ProPublica is hiring a

Remote Computational Journalist

\nProPublica is seeking a computational journalist to help us uncover abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust. \n\nUltimately, weโ€™re looking for someone who will use technology and data to identify and unlock stories that would otherwise be out of reach. That could be renting a boat to test the Wi-Fi networks at Mar-a-Lago, using the power of programming to fingerprint and cluster propaganda videos, or crunching data from millions of child protective services cases to understand who is most affected by the system. \n\nYouโ€™ll be part of ProPublicaโ€™s data team, working collaboratively with talented journalists throughout our newsroom. We like both quick scoops and ambitious undertakings. Journalism experience and the ability to code are must-haves.\n\nWhat youโ€™ll do at ProPublica:\n\n\n* Find, or build, the data that uncovers stories with an accountability lens. \n\n* Conduct analyses that detect bias, influence and other harms.\n\n* Explain our work and make it reproducible by writing engaging methodologies. \n\n* Develop high-impact investigative projects using code and data analysis as well as interviews, research and on-the-ground reporting.\n\n* Clean, bulletproof and spot-check data that underpins our investigations.\n\n* Scrape websites and wrangle data, including the unstructured, messy kind.\n\n* Consume APIs, including poorly designed ones.\n\n\n\n\nWeโ€™re looking for someone with many of the following skills:\n\n\n* At least four years of experience working on data projects, ideally focused on accountability, in a newsroom.\n\n* Ability to bring an accountability lens to the issues of the day through quick investigations reported over a couple of weeks as well as longer projects that may require a few months (or more) of digging, using data and code to get there.\n\n* Experience building data pipelines and conducting rigorous analysis.\n\n* A solid understanding of the tools of data analysis, such as database management systems, statistics software like R, Google BigQuery, Python/pandas, Jupyter Notebooks, etc.\n\n* Experience with best practices in data journalism, including a keen and careful eye for detail, documentation and reproducibility. \n\n* Experience working with AI and machine learning, including generative AI, large language models and other forms of machine learning.\n\n* Familiarity with public data sources across several beats and experience requesting data through public records requests.\n\n* Comfort spinning many plates. Youโ€™ll need to stay organized, focused and proactive.\n\n* A talent for translating complex topics clearly and compellingly to our audience. \n\n* The self-discipline to work independently, as well as an eagerness to work with teammates and local partner reporters on collaborative projects.\n\n* Ability to travel, as necessary, for assignments, team summits and training.\n\n* A deep desire to work on important accountability stories and an eagerness to help dig for the truth to help spur reform.\n\n\n\n\nThis position is full time with benefits. The team is distributed, so remote applicants anywhere in the U.S. are welcome. For those who prefer working from an office, our headquarters are in New York City, and we have offices in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Chicago; Phoenix; and Berkeley, California.\n\nThe expected salary range for this position is $120,000 to $140,000.\n\nThis is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a personโ€™s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.\n\nWe will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.\n\nQuestions? Send an email to [email protected]. \n\nNo phone calls, please.

ProPublica is hiring a

Remote Deputy Data Editor

\nWeโ€™re looking for a deputy data editor who can set and execute an ambitious vision for the use of data analysis in the ProPublica newsroom. The deputy editor will do this by guiding data journalists as they report groundbreaking investigations; proactively identifying promising uses of data, including developing pitches and data-driven projects; and guarding against errors. We take on ambitious data projects, including analyzing past Ebola outbreaks linked to deforestation in order to predict future ones, showing how wealthy executives make millions on exquisitely timed trades, and crunching data from millions of child protective services cases to understand who is most affected by the system. We want you to help us continue to innovate and elevate our use of data to do compelling, impactful journalism. \n\nYouโ€™ll report to the senior editor for data and news apps and work alongside a second deputy data editor to supervise the team. The two data deputies, along with the deputy news applications editor, will help set the course for ProPublicaโ€™s data journalism.\n\nInterested in the deputy news applications editor role? Weโ€™re hiring for that as well.\n\nAs deputy data editor you will:\n\n\n* Manage data journalists working across the newsroom on high-impact investigations.\n\n* Proactively work to infuse a data mindset across the team and the broader staff by finding angles for data analysis and insights related to major issues of the day.\n\n* Help edit our most complex data stories and play a leading role in editing our data methodologies, ensuring that both the language and the statistical work are accurate and everything is well explained.\n\n* Work with data reporters to develop project ideas and pitches. \n\n* Help prioritize dozens of projects and stories so the team can be deployed strategically across the organization.\n\n* Train staff members and partners on how to best use data analysis to elevate their stories.\n\n* Implement effective workflows that ensure that projects are completed on schedule.\n\n* Execute a vision to keep pushing ProPublicaโ€™s data journalism forward and help us set the standard for the industry.\n\n\n\n\nOur ideal candidate will have:\n\n\n* At least five years of experience leading or producing data-driven investigations and projects at a high level. Though experience editing and supervising staff are not required, they are a plus.\n\n* Experience with investigative or accountability journalism.\n\n* A mindset that enables them to identify which datasets are relevant and what questions to ask of them.\n\n* Experience building an esprit de corps in a team, one that is grounded in motivating staff, helping them reach career goals and working together.\n\n* A strong belief that transparency and open sourcing are important parts of responsible data science. \n\n* Strong knowledge of data analysis tools, including proficiency in using R or Python.\n\n* Training in statistics and experience applying complex statistical concepts in a newsroom are pluses. This means choosing models that are suitable to answering statistical questions as well as being able to explain them to readers.\n\n* Ability to travel occasionally for staff retreats and other required events.\n\n\n\n\nWe also know there are great candidates who can bring skills to ProPublica that we havenโ€™t thought of, and who wonโ€™t fit everything weโ€™ve described above. If this is you, donโ€™t hesitate to apply and tell us what unique contributions you can offer.\n\nThis job is full time and includes benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, but the data team is distributed and weโ€™re open to remote candidates for this role. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.\n\nThe expected salary range for this position is $140,000 to $150,000\n\nThis is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. Remote Executive Producer Audio

\nWe will stop accepting applications for this role on January 14th @ 5PM ET.\n\nThe countryโ€™s largest investigative news organization is seeking an executive producer to oversee the creation of a new podcast series and to serve as the primary liaison on audio partnerships with other media organizations. We see the role of this new leader as critical to helping expand the reach and impact of our journalism. Weโ€™re looking for a veteran journalist with experience in accountability reporting and a track record of turning stories about complicated issues and secretive sources into compelling programs. Strong management and communication skills are essential.\n\nAlthough ProPublica has already co-produced several successful podcasts โ€” including  โ€œWe Donโ€™t Talk About Leonardโ€ and  โ€œTrump, Inc.โ€ โ€” the creation of our own seasonal program represents a new venture for us. We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, working relationships with a broad array of leaders in the industry, and a keen understanding of the logistical and financial challenges of breaking into the saturated podcasting landscape. \n\nIn this job, you would select and manage the hosts for the new podcast series and help them bring ProPublicaโ€™s work to life in audio. You would work with sprawling teams of staff reporters and editors, along with freelance field producers and sound engineers, to identify stories that will be featured each season. You would oversee all aspects of structuring, directing and producing the episodes, as well as podcasts that we decide to co-produce with other media companies.\n\nThis role will report to a managing editor. \n\nKey aspects of the job include:\n\n\n* Organizing auditions to select hosts for the seasonal program.\n\n* Identifying stories in the ProPublica newsroom that will be featured on the program, as well as originating ideas that have the potential to develop into separate audio projects.\n\n* Helping to establish a compelling audio style and narrative voice for ProPublica.\n\n* Advising the reporting and providing feedback and guidance on scripts and drafts.\n\n* Ensuring strong journalistic ethics and fact-checking processes throughout production.\n\n* Collaborating with business team members to acquire production and post-production financing.\n\n* Developing new relationships with production partners and securing distribution.\n\n* Working with partners and communications team members to coordinate publicity around audio releases.\n\n\n\n\nWeโ€™re looking for someone who: \n\n\n* Is a talented and multifaceted producer and narrative storyteller with seven or more years of experience. \n\n* Has an established creative sensibility and a track record of developing and producing great audio storytelling in a newsroom, production company, studio or elsewhere.\n\n* Has creative, innovative audio sensibilities as well as high editorial standards and unassailable journalism ethics.\n\n* Has strategic expertise to help build a pipeline of audio projects that balance high journalistic rigor, quality and ethical standards with innovative and artistic storytelling. \n\n* Forges strong relationships and partnerships across departments, disciplines and industries. \n\n* Has experience collaborating successfully with print and audio journalists and producers.\n\n* Has experience packaging projects, creating successful pitching materials and seeking financial support.\n\n* Is interested in pushing the boundaries on what investigative journalism can look like in audio and how it can reach mainstream audiences.  \n\n* Can oversee several projects simultaneously.\n\n* Is available for occasional travel to meet with reporters and newsrooms, or to other required events.\n\n* Has trauma literacy and experience working with complex and sensitive topics.         \n\n\n\n\nThis job is full time and includes benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, but weโ€™re open to remote candidates. We have offices in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Chicago; Austin, Texas; Phoenix; and Berkeley, California. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.\n\nThe expected salary range for this position is $150,000 to $175,000.\n\nThis is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. ProPublica is hiring a

Remote Reporter Climate

\nClimate change has reached an inflection point. The physical changes, the sociopolitical implications and the consequences of governmentsโ€™ failures to respond are now clear enough to benefit from sustained accountability reporting. The effects of rapid and world-altering change are no longer in the future but are measurable right now, from the staggering increase in extreme weather events that can cause mass fatalities to the rising sea levels that are submerging coastlines. Warming is changing the costs of insurance, housing and utilities, and itโ€™s stressing infrastructure, undermining human health and disproportionately endangering already-vulnerable communities. It is affecting agriculture and food supplies, immigration and national security, global trade and employment. \n\nProPublica is seeking an accountability reporter to cover climate change as an investigative beat, examining how decisions by individuals, corporations and governments are shaping life-and-death outcomes for people across the U.S. and the world. The ideal candidate will be versed in climate science, and will be a systems thinker with experience writing about complex subject matter, familiarity with business and economics, and a knack for gripping storytelling. The reporter will work independently and with colleagues across ProPublica to craft investigations that surprise, probe deeply, test underlying assumptions, and trace the real-world effects of climate change back to their causes and to those who are responsible for them. \n\nWeโ€™re looking for a reporter who:\n\n\n* Has at least five years of experience and a track record of aggressive reporting and landing revelatory accountability stories. \n\n* Is a fountain of original ideas for how to cover climate change at ProPublica.\n\n* Has expertise in climate science and issues, or a proven record in other relevant subject areas that will contribute to building new climate beat expertise in a novel way. \n\n* Thinks broadly and sees the systemic implications of change or policy across sectors and populations.\n\n* Is experienced with financial and business reporting, including corporate accountability, and is adept at translating technical and complex subject matter into straightforward and accessible prose.\n\n* Is a skilled investigative storyteller, capable of delivering findings in ways that connect with readers, and aches to report stories that are both important and powerfully told through all the ways to do journalism: including deep data digging, working with readers, and marrying narrative and investigative forms.\n\n* Has the ability to travel for reporting assignments or team meetings as necessary.\n\n* Really likes working with others. We are a highly collaborative newsroom, both across our teams and with other news organizations regionally and nationally. We believe we do our best work together.\n\n\n\n\nThis job is full time and includes benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, but weโ€™re open to remote candidates. We have offices in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Chicago; Austin, Texas; Phoenix; and Berkeley, California. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.\n\nThe expected salary range for this position is $95,000 to $170,000.\n\nThis is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. ProPublica is hiring a

Remote South Reporter

\nWe will stop accepting applications for this role on Tuesday, August 13 at 9AM ET. \n\nWeโ€™re looking for an ambitious reporter to take on compelling stories grounded in the South but with national resonance, designed to surprise, reveal, inform and bring about change.\n\nThe South has been the focus of some of ProPublicaโ€™s most ambitious coverage. Our investigations have drawn attention to environmental injustice in Alabama, voter registration challenges in Georgia, attacks on gender-affirming care in South Carolina and the underrepresentation of women in legislatures across the Southeast. Our Local Reporting Network partners have also produced work that has had impact in the region.\n\nYouโ€™ll join our team of reporters covering the South with a focus on Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee.\n\nWeโ€™re looking for a reporter who:\n\n\n* Has produced original, investigative stories in the South. You donโ€™t have to be an โ€œinvestigative reporter,โ€ but your work should show a dedication to digging for the truth.\n\n* Aches to report stories that are both important and powerfully told, and has a vision for how theyโ€™d cover the South.\n\n* Has experience with or ideas about all the possible ways we can do journalism now: from deep data digging to working with readers to marrying narrative and investigative forms.\n\n* Wants to bring an accountability lens to the issues of the day through quick investigations reported over a couple of weeks and longer projects that you dig into for a few months (or more).\n\n* Really likes working with others. We are a highly collaborative newsroom, both across our team and with other news organizations regionally and nationally. We believe we do our best work together.\n\n\n\n\nThis job is full time and includes benefits. This position is based in Atlanta, but weโ€™re open to remote candidates in the region (Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee). Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.\n\nThe expected salary range for this position is $90,000 to $130,000.\n\nThis is our best estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. The final salary figure will take into account a personโ€™s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered career salary limits or caps.\n\nIf all of this sounds exciting to you, you can apply using this form.\n\nQuestions? Send an email to [email protected].\n\nNo phone calls, please.

ProPublica is hiring a

Remote Data Editor

\nWe're looking for a data editor who can set and execute an ambitious vision for the use of data analysis in the ProPublica newsroom. The editor will do this by guiding data journalists as they co-report our groundbreaking investigations; proactively identifying promising uses of data, including developing pitches and data-driven projects; and guarding against errors. We take on ambitious data projects, from analyzing past Ebola outbreaks linked to deforestation to predict future ones to showing how wealthy executives make millions on exquisitely timed trades and crunching data from millions of child protective services cases to understand who is most affected by the system. We want you to help us continue to innovate and elevate our use of data to do compelling, impactful journalism. \n\nAs data editor you will:\n\n\n* Lead a distributed team of eight data journalists and a deputy working across the newsroom on high-impact investigations.\n\n* Proactively work to infuse a data mindset across the team and the broader staff by finding angles for data analysis and insights related to major issues of the day.\n\n* Help edit our most complex data stories and play a leading role in editing our data methodologies, ensuring that the language as well as the statistical work is accurate and well explained.\n\n* Maintain standards and best practices for storing, sharing and securing datasets.\n\n* Prioritize among dozens of projects and stories and think strategically about how to deploy the team across the organization.\n\n* Work with data reporters to develop project ideas and pitches while balancing the needs of the broader newsroom. \n\n* Consider and, when appropriate, find ways of integrating AI into our data workflows.\n\n* Train staff members and partners on how to best use data analysis to elevate their stories.\n\n* Create effective workflows that ensure that projects are completed on schedule.\n\n* Execute a vision to keep pushing ProPublicaโ€™s data journalism forward and help us set the standard for the industry.\n\n\n\n\nOur ideal candidate will have:\n\n\n* At least five years of leadership experience in coming up with data-driven investigations and projects, as well as overseeing and editing them.\n\n* Experience leading accountability journalism projects and can point to ways in which their analysis/editing elevated the work or prevented errors.\n\n* A data mindset that enables them to identify which datasets are relevant and the questions to ask of them.\n\n* Experience building an esprit de corps in a team, one that is grounded in motivating staff, helping them reach career goals and working together.\n\n* A strong belief that transparency and open sourcing are important parts of responsible data science. \n\n* Strong knowledge of data analysis tools, including proficiency in using R or Python.\n\n* Training in statistics and experience applying complex statistical concepts in a newsroom are pluses. This means choosing models that are suitable to answering statistical questions as well as being able to explain them to readers.\n\n* Ability for occasional travel as required for staff retreats and other required events.\n\n\n\n\nWe also know that great candidates can bring skills to ProPublica that we havenโ€™t thought of, and who wonโ€™t fit everything weโ€™ve described above. If this is you, donโ€™t hesitate to apply, and tell us what unique contributions you can offer.\n\nThis job is full time and includes benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, but the data team is distributed and weโ€™re open to remote candidates for this role. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.\n\nThe expected salary range for this position is $150,000 to $175,000.\n\nThis is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay for this position. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Travel and Non Tech jobs that are similar:\n\n $95,000 — $135,000/year\n

ProPublica is hiring a

Remote Immigration Reporter

\nWe are seeking an experienced journalist with a track record of and passion for producing powerful immigration investigative projects. Weโ€™re looking for someone brimming with ideas for stories that expose the myriad harms caused by the countryโ€™s dysfunctional immigration system and the distorted political debate that stands in the way of meaningful reform. Our previous coverage has examined the political machine funneling billions to the southern border, investigated the dangerous working conditions immigrants encounter across the country, and exposed the real world impacts of failed federal policies and the children caught within them. \n\nApplicants should have a demonstrated ability to execute rolling investigations and narrative deep dives. They will have an impressive array of sources who they can turn to for help penetrating agencies and making sense of laws and policies. They will have successfully navigated the challenges of gaining the trust of undocumented immigrants and will have shown that they use best practices for trauma reporting.  \n\nWeโ€™re looking for a journalist who has worked closely with data, engagement and visual reporting teams; one who deeply understands and embraces ProPublicaโ€™s accountability mission; someone whose deep knowledge of the beat and sound news judgment will help guide and elevate immigration reporting across our growing newsroom. ProPublica is hiring a

Remote Audience Editor Social Media

\nProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust โ€” and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account.\n\nWe are seeking an audience editor who will lead the daily management and programming of our social platforms. Your work will focus on distributing new stories and reader callouts, recirculating evergreen stories and promoting ProPublica events, membership drives and more. As needed, the role will also work closely with senior editors and reporters on the written and visual presentation of stories, helping to write headlines, push-notification language and related social copy. Because this role requires working on Saturdays, we want this candidate to be mindful of how we program our social channels differently during the weekend.\n\nThis position is part of ProPublicaโ€™s audience team and will report to the deputy audience editor. \n\nEssential responsibilities\n\n\n* Schedule and program ProPublicaโ€™s social media channels, including Twitter/X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Mastodon, Blue Sky and other platforms while assessing new ways to help us elevate our presence on social media.\n\n* Deploy test-and-learn tactics to determine the best messages and social copy for promoting stories on various platforms.\n\n* Interpret data and analytics to measure the impact of your work.\n\n* Send push notifications to our audiences on desktop, native iOS and Android apps, and Apple News.\n\n* Spot opportunities to respond to and build off existing work, repromoting stories and reposting social media posts from our journalists.\n\n* Write and edit concise, compelling headlines and decks for stories, explainers, impact follow-ups and more.\n\n* Participate in story and planning meetings as needed to best build out stories for social platforms.\n\n* Draft social copy for your assigned stories, which can include single posts, X (formerly Twitter) threads, Instagram captions and more.\n\n* Serve as the point person for your assigned stories, helping to inform the audience team of findings, potential promotional opportunities, and on-site and off-platform performance metrics.\n\n* Attend daily, 15-minute editorial and audience standups and weekly team meetings.\n\n\n\n\nAbout you\n\nWe are looking for someone who has social media production, audience engagement and editing experience. The ideal candidate will have many of these attributes:\n\n\n* At least four years and up to six years of experience creating social content and running social platforms.\n\n* Experience managing social channels for a newsroom is a must. A background in breaking news or at a national publication is a plus.\n\n* Demonstrated success managing social media across multiple platforms simultaneously.\n\n* Strong headline writing and copy editing skills, as well as a familiarity with AP style.\n\n* Strong news judgment and a deep understanding of how stories can resonate with our audiences.\n\n* Deep understanding of platform-specific content best practices and a willingness to adapt to new platforms and strategies.\n\n* Experience with social media scheduling and analytics tools, like SocialFlow, True Anthem, Buffer and Later.\n\n* Familiarity with content analytics tools, like Google Analytics, Parse.ly and Chartbeat.\n\n* A history of leveraging social media platforms to maximize the impact and reach of a news story, all with the goal of making the journalism as accessible as it can be for as many people as possible.\n\n* An understanding of how to visually present our stories on social platforms.\n\n* A data-driven mindset with the ability to effectively interpret social data and report on it.\n\n* A collaborative mindset, stellar communication skills and the ability to work on several stories at once. Youโ€™ll need to stay organized and focused, and to meet deadlines.\n\n* Experience working on enterprise and investigative journalism a plus.\n\n* Available to work a Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule.\n\n\n\n\nThis role is open to remote candidates. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. The expected salary for this position is $80,000 to $100,000.\n\nThis is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay. The final wage will take into account a personโ€™s experience, accomplishment and location. ProPublica is committed to paying its staff equitably, and these ranges should not be considered wage limits or caps.\n\nWe will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.\n\nQuestions? Send an email to [email protected].\n\nNo phone calls, please. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Senior and Android jobs that are similar:\n\n $45,000 — $87,500/year\n
