Remote Senior Automation Engineer\nXilis, Inc. is an innovation-driven biotech company developing its proprietary MicroOrganoSphere (“MOS”) Technology for functional precision oncology. Xilis’ MOS Technology enables rapid and scalable generation of patient tumor models that retain patient-specific tumor biology and tumor microenvironment, representing one of the most translationally-relevant ex vivo technologies for precision oncology drug discovery and development. Your expertise in liquid handling automation, specifically with Hamilton liquid handlers, will be instrumental in enabling rapid experimentation and process optimization. Collectively, Xilis aims to harness its MOS Platform to enable development of the most effective therapeutics and guide them to the right patients at the right time.\n\n\nRole\nWe are looking for a motivated and innovative scientist / sr. scientist to join our growing team to execute critical experiments. In this role, the scientist / sr. scientist hired will support collaborative projects with biotech and pharma companies and academic institutions focused on leveraging MOS technology in the immuno-oncology space. The selected candidate will work very closely with thought leaders in the fields of cancer immune biology and assay development and will perform research, participate in detailed analysis, draw conclusions, and formulate next steps / experimental designs. The successful candidate will present data and lead scientific conversations internally and with partners. The successful candidate will bring exceptional skills to the laboratory and an ability to independently run large and complex experiments, and will have prior experience in primary cell culture involving immune co-culture assays, immune cell characterization by flow cytometry, cell viability assays, and a demonstrated ability to operate lab instrumentation. He or she will be highly motivated, have a strong work ethic, and have excellent communication skills. The candidate will report to Xilis’ Director of Research & Development.\n \nThe candidate will have the opportunity to fundamentally advance precision cancer care by developing cutting-edge scientific methods into Xilis’ technology portfolio. In the next few months and years, the candidate will:\n\n\n\nResponsibilities\n* Design and run large and complex experiments and develop novel assays\n* Personally spearhead the most critical assays and experiments necessary to support ongoing development efforts\n* Participate in meetings with scientific experts from partner organizations. Present data.\n* Carefully maintain meticulous records of experimental designs, execution details, and results\n* Organize and transparently present experimental results to the cross-functional team\n* Participate in project planning, data analysis, and other scientific activities\n* Support laboratory operations, troubleshooting of issues, SOP development, and maintenance\n* Operate successfully in a rapidly changing, fast-paced, mission-driven environment\n* Share thoughts and ideas on how to improve performance in the lab\n* Perform support tasks across the company as needs arise\n* Collaborate and co-develop assays with our Xilis BV team in the Netherlands\n\n\n\nRequirements\n* Ph.D. degree in immunology, oncology or a related field\n* 3+ years of postdoctoral laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting\n* Experience with 3D organoid cultures, primary immune cell cultures, ELISA, immunofluorescence, and confocal microscopy is desirable\n* Extensive tissue culture experience and flow cytometry are a must\n* A proven track record of independently and successfully running complex experiments\n* Hands-on experience with processing and handling of primary tissue samples\n* A strong enthusiasm for being in the laboratory to personally run experiments\n* A strong sense of commitment, integrity and team spirit\n* Experience and interest in a high-growth startup, where communication is key\n* Being flexible on working schedules and tasks\n* Open to engage proactively in scientific discussions\n* Identifying scientific gaps and employing solution-focused approaches\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nXilis was created when its three founders — an engineer, a physician, and a biologist — decided to come together and commercialize their technology to transform cancer care. In this role, the individual hired will partner with world-class scientists and engineers to help develop and refine next-generation 3D models for Xilis’ programs. In a cross-functional team of thought-leaders in the fields of cancer biology, assay development, automation, drug discovery and engineering, the candidate will process samples, gather data, keep meticulous notes, and participate in a detailed analysis of results. Key findings will be used to support assay development and data generation within Xilis’ program structure. In addition, the suitable candidate will help process samples from various clinical sources and support assay development. The successful candidate will bring exceptional skills to the laboratory and an ability to work on large and complex experiments and will have prior experience in primary cell culture and experience with lab instrumentation. He or she will also have strong attention to detail and the integrity to precisely report any deviation or issue observed in the laboratory. The Manufacturing Assembly Technician (contract) will follow assembly drawings, instructions, and bill of materials to assemble our primary instrument and produce related consumables used in its operation. This is a unique opportunity to apply skills and experience in a business that will revolutionize cancer patient care.\n\n\nWe are looking for an individual who has a strong mechanical assembly and wiring background to help build, test, and inspect Xilis’ primary instrument, along with manufacturing and assembly of custom instrument consumables. The instrument is a benchtop medical laboratory device built from over 1500 custom and off-the-shelf parts, and the wiring consists of crimping pins, soldering, and assembling connectors for dozens of custom cables. We work in a fast-paced environment and are continually improving the design and performance of systems. In this role, you will help lead the data analysis in support of novel biopharma and clinical assays at the forefront of cancer therapeutics. You will help define, build, and scale up Xilis’ patient-derived 3D model platform toward drug development and immuno-oncology applications. This role will be embedded within the scientific team at Xilis BV, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. As a founding member of the Netherlands data science team, you will be coordinating and working closely with the onsite laboratory staff as well as our existing international data science experts and will exert experimental design influences on the data you will be analyzing. As such the ideal candidate will have experience with driving data analytics independently, and also experience with cross-functional collaborations. You will tackle some of the most interesting biological and technical questions related to functional precision cancer therapeutics. You will characterize 3D biological systems longitudinally using diverse technologies such as flow cytometry, -omics or brightfield/confocal microscopy experiments. You will lead the design and implementation of pipelines and artificial intelligence algorithms that combine and harness multiple sources of data in order to extract biological and clinical insights.\n\n\nYou will work closely with experimental scientists, device engineers, R&D, business development, software and operations teams to deliver solutions to further precision oncology. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to consult with department representatives, project teams, and management to ensure compliance of deliverables and products. Remote Automation Technician\nBased in Durham, North Carolina, Xilis, Inc. is a biotechnology company developing a precision oncology platform that guides treatment decisions for oncologists to improve cancer care outcomes for patients and supports drug discovery and development for pharmaceutical companies. Xilis’ proprietary MicroOrganoSpheres (MOS) are miniature patient tumors that capture the full microenvironment and heterogeneity and provide an automated and scalable solution. Using MOS, high-throughput automation, and AI-driven algorithms, Xilis is developing a Xilis Response Score™ for the clinic, enabling oncologists to make informed and timely treatment decisions. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a talented team of scientists and research associates, driving the development of novel and high-impact molecular assay products and workflows. You will build the assays that serve as the foundation of the Xilis MicroOrganoSphere (MOS) platform, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring our products meet the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and performance. You will play a strategic role in setting and achieving the scientific goals of the organization, driving the scientific vision, and providing crucial leadership and expertise across portfolio management, research, and development.\nIn addition to driving close internal collaboration across teams, you will collaborate with external partners including KOLs and pharma/biotech executives.\nThis role will be a good fit for a highly motivated dynamic, hands-on individual who understands what it takes to succeed in a startup environment and to lead and expand an incredibly talented team of scientists. \n\n\nKey Responsibilities:\nStrategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive assay development strategy aligned with the company's mission and objectives. Set clear goals and milestones for the assay development team.\n\n\nTeam Management: Manage a diverse and high-performing team of scientists, research associates, and project managers. Foster a collaborative and innovative work culture.\n\n\nR&D Pipeline Management: Oversee the development of molecular assays and testing platforms from concept to market release, ensuring projects are executed on time and within budget. Actively review and adjust priorities, programs, and decisions to optimize delivery against the most value-generating aspects of Xilis’ programs.\n\n\nInnovation and Technology Assessment: Stay current with the latest developments in assay technologies and identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in our product portfolio.\n\n\nRegulatory Compliance: Ensure that all assay development activities adhere to relevant regulatory standards and guidelines, including but not limited to FDA, ISO, and CLIA.\n\n\nCross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate closely with other departments, including Technology Platform, Operations, Quality, Business and Clinical Development to ensure seamless product development and launch.\n\n\nResource Allocation: Manage budgets, resources, and external partnerships to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the assay development process.\n\n\nQuality Control and Assurance: Implement and oversee quality control measures to ensure that all developed assays meet the highest standards of accuracy and reliability.\n\n\nData-driven Product Development: Work with technology and data science teams to generate robust datasets, and interpret and make data-driven decisions to guide product development.\n\n\nIntellectual Property Management: Ensure the protection of intellectual property and the development of a strong patent portfolio.\n\n\n\nQualifications\n* Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology), with a minimum of 10 years of experience in assay development.\n* Proven track record of successfully leading teams in the development and commercialization of molecular assays or related products.\n* Proven track record in building and managing teams of highly skilled scientists and managers of various levels of experience.\n* A deep knowledge of cancer biology and immune-oncology and drug development across different modalities – small molecules, biologics, gene and cell therapy.\n* Familiarity with organoid based models preferred.\n* Experience with cutting-edge technologies, including PCR, NGS, immunoassays, microscopy and related methodologies.\n* In-depth knowledge of the various scientific and technical disciplines (and their integration) related to evaluating and advancing platform and therapeutic development.\n* Experience leading and working collaboratively on cross-functional project teams.\n* Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively.\n* Strategic thinker with a passion for innovation and a commitment to staying at the forefront of scientific advancements.\n* Willingness to lead, act as a player-coach and do what is necessary to meet project and corporate goals.\n\n\n\n\n\nXilis was created when its three founders — an engineer, a physician, and a biologist — decided to come together and commercialize their technology to transform cancer care. The candidate will have a crucial role in maintaining and improving a healthy culture within our environment and generally improve the quality of life and experience of employees at the company and will report to the Head of Operations. The role is twenty-five hours per week and primarily on-site.
