About Gruntwork

Gruntwork aims to improve humanity's most important invention: Software. Our focus today is on creating a DevOps UX that software engineers actually enjoy, which we do by creating building blocks that make launching in the cloud 10x better/faster/easier. We work with AWS, K8s, Terraform, Terragrunt, Terratest, Go, Typescript, and React, and introduce new tech as needed. We’re a small team (~20 people), but our clients include Toyota, Adobe, TicketMaster, Verizon, and hundreds of startups.

We are profitable, self-funded (no investors, no debt), and pay salaries, equity, and bonuses according to transparent formulas. We are 100% remote, with 2/3 of our team in the USA and 1/3 in Europe. We plan company-wide in-person meetups every few months and are known world-wide for both DevOps thought leadership and our popular open source tools, Terragrunt and Terratest.

Our measure of a successful Grunt is (1) think like an owner, (2) make impact, (3) communicate effectively, (4) be a good person. If this sounds like you, we're hiring!

About The Role

Our infrastructure as code library and platform team delivers an end-to-end, best-practices infrastructure on AWS in just days, all as a product. In this role, you’ll collaborate with other senior-level engineers to define the next generation of AWS and DevOps best practices, codify them for use by thousands of engineers, and design a next-level experience for implementing, operating and understanding them.

What You'll Work On

  • Build a better DevOps experience. We have a unique product that generates complete, multi-account AWS architectures for Terraform and Terragrunt in just a few hours using a collection of internal Golang tools. Help us take this to the next level by using that product to deliver prod architectures directly to customers, and then leveraging their feedback for improvements. Better yet, help us get to the point where the entire experience is completely automated or self-service.
  • Codify AWS and Terraform best practices. Customers look to Gruntwork to share the best way to launch on AWS. Discover AWS and Terraform best practices, and then codify them as repeatable patterns that Gruntwork customers can pull off the shelf.
  • Integrate with the Gruntwork platform. Integrate your product work with our company-wide platform, which consists of a REST API (Next.js/Typescript), a web-based single-page app (Next.js/React/Typescript, Tailwind), and a first-class CLI tool (Go).
  • Build out the Infrastructure as Code Library. Create and maintain reusable infrastructure modules for a variety of infrastructure (e.g., EKS, ECS, RDS, VPC, Lambda, EC2, S3, ElastiCache, etc.), using a variety of tools (e.g., Terraform, Go, Python, Bash, Docker, Packer, etc.) on AWS.
  • Contribute to open source. Contribute to our open source projects as needed, including Terragrunt, Terratest, cloud-nuke, bash-commons, and more.
  • Train and mentor. Play to your strengths and areas of expertise by not only writing code and working on the product but also by sharing knowledge and mentoring both other team members and our customers in those areas.
  • Support customers. Gruntwork is a small, distributed, self-funded, profitable startup, so we'll ask you to provide a limited amount of support to enable learning directly from customers about how we can improve and continue achieving our vision of making it easier to understand, build, and deploy software.

Your Ideal Background

You should meet some of these requirements, but you don't need to meet all of them. As a company, we look for people who can leverage their existing skills to make significant impact in the near term. As an individual, you are likely looking for a growth opportunity, a core part of which is building new skills.

  • You know how to write code across the stack and have experience in one or more of the following: Go, C++, Python, Typescript, Bash, React, Next.js
  • You have production-level experience with AWS.
  • You have expertise in one or more of the following: Kubernetes (any managed offering, preferably EKS), ECS<, EC2, Lambda / Serverless, API Gateway, RDS, S3, AWS Config, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon GuardDuty, IAM, VPC, VPN.
  • You have worked with Terraform or other infrastructure-as-code tools like CloudFormation, CDK, or Pulumi in prod.
  • You have experience achieving compliance and going through audits (e.g., SOC2, HIPAA, vendor, etc).
  • You have a strong background in software engineering.
  • You have strong communication skills in English and are comfortable engaging with external customers.

Your Ideal Values

  • You have a passion for imparting best practices to other developers.
  • But you would rather invest the time to automate a problem than do the same work again.
  • You have a passion for learning (new technologies and languages specifically).
  • But you are motivated most by making impact.
  • You are inspired by our values (https://gruntwork.io/about/#our-values).

Compatible Time Zones

You'll be working with a team in the US time zones, so you can be located in almost any country as long as your time zone is no further west than Los Angeles (GMT-8/GMT-7) and no further east than New York (GMT-5/GMT-4). We've found that when everyone on the team is located in similar time zones, it's easier to collaborate and there's much less pressure to stay up late or get up early, so this is a hard constraint, even if you're willing to work hours different from your current time zone.

Benefits

Our benefits reflect our values. We believe compensation should be fair, transparent, and generous. We hire Grunts in many countries, so some details may vary.

  • Location Independent, Above-Market Salary. To reduce bias and increase transparency, we compute all salaries using formulas. The formula factors in your title and uses a multiplier to produce a result that's above market for that title. Our salaries are location independent.
  • Profit-Sharing Bonus. We set aside a pot of money at the end of each year based on profits and distribute bonuses according to a formula that uses as inputs your level within the company and the length of your tenure at the company.
  • Hardware Budget. We'll buy you a brand new 16" Apple MacBook Pro (or other computer of your choosing of equivalent value) upon joining. It will be owned by you, not the company.
  • Personal Budget. We'll give you a personal budget of $1,000 USD per month to spend on your workspace (e.g., a co-working space), health (e.g., gym, yoga), time (e.g., babysitter), and/or learning (e.g., books, courses).
  • Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance. We offer a range of high-quality plans with a large portion paid by the company. For countries other than the US, this includes extra coverage on top of your statutory insurance.

In addition to the global benefits listed above, we have some US-specific benefits as well:

  • FSA and HSAs. We don't contribute to these accounts, but we do offer them as an option.
  • 401(k). We contribute a portion of your salary to your 401(k).
  • Disability insurance. If you get disabled, we have a policy that will pay out a portion of your salary.

Life First, Then Work

We believe in planning our work around our lives, not the other way around. To help achieve that we offer:

  • Remote work that lets you control your hours and physical location.
  • Normal working hours that usually amount to not more than ~40h per week, and no working on weekends or holidays.
  • Deliberate project planning that takes into account the time zone of all team members.
  • A minimum vacation policy where you must take at least 4 weeks per year away from work.
  • No one carrying a pager and no on-call rotation. We enable this by only offering support contracts with SLAs of responses on business days / hours only.

Please mention the word WARMTH when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMy4yMzguMTE4Ljgw). This is a feature to avoid fake spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and instantly see they're human.

Our ASR models already outperform companies like Google, AWS, and Microsoft - which is why hundreds of companies and thousands of developers are using our APIs to transcribe and understand millions of videos, podcasts, phone calls, and zoom meetings every day. Our APIs power innovative products like conversational intelligence platforms, zoom meeting summarizers, content moderation, and automatic closed captioning.

AssemblyAI’s Speech-to-Text APIs are already trusted by Fortune 500s, startups, and thousands of developers around the world, with well-known customers including Spotify, Algolia, Dow Jones, Happy Scribe, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, and NBCUniversal. As part of a huge and emerging market, AssemblyAI is well on its way to becoming the leader in speech recognition and NLP.

We're growing at breakneck speed, and recently announced our Series B round. We've raised $63M in total funding, and are backed by leading investors including Insight Partners, Accel, Y Combinator, Patrick and John Collision (Founders of Stripe), Nat Friedman (Former CEO of GitHub), and Daniel Gross (Entrepreneur & Investor in companies including GitHub, Uber & SpaceX)!

Our ambition is to build an iconic AI company, making advanced deep learning technology accessible to everyday developers through a simple API, good docs, and a great developer experience.

Our team is fully remote, and our culture is super collaborative, low-ego, transparent, and fast-paced. We want to win - and have a flat organization where everyone can openly share ideas (regardless of their title or position) in order to get the best idea.

As a remote company, our team members are given a lot of trust and autonomy to work where and how they want. We look for people to join our team who are ambitious, curious, and self-motivated, and we put a lot of trust and autonomy into everyone on our team. We want to empower everyone to do their best work with whatever tools, structures, or resources they need to perform at their highest potential.

The Role

  • Build automated test suites and CI/CD pipelines
  • Build highly scalable event-driven and realtime systems
  • Instrument systems with metrics, tracing, and logging
  • Refactor applications to eliminate tech debt

You'll love this job if you....

  • Enjoy solving complex technical problems, even when there is no perfect solution.
  • Enjoy being in a fast-paced, customer-facing role.
  • Thrive in small, cross-functional teams. We like to wear many hats here!
  • You're excited to tackle big technical challenges like building highly scalable architectures and achieving zero-downtime deploys.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience building backend applications using any popular language such as Python, Java, C#, JavaScript, Go, C/C++
  • 4+ years of experience working with Python
  • 4+ working with Python backend frameworks like Django, Flask, or Tornado
  • 4+ years of working with SQL and NoSQL databases

Overview

We are Basket (www.trybasket.com) – a fresh and exciting new approach to save, share and follow the things you love, and the people who love them too. Basket keeps you organised, up to date, and helps you buy better across all shopping categories.

To continue our growth we’re seeking a Senior Backend Engineer located in London or Auckland. With your strong production experience of Python and ETL processes, you’ll play a key role in our data extraction, transformation pipelines, data storage (MongoDB), and data delivery via AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL). You’ll need a deep understanding and experience with serverless AWS (Lamba with EventBridge), and knowledge of the serverless framework (https://www.serverless.com/) would be a significant benefit.

To excel in this role, you’ll learn quickly, think big, and deliver rock-solid results in a fast-paced startup environment. You implicitly know how to balance safe decisions while proactively researching and running code experiments. You’re someone who embraces collaboration and feedback with open arms. You continuously look for ways to grow yourself, help teammates, and opportunities to make the products you work on stronger. This is a chance to join an innovative team where you will be challenged, and have significant input to shape a product we believe will become a global household name. This is an exciting opportunity to join our backend team at a pivotal time in our journey.

This role is development focused, with a small amount of coaching required for junior team members.

How We Work at Basket

At Basket, we work in 2 week development cycles with a clearly defined goal. We’re inspired by companies like Linear where quality work is more important than quantity of features released. We plan each cycle well ahead of time with team discussions, research and workshops to make sure we’re making informed decisions.

Here’s how our typical cycle looks;

  • 2 weeks before a cycle we plan and define requirements for features

  • 1 week before a cycle we do technical due diligence and write acceptance criteria

  • During a cycle we write code using test-driven development, test code to development and staging environments, collaborate with QA, Design and PM team members to ensure features are production ready.

What You'll Do

  • Write, improve and maintain serverless functions to accurately transform and load data into efficient and organised MongoDB storage

  • Develop and maintain 3rd party data clients to enrich stored data

  • Create and update API endpoints for a frontend client using AWS API Gateway (Rest APIs) and AWS AppSync (GraphQL)

  • Analyse and tune application performance with a focus on efficiency using analytics tools such as Lumigo, Sentry, Segment and DataDog

  • Research and architect solutions using serverless architecture patterns

  • Implement and improve analytics and application monitoring performance

  • Approach your work using test driven development (TDD) to ensure the integrity of your code and our services

About You

  • Native English (this is essential)

  • Located in London, UK or Auckland, NZ

  • 5+ years full-time work experience as a backend engineer on production services

  • Advanced knowledge of Python ^3.10 and/or NodeJS ^15.0.0

  • Deep knowledge of webpage parsing, including XPath and Regex

  • Excellent experience with MongoDB and DynamoDB

  • Production experience with AWS services in a serverless microservices context, such as Lambda, AppSync, API Gateway, S3, SNS, SQS, Cognito, EventBridge

  • Lots of energy and enthusiasm about being part of a small, progressive team

Good To Have

  • University degree in computer science, or equivalent experience

  • Experience working in a VC-backed startup environment

Our Culture

Our culture is built on respect, collaboration and a drive to shake up the world of shopping. We’re at the beginning of our journey with the opportunity for new team members to lead projects, and shape services that customers interact with daily. Our team members are conscientious, deep thinkers, always striving to be awesome human beings.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds at our company. We are dedicated to a policy of nondiscrimination in employment on any basis including race, colour, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.

We're living in unprecedented times and, in many cases, feeling further apart from our coworkers and purpose than ever before.

The Captuure team is building Orson, a first of its kind platform that helps teams strengthen the connection to their teammates, work, and mission.

Oh, and greatly reduce synchronous meetings also, no big deal.

The engineering team

For the tech folks working on it? We get to build fast and compelling web and video processing, with a lot of fun challenges along the way and a level of autonomy and ownership that's missing from many teams.

In the first 6 months, you will:

  • Join a small team of highly skilled developers to launch the beta
  • Lead or pair on features for video recording, processing, and streaming, with the option for web, distributed systems, or infrastructure work to fit your existing skills (more below)
  • Collaborate with leadership to test features and iterate with beta teams

In the next 2 years, you will:

  • Help thousands of teams grow more connected, reduce synchronous meeting time, and enjoy their work more
  • Continue to grow technical and leadership skills as we expand the business
  • Choose an adventure: deeper technical specialization, cross-team technical leadership, management, and more

We believe in moving fast, through good engineering practices. Deploys should be boring. We should know about bugs before customers can call, and fix them instead of putting them on the backlog. We're agile, taking the best from many methods, rather than following the One True Way. And we believe teams outperform individuals.

Benefits

We are a seed stage company, this comes with some limitations but also the benefits of joining the tight knit early team that will set the direction for years to come.

  • Salary Range: 150-180k per year, Options
  • Unlimited vacation
  • Flexible hours, work/life balance
  • Health insurance
  • Remote culture w/ experienced remote leadership
  • The option to work from our Orlando office if you're in the area

Most of our team is East coast US. We tend to collaborate strongly between 9AM-4PM ET and get together 2 - 4 times/year. We'd prefer candidates be East Coast or Central to balance overlapping work hours and keep travel times lower.

Captuure is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

Please mention the word LOVED when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMy4yMzguMTE4Ljgw). This is a feature to avoid fake spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and instantly see they're human.

Gain access to transparent salary bands AND mentorship to grow your career

Collaborate with like-minded tech junkies

Build new tools with JavaScript, React, Ruby and much more!

Commit is a VC-backed remote-first community and accelerator program for Canadian senior software engineers looking to join some of Silicon Valley’s most innovative startups as one of the first engineers.

We work exclusively with startups who are financially stable, have great salaries, use an exciting tech stack, champion diversity and inclusion and care about supporting your growth. We provide all the info you need so you can make the right decision and continue to cultivate your craft.

So how does this work?

  1. Apply to our Engineering Partner program

  2. Go through a brief 3-step interview process with Commit. Learn more here.

  3. If you’re accepted into the program, you will be paid a full salary while we work together to match you to a startup.

  4. Once matched, you work with a startup for 3 months. If you’re happy, you can stay with them; if not, we’ll work together to find a better match.

Throughout this process, you gain access to our large network of software developers. Curious about what it's like to join a startup as the first engineer? Looking for the best course on Rust? Running into an issue with Terraform that you can't solve? Someone in the community has been in your shoes and can help. We’re run by engineers for engineers.

Read more about us before you decide:

What we offer during the program:

  • Full time paid employment as an Engineering Partner

  • Base salary of $115K to $140K CAD depending on experience

Our Preferred Tech Stack:

  • FE: One/some of: Vue.js, React, Redux

  • BE: One/some of: Golang, Node.js, Ruby/Rails, Python/Django (MVC!)

We believe that language is a tool. It’s more important that you have experience with one or more modern coding languages, than with any particular language itself.

You might also have:

  • Understanding of basic DevOps: AWS, GCP, Docker, Kubernetes/Terraform, CI/CD

  • Understanding of RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL

  • Understanding of cloud-native distributed systems and microservices

Do you want to develop software that helps scientists, doctors, historians, and all other kinds of researchers discover breakthroughs? Join our small, fully-remote software development team to build software that connects scholars of all disciplines with the peer-reviewed journal articles they need to advance their research.

Since our remote-first company's founding in 2011, Third Iron has created the industry-leading software services BrowZine and LibKey.  Our users include millions of students, doctors, industry researchers, and scientists affiliated with over 1,300 libraries at universities, hospitals, corporations, and government departments across 36 countries including places like Stanford University, NASA, Mayo Clinic, NHS England, and University of Hong Kong.

In a refreshing change from advertising-dependent tech companies or those who sell user data, we instead have a business-to-business model. We sell our subscription-based services to libraries that may be used by anyone affiliated with them. We do not sell user data.  Our focus is on building the best software to enable research that changes the world.

Your Role

As a Senior Full Stack Software Engineer, you will help with all aspects of the development lifecycle: initial architectural approaches, coding the automated tests and implementation, and reviewing changes with your teammates. Our product owners have a deep understanding of our customer needs and wants. The dev team collaborates with them closely to help get clear guidance and ensure what we build has maximum positive impact to our users in the world of libraries and peer-reviewed research journals.

Our remote-first company has been building software for over 11 years in a fully-distributed manner, so you’ll be joining a team with plenty of experience putting into practice what works well remotely, and avoiding what doesn’t. We try to build our products with an eye on the long term, since the new features and products we build are typically maintained by us for years into the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to our Third Iron tools and backend systems, written primarily in Node.js and Postgres, and used by our operations team to manage large amounts of data from over 1,300 library customers
  • Help shape and build our APIs, used both internally and by third parties, written in Node.js and adopting many concepts from JSON API 1.0
  • Increase your experience and knowledge of Node.js, Postgresql, Elasticsearch, CouchDB, continuous integration, and load testing. Learn about all the tools we use at our StackShare
  • Optimize and help scale our Heroku and AWS cloud-based systems as our customer base grows to maintain solid performance for all users
  • Opportunities to assist with our web app clients, BrowZine and LibKey, that are built with Ember, and our browser extension LibKey Nomad, built with React

What We’re Looking For

  • SQL experience; we use Postgres to store the majority of our data, and maintaining very fast APIs and internal processes is important to us. Bonus if you have NoSQL experience, such as ElasticSearch or CouchDB
  • NodeJS and JavaScript interest and experience
  • Strong communication skills – since we are a remote team, clear, timely, and frequent communication is essential
  • Experience writing automated tests alongside your code – we rely on numerous automated tests to help avoid regressions, both at the acceptance and unit level
  • Source control expertise, ideally git
  • Self-motivation and comfort working independently, which we've found is important for remote working
  • Interest in lifelong learning, including learning new technologies. We embrace the tools and techniques that help us build great software which lets us sleep soundly at night, with high confidence that our users are having a delightful experience and our servers are not catching fire
  • People with U.S. work authorizations.  (We are looking for a full-time developer to join our team, so please, no software development firms looking to hire out contractors - we're interested in talking directly to software developers)

Working at Third Iron

Third Iron is a small company of 25 employees, and our growth and success have been fueled by the passionate, curious people who work here. We value input and feedback while looking to minimize the interruptions of meetings, report writing, and internal emails.

Understanding that work is just part of your life, Third Iron also provides benefits including health, dental, long-term disability, paid time-off, home-office stipend, and more. It's why most employees who work at Third Iron spend many years of their careers here.  You could, too!

At REO we want to help real estate brokers, owners and buyers find and trade properties easier than ever. We believe that easy-to-use software is key in this complex and fast-paced industry.

Your responsibilities

👩🏻‍💻 Take ownership during refinement and planning to break down new epics into small deliverables for the BE team.

🛳️ Ship features every two weeks or quicker.

💻 Are responsible for the quality of the Laravel API and proposing strategic and lasting improvements.

💪🏽 Actively contribute to the REO code base and deliver user value with your code.

Your profile

🏗️ You are driven by real impact of your work. You don't require a large team to make things happen.

🙋🏽 You strive for customer value when balancing new features, technical debt and incremental improvements.

💡 You consider the perspective of the user and company when proposing new ideas. Why we do something is just as important as what we do.

📏 You set code standards through your work and mentor fellow backend engineers.

The Back-End team

Currently we are three engineers taking care of architecting, implementing and monitoring core functionalities. Each engineer takes projects from A to Z including initial exploration, system design documentation and implementation. Each of us in the team has very different interests within our working domain, this way there is always room for nerdy discussions.

Culture

Hey there! I’m Brandon Bayer, the founder and CEO of Flightcontrol. We are 4 person startup fresh out of Y Combinator that’s building something truly special. More than fundamentally changing the way most people deploy applications, we’re intentionally building the most life-giving and fulfilling company possible. My cofounder Mina and I care so deeply about building a company that helps people become the fullest version of who they are and helps them thrive personally and professionally.

Flightcontrol is solving the huge gap between Heroku and AWS

Today there is a big tradeoff between Heroku (and it’s derivatives) which is easy to use but very limiting and restricting, and AWS which gives you full power and control but is a nightmare to use. We solve this by providing a layer on top of a company’s own AWS account that makes it very easy to use while still letting them pop the hood and leverage the raw power of AWS directly.

The classic problem with things like Heroku is that you inevitably reach a point of scale at which you outgrow Heroku and have to undergo a time consuming and expensive migration to AWS directly. So our approach is to bring the Heroku style DX (or better!) to your own AWS account. With Heroku you have their custom layer of infrastructure between you and AWS. But with Flightcontrol, there is no custom infra — it’s just pure AWS and your services can scale as much as AWS can scale.

Our approach is to take the best AWS services (like Fargate and RDS), make them extremely simple and easy to use, and give you the very best in class setup possible. For example, we automatically configure Cloudfront in front of Fargate services. And since you own the infra, you can go into AWS to tweak and customize anything you need.

So far our customers are in love with the product, saying things like “you’ve nailed the simplicity without sacrificing control” and “this is probably the best way I’ve ever deployed my software”.

  • Last fall we started building Flightcontrol, got accepted into the Y Combinator Winter 2022 batch, and raised a $1M preseed round.
  • We launched the second week of January and now already have 19 paying customers live in production. Most of these are companies with brownfield apps that they’ve migrated from Heroku, Render, Vercel, or their own custom AWS setups, including kubernetes.
  • In March, we grew from 11 to 19 paying customers and doubled the AWS resources we’re managing for customers.
  • Here at the end of March, we just finished the Y Combinator batch and completed raising an additional $2.2M seed round.
  • We have amazing investors, including Matt Biilmann (Netlify), Doron Sherman (VP of DevRel, Cloudinary), Randall Kent (Cypress.io), Zach Holman (#9 at Github), Nader Dabit (former AWS), Brian Douglas, Swizec, and Shawn Wang (swyx).

Meet Our Current Team of 4

  • Brandon Bayer, Founder and CEO. Dayton, Ohio. You might know me as the creator of Blitz.js. Although highly technical, my strengths are product design and marketing. My superpower is simplicity. My top values that define everything I do are excellence, equality, inclusion, and freedom. Outside of work I love traveling, flying airplanes and helicopters, and rock climbing. My intention is to be the very best CEO and manager in the world. With a goal to build the best company to work for. I’m not here to be a boss. I’m here to support you and help make your dreams come true.
  • Mina Abadir, Cofounder. Toronto, Canada. Mina is the technical genius that brings our core product features to life. He’s deeply authentic and caring, loves to laugh, and greatly enjoys a good video game. His superpower is empathy.
  • Aleksandra Sikora, Lead Blitz Maintainer. Poland. She joined last fall as our first employee, mostly maintaining Blitz but has also been helping tremendously on Flightcontrol. She’s incredibly intelligent and talented, and loves traveling, hiking, and rock climbing. She brings so much joy and life to our team!
  • Dillon Raphael, Senior Blitz Maintainer. Toronto, Canada. Dillon just joined the last week of March! He has such passion and drive to create amazing things in the world. And on top of that, he’s incredibly sincere and loyal. He brings so much passion and connection to our team!
  • You?

We need an engineer with AWS devops/SRE experience to help us build our platform product

We need someone who is experienced with AWS. Ideally you have even more experience than Mina and will be able to bring tremendous value to both the design and implementation of features.

You will work alongside my cofounder Mina to develop our core platform functionality. You can see our public roadmap here. There are a ton of hard problems you’ll help us solve. Our core product boils down to a very sophisticated orchestration system that integrates with many different services, currently all in AWS but we’ll also be adding third-party integrations too.

Ideally you have both wide and deep AWS expertise. Or at a minimum wide with some deep experience and with ability to get deeper on anything that’s required. It’s a bonus if you already have any AWS certifications.

We use Typescript and Temporal to build all our AWS integrations. Temporal is an incredible technology that came out of Uber for managing complex backend workflows. It simplifies complexity in a similar way to how async/await simplifies promises and callbacks. We don’t expect you to know Temporal — we’ll help you get up to speed on it as much as you need.

For Flightcontrol features, we usually use a Cloudformation stack to create the initial service, but after that we use the AWS Typescript SDK to make direct API calls for updating and changing services.

To summarize, you should have:

  • Knowledge with wide range of AWS services
  • Ability to use multiple AWS services to build complex solutions
  • Good working knowledge of security and networking best practices
  • Experience with both server and serverless infrastructure
  • Know your way through Docker
  • Know Typescript or have the desire and ability to learn Typescript
  • AWS certification is ++

What We Expect of You

  • Bring as much of your personal self to work as you are comfortable with
  • Do your very best work
  • Have a life outside work, whether it’s hobbies, side projects, reading, etc. As long as you have something and work isn’t all you live for
  • Complete honesty and integrity
  • Be creative and innovative
  • Be involved in our product planning, bringing your own ideas for what we should be doing and how we should be doing it.
  • Help give our customers the very best experience possible. We all help with customer support.
  • Be a leader. As one of our first employees, our future hires will look up to you and learn from you.
  • Be human. We don’t expect you to be perfect. We all have a basement of bad experiences, insecurities, and anxieties. Our hope is that being part of our team is a huge beam of sunshine in your life that encourages and empowers you to overcome the challenges in the rest of your life.

This Job Is Not For You If

  • You are not interested in growing professionally or personally
  • You need or want someone to tell you exactly what to do
  • You don’t want to bring any of your personal self to work. We’re actually totally ok with that, but the rest of us bring a lot of ourselves to work so that might be uncomfortable for you.
  • You aren’t ok with with the company growing in team size, first slowly, but then increasing in speed over the next 1-2 years. When we enter that growth stage, you’ll have to learn to give away your Legos and work on bigger and more impactful things every so many months.

Salary & Benefits

  • $145,000 USD salary
  • Generous Equity via Stock Options, as employee #3 or #4
  • Fully Remote
  • Health Insurance Fully Paid For
  • 32 Hour Work Week - More and more companies are finding that people accomplish the same amount of work in 32 hours as in 40 hours. Because it's nearly impossible to be fully productive at tech work for 8 hours every day. For most people, about 6 hours of focused work per day is the limit.
  • Minimum 4 Weeks PTO - It's critical to have good work life balance, so you must take at least 4 weeks PTO each year.
  • Unlimited Sick Leave - If you are feeling crappy, you aren't going to be doing your best work. So rest, get better, then come back energized.
  • Menstrual Leave - There's no use trying to be productive when you are suffering. Take the day(s) off as PTO, no explanation needed.
  • 2+ In-Person Company Gatherings Per Year
  • Open Source - We are passionate about open-source and encourage you to contribute on company time to anything that will benefit the company
  • Equipment - We'll make sure you have all the equipment you need to have an ergonomic, productive environment, including a standing desk and external monitors.
  • Conferences - We're a big fan of in-person conference experiences, and encourage you to speak at and attend them. We'll fully pay for you to attend 2 conferences per year.
  • Education - Budget for books or courses that are at least tangentially related to your work
