Our strategies include creating strong regulatory frameworks to achieve 100% zero-emission ocean shipping on a timeline commensurate with the climate emergency, pressuring corporate customers to demand zero-emission ships, and influencing ports in the United States and internationally across the Pacific Rim to end fossil fuel build out and ready themselves for 100% zero-emission ocean shipping instead.\n\n\nPosition \nThe Climate Campaign Director, Ports will oversee Pacific Environment’s ports-related campaigning, includingleading our cross-functional Ports for People campaign and otherwise working to transform ports to 100% zero-emission shipping. They will develop and lead strategies focusing on major ports, including within North America and Asia, to accelerate the implementation of zero-emission shipping corridors, to stop ports’ fossil fuel build-out and instead transition to zero-emission alternatives, and to ensure port communities and workers are centered in discussions on decarbonization. Importantly, they will manage PE’s team of place-based and strategy-specific campaigners and technical experts. Together, this team builds and cultivate relationships with community partners, labor partners, environmental justice partners, industry stakeholders and more to achieve campaign goals. \n \nThe ideal candidate is a values-based leader and campaign strategist with experience managing international, local-to-global campaigns and a large and geographically dispersed team. They have a record of accomplishment of successful grassroots organizing and local, state, multi-state, and/or international advocacy, especially on environmental, justice, energy, infrastructure, and/or transportation issues.\n \nThe Climate Campaign Director for Ports will report to Pacific Environment’s Senior Climate Campaign Director. They will manage a campaign team working to end fossil fuel pollution from ships, accelerate production of 100% green maritime fuels and propulsion solutions, and advance environmental justice in frontline and fence-line communities. \n \nLocation and Travel \nThis position is remote and requires working West Coast time zone hours, with a preference for physical presences in greater Los Angeles are or greater San Francisco Bay area. The position will involve domestic, and possibly international, travel. Pacific Environment is sensitive to COVID-19 and other potential obstacles to safe travel.\n\n\nPhysical Requirements \nThe Climate Campaign Director, Ports work involves remaining in a stationary position and looking at a computer for long stretches of time, communicating with co-workers electronically, and frequent travel (including overnight travel), in-person meetings, or events. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation. \n\n\nPacific Environment has an organization-wide policy that staff must be vaccinated against COVID-19. \n\n\n\nResponsibilities\n* In collaboration with the Climate Policy Team, our Asia-based Teams, and other cross-functional partners, develop and lead port-focused campaign strategies within the U.S., Pacific Rim, and globally to achieve zero-emission shipping and ports.\n* Manage, inspire, and empower a team of place-based and strategy-specific campaigners, and technical experts.\n* Cultivate partnerships and coordinate closely with partner organizations in various coalitions – including community labor and environmental justice groups, academic partners, and more – to broaden constituencies of support.\n* Directly advocate climate policy positions to port officials, state and local policymakers, corporations, allies, and partners to advance shipping-specific policy changes.\n* Produce policy analyses, memos, and advocacy products as needed - both in-house and through the management of consultant and research budgets     \n* Represent Pacific Environment with ports, policymakers, the press, in coalitions with key allies, and in key policy forums. \n* Other tasks as determined by the Senior Climate Campaign Director. \n\n\n\nKey Qualifications\n* More than 7 years of relevant experience in successful policy advocacy, community and grassroots organizing, and campaigning; including international experience. \n* Experience and expertise in climate/energy issues and policies, including in shipping, ports, and/or other heavy industry sectors. \n* Experience and expertise in environmental, racial, and economic justice; including excellent advocacy, listening, consensus-building, coalition-building, and leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with other staff, organizations, and diverse communities.\n* A record of accomplishment of achievement in managing and winning regional or international campaigns. \n* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Experience as a public spokesperson and advocate; ability to analyze and articulate complex issues and to communicate them to a variety of audiences.\n* Exceptional management skills, of both projects and team.  \n* Skill and comfort in building relationships with diverse audiences, including with policy makers, coalition partners, community leaders, and members of the media. \n* Experience in energy or pollution analysis a plus. \n* Commitment to helping frontline communities have a strong voice in decision-making. \n\n\n\n\n$108,000 - $120,000 a yearPacific Environment provides compensation commensurate with experience and equitable with others on our team, plus a full benefits package for staff positions. The salary range is carefully considered to account for equity, and the final offer will be based on candidate’s qualifications.
