To excel in this role and have a positive impact on our customer success, youโ€™ll have strong experience with AWS infrastructure, serverless architecture, event-driven microservices and a test-driven mindset. Youโ€™ll need an ability to learn quickly, think big, and deliver rock-solid results in a fast-paced startup environment. You are proactive, continuously look for ways to grow yourself, help teammates, and opportunities to make the products you work on stronger. This is a chance to join an innovative team where you will be challenged, and have significant input to shape a product we believe will become a global household name.

What You'll Do

  • Write, improve and maintain serverless functions to accurately transform and load data into efficient and organised MongoDB storage

  • Develop and maintain 3rd party data clients to enrich stored data

  • Be highly organised and collaborate effectively with remote team members.

About You

  • Located within +/- 2hr of UK time (GMT+0)

  • Minimum 2 years full-time work experience as a backend engineer on production services

  • Advanced knowledge of Python, and pythonic code.

  • Experience with MongoDB

  • Intuitively look for ways to keep code modular, tested, and maintainable.

  • Keen to learn, share and step outside of your comfort zone to create ambitious solutions to e-commerce challenges.

  • A high level of energy and enthusiasm about being part of a small, progressive team.

Good To Have

These are good to have, but not essential for the role

  • Production experience with AWS services in a microservices context, such as Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, and EventBridge.

  • Track record of building serverless applications (Serverless Framework or SAM)

  • Track record with TDD approach to engineering.

Our Culture

Our culture is built on respect, collaboration and a drive to shake up the world of shopping. Weโ€™re at the beginning of our journey with opportunity for new team members to lead projects and shape services that customers interact with daily. Our team are conscientious, deep thinkers, always striving to be awesome human beings.

About Us

When your kid has weird health symptoms, what should you do?

Sleuth is a venture-backed startup with a new solution to this problem. We crowdsource data from parents (60,000+ kids in 2022). Then we provide machine learning-informed results about treatments, therapies, parenting techniques, and specialists. We are creating the largest public database of kidsโ€™ health info over the next 24 months.

Everyone who has ever searched for information about their own strange health symptoms knows how bad the Internet is for answering these questions. This is especially serious for kids. We can do better.ย

The Position

Sleuth is looking for a VP of Engineering to join as our first full-time developer and engineering lead. We are excited for you to join us: we want to be a company engineers love, and we know what that looks like.

As our engineering leader, you will likely choose to hire one additional engineer soon with support from consulting engineers and designers available (and budgeted) for specific projects.ย

We have built extensive prototypes, including our current site, but you are responsible to lead the creation of our first full product. You have no code to inherit.

Sleuth will start as a web application, and you should be comfortable to build, test, and iterate in that environment. Because of our focus on data, our VP of Engineering should have strong backend expertise with fullstack flexibility. You should be comfortable with SQL and NoSQL database applications, caching & scalability. You should also be able to interact with modern Javascript libraries and tooling, and you should be thoughtful about UX.ย

In general, we are programming language and front-end framework agnostic. We want to use the best tools for our growing product and team. We expect candidates to employ sound engineering and testing practices. Finally, we are sure you will have strong views about engineering team hiring, process, and management.ย

The Team

Alex Leeds previously led data science and business strategy teams at Squarespace. He has been Director of Data Science for a consumer finance startup (1/0 Capital), he was a Data Scientist in Residence at IDEO, and he co-founded acompany called Ufora that provided tools for machine learning on AWS (in 2008). Alex ran NYC Data Wranglers and the Village Tech Breakfast for many years and enjoys contributing to the NYC tech community. He has a PhD from Wharton Business School where he studied statistics and applied economics.

Sehreen Noor Ali is an award-winning growth strategist working at the intersection of technology, business, and inclusion. A graduate of Brown (B.A) and Harvard (Ed.M), she started her career as a public servant and diplomat, helping execute President Obamaโ€™s initiatives in entrepreneurship, education, and innovation in the Middle East and South Asia. Later, she led business development for Noodle.com and built out the sales functions for three start-up teams at Kaplan. She is a startup advisor, founder of EdTechWomen, on the Advisory Board for SXSWedu, and not least, a mom to two little girls.

Sleuth is backed by Brooklyn Bridge Ventures,ย Graham & Walker,ย Antler and Newlab.

\nMachine Learning Engineer\n\nWe are the company behind WordPress.com, Jetpack, WooCommerce and Tumblr. We are looking for someone to join a team of data scientists and software engineers to build, deploy, and iterate on applications involving time series analysis, machine learning, natural language processing and/or search. \n\nWhat have we worked on recently?\n\nWe help our users to create powerful sites with ease and enable our colleagues to support our users. Our completed and ongoing projects include\n\n\n* Elfbot – a machine learning project to automatically tag chat transcripts from our live chat user support. \n\n* Automated anomaly detection on business and user data.\n\n* A new Jetpack Search experience with instant search and improved relevance.\n\n* A generalized machine learning pipeline to build audiences for marketing and engagement.\n\n\n\n\nHow do we work?\n\n\n* We’re kind to each other and our users – we strive to build a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture of cohesive teams focused on delivering value to our customers.\n\n* We work as a global and distributed workforce resulting in a unique way of working built around our creed. \n\n* We offer flexible work arrangements allowing our team members to work when they feel best.\n\n* We welcome collaboration, and you can be involved in any discussion across our many communication channels.\n\n\n\n\nEnough about us, let‘s talk more about you. The Machine Learning Engineer position might be a good fit if you:\n\n\n* Have hands-on experience in building and deploying data-intensive applications to production. You care about building reliable and testable infrastructure and pipelines. Familiarity with the Hadoop ecosystem and cloud computing services like AWS and GCP will be advantageous.\n\n* Are motivated to propose technical solutions, own software architecture, evaluate technologies and infrastructure, or develop technical roadmaps for future applications. \n\n* Have a demonstrated interest in understanding machine learning techniques and workflows like data preprocessing, feature extraction, and training and evaluation of classification and regression models.\n\n* Bring programming skills in multiple programming languages and paradigms.
