Remote Senior Editor ESU
\nJoin the Enterprise Storytelling Unit, which produces long-form content and includes Embedded, NPRโs award-winning showcase channel of long-form multi-part series.\n\nNPR is looking for an experienced editor for a temporary 6-month position. The Senior Editor is a key editorial position, helping to build NPRs capacity for telling thoughtful, deeply reported stories. This role is part of a small, highly collaborative team that will often work cross-functionally with NPR reporters, NPRโs Investigations unit, freelancers, member stations, and other external storytellers. As Senior Editor, you will help review pitches and assign and execute stories for the Embedded podcast. You care about story structure, finding compelling characters, and sticking a landing. You write and support writing with flair and accuracy. You have a deep understanding of and love for narrative journalism. In addition, we are looking for an editor who has an inclusive approach to their work and is committed to finding and featuring voices that reflect the full range of human experience.\n\nThis position has the flexibility to be remote. \n\nThis is a union-represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.\n\nApplication Deadline: Please submit your application by 8:00 pm EST, Monday, January 8th, 2024. \n\nRESPONSIBILITIES\n\nPerforms the duties of Senior Editor, editing podcasts and planning future stories.\n\n\n* Edits podcast episodes and other content, as needed\n\n* Writes and produces content to support the show, as needed\n\n* Active leader in pitch meetings, pitching specific stories as well as themes/broader areas of coverage and evaluating pitches for piloting, development, or inclusion in Embeddedโs podcast feed\n\n* Assists host/reporters with prep for interviews and reporting assignments\n\n* Assists host/reporters in organizing and focusing their stories throughout reporting, writing, editing, and fact-checking processes\n\n* Assists with future planning, development of host/producer/outside projects, and strategic partnerships\n\n\n\n\nMakes assignments and provides editorial guidance to staff.\n\n\n* Reviews pitches from team and outside contributors to determine assignments.\n\n* Monitors show for overall balance, variety of stories, and types of pieces.\n\n* Regularly provides constructive critiques of stories in personal meetings with staff and contributors.\n\n\n\n\nIs responsible for editorial integrity and quality of published products.\n\n\n* Edits stories for continuity, integrity of journalism, quality of writing, manner of presentation, and consistency of style.\n\n* Ensures that all materials aired meet NPR program standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity, and balance.\n\n\n\n\nThe above duties and responsibilities are not an exhaustive list of required responsibilities, duties, and skills. Other duties may be assigned, and this job description can be modified at any time.\n\nPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS\n\n\n* Broadcast experience is strongly preferred.\n\n* Demonstrated writing ability.\n\n* Knowledge of basic and advanced principles of audio production for information and news programming.\n\n* Experience with the type of audio production done at NPR.\n\n* Experience in online journalism.\n\n* Original reporting experience. \n\n* Experience leading highly creative teams.\n\n* Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system. \n\n\n\n\nREQUIRED SKILLS\n\n\n* At least eight years of journalism experience.\n\n* Thorough knowledge of and passion for long-form narrative storytelling in the audio space.\n\n* Considerable skill in both news and feature editing.\n\n* Ability to work collaboratively with a highly creative team.\n\n* Ability to synthesize large amounts of information into actionable tasks and delegate effectively.\n\n* Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance, and fairness.\n\n* Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.\n\n* Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.\n\n\n\n\nEDUCATION REQUIREMENT\n\nBachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience is required.\n\nWORK LOCATION\n\nThis is a remote permitted role. This role is based out of our Washington, DC office but the employee may choose to work on a remote basis from a location that NPR approves.\n\nJOB TYPE\n\nThis is a temporary (6-month) full-time position.\n\nCOMPENSATION\n\nHourly Rate: The U.S.-based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $58.89 per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.\n\nBenefits: NPR offers access to comprehensive benefits for employees and dependents. Regular, full-time employees scheduled to work 30 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in NPRโs benefits options.
