Remote Temporary Newsletter Writer\nProPublica is looking for an experienced reporter to write newsletters on a temporary basis from mid-November through early May. The person in this role will write for our Big Story and Dispatches newsletters, taking readers inside our process, going deep on findings and exploring the larger themes of our work. The newsletter writer will work closely with reporters and editors across the newsroom on both short-format sections and written-through standalone pieces that bring dimension and life to our journalism. \n\nThis position is filling in for a staffer on parental leave. It will report to the newsletter editor and join an award-winning 12-person audience team that works on creating and sharing multiplatform accountability journalism. \n\nWhat You’ll Do Here \n\n\n* Identify opportunities for presenting investigative projects in email form. This will include writing templated sections like intros and deep dives as well as experimenting with new forms. \n\n* Collaborate with the audience and product teams on building longitudinal relationships with readers. \n\n* Work with members of the newsroom to create Dispatches, a weekly newsletter that highlights our journalism. \n\n* Produce newsletters using our email service provider, Sailthru. \n\n\n\n\nWe’re Looking for Someone With:\n\n\n* 3-5 years experience writing and producing newsletters. You should be able to write clear, compelling copy on deadline and know your way around an ESP (we use Sailthru). \n\n* Reporting skills. You should be comfortable conducting interviews with both members of our newsroom and other sources, verifying information and picking up the phone when necessary. Familiarity with newsrooms and investigative work is a plus. \n\n* A dedication to finding and engaging with new audiences. You should bring creative approaches for connecting with the communities we cover. \n\n* Enthusiasm for experimenting with new forms combined with a practice of measuring success. \n\n* The ability to work on several projects at once. You’ll need to stay organized and focused.\n\n* The self-discipline to work independently, as well as an eagerness to work with teammates on collaborative projects.\n\n\n\n\nWhat We’re Looking for in Applicants\n\nWe want to see your work and learn how you think about it. The application form will allow you to send us two projects from your portfolio; these can be individual emails, a newsletter series or similar work that demonstrates your ability to capture a reader’s attention and clearly present information. \n\nThe application also includes the space to walk us through your contributions to those projects. How did you evaluate it when it was finished? \n\nThis job is a temporary full-time position and includes benefits. Remote Research Reporter\nApplications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. This posting will be open until at least Oct. 1, 2024. \n\nProPublica is looking for an experienced research reporter to help us uncover documents, data and sources for hard-hitting investigative projects. You’ll team up with reporters and editors to do the kind of deep digging required to put out rigorous, powerful investigations.\n\nResearch reporters work as part of a highly collaborative team that partners with ProPublica reporters and editors and with the engagement, news applications, data, visuals and audience teams, as well as with other publishing partners, to cover a range of topics, and may also work with external partners on long- and short-term projects through the Local Reporting Network. \n\nWhat you would be doing:\n\n\n* Collaborating with sustainability desk colleagues and local partner newsrooms to execute stories that have great local significance and strong national resonance.\n\n* Appraising story viability from a research perspective, communicating potential research paths or pitfalls, and helping to assess the national context for select local stories. \n\n* Conducting broad news searches and academic or archival research.\n\n* Conducting background research on people, companies, organizations or topics.\n\n* Creating original datasets from publicly available data.\n\n* Assisting reporters with best practices for using research tools and methods.\n\n\n\n\nWe’re looking for someone who has:\n\n\n* At least three years’ experience working as part of a collaborative group in a researcher or investigative reporter role.\n\n* Excellent news sense, keen attention to detail and the ability to connect the dots in investigations.\n\n* Experience with juggling multiple projects and many responsibilities at once\n\n* Experience and comfort working collaboratively with distributed colleagues across the country. \n\n* Ability to prioritize in a dynamic, multiproject team environment. You should be able to meet deadlines and handle pressure while remaining calm. \n\n* Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.\n\n* Demonstrated ability to search legal resources such as PACER, CourtLink, Westlaw and local court systems.\n\n* Demonstrated ability to use aggregated public records such as Nexis, TLO, Accurint, Ancestry or Pipl, and news sources such as Bloomberg, Factiva or NewsBank.\n\n* Facility searching social media.\n\n* Ability to review large document sets and extract relevant information with accuracy.\n\n* Excellent communication skills and ability to synthesize information for others is a must.\n\n* Expertise in identifying, obtaining, searching and deciphering public records. Ability to file targeted, fruitful FOIA requests is a must.\n\n* Strong understanding of government documents, agencies and processes at the federal and local levels.\n\n* Available for occasional travel for staff retreats, reporting assignments or other required events.\n\n\n\n\nThis job is full time and includes benefits. Remote Data Editor\nWe're looking for a data editor who can set and execute an ambitious vision for the use of data analysis in the ProPublica newsroom. The editor will do this by guiding data journalists as they co-report our groundbreaking investigations; proactively identifying promising uses of data, including developing pitches and data-driven projects; and guarding against errors. Remote Immigration Reporter\nWe are seeking an experienced journalist with a track record of and passion for producing powerful immigration investigative projects. We’re looking for someone brimming with ideas for stories that expose the myriad harms caused by the country’s dysfunctional immigration system and the distorted political debate that stands in the way of meaningful reform. Our previous coverage has examined the political machine funneling billions to the southern border, investigated the dangerous working conditions immigrants encounter across the country, and exposed the real world impacts of failed federal policies and the children caught within them. \n\nApplicants should have a demonstrated ability to execute rolling investigations and narrative deep dives. They will have an impressive array of sources who they can turn to for help penetrating agencies and making sense of laws and policies. Remote Audience Editor Social Media\nProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account.\n\nWe are seeking an audience editor who will lead the daily management and programming of our social platforms. Your work will focus on distributing new stories and reader callouts, recirculating evergreen stories and promoting ProPublica events, membership drives and more. As needed, the role will also work closely with senior editors and reporters on the written and visual presentation of stories, helping to write headlines, push-notification language and related social copy.
