Vox Media, LLC is hiring a Remote Senior Policy Politics & Ideas Editor
\nVox is seeking an experienced editor to oversee a team of writers who explore and explain the impact of ideas on global and American culture, politics, and daily life. This editor should be comfortable leading a diverse team covering a wide range of subjects, including but not limited to international news, domestic politics and policy, race, culture, and more.\n\n \n\nThis position will work under the editorial director for policy, politics and ideas, but this role will not be focused on news coverage of political or policy developments. Weโre looking for an editor who can help put the day-to-day in perspective and see around the corner to help readers understand influential ideas and arguments, in formats ranging from quick daily pieces to in-depth, argument-driven (but still reported) features and essays. \n\n \n\nInstead of writing about, say, the latest developments in the Middle East in an incremental way, we want writers to find a sharp angle that cuts through the conversation, or a step-back explainer that gives the reader a comprehensive understanding of the region, or an argument-driven reported essay that makes the case for a certain policy. Instead of reporting the daily back-and-forth on a bill in Congress, we want an editor to assign pieces that zoom out to the underlying problem, or offer a crisp perspective on what the fight says about the state of the American political system. In other words, we want distinctive angles on the day's news, something that adds value to what's already being reported in dozens of other outlets.\n\n \n\nThis editor should be comfortable working with different formats and thinking creatively about the best way to approach major events and conversations of today, while guiding writers to do entrepreneurial intellectual work to find the emerging ideas that will shape those events tomorrow. \n\n \n\nYou should think about news and sourcing broadly โ how can ideas in history, social science, activism or legal academia help us understand whatโs happening now? Which thinkers are doing important work that will reshape mainstream discourse or shed light on major events? We're looking for a wide-ranging intellect who is comfortable in the world of ideas, broadly conceived. \n\n \nWHO WE ARE\n\nVox candidly shepherds audiences through politics and policy, business and pop culture, food, science, and everything else that matters.\n\nVox is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about whatโs now, whatโs next, and whatโs possible.\n\nAs a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.\n\n \nWHAT YOUโLL DO\n\n\n* Set the broader editorial vision and daily coverage priorities for a small team of reporters\n\n* Conceptualize, assign, and edit pieces rooted in reporting and research, including explainers, argument-driven essays, and features\n\n* Stay on top of the news, both foreign and domestic, to find the angles that will lead to truly distinctive analytical, contextual, and deeply informed journalism\n\n* Manage and lead our team of writers, with an eye toward expanding our freelance stable\n\n* Find opportunities for collaboration with Voxโs audio and video teams and other editors across the Vox newsroom\n\n\n\n\n \nWHO YOU ARE\n\n\n* 5 yearsโ experience editing\n\n* Strong leadership, management, and editing skills\n\n* Analytical rigor. We want an editor with an ability to pressure-test our own writersโ arguments and steelman opposing ones. We want an editor who can confidently edit pieces that explain ideas and/or stake out intellectual claims, and who is eager to assign and edit pieces that embrace nuance and complicate narratives without sacrificing clarity. \n\n* Excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to bring analysis and sharp angles to news stories\n\n* Familiarity with or interest in a range of subject areas -- history, political science, economics, foreign policy and IR, science and tech, among others. To be clear, expertise in any (let alone all) of these fields is not an expectation. Weโre seeking a curious, peripatetic mind to guide a team with a range of intellectual passions.\n\n* Experience editing/familiarity with foreign coverage is a plus. Though this is not primarily a foreign affairs editing position, we do expect our writers to be able to analyze and offer perspectives on developments in the wider world.\n\n\n\n\nIf you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! Weโve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.\n\n \nWHERE YOUโLL WORK\n\nThis job is remote.\n\n \nWHY VOX MEDIA?\nWHAT WE OFFER\n\nThis is a permanent, full-time position. Vox Media, LLC is hiring a Remote Future Perfect Fellowship Vox.com
\nFuture Perfect covers the world through a particular prism: What are the best ways to do good in this world? What are the stories that are both important โ meaning they affect large numbers of people โ yet are undercovered by the media at large? And what are the solutions to those problems that have actual traction in the world we live in? \n\nInspired in part by the philosophy of effective altruism โ but not beholden to it or any other movement โ Future Perfect strives to shine a light on neglected stories that have, or will have, a profound impact on the lives of billions of humans and animals.\n\nSince its launch in 2018, Future Perfect has developed a loyal following for its idiosyncratic, mission-driven approach to news. Among our key subject areas include global poverty and public health, the catastrophic and existential threats that we face, and animal welfare and factory farming. We cover the philosophies and practices surrounding philanthropy and altruism, and the moral and ethical questions that underpin individual and policy choices.\n\nTrue to the name of the vertical, we constantly ask ourselves: In 10, 20, 30 years, what will we look back on and wish we devoted more time covering? Then we go ahead and do those stories today.\n\nThis fall, thanks to a generous grant, weโre hiring three fellows to help us ensure Future Perfect is telling the most important stories to our audience and approaching those stories with nuance and discernment. The fellowship is a one-year, full-time position.\n\nThe Future Perfect Fellowship is a perfect opportunity for emerging journalism talent, subject-matter experts looking to move into journalism โ especially in our key areas, like animal welfare, AI, biotechnology and global development/health โ or established journalists who want to switch beats or gain expertise on a new platform. \n\nThe fellowship will be a year-long program to receive extensive training and mentorship along with opportunities above and beyond that of traditional entry-level positions. Aside from intensive feedback from editors, fellows will also have dedicated mentors, exclusive networking opportunities, skills training sessions featuring journalists from Vox Media and other outlets, and the chance to attend one professional conference per year.\n\n \nWHO WE ARE\n\nVox candidly shepherds audiences through politics and policy, business and pop culture, food, science, and everything else that matters.\n\nVox is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. A major factor is being able to understand and articulate what makes Future Perfectโs approach different from that of other verticals in subjects like climate change or health that may crossover with our material. Bonus points for demonstrated expertise or previous work in one or more of the above subjects \n\n* An interest in explanatory journalism of the kind long-practiced by Vox.\n\n* Previous newsroom experience (including college papers) or comparable experience in another field โ we have had great luck turning lawyers, think tank staffers, scientists and other subject-matter experts into great journalists\n\n* Tenacious curiosity and a creative approach to storytelling, including an interest in telling stories about the world through the Future Perfect lens\n\n\n\n\n \n\nIf you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! Vox Media, LLC is hiring a Remote Future Perfect Fellow Vox.com
\nFuture Perfect covers the world through a particular prism: What are the best ways to do good in this world? Inspired and informed by effective altruism โ a philosophical and social movement dedicated to doing the most good possible for the world โ Future Perfect strives to shine a light on neglected stories that have, or will have, a profound impact on the lives of billions of humans and animals.\n\nAmong our key subject areas include global poverty and public health, the catastrophic and existential threats that we face, and animal welfare and factory farming. We cover the philosophies and practices surrounding philanthropy and altruism, and the moral and ethical questions that underpin individual and policy choices.\n\nSince its launch in 2018, Future Perfect has developed a loyal following for its idiosyncratic, mission-driven approach to news. Our coverage is animated by a baseline question: whatโs truly important that we need to cover โ not whatโs in the news, not whatโs trending on Twitter, but the stories that we think truly matter for human and animal lives? True to the name of the vertical, we constantly ask ourselves: In 10, 20, 30 years, what will we look back on and wish we devoted more time covering? Then we go ahead and do those stories today.\n\nThis fall, thanks to a generous grant, weโre hiring three fellows to help us ensure Future Perfect is telling the most important stories to our audience and approaching those stories with nuance and discernment. The fellowship is a one-year, full-time, position with a salary of $72,000 (with benefits).\n\nThe Future Perfect Fellowship is a perfect opportunity for emerging journalism talent, subject-matter experts looking to move into journalism, or established journalists who want to switch beats or gain expertise on a new platform.\n\nThe fellowship will be a year-long program to receive extensive training and mentorship along with opportunities above and beyond that of traditional entry-level/intern positions. Aside from intensive feedback from editors, fellows will also have dedicated mentors, exclusive networking opportunities, skills training sessions featuring journalists from Vox Media and other outlets, and the chance to attend one professional conference per year, such as NABJ, NAHJ, SRCCON, NICAR, or EA Global.\n\n \nWHO WE ARE\n\nVox candidly shepherds audiences through politics and policy, business and pop culture, food, science, and everything else that matters.\n\nVox is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.\n\n \nWHAT YOUโLL DO\n\n\nProduce distinct Future Perfect content\n\nParticipate in story meetings and pitch fresh ideas\n\nWork with editors to shape and improve content\n\nExplore ways to tell Future Perfect stories across other Vox platforms, including audio and video\n\nParticipate in skill shares, training, and mentorship opportunities with fellowship cohort from across the company, including fellows from The Verge and New York Magazine\n\n\n\n\n \nWHO YOU ARE\n\n\nA demonstrated passion for and familiarity with Future Perfectโs areas of coverage, including global poverty and public health; climate change, pandemics, and other catastrophic threats to humanity; animal welfare; moral philosophy; effective altruism more broadly; and philanthropy \n\nAn interest in explanatory journalism\n\nPrevious newsroom experience (including college papers) or comparable experience in another field โ we have had great luck turning lawyers, think tank staffers, scientists and other subject-matter experts into great journalists\n\nTenacious curiosity and a creative approach to storytelling, including an interest in telling stories about the world through the Future Perfect lens\n\n\n\n\nIf you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! Weโve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.\n\n \nWHERE YOUโLL WORK\n\nThis job is remote. \nNew York Magazine and Grub Street are looking for a full-time writer to spend a year eating anything and everything in New York City. In January, weโll launch โThe Year I Ate New York,โ a column and weekly newsletter devoted to one mad, restaurant-obsessed authorโs food adventures throughout 2022. This role, โDiner at Large,โ is designed for a seasoned and โ we really canโt over-emphasize this โ hungry writer who is ambitious enough to tell the story of New York City through 50 gastronomical installments. \n\nCan you describe the most life-changing noodles in each of New Yorkโs Chinatowns? Does the idea of hosting 14 consecutive dinner parties to once and for all figure out the best caterer in town thrill you? Do you constantly wonder what it would be like to eat a burger at the bar of the New York Yacht Club, fried clams at every seafood restaurant on City Island, and pearls of ikura from Manhattanโs most clandestine sushi counters? Ever considered ordering the mutton chop and the steak-and-lobster duo at Keens? Are you excited to spend ages eating snacks after school with Flushing teens at the New World Mall? \n\nThe position pays competitively and comes with a hefty expense account. Here are the specifics of who we are looking for: Someone with quite a bit of prior, professional writing experience. Someone who lives in (and has a pretty deep familiarity with most corners of) New York City. Someone who is not repulsed by the prospect of eating two full dinners in the same night. Someone who is a food fanatic (though not a critic) and an astute social anthropologist. Someone who has the stamina to go out to eatโฆ all the time. \n\nYou can apply by sending us a resume, relevant clips, and, in lieu of a traditional cover letter, 800 words describing one recent night out somewhere unforgettable to show us why we must hire you for this frankly insane opportunity.\n\n \n\nAbout working at Vox Media:\n\nAs the leading independent modern media company, Vox Media ignites conversations and influences culture.
