’s First in The World (FITW) program goals. JUICE development includes an LTI-based integration with the CfA learning management system. The JUICE production environment will support a randomized control trial study, while continuing development for a full product launch following completion of the study.\n\nThe Lead Developer is the primary software engineer and oversees the work of key external partners for development of mini-games, widgets, or content authoring tools. The Lead Developer consults with a Senior Technology Advisor on strategy, software architecture, and system operations. The Senior Developer reports to the Deputy Director of JUICE and works in a small, fast-paced cross-functional team as a key partner in all aspects of designing and building, creating interactive learning content experiences, conducting efficacy research, and delivering the JUICE learning system. \n\nWorking remotely within North America is an option, but we cannot consider employees overseas, unfortunately.\n\nThis position is also posted on the Southern New Hampshire University website at https://snhu.peopleadmin.com/postings/14754.
