We believe in working with a high degree of autonomy while supporting the organization's priorities.\n\n \n\nThe role\n\nDevOps is a buzzword, but it's also generic enough to encompass the breadth of tasks required in supporting development teams. There are many ways to make the lives of developers easier, and everyone has their own best way, which also means every team has their own way. There is no perfect way to make everyone happy with the same thing.\n\nSupporting developers involves debugging obscure bash scripts from years ago that nobody remembers. It means biting on a piece of wood and using data formats turned programming languages like YAML to configure CI jobs. It means tracking down minute differences between releases of packages and libraries causing unexpected crashes. It means rewriting the same Dockerfile for the 5th time to allow a project to use one more obscure library. Or tracking down absurd race conditions of multi-threaded tests running in parallel on the same host. Or pulling your hair out at a bug only to realize it works fine after the CI worker host is restarted.\n\nBut fundamentally it means wrestling it all into submission and making it run smoothly... at least for as long as you're there.\n\nIf you have the guts to fight against entropy and deterioration of the reality we inhabit, then you just might also be crazy enough to enjoy the struggle while it lasts, and appreciate the eventual fruits of our labour, if you value privacy, freedom, and transparency. You might even make some money, and learn a bit from all the exceptional engineers working here.\n\n \n\nWho you are\n\nYou have strong Linux Fundamentals:\n\n\n* Distros and package managers\n\n* Good understanding of process management\n\n\n\n\nYou have programming experience:\n\n\n* At least a few languages and showing the ability to learn\n\n* Bash as a minimum; Python, Groovy would be nice\n\n\n\n\nYou have experience in Continuous Integration:\n\n\n* Jenkins CI - Pipelines are written in Groovy\n\n* GitHub Actions - PR builds, mostly\n\n\n\n\nYou have experience in Security:\n\n\n* Good understanding of OpenSSH\n\n* GnuPG for encryption of secrets and backups\n\n\n\n\n \n\nBonus points if\n\nExperience in Continuous Integration: \n\n\n* Jenkins \n\n* GitHub Actions\n\n* Nix / NixOS\n\n\n\n\nExperience building the following processes:\n\n\n* Gradle, Maven, Yarn, FDroid - for Android\n\n* XCode, Fastlane, Gems, clj - for iOS\n\n* AppImage, Qt, DeployQt - for Linux\n\n* VS Build Tools, MinGw, Scoop - for Windows\n\n* Brew, CMake, XCode CodeSign - for MacOS\n\n\n\n\nExperience in the following programming languages:\n\n\n* Groovy scripting\n\n* Go programming\n\n\n\n\nExperience in Infra automation:\n\n\n* Ansible and Terraform\n\n* Kubernetes\n\n\n\n\nWindows fundamentals:\n\n\n* Windows Server Core administration using PowerShell\n\n\n\n\nDecentralized Software:\n\n\n* Fundamental to messaging and other functions of the App\n\n* Ethereum, Status-go, Nimbus, IPFS, Swarm\n\n\n\n\n \n\nCompensation\n\nWe are happy to pay in either 100% fiat or any mix of fiat and/or crypto. Our team is currently 100+ core contributors strong, and welcomes a growing number of community members from all walks of life, scattered all around the globe. \n\nWe care deeply about open source, and our organizational structure has minimal hierarchy and no fixed work hours. We believe in working with a high degree of autonomy while supporting the organization's priorities. \n\n\nWaku\n\nWe are building Waku as a public good infrastructure. Waku is the messaging layer of Web3.\n\nIt is a decentralized, censorship-resistant, privacy-preserving communication network that enables anyone to send and receive messages without worrying about surveillance or deplatforming.\n\nWe are developing 3 open source implementations of Waku:\n\n\n\nNwaku. https://github.com/status-im/nwaku: the reference implementation and service node,\n\n\n\nJs-waku, https://github.com/waku-org/js-waku: for the browser\n\n\n\nGo-waku: https://github.com/waku-org/go-waku: to integrate as a library in native applications\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are enabling Ethereum builders to create new projects with a fully decentralized architecture, think dApp to Wallet notifications, NFT marketplaces, censorship-resistant chat, layer-2 decentralization and more.\n\nFrom early on, we have released Waku libraries and pushed for developer adoption with a basic set of documentation and materials. Now, that the Waku is maturing, we are looking for a tech writer to improve the quality of existing documentation, consolidate the various library documentation in a centralized and well organized website and finally, write more guides and tutorials to ensure that any developer wishing to use Waku can do so with ease.\n\nKey responsibilities:\n\n\nWrite comprehensive, clear, and well-structured documentation; this includes API (JavaScript, Golang libraries) and infrastructure (run a node) documentation.\n\nReview and update technical documentation articles. Collaborate with SMEs to consolidate/disperse documentation and guides into a single and unified structure.\n\nImprove and document the planning, writing, reviewing, and publishing workflows in the documentation process.\n\nContributing to the writing style guide and applying the writing rules consistently.\n\nBring new and innovative approaches to improve and simplify the Waku documentation process.\n\n\n\n\nYou ideally will have:\n\n\nExperience in, and passion for, blockchain technology.\n\n\nA strong alignment to our principles: https://status.im/about/#our-principles\n\n\nStrong command of the English language\n\nAt least 3 years of proven experience writing technical documentation for software products, including API & infrastructure documentation. Writing samples will be requested.\n\nProficient use of Markdown, command-line git, and GitHub.\n\nAbility to depict complex processes in easy-to-read workflows and diagrams.\n\nPassion for quality and content design. Ability to go beyond writing content by understanding how to structure this content to improve user experience.\n\nHappy to iterate and collaborate: draft, ask, test, fail, and improve.\n\n\n\n\nBonus points:\n\n\nComfortable working remotely and asynchronously\n\nExperience working for an open source organization. \n\nA strong interest in blockchain technology and Ethereum.\n\nStrong interest in information design and information architecture.\n\nKnowledge of TypeDoc, JavaScript, Go, shell and Nim.\n\nExperience working with and implementing static site generators (Docusaurus, Material for MkDocs, etc.)\n\nExperience using design tools to create workflows and diagrams.\n\n\n\n\n[Donโ€™t worry if you donโ€™t meet all of these criteria, weโ€™d still love to hear from you anyway if you think youโ€™d be a great fit for this role. Just explain to us why in your cover letter].\n\n\nCompensation\n\nWe are happy to pay in either 100% fiat or any mix of fiat and/or crypto. For more information regarding benefits at Status: https://people-ops.status.im/tag/perks/\n\nHiring process\n\nThe hiring process for this role will be:\n\nInterview with our Talent team.\n\nInterview with Campo, Docs Team & Franck, Waku Team Lead.\n\nCompensated Technical Assessment, to showcase your working style and writing.\n\nInterview with Corey, Logos Program Lead.\n\n\n\nThe steps may change along the way if we see it makes sense to adapt the interview stages, so please consider the above as a guideline.
