SkyVerge is looking for a talented full-stack senior PHP engineer to join our team and help build our portfolio of WordPress plugins for WooCommerce. You'll write code that helps power mission-critical tools for millions of online stores.\n\n**The Role**\n\nYouโll focus on building new features and maintaining existing code, while also helping with code reviews and customer support. With over 60 different plugins, thereโs a wide variety of work. You might spend time on some complicated frontend interactions using JS, then switch focus to working with a tricky external REST API for a while, and later work on adding unit/acceptance tests to our framework code.\n\nYouโll have the opportunity to really dive into a problem and understand it before crafting a well-engineered, high quality solution. We believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time to think and code.\n\nOur plugins are built on top of WordPress and designed to work with WooCommerce, so we use PHP 5.3+ (moving soon to PHP 5.6 minimum) and we write all new JS in ES6. We follow a superset of the WordPress coding standards and actively invest in tooling & testing to improve both the quality of our products and the happiness of our team building them. \n\nWe work primarily through GitHub and Slack, so you should be able clearly express your ideas via comments and messages. All new code is tested and peer-reviewed, so youโll be able to both learn from the rest of the team and share your knowledge.\n\nAs one of our senior engineers, the team will look to you for advice and direction. Youโll help shape our best practices, decide on libraries & tooling, and refactor older or underperforming parts of the codebase. Youโll also be responsible for moving your projects forward, communicating your progress and milestones with others, and clearly documenting your work.\n\n**Process**\n\nAfter an initial screening, youโll get an email with a few questions to answer. Following that, youโll have a few 45 minute phone chats with different people on our team to learn more about you and answer any questions you have about the position and company. \n\nThe most qualified candidates will then be invited to complete a short one-day research project. If this goes well, weโll invite you to the final stage of our evaluation process: the trial project. During this 1-2 week period, youโll work closely with our team as a paid contractor to develop & ship a small feature. This gives you an opportunity to make sure you enjoy the work and the team, and it gives us an opportunity to evaluate your work. Weโll have regular chats each week to share feedback and make sure weโre on the same page. At the end of the project, if all goes well, youโll be offered a permanent position. ๐ \n\n**Benefits**\n\nHere are some benefits we're happy to offer to our team members:\n\n* Competitive salary\n* Annual incentive for meeting team and company goals\n* 27 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June ๐)\n* Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents)\n* 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents)\n* Up to 8 weeks paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers\n* Work flexible hours from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection\n* Tools (hardware/software) to help you be productive\n* Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences)\n* Home office or co-working allowance\n* A Kindle to help you keep learning\n\n*We support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class. We believe when we work together as a team of different views, experiences, and ideas, we can build amazing things.*\n\n# Responsibilities\n
**Here are some things you may do on a given day:**\n\n* Research and write a pitch to refactor the data model for our shipping extension\n* Refactor an underperforming class after profiling it in your local environment\n* Troubleshoot an issue with our Memberships plugin by deep-diving into the content restriction class\n* Analyze a slow SQL query and suggest ways to improve it\n* Construct a detailed, multi-step data migration to move data from a custom post type to a custom table, write unit tests for it, and manually user test / QA it.\n* Review a pull request from another team member for readability, maintainability, and adherence to standards, and provide suggested improvements\n* Review new API documentation for one of our integration plugins and draft a story to upgrade to it\n\n**On the first day you will:**\n\n* Meet your team and get familiar with how we work\n* Setup your local environment and tooling\n* Commit a small tweak to a plugin and open a pull request for peer review\n\n**In the first week you will:**\n\n* Develop, QA, review, and ship a small feature improvement\n* Participate in code review for a teammateโs code\n* Help a team member with fixing a bug\n\n**In the first month you will:**\n\n* Work closely with the product team to ship a large feature\n* Participate in your first support rotation week and help our support team with escalated issues\n* Handle deploying a set of plugin releases using our internal tools\n* Publish a retrospective on your first large project to share successes & planned improvements for the next project\n \n\n# Requirements\nYou love solving engineering challenges in the most pragmatic way possible. You write code that's clear, readable, and standards-compliant. More importantly, you keep the end user in mind and love getting feedback from customers to help improve our products.\n\nFinally, you canโt wait to join a small team that loves their work as much as you do, affords the opportunity to work on challenging & interesting projects, continuously learn and improve, and constantly ship your work. Youโre an excellent writer and can communicate effectively whether drafting up a bug report, chatting in Slack, editing a wiki page, or drafting a retrospective. You know that code is about communication and explaining your thought process clearly goes hand-in-hand.\n\nOur team is fully-remote and we communicate primarily through Slack, Clubhouse, Google Docs, Basecamp, and weekly stand-ups via Zoom (a few short meetings) โ we believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time thatโs free of distractions.\n\nAs a remote team, we believe that regular meetups are invaluable for getting to know each other better, so you should be available for 1-2 company-paid team trips per year. Curious about what those are like? Check out our recap of our last team retreat ([SkyTrip](http://www.skyverge.com/blog/skytrip-2018-recap/)), which brought the entire team out to Lake Tahoe, California for a week. Itโs a plus if you think (like we do) that bears are absolutely the coolest animals in the forest.\n\nThis is a full-time, salaried position, but hours are flexible. We know your work will speak for itself with commits, issues closed, and wiki edits.\n \n\nPlease mention the words **FINISH HOBBY CARPET** when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMTguMTE3LjE3Mi40MQ==). Youโll be coaching support and engineering team members on tone and process, doing everything from reviewing drafts, spot-reading replies, assisting in de-escalating difficult threads, to tracking and improving team metrics on replies, response times, and response quality.\n\nWe know that the best learning and understanding comes from hands-on experience, so youโll also be rolling up your sleeves to assist with support and pre-sales questions across our product suite. We have over 70 different products, so youโre excited that thereโs always something new to learn.\n\nYouโll have the opportunity to dive in and question everything: is what weโre doing effective? How are we measuring success? What standards are we setting? How can we improve and unify process across all products we support? Are our tools supporting our goals?\n\nWe expect that our head of support will be pushing our team forward on customer service best-practices, impeccable tone and voice, accuracy in replies, great supporting documentation, maintaining an internal knowledge base, and overall ensuring that our organizationโs support runs as efficiently and seamlessly as a Swiss watch. You can do this on your own, or work with a team to drive a project forward. You question existing practices and seek out the โbestโ way to do things.\n\nTo succeed in this role, youโll have:\n\n- excellent written communication and native-level English fluency. Hiya. Weโre SkyVerge and we love eCommerce. Our products help merchants manage and grow their online stores, all the way from boutique corner shop to Fortune 500 retailers. Weโre looking for two Customer Support Specialists to join our fully-distributed team and help support our entire suite of products.\n\n## The Role\nYouโll be the first point of contact for our customers, helping them with problems, and answering questions. As part of a small team, you'll likely get your hands dirty with a little bit of everything. \n\nHere are some things you may do on a given day:\n\n\n- Assist customers by troubleshooting technical problems and escalating to the engineering team as needed\n- Answer pre-sales questions, billing & account changes, and other feedback from customers\n- Monitor social media and forums where customers may have questions or issues with our products and get them the help they need\n- Help with customer onboarding by installing and modifying code on customersโ stores\n- Write technical documentation and other content so customerโs can help themselves\n- Help our engineering & product teams to identify areas where we can improve the customer experience\n- Document and optimize our support process to improve customer satisfaction\n\nWith over 70 products across the three eCommerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads) that we support, there's plenty to learn. Youโll be expected to own the support queue for a set of products for a week before rotating to another set. Weโre aiming for you to have broad knowledge (mile-wide, inch-deep) and work closely with the product & engineering team to tackle more technical or in-depth questions that go beyond your knowledge.\n\n## You\nYou have that unique combination of technical aptitude and empathy for the user. Youโre comfortable with code but prefer to be customer-facing. Youโre self-driven with a sense of urgency and draw satisfaction from going above and beyond to provide solutions. Youโre an excellent communicator and have the ability to thrive in a distributed environment. Perhaps most importantly, you have a willingness to learn.\n\nTo succeed in this position, you will have:\n\n- solid understanding of HTML / CSS\n- Working knowledge of JavaScript\n- Native-level fluency in English (Are you fluent in other languages? Tell us! We love being able to support customers in their native language.)\n- Outstanding written communication and interpersonal skills\n- Boundless curiosity for our products and our customers\n- Ability to thrive in a remote environment (along with a reliable internet connection)\n\nItโs helpful if you have:\n\n- Experience with PHP / Ruby (or other programming languages)\n- Experience with WordPress\n- Experience with Shopify / WooCommerce (or other eCommerce platforms)\n- Experience supporting SaaS products\n- Experience supporting downloadable software (especially in the LAMP stack)\n\nOur team is fully-remote and we communicate primarily through Slack, GitHub, and weekly stand-ups on Monday via Zoom (a few short meetings on Monday) โ we believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time thatโs free of distractions.\n\nAs a remote team, we believe that regular meet-ups are invaluable for getting to know each other better, so you should be available for 1-2 company-paid team trips per year. Curious about these trips? Check out our recap of our last team retreat (SkyTrip) to get an idea of what theyโre like.\n\nThis is a full-time, salaried position, but hours are flexible. We know your work will speak for itself with thoughtful replies to customers, wiki edits, and published documentation.\n\n## Process\nQualified candidates will get an email with a few questions to answer via email. Following that, youโll have a few 30 minute phone chats with different people on our team to learn more about you and answer any questions you have about the position and company. \n\nIf this goes well, weโll invite you to join our team and start your 30-day Bootcamp. This is a trial period where youโll work full-time as a contractor, or part-time on nights/weekends if you already have a full-time position. This gives you an opportunity to make sure you enjoy the work and the team, and it gives us an opportunity to evaluate your work. Weโll have regular chats each week to share feedback and make sure weโre on the same page. At the end of the 30 days, youโll be offered a permanent position ๐ \n\nBenefits\nHere are some benefits we're excited to offer to our team members:\n\n- Competitive salary\n- Annual incentive for meeting team and company goals\n- 25 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June ๐)\n- Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents)\n- 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents)\n- Work from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection\n- The tools (hardware/software) you need to be productive\n- Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences)\n- Home office or co-working allowance\n- A Kindle to help you keep learning\n\nWe support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class.
