An increasing number of highly scalable climate solutions rely on biomass feedstocks, from sustainable aviation fuel to biochar. These solutions must rely on sustainable biomass from forests and agriculture to be effective. The Sustainable Biomass Scientist will play a crucial role in evaluating and advising on the use of biomass as a renewable feedstock for carbon removal and other climate solutions. This role requires a deep understanding of biomass feedstocks, supply chains, environmental and social impacts, and regulatory frameworks to ensure that biomass utilization aligns with Carbon Direct's commitment to sustainable decarbonization and carbon removal. This role will work closely with engineering colleagues to understand biomass-based climate solutions holistically.\n\nResponsibilities \n\n\n* Biomass Evaluation: Assess the sustainability and carbon intensity of biomass feedstocks, considering factors such as life cycle emissions, land use, biodiversity impacts, and social implications.\n\n* Supply Chain Analysis: Conduct comprehensive analyses of biomass supply chains to identify opportunities for optimization, risk reduction, efficiency improvements, and emissions reductions.\n\n* Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date on relevant regulations and standards governing biomass utilization, ensuring that Carbon Direct's practices adhere to environmental laws and guidelines.\n\n* Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with external stakeholders, including biomass suppliers, industry associations, research institutions, and policymakers, to promote sustainable biomass practices and advance Carbon Direct's mission.\n\n* Scientific Expertise: Provide technical expertise and guidance to interdisciplinary Carbon Direct teams on biomass supply chains, forest management, and sustainability assessments.\n\n* Research and Innovation: Stay abreast of the latest developments and innovations in sustainable biomass utilization approaches, conducting research and analysis to inform Carbon Direct's strategies and initiatives.\n\n* Client Engagement: Engage with Carbon Direct's clients to understand their sustainability goals and carbon reduction needs, offering tailored solutions and recommendations for incorporating biomass-based solutions into their decarbonization strategies.\n\n\n\n\nQualifications \n\n\n* Experience in biomass sustainability, forest management, carbon removal, or a related field.\n\n* Bachelor's degree in environmental science, forestry, agriculture, or related field (advanced degree preferred).\n\n* Strong understanding of biomass feedstocks and supply chains, with a focus on environmental sustainability and carbon impacts.\n\n* Familiarity with regulatory frameworks and standards governing biomass utilization, such as sustainability certifications and carbon accounting protocols.\n\n* Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to conduct rigorous assessments and evaluations of complex systems, such as through life cycle assessment.\n\n* Effective communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences and build collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders across disciplines.\n\n* Commitment to Carbon Direct's mission of combating climate change through innovative and sustainable solutions.\n\n\n\n\nSalary\n\n$130,000-$159,000\nBenefits\nWhile we love our work, our lives arenโt defined by it.
