We are currently in a very exciting growth phase. Together with the rest of the team, you will bring the same revolutionary customer experience, operational excellence and speed of innovation that Kraken is powering across energy retailers to other sectors. \n\n\nAs Head of Engineering for the Water Industry, your main responsibility will be to manage 4~5 sub-teams working on building the water product and implementing Kraken for water utilities. This includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers. Weโre low on process, with a high level of trust given to individuals.\n\n\nMost of our server-side applications are written in Python. The Kraken platform is built using Django and Celery, and makes extensive use of GraphQL and REST APIs.\n\n\nWe use an immutable infrastructure approach to manage our AWS environments. We heavily use EKS, RDS Aurora, AmazonMQ, S3 and EventBridge in our platform architecture. We practise continuous deployment and release new versions of Kraken around 200 times per day.\n\n\nEngineering standards are high. We pair program, thoroughly review and test code before it deploys, and maintain fast, high-value test suites. We have weekly tech talks, a day a month devoted to sharpening our internal tools, upgrading dependencies, paying off technical debt - we call it โspa dayโ - and we can often be found at tech meet-ups and conferences.\n\n\nMany of our coding conventions are open-source and we maintain a tech blog. Kraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented engineers and level-up your skills. \n\n\n\nWhat you'll do:\n* Lead and scale the Kraken Utilities water team, overseeing a talented group of over 25 engineers.\n* Embed a great engineering, problem solving and customer-first culture\n* Provide leadership and mentorship to 5~7 engineering leads to build high-performing teams.\n* Ensure that the engineering team ships consistently high quality, reliable, scalable, secure and performant software.\n* Architect new components of the Kraken platform and drive continuous development to meet evolving client needs.\n* Collaborate with client stakeholders to facilitate smooth migration and adoption of our platform as a service (SaaS).\n* Work closely with the existing Kraken team to help build a consistent platform\n* Collaborate closely with the Telco team to ensure consistency \n* Communicate with a wide range of stakeholders (technical and non technical). \n\n\n\nWhat you'll need:\n* Technical depth and breadth to drive the future development of the platform\n* Structured problem solving skills to decompose and solve ambiguous problems \n* Ability to hack a quick prototype and to properly architect a system design (and the ability/pragmatism to decide when to do what)\n* Inspirational leadership style and entrepreneurial energy\n* Past experience in one of the areas like enterprise software, Large scale transaction processing, AI and machine learning software is desirable\n* Scaling up platforms serving a few geographies and 10X millions to multi geography multi entity 100X millions would be ideal\n* Familiarity with key technology components underpinning Krakenโs stack ie python, django, django-REST-framework, AWS, kubernetes, terraform, react and graphQL, is required\n* Experience managing teams of teams (20+ engineers is desired). \n* Stakeholder management experience. \n\n\n\nWhy you'll love it here:\n* Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!\n* Octopus Energy is a unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We're looking for skills and experience to help shape and define the future of not only our team, but the wider business at a global scale. If you're reading this and grinning, please apply! There are huge challenges to tackle, and we need amazing people who are keen to get stuck in.\n\n\nIf this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you. \n\n\nStudies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers. \n \nTeams are empowered to choose a way of working that works for them, often opting for a Kanban-like approach. Notion and Asana are then used to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Datadog, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production. \n\n\nWeโre now charging Kraken to power utilities beyond energy (think water, broadband,..) and have created a new business Kraken Utilities. We are building an innovation (ML/Data/AI) team from scratch and are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join and help us scale, implement a good culture, and work on some really exciting tech challenges. \n \nYou'll join a small team working on research around how to help prevent water leakage (think domestic water usage trends, leak detection software, smart meter data trends etc). You'll also get the chance to work on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to build things like message generating systems.\n \nSome of our coding conventions are open-source . \n \nKraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented engineers and level-up your skills. \n \nOur technology\n\n\nOur Data/ML stack includes: Python, SQL, pandas, Numpy, AWS, PyTorch, TensorFlow, NLP. \n\n\nOn the server-side, we mainly use Python. Most of our websites are powered by Django, Django-REST-framework and GraphQL (Graphene). \n \nWe use AWS heavily as part of a continuous deployment pipeline. See, for example, Django, ELB health checks and continuous delivery. \n \nClient-side, we use React, htmx and SASS; our mobile apps are built using native code or React Native.\n\n\n\nWhat you'll do\n* Design, build, and deploy cutting-edge machine learning systems to address complex business challenges\n* Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including product managers, software engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver exceptional ML products\n* Stay at the forefront of technology. Explore and evaluate new technologies to inspire the creation of new ML products and enhance existing ones\n* Conduct A/B experiments in collaboration with other teams, analyse results, and iterate to drive continuous improvement\n* Embrace ambiguity. As we scale, your role will evolve, and you should be comfortable adapting to changing responsibilities and focus areas\n\n\n\nWhat you'll need\n* You have a proven track record with 5+ years of hands-on experience applying machine learning to real-world business challenges within an industry setting\n* A solid foundation in the fundamentals of machine learning is a must. You are proficient in exploratory data analysis, model selection, model pipeline development, and the end-to-end process of model deployment and monitoring\n* Demonstrated expertise in Python, SQL, and common ML, DL and visualisation libraries such as pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, tensorflow/pytorch, matplotlib etc.\n* Experienced in cloud technologies, preferably with AWS\n* Strong communication skills are essential. You can articulate complex technical concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders with clarity\n* Proficient in software engineering fundamentals including version control and CI/CD pipelines\n* Nice to have:\n\n\n* Experience building NLP products\n* Experience using dbt\n\n\n\nWhy else you'll love it here\n* Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!\n* Octopus Energy is a unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We want your hard work to be rewarded with perks you actually care about! We won best company to work for in 2022, on Glassdoor we we're voted 50 best places to work in 2022 and our Group CEO, Greg has recorded a podcast about our culture and how we empower our people \n* Visit our perks hub - Octopus Employee Benefits\n\n\n\n\n\nThis team will require candidates to work on a hybrid remote basis, coming into our office in Oxford Circus 1-2 days a week. You do also need to be able to work in the UK. \n\n\nWe're very excited to be growing our team. We're looking for skills and experience to help shape and define the future of not only our team, but the wider business at a global scale. If you're reading this and grinning, please apply! There are huge challenges to tackle, and we need amazing people who are keen to get stuck in.\n\n\n\n\nIf this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you. \n\n\nStudies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements.
